Cute place for coffee and dessert right after a light lunch date! I'm from the DC area and this instantly reminded me of the west coast version of Dean and Deluca. Overwhelmed with the mass quantity of dessert choices, but my friend and I went for the Hazelnut peach meringue cake. The only dessert that had only one slice sold... BUT DON'T KNOW WHY?! Been coming here for about 10 years. Food is still good but there are just too many flies inside (most likely because the back door is used as an entrance/exit). It's normal to see a fly or two in a but that's not the case here. Makes the indoor dining experience gross and annoying having to swap them away from the food as we eat. FOODIE PARADISE near WeHo and the Bev Cen! A top-notch deli-emporium with ready-to-eat or to-go salads and sandwiches, plus the most amazing dessert selection around... I dropped by recently to pick up a hostess gift for a friend I met while living in Spain. Wanted something to evoke our time there, and Joan's didn't disappoint, with options ranging from Basque cheeses, membrillo, cured meats... I settled on Tortas de Aceite (Andalusian wafers covered in sugar), which we later gobbled up with some helado (ice cream.) Joan's is one of the few places I even consider for dessert. My favorites are: affogato (a scoop of chocolate gelato in a cup of espresso,) pear torte and molasses snap cookies. For anyone who wants to sample as much of the menu as possible, their Tri-Salad special is perfect; you get to choose any of three salads from the deli case. Sandwiches are great too. If you're heading to the Hollywood Bowl or Greek Theater for a concert, this is the perfect place to pick up your picnic! The only downsides are parking (always a pain in this area,) and long lines at lunch. The staff (jaunty in their little caps) are pretty efficient. I don't know why LA with our great weather doesn't have more al fresco dining; Joan's is an all-too-rare exception with tables out front watched over by a couple of fiberglass cows. (Please be considerate of other al fresco patrons by following the policy of not saving tables.) The inside tables are rather cramped, so outside is usually preferable. read more

My BF and I decided to try something new today for lunch. We arrived around 12:30 am before the crazy lunch crowd and got great seats in the shade on the patio. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. After sitting there 25 minutes, I finally waved to a busboy to find my order. He comes back in two minutes with both of our plates and apologized. It was obvious it was forgotten. I couldn't pick up my sandwich because it would fall apart. It had been sitting so long in the back the bread became soggy. Soaked up sponge. I found a way to get all of it in my mouth by just hacking it with a fork. It was delicious! I will say it again. It was delicious. The pork was cooked perfectly. We paid. All was alright. I get home and immediately run for the restroom. It didn't sit with me at all. My second lunch is a few Imodium tablets. I wish I had a better experience with this place. I asked for gelato, it was too hard to spoon. The service was more than lacking. So overpriced for what you get. I was not asked if I wanted dine in or take out. They gave me to-go when I wanted to eat outside. It took more than 5 min for someone to realize this. Overall severely unimpressed. I love the experience Joan's offers...the space is beautiful. The staff is always friendly. The menu offers the types of food I like but very few items are organic! I think I saw organic cranberries. I've been going to Joan's since it was just have the size it is now before organic, gmo and gluten were in my vocabulary. I've evolved but Joan's hasn't. A gourmet place such as Joan's should have organic food. It should have gluten free bread options. Their current prices reflect the prices I see on organic offerings at other places. Joan's is the kind of market/bakery/restaurant that we all want to live in walking distance to. I recently stopped here with the aunt to grab to go dinner to have at my cousin's. I ordered a chicken, bacon, brie and onion sandwich. Was it delicious? Yes. Did I want it to be bigger? Yes. Can't fault Joan's though because each bite was perfect. The rest of the my party got the Chinese Chicken Salad, which I had a bit of. I don't know why it was necessarily Chinese (I suppose the wontons and rice sticks). It was tasty, but I would have gone for a thicker dressing (that's more of my general preference). I also sampled a pretzel croissant (my favorite of all croissants) and it was wonderful warm (a sweet attendant toasted it for me). There were many other treats I longed to try, but did not have the time for. I also dig the whole white tile interior. It reminds me of grandma's kitchen. I've been a fan of Joan's for years now. Their Chinese Chicken Salad is the best in WEHO and the atmosphere is perfect for a lazy lunch. BUT I was recently disappointed to find that their portions have downsized drastically. I usually get the salad to go and I was so frustrated to find that there was barely any lettuce. There was an average amount of chicken and a large amount of their white crisps (obviously to compensate for the lack of lettuce). Please Joan's skimp on the salad, it's already a pricy salad as is. Ive only been once so I havent tried too many things and I wouldnt say that everything there is 5 stars, BUT I can tell you that, if youre up for some calories, the short rib sandwich is a 5 star sandwich. I think this sandwich gets put up in the same category with Bay Cities and Langers (two of the best sandwiches in the world). So although its somewhat greasy and its not gonna help you live longer, its important to eat something like this every once in a while just to remind yourself how good food can taste. The carrots were also very good here. The brussel sprout salad was only okay but I am optimistic about this place. I think there are other good things to have. I have heard that the pulled pork sandwich is also very good. So since everyone has already talked about how amazing and fabulous this place is, which it is, my review will be more specific and about one single and beautiful cupcake called The Cloud. I'm gonna start by saying that I am very biased towards Joan's on Third for several reasons: (1) I've been going there since I was around 11 years old which is when it opened, (2) I'm Italian and this place is Italian, (3) the cupcake I tried had marshmallow fluff in it, and I'm obsessed with marshmallows. All that being said, YOU HAVE TO VISIT JOAN'S ON THIRD, even if you don't want a cupcake and you just want a delicious meal, or if you really like cheese or any imported Italian food...the list goes on. Anyway, I chose to eat the dark chocolate cupcake with a tower of marshmallow fluff covered in a chocolate shell. Everything about The Cloud is amazing except that it's quite awkward to eat, at least until you finish eating the tower then it's all good. The bread part of the cupcake is a little dry, I don't mind, but I know people do, so keep that in mind. In conclusion, it blew my mind and if I could force everyone to try the cloud, I would. I've been to this place several times. Most often I get my food to go. The staff is a little aloof. Kind of like this is a cool place and we are to cool work here. Today I had an experience like that. I called in my order, the girl on the phone was aloof, the kind that makes you want to say "oh I'm sorry," before you ask another question . Heading to Joan's on third there was a street fair of some kind. The entire street was blocked off. I was heading west, I couldn't get to Jones. I called to cancel my order. "The streets blocked off', " I said, " I can't get down there." she said "oh." "Do you know there's a fair on third? " She said, "no." Incredulous, l said," You don't know there's a massive street fair on third?" "No," she said. Here's what should've happened. When I called she should've said, " by the way there's a street fair it might be difficult getting here." When I couldn't get there to pick up the sandwich she should've said, " oh I'm sorry."
