    Pork and Green Onion Pies
    Edward S.

What kind of pies does Beijing Pie House serve? You won't find cherry pies or chicken pot pies here. Their meat pies (xian bing) are large hockey-puck shaped "dumplings" filled with lamb, pork, or beef. Pork and Green Onion Pies: The four pies are fried, which makes the wrapper pleasantly crispy, chewy, and delicate all at once. Be careful on your first bite because these things are really juicy. There's so much tasty broth that you could fill three spoons. The filling is a blend of minced pork and scallions. Each one is pretty hefty, and your chopstick grip strength is definitely tested. Make a dipping sauce with the vinegar and delicious chili crisp oil. Ordering: Go straight to the counter and place your order. It'll take about 15 minutes as everything is made to order. For orders under $30, it is cash only. Dining Area: They have about a dozen tables inside. Parking: There's a little parking lot.

Seeing that there are a few decent RECENT reviews of this place, we decided to give this place another try. I am glad we did. Is it as good as the former Beijing Pie House? NOPE. Is it much much better than the early days of new management? You bet!! Lamb and onion pie: this has now become my new #1. Very juicy super hot squirters, so watch out! Shrimp and pork dumplings - panfried: my old favorites. But they are not quite as flavorful as how they used to be. The size of the filling, the crunch of the outside crust, and the juiciness factors are on par with the previous version though so I still enjoy them a lot. Beef and green onion pancake: love the crust but it needs more favor. Pretty good though. Shrimp and pork dumplings - boiled: just like the panfried version, they're juicy with a sizable filling. However, maybe the boiling process further dilutes the flavor, these are even less flavorful than the panfried ones. I had to make a dipping sauce for them . Overall the shrimp and pork dumplings are only at about 80% tastiness level compared to the Beijing Pie House days. As a side note, I'd tried mama lu's and Luscious Dumplings. Neither was as good as the old BPH. Jin hai at its current level is better than both in terms of pies and dumplings and is my choice over those two.  Staff were friendly but ...inexperienced. Didn't ask what we'd like to drink (upside is that they didn't try to upsell anything either). Sat around for 10m before I realized neither of us even got a glass of water. Had to ask for water and they came without ice. On the flip side, they did give us free pastry. Like I said, friendly people but a little lacking in restaurant business acumen - gotta sell at least some soft drinks to increase the profit margin! :)

I haven't been here in a while but the food still tastes great. I called in an order for 3 items. *Pork and green onion pie Omg that was so delicious with the juicy filling and nice chewy dough. *Beef and green onion pancake I absolutely love the layers of meat and pancake. It's very tasty and reminds me of a lasagna without sauce lol *Shrimp, pork and leek pan-fried dumplings I wished the filling had more leek but overall it was delicious and juicy This place is worth trying out for these items. I've never been dissapointed at all with their food.

Who would have thunk there are pies in Chinese cuisine, but they do, from the Beijing area. The northern influence from Mongolia and Xinjiang created this type cuisine. Very different from the Cantonese cuisine which is most prevalent in this country. Certainly very ethnic, and if you are not adventurous this is not for you. English is not spoken here, so be ready for some communication difficulties if you don't speak Mandarin. The food here is delicious, so be adventurous and try it out.

The server didn't speak much English but we managed to order. We can hear several years ago when this was known as the Beijing Pie House or something like that. The menu is basically the same. The pie is pan fried and has a soup broth inside. It could have been fried a little longer in my opinion. I would like another item next time. We brought 2 pies home and they tasted okay but I recommend eating them there while they are fresh. The decor is nothing special. They charge extra for credit card so bring cash.

Pretty decent food for the price, depending on what you get. I got the xiao long bao ($10.99), scallion pancake ($6.99), and beef and green onion pie ($12.49). The beef and green onion pie came in 4s, and were about 3 inches in diameter. They were a savory with slight umami, but it was a very dull savoriness, partly due to the monotonous iron-like beef flavor without enough scallion or ginger. Its flavor fell flat. It was juicy and lightly crispy with a browned taste on the outside. The green onion pancake was soft on the inside and lightly crispy on the outside. Strong complex bright umami notes from the onions. I prefer the crispier ones, but for a softer one, this was decent, but a bit floury. Portions were not bad: it came with 6 pieces that were 4 inches at their widest part of each pancake slice. Still probably not worth the price in my opinion for the lack of meat. The xiao long bao was good for $11. Its savoriness was balanced, unlike the beef and green onion pie. The blend of meaty porkiness and complex scallion savoriness was pleasantly contrasted by a bright light gingery sweetness. The skin was a bit thick on some pieces, but at least it was more durable than other versions. Some pieces also had less juice than others. SERVICE: The waiters were friendly, spoke a little English, and served the food quickly. Sometimes, they were not always present in the main room for a brief duration. They messed up the order on the receipt, overcharging me by charging me for "Vagie chao main ($10.99)" instead of scallion pancake ($6.99), but they also undercharged by forgetting the drinks, so I paid for what I should have basically. AMBIANCE: there are a few tables, but there is no actual dishware, only styrofoam boxes with foil manually placed inside and styrofoam plates. There were not too many decorations. Additionally, the ingredients and other supplies were stored along the wall behind the counter in the main room. The menus had English as well, and lighting was alright.

Authentic Chinese spot with piping hot meat pies. Came here with a couple of friends for dinner on a Thursday evening around 7pm, and were seated immediately. They seem to speak Mandarin only, but they were still friendly. The menu is in English. Free parking is available in the lot. Credit cards are accepted. Indoor dining only (no outdoor dining available). We got an order of lamb pies (4), pork and shrimp wonton soup, and beef roll. The lamb pies were very tasty and had a lot of juice (like a xiao long bao). The beef roll was a bit cold, but there was a good amount of meat and was very filling. The wonton soup also had a generous amount of wontons and were could be split among 2-3 people. The owner/waiter was really nice and brought us hot tea.

*** I saw Visa/Mastercard/American Express/Discovery stickers on the door, but best to bring cash just in case *** This restaurant used to be called Beijing Pie House, but the old name is in the history book and it is now called Jin Hai Pie House. One of my friends visited this place and told me their meat pies tasted exactly the same as meat pies from Jin Hai Pie House. In fact the menu looked exactly the same as the menu from Beijing Pie House except the name change. Few months ago I had an opportunity to stop by and ordered a takeout. The parking lot for the plaza is pretty small, so it may not be a bad idea to park at neighboring plaza and walk to this plaza instead. [Service]: One of the old guy didn't wear mask, but the cashier did wear one. Cashier preferred to speak Mandarin and I was told to wait outside for my takeout. After 30 minutes, I began to lose patient and walked back into the restaurant only to learn that my order was ready long ago. Does the staff just don't bother with anyone waiting outside? *** #11 Pork & Onion Meat Pie (4 piece for $10.99): This order was the only saving grace because these pies tasted just as good as before. Juicy on the inside and pies were full of flavors. *** 5-star on food, but minus 1-star on terrible takeout service and minus another star on that one guy who didn't wear a mask.

Truly one of a kind dumpling house with authentic pan-fried meat pies from Northern China. Excellent potstickers also - we ordered 3-ingredients potsticker and shrimp potsticker, both very good! The beef and onion meat pies are very tasty with about a spoonful of soup inside, so be very careful biting into it. Wonton soup is light and delicious, complementing the dumplings and mea pies perfectly.

When we made our take out phone order, we thought Beijing Pie House was back in business. We ordered house special pie, and lamb and green onion pie. We also got a free corn meal congee since we made 2 pie orders.. We were so excited because we haven't had a Chinese meat pie since 2019. When we got to the restaurant, we noticed the restaurant name was Jin Hai Pie House Homemade Kitchen, not Beijing Pie House. Oh no... They had one curbside seating and no inside dining. The cashier spoke English and very pleasant to work with. No issues with the service starting from the phone order. We picked up a to go menu and on the second page of the menu, we noticed they still used Beijing Pie House's IG account. Maybe they just took over after we went last. Since it was two different restaurant names, we will try our best not to compare them. Let's start with the pies. The fillings were small and 2 out of the 8 pies we got had a hole on it. Sure enough, no juice inside and dried out. The pie casing wasn't chewy enough for our liking. Even though the same menu was used, it was definitely not the same chef since we didn't jump for joy after our first bites. The corn meal congee was a joke. There was no corn in it but corn flavored water. Overall experience was a fail. We were full but far from enjoying our food. At this point, we wouldn't go back.

Came here for dinner last night with a couple friends and the second I saw the food on other peoples table I knew I was in for a treat. Ordered the lamb and green onion meat pie as well as a lamb, and I think a shrimp pan fried dumpling and it did not disappoint. Everything had a juicy filling, the dough was soft. Dip it with the chili oil, soy sauce, vinegar combination and wow it was so good. Service was standard and food came out in a timely manner Only giving it a four star because it definitely could be cleaner but honestly it's definitely worth coming back I don't think you'll regret it!

We came here on Sunday at around 2pm and still waited around 30-40min for a table All that time waiting in line meant I had plenty of time to read through reviews and strategize my order, hah! By the way, when you arrive, make sure you go inside the restaurant and get a number and hang out until they call your number. It's pretty low tech lolll. Popcorn chicken - this seems to be a crowd favorite. It was good popcorn chicken but definitely not as good as other places in the area. That said, I do agree that it's good value as the portion is really big. Beef roll - ordered it without cilantro since cilantro is not my friend (sorry cilantro lovers). It ended up tasting a little plain and needed some of the chilli crisp/ oil to give it a little oomph. That said, the crust/ roll was good and the beef was flavorful (not too dry). Not bad, but also not amazing. Pork and veggie dumping in chilli oil - this was also just okay. The dumpling itself was lacking flavor but I guess the sauce helps. Braised beef and tendon noodles - If there's one thing I'd order again, it would be this. I LOVE the texture of the noodle. It has the perfect springy bite. Love love love the noodle. The beef was tender and the soup was okay (Good, not great). But the noodles though, if I could just buy the noodles, I would. If I were to sum up the food, I'd say it's not bad, but not amazing. The value is great since portions are generous, but taste wise is pretty average. Was it worth the wait? Absolutely not. I would not wait more than 10min for a table here to be honest. Would I come back here again if it was less than 10min wait? Yea probably if I was in the area.

Everything came out piping hot and packaged well for takeout. We only waited about 15min, which was not bad at all. We really liked the siu mai and chow fun. Both were savory and addicting. Siu mai were especially juicy and meaty; they definitely satisfied our dim sum cravings. Soup dumplings were ok - I found the wrapper to be doughy and the filling kinda plain. The black sesame roll had an interesting rolled look and a sticky, chewy, jelly-like texture. They opened and closed the door for us which was a nice touch because it was busy inside. We ordered the pork ramen, pork buns, and pork soup dumplings. On to the food! Pork Ramen: 3/5 They give you a hefty amount of noodles and pork. They use a thin noodle here which pairs well with the broth. I truly do believe this was around average for ramen as the flavor in the broth was not as strong or savory. The highlight of the entire entree was definitely the pork, which was tender and flavorful. I probably would not order this again. Pork bun: 5/5 The pork buns were soft and fluffy, almost too good looking to eat. There was the right amount of soup and meat inside that made for a wonderful bite full of flavor. Not dry at all. Would recommend ordering this if you visit. Pork Dumplings: 5/5 The star of the show, the dumplings. They were soft and just like the buns, they had the right amount of soup + meat which made for a delicious bite every time. My toddler even ate some and she's usually super picky about meat. Overall, I'd definitely recommend coming here for the other noodles, the dumplings, and buns. You can skip on the ramen. I would 100% come back here to dine in. Quick note that parking gets full pretty quick here.

My mom noticed another table ordering the sweet and sour pork and immediately wanted to try it. It ended up being really good! I also ordered the Portuguese-style beef curry, which was flavorful, although I personally preferred the one at Macau HK Cafe. We also tried the pork chop baked spaghetti with red sauce and the pan-fried chicken steak. Everything was pretty satisfying and gave us a nice variety of Hong Kong-style comfort food. The ambiance was fun, with the restaurant designed to resemble the streets of Hong Kong. Service was a little lacking during our visit, but the food made up for it. Overall, I'd definitely come back to try more dishes!

Loved my whole meal from start to finish at Hong Kong Cafe!…read more The cafe is located at the north end of the Atlantic Times Square plaza in Monterey Park. There's a large underground garage for parking. We got lucky with a spot as a car was just leaving when we pulled in, so I'm not sure how hard it is to find parking during peak times, but there were a lot of cars coming in so I imagine it could be a bit difficult on weekends. We came to the cafe Saturday morning around 11:30 and managed to beat the lunch rush. They had tables available when we arrived, so my party of 4 was seated in a couple minutes once they prepared the table. It was quite spacious inside with plenty of space between each table, which made it easier for us with a bulky stroller. The decor was really fun to look at as well, as they have a lot of Hong Kong themed decoration. My friend got the Hong Kong milk tea to drink but it was pretty bad. He said the tea flavor was way too strong. I tried a sip and agree it wasn't very good. As expected of a Hong Kong cafe, the menu was large and had a huge selection of dishes. It took us a while to look through everything and figure out what we wanted. We ended up sharing the following dishes: #95 signature fish fillet ($19.95) - didn't know what to expect as there was no description of the dish on the menu. It was fried and coated in a sweet salty sauce. It was good but tasted pretty standard #120 Hainan chicken rice ($18.95) - probably my least favorite dish of the meal. It was served completely chilled, and the rice didn't have the fragrant chicken flavor I was expecting #151 seafood chow fun ($15.95) - this was my favorite dish! we got it with gravy for a change (we usually always get this dry) and it really came smothered in sauce. Despite that, we could still taste the wok hei in the rice noodle #176 grilled pork chop ($15.95) - pork chop was delicious! but the mushroom sauce we got on the side was very meh; it didn't have much flavor #176 grilled chicken steak ($15.95) - mostly one friend was eating this dish, but I tried a piece of the chicken and it was solid. They do a good job grilling their meats here! Portions are ginormous here. You can definitely get away with ordering 3-4 dishes for 4 people, but we wanted to have some leftovers for the next day so we ordered 5. We left happy and full :)
