Went to Joe's in the North End Saturday nite prior to Labor Day fireworks. The company I was with was great. Food is filling but nothing special. Server forgot to bring out bread and butter until we had started our entrees. Then never brought out one of our beverages because he said its so noisy he doesn't always hear the orders. Hmmm, probably not a good thing. Anyway with so many good places to eat in Boston I don't think I'll return. Mac n cheese was good. Meatloaf dinner was so so. Looking for a decent non-seafood place in downtown Boston is a challenge. Joes seemed to fit the bill. But although the food was acceptable (not really worth the money but just ok), the restaurant was offensive. Server was being funny and nice. But at 8pm - no one knows what the special is, or how much it is, not even the manager. Food was delivered in a reasonable amount of time. It was simply ok. A few things happened though that were just plain offensive. Ordered a drink from the bar and we were not concerned with cost. Let's just say, pathetic. So when attempting to order a drink with a double shot (as in we would pay for a decent drink), we were informed 10 minutes later that this was not allowed due to the "family friendly" atmosphere. Really? Is that why my husband had to all but not stare at the skank sitting across from us that was wearing a paper thin dress and couldn't cross her legs (no underwear included)??? All of this might have been ok, except when we get the bill. Had 2 drinks but charged for 3....can't get a double shot drink but can be charged twice for asking? And - were charged for the wrong sandwich - at $2.00 more than the one we did order! Bill was adjusted by $13.00 and we still aren't sure we weren't ripped off! Watch out for this "family friendly" restaurant that will try to over charge your bill. The only reason why it even gets 2 stars is because the food was ok. Quite possibly one of the worst examples of management I've seen. Two girlfriends and I went in to joes for a nice girls night out. As we are eating the bread I happen to notice that there's mold on it. Being in the hospitality/restaurant industry we all knew this sort of thing happened. We told our waiter and he replied, "that's the second time this week!" We kinda laughed it off and he brought us more bread. After a couple hours of wining and dining we get the bill. Which was well over $200. My friend noticed that the moldy bread incident wasn't reflected on the bill. Which we weren't mad about - we just didn't understand. We told our waiter who then got a manager. She was HORRIBLE. She approached us like we were bothering her and said "your server said you wanted to talk to me" uhhhhhh. So professional. Once my friend explained what happened she basically told us that they don't normally compensate for things like this - so you're saying you don't care if your customers eat your moldy food? Awesome. And this happens often? Cool. - she then goes "well I can take off a soup or something if you want..." WHAT?! Keep your four dollars. It was the most uncomfortable, unprofessional conversations I've had. As we left the restaurant we see the manager and another woman sitting at a table conversing. Sorry, but you don't sit and relax out on the restaurant floor with your customers. You should be in the back checking for more moldy bread. In summary, the food is mediocre and the management is horrible. This place is in such a great location and just takes advantage of that. There's no real quality about this restaurant and I wouldn't suggest going here. However our waiter was the shining star out of our experience. Good guy. read more

We've ordered takeout from Joe's for over 10 years. Always the same thing - cheeseburger and fries. Until this last time, it's always been incredibly consistent awesome food for slightly above average prices, but well worth it. This last time, however, the food quality was much lower and the prices are about double their old prices. I don't know if they changed owners recently, or what but this last meal we received was not good. The burgers that we've gotten 30+ times in the past were always big, fat, fresh, cooked perfectly and tasty. The burgers that we got this time seemed frozen, pre-pattied and tasteless. The cheese on the burgers that we've gotten 30+ times in the past was always fresh, melty and delicious. The cheese we got this time was literally like a thin sheet of hard plastic. It was obviously fake processed cheese slice product that they let sit on the burger, under heat, for too long. The fries that we got 30+ times in the past were always fresh-cut deep-fried potatoes, salted to perfection. Delicious. They were the bomb. So fresh, cut right from a potato. And there was a ton of them. The fries that we got this time were like frozen processed fake starchy reconstituted potato "fries" and tasteless - worse than any fast food joint by FAAAR. The buns we've gotten 30+ times in the past were always fresh, tasty, perfect hamburger buns like you can't find in any store. The buns we got this time were like cheap Shop and Stop buns. The bread and butter that we've gotten 30+ times in the past was always warm, fresh, tasty, melt in your mouth bread with a big container of soft, sweet whipped butter. The bread and butter that we got this time was average bread with a very small portion of hard, tasteless butter. Little details matter a lot. I used to be OK with spending $9 a burger meal here because it was awesome. But $15 a burger for a lower quality burger meal, not so much. Don't plan to go back again. read more

On a recent trip to Boston, my boyfriend and I decided to stop for lunch at Joe's since it was right next to our hotel. Once seated, I notified our server that I was allergic to gluten and asked which items on their menu would be safe for me to eat. I nearly fell out of my chair after hearing her answer.......most items on the menu could be easily modified to be gluten-free. If I wanted a hamburger, no problem because they offered a gluten-free bun. If pizza or pasta was what I was craving.....they offered gluten-free versions of those dishes, too. Even the bread they bring out to the table could be made gluten-free. This was music to my ears! I decided to go with a burger (with the gluten-free bun) and side of mashed potatoes. After our server placed the order, we were then greeted by the on-duty manager who came out to assure me that my food would be prepared safely. Now this is something that most restaurants will rarely ever do, so I greatly appreciated the reassurance. She also mentioned that their gluten-free pizzas were actually really good and that I should try one sometime. Unfortunately, I live in Dallas and we don't have Joe's here, so the pizza would have to wait until my next visit to Boston.....or so I thought. At the end of our meal the Manager brought out a complimentary pizza for me to take with me so that I could try it. Such an unbelievably kind gesture on her part and it really sealed the deal for me that Joe's is awesome. And she was right....the pizza was really, really good (especially the sauce). The next time I'm back in Beantown, I will definitely be stopping by Joe's again. read more

We went there on Saturday for brunch with some friends and their two kids. The service was slow. I think they were having a staff meeting in the kitchen during the middle of morning rush which I don't know why you would do if you had patrons waiting. The food game out hot but wasn't remarkable. We ordered a round of mimosas which the waitress proceeded to spill on my friends' 4 year old child. Although she apologized, she didn't seem to really care. The floor remained soaked with spilled drinks for a while. No manager came over and nothing was removed from the bill. As a local, I can say that the service at Joe's is below average on a consistent basis and the food is just average. Joe's is a chain with a couple locations in the Boston area. Me and my friend did a 5k and we ended up walking around the Faneuil Hall/Waterfront area. We contemplated going to Tia's but the menu was not big enough for us. We ended up walking right across over to Joe's for brunch. The food was good and the price was right. Brunch even came with a drink. I got the bloody mary and my friend got a mimosa. All in all, Joe's hasn't disappointed me yet. read more

I like Joe's typically, but I live in Boston and I have ventured out enough to other places to not put all of my eggs in this basket. If you are not from Boston or you don't get out as often as you would like to, then I would not recommend Joes. It is a chain restaurant with a non-genuine Boston feel. If you like the view, walk around the waterfront until your hungry and then go somewhere in Faneuil or the North End. I don't recommend Joe's for groups of more than four or for special occasions. I wanted to have lunch at Joe's for my graduation and it was really disappointing, which is my own fault (see above). They sat us in a corner table where we had to awkwardly squeeze in and we are all slender. The nachos we ordered were burnt and they brought out the salads immediately, not to mention the fact that I had asked for salad dressing on the side. Shortly thereafter, before we had finished our nachos, our entrees came out. I ordered steak tips cooked medium and they were well done. The mushroom gravy was lukewarm. I flagged down our server and had them sent back. When they came out a second time, a manager came and asked me to cut into them. when I did, it was obvious they were well done again. The manager told me that it must be the lighting. I knew it was pointless to complain and didn't want to hold up my party so I tried to eat them, but they were too chewy. This was not a typical experience at Joes, but don't leave your visit to Boston or special occasion to chance. read more

We had a reservation for 6:45 and were seated minutes after that time. We ordered a buffalo chicken dip and they brought out buffalo chicken tenders. Most likely because our server did not write a single thing down. We got the dip a few minutes after correcting them on their mistake and they said the tenders were on the house. Our meals came and everything was correct and cooked well. The burger had too much chipotle mayo on it and that was all that my boyfriend tasted. When the bill came, the tenders were added on to the bill even though they said they were on the house because we never even ordered them. Overall, average experience and good food. Just wish that our server would pay more attention to detail and write down orders, especially with how busy they were, so we were not waiting for our actual appetizer. Also, to remember to not put the chicken tenders on the bill when said they were on the house because we wanted to head put and had to wait even longer for the correct bill. read more

Ate at many places on a recent week-long trip to Boston, ate here on last night, wasn't expecting that much, mainly based on name (lesson in not judging a book by its cover). Atmosphere nice and upscale, good lighting and great view of harbor. Server, Alima (might be Akima) was one of best servers I've ever had because she was very observant and efficient, and friendly without being obsequious. Saw me looking at a plate of food that went by me and without me needing to ask, said "I saw you glancing at that plate, that dish was .......". Never had a server that observant. Ordered fish and chips...best I've ever had...very light batter, thick piece of perfectly cooked cod, good coleslaw. Best clam chowder I had in Boston (beats The Black Rose...sorry Rose, and WAY better than Oyster House, which tasted like canned Campbell's.). GREAT cocktail - Original Back Bay Sangria ...one of best cocktails I've ever had! All factors weighed together, best dinner in Boston...will definitely be back on next trip. read more

Went to Joe's for brunch yesterday, and was not disappointed. Sure, this is a relatively unimaginative place to eat when you're in a vibrant, restaurant-rich city such as Boston. But once you get past the embarrassment of actually choosing to eat here, it's pleasant. The weather was lovely and we sat outside in their nice patio overlooking the water, and everyone at our table ordered omelets. The egg white and veggie, the farmer's, and the steak and boursin omelets were what we ordered- and they were all fantastic. The bread and tangerine butter was also tasty. Prices were totally reasonable and the service was friendly. Only true complaint was the wait time for actually receiving our entrees- but it was a busy Sunday morning, so it was to be expected. I'd eat here again without hesitation, with the asterisk that it's a fine choice if other well-known weekend bruncheries are booked. read more

We went here on said random night as I was getting back from the airport and it's right around the corner from the bf. A decent place. Their menu options weren't bad but weren't SO awesome. Drinks were reasonable, and they had TVs in view of the main dining area so the bf was happy (Sox were playing at the time). This was a great brunch spot! Hard to beat sitting on the streets of Boston, eating a classic American Breakfast, and drinking a Bloody Mary. This place was very close to my hotel so I gave it a try. The food is ok. Typical American pub fair. But the service was exceptional. Rocco was my server and he was not just polite but super attentive. As a woman traveling alone most of the times, having dinner alone is a dreadful experience. Rocco was totally awesome. Ok. Just ok. I came here after coming into the city for my final day of summer. I got a sandwich and fries for lunch. The sandwich was fine but the fries were different. They were hand-cut, which Im all for, if there good. These were flavorless and needed salt or somthing. The highlight of my experience was dessert. I got the brownie sundae, which my waiter reccomended, and it was hot and great. My waiter was nice and funny but was a little slow. Came here on a Friday night for dinner. Did not need a reservation for our party of 5 but we did wait for about 15-20 minutes. The wait was not bad since the bar wasn't too crowded and we just got drinks while we waited. When we were finally seated, they did put us at a nice corner table where we had a pretty view of the water. As far as the food, it was pretty average. I ordered their specialty burger which was pretty good but a bit too greasy because of the thick piece of pork belly. Food wise, this place did not strike me as a culinary mecca, but if you are a less adventurous eater, they do have your basics.
