Joan's is a sure thing. It's quick and easy and always satisfying. This place has become an LA landmark in its own right as it appeals to all types of peeps. There's something for the health conscious and foodie alike. The dishes are intricately prepared to seduce every palate. Farro salad with feta and squash is healthy and filling and the tuna salad isn't too mayo'd out. The Brussels sprouts salad couldn't get any better and doesn't taste like its been drenched in oil like most places. I love to do the tri salad option which allows me to choose three salads from the sides bar and top them over field greens with vinaigrette so I can get a variety of sides at once. They also have an iced green tea that is never too watered down and although it isn't sweetened it sure tastes like it! The whole place is covered from floor to ceiling with shelves of imported products and they have a frozen section so you can always be prepared to have a last minute friend over. The sweets and treats here are also incredible and my favorite ever are the Mexican Wedding cookies (almond cookies with powdered sugar) but you need to order them in advance which is so worth it. I continue to have the most inexplicably bad experiences with picking up my Uber Eats take out orders. Today, I ordered a Chinese chicken salad and cookie. I walk in and head to the left. The guy is helping out some other frustrated lady picking up because they forgot her drink. He tells me to wait and goes away. At this point, an Uber Eats driver parks outside, walks in, and simply picks up a bag off the table without speaking to any staff or anyone. In and out - good for him. Meanwhile, my app says my food has been ready for about 10 minutes but its not on their table. So I ask a staff and he acknowledges, then disappears in the back for 5 minutes. Im walking around the restaurant, making sure my illegally parked car doesn't get towed, and now late for work at the hospital. So I see the pre-made Chinese chicken salads and I just pick it up. And then I tell the cashier I also bought a cookie and she gives me a cookie. I leave. So the moral of the story is don't order takeout from Joan's. Either order delivery so someone else can deal with their disorganized shit, or go into the restaurant and order at the counter. read more

This is one of those little bit of everything places. A food lovers heaven. The layout is a little confusing for a first time visitor but anyone behind the counter is very nice and willing to guide you. There are 2 cashiers where you order and they give you a number and bring you your food. There is limited indoor seating and a fair amount of outdoor seating. There is a sandwich section ( their short rib melt was featured in Bon Appetit ) many deli case sides ( we had the roasted vegetables and a couscous salad) a salad section (we didn't order one but I saw at least 8 people eating the Chinese Chicken) a cold cut and cheese section ( we got salami, prosciutto and an assortment of cheeses cut to order and a delicious potato/onion focaccia they warm and slice. My intention was to head to the coffee / latte and dessert section after our meal but I was too stuffed! I'm already plotting what to get next time. Maybe if I get that Chinese chicken salad I will have room for the pastries after :) read more

Although we often hang out in the area, we didn't find out about this place until we saw it on some TV show. The closest thing I can compare it to is Dean & Deluca in Lower Manhattan. We primarily had gone there for their cupcakes (which were good, but not the best we ever had). They have a very wide assortment of European groceries, and their other pastries (which are mostly French) were outstanding. We had their French Toast, which was done to perfection, and I had a couple of soft boiled eggs, toast and bacon, which were equally good (albeit a bit pricey). Their selection of cheeses were equally as good. To be fair, most of the items they carry, one could also get at the Cheesestore in Beverly Hills or even at Bristol Farms, which is where we usually go for such things, but as decoration, they added a nice touch. One can also buy an array of prepared dishes and soups. All in all, it was a lovely way to spend a Monday morning and forget about all the horrible news out there. read more

Yay I finally tried Joan's! I've been wanting to try the food here for months but just hadn't gotten around to it. We had a work meeting so my co-worker suggested Joan's since she loves the food there. After perusing Yelp I saw that the short rib sandwich seemed to be one of the front runners so that's what I got. Honestly, I don't like onions, every once in a great while I like sauteed onions. I usually order my sandwich sans onions but I wanted to try the sandwich as prepared, so I left them in. After one bite I took them out- but at least I tried first! Aside from the onions the sandwich was really good. The meat was tender and nicely seasoned, the cheese and bread were what really got me though. Golden and buttery and just crisp enough. It was super duper greasy which was the other thing I didn't really like. But still good and I would probably order it again. Next time I want to try one of their grilled cheese versions. And I still need to have a cupcake from there! read more

Time and time again, I've witnessed the lackadaisical attitude of the waiters towards clearing tables after guests have left. It's like pulling teeth just to get them to acknowledge the mess and reluctantly do their job as if it were some kind of favor. What's going on in their kitchen? ‍ I can't help but wonder if cleanliness is a foreign concept to them, or if it's just a select few who are dragging down the reputation of the entire establishment. I've been going to Joan's on Third for 22 years. I have remained loyal even as she raised her prices to astronomical prices. I could rationalize paying these prices as long as the quality of food remained good. I even put up with the less-than-friendly people taking orders at the counter. But today, I reached my limit! Loving her turkey meatloaf sandwich, I was willing to pay $18. The menu shows it serves 2-4 people. Really? It's 1-1/2 slices of turkey with lettuce and tomato. 2-4 lilliputians, perhaps. But the motivating reason for this review? The BREAD WAS STALE!! An $18 sandwich on stale bread? Not acceptable. When I was directed to "someone to speak with" I was met with a deer in the headlight stare; clueless as to what to do when a customer complains and therefore, she did NOTHING. So, Joan, my loyalty and dollar only goes so far and it will be going far from you to another restaurant more worthy. read more

I'm glad I did manage to have the time to actually go to this restaurant because the food there really was excellent. Los Angeles is really good for having tons of restaurants that serve excellent food and this restaurant is not an exception. It was nice to see that they had plenty of options, I did end up choosing the Short Rib Sandwich and it was freaking gorgeous it was absolutely delicious and if I do get the opportunity to go this restaurant again I will definitely be getting the same sandwich, I know I should probably try something new but it was really good and I don't think I've ever a sandwich quite like it. I think the only complaint that I can think of is the fact that there was a slight shortage in seating but that can't always be helped when they are large amounts of people wanting to go there. read more

Wish this was the old Joan's on Third. I miss it when is was just one little store. This place is too big and you get lost, or shall I say, get ignored. So many workers and not one would give us the time of day. I do miss the "Hello" at the door you used to get years ago at the old place. Now to the food. The short Rib Sand used to be good. I guess as you get to big your quality suffers. We tried all of the "must haves" as we were a large group. The consensus of our party was the same, "Meh" and a big "Meh" at that. It's a shame to see a place like this loose it's charm and quality. All good things must come to an end I guess. Our group decided that we would not repeat our experience and choose a different spot next time. I will hang on to the good old days and the memories of what Joan's used to be. :( read more

Not impressed AT ALL. This place is soooo hyped up, i don't get why everyone keeps raving about it. Overpriced stale, tasteless food. Had the Short rib sandwich. It was lacking meat for the price and the Short rib meat was bland. The staff was rude and rushing. Didn't seem like a the friendly, family owned place that I have heard from friends. Waited almost 30 min for food delivered on cheap picnic paper plates. After eating we wanted coffee. Had to get in another line and waited an additional 15min. for a coffee that tasted like water. No flavor, No love. For the same amount of money I could get a great pour over from Handsome or Intelligentsia!! Huge disappointment. Will not be going back and cannot recommend to anyone. Joan's has a huge outdoor patio area which is really nice and a big marketplace inside which has a lot of interesting food (which looks pretty good actually). The ordering/seating system is a little awkward though. you order at the register, like at a fast food place, and get a number. then you find your own seat (which you may end up waiting quite a while for) and they bring you your food. I went for brunch and got the New York breakfast sandwich, a side of fruit, and the orange juice. The fruit was good but not much of it for $4. The orange juice was great. The sandwich was basically a grilled cheese sandwich with a patty of scrambled egg and bacon bits on it. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't very good either - I'd skip it. read more

This is the gourmet eater heaven for the rest of us who don't have the private chefs and deep deep pockets. the food is superb. If you are taking it to go, some heating and minimal preparation might be necessary like pouring the sauce or presentation on your plate. if you are eating there - the seating is not the best since it's scarce and hard to find and seats are tight, but it gives you that european or New York feel. their salads and sandwiches are exceptionally tasty, the deserts are awsome. You can find all the gourmet items you see in europe and exceptional fine quality restaurants or you have heard the name from people who travel. if you are have a eye for the celebrity crowd you will always run into some one there. read more

An incredible marketplace vibe buzzing with people and bustling staff - not unlike Eataly in NYC Flatiron. Didn't expect anything like it coming to LA. They've got great selection (cheeses, sandwiches, salads, soup, etc) and you can seat yourself after ordering. The food is terrific albeit expensive - par for the course in the area so I would not fault them given the ambience. We got the short rib, turkey club, and southwest salad - all were fresh and what you expect for high-end gourmet lunch/brunch fare. The hustle bustle and density of people can be a bit overwhelming but the staff move things along and it all seems to work. You know there's a strong reason why you would mostly catch a sight of a long line reaching out the front door of this restaurant. Well seriously, it's one of the best restaurants that I have ever been to. So very professional while serving you and so very warm at the same time! Have been visiting this place for over 6 months now and trust me, each time I hang my hat here - the experience just gets better. If you have lucky stars enough in your bucket to find a meter, just jump on it. This place stays busy but has a got a string of happy reasons for true foodies. Food is great, But they cheat on credit cards always check your credit card with your receipt. They charged my credit card double. The receipt that I signed was $44.26 but they charged me $88.26 and it was do shocking fir me that it was normal for them and they were so rude to me not even say sorry!!!!! when I called them about their mistake they didn't even ask me who was the person who served you no question and said we ll return it to your card but nothing happened yet after a week, lets see hopefully they return it by the end of this week that's what they said. Thats a shame for this kinds successful restaurant with that Volume of customers. If I go there again I ll pay them cash no more card. read more

This is first time writing a review on yelp.. I have to say I love the food here especially the chicken sandwich and the organic hot coffee. I got a recommendation from my friends who live close by on 3rd street district. I went there on Saturday lunch with a couple friends ..It was so busy and packed. I understand its weekend , most of the fine diners are pretty full. The staff was very nice and friendly but the only one thing was THE FOOD came out 30 minutes later after ordering, I had no idea what going on in the kitchen.. I was really starving ...
