We went last might with another couple to Joey's Place for the first time. We were all in the mood for fish frys and Joey's delivered! Definitely a hidden gem; fish was huge and cooked perfectly. The cole slaw and German potato salad were homemade and some of the best we have ever had. This is a great new addition to Hertel Ave. The staff is friendly and great happy hour prices. I had my first beef on weck in a few years and it was the best i have ever had. Simple moist delicious beef on a Kimmelweck roll with nothing but some horseradish on the side, the way it should be. My date had the chicken parm dinner, it was huge. All meals are very well priced for the laid back atmosphere here. They also have darts and quickdraw. My only gripe was maybe the food took a little longer than anticipated but we did not mind and it was worth the wait. We have been here twice for lunch and once for dinner. Food is good but not great. Each lunch I had a beef on weck. The first one was piled high with meat but the next time there was about half as much. Need to be consistent folks. At our dinner we found they had no clue how to make a martini. First, I'd like to start by saying that I've eaten here many, many times and the food has always been excellent; sometimes the service ...ah...not so much ..but I've been sympathetic in the past because I know restaurants are having a terrible time getting enough wait staff. But after awhile, enough is enough. Me and a friend went there on the Sunday before Father's Day to enjoy a meal right after seeing Little Anthony and the Imperials at the Rivera. We sat down and waited a long time before anyone even said hello. When the waitress came to our table (we've had her before; she's very nice but she's very slow and it seems like she hides out in the kitchen A LOT) she warned us that the kitchen was a cook short so service was a bit slow. My friend and I have about 50 years of combined restaurant experience so it's pretty easy for us to access problems. We couldn't understand why there were so many dirty, empty tables with an empty handed hostess on floor. My friend wanted to add 5 flat chicken wings to her finger order. Even though she and her husband eat there on a regular basis and everyone in there at least knows them by face, the hostess said no. The cook should have been asked, not the hostess. So I changed my order from a single all flats to a double all flats. After about 1/2 hour the hostess comes over and to tell me that the kitchen had dropped the wings but one order of 10 was not all flats. She went on to say that they were 2 cooks short (must have been dropping like flies back there) and it would take 25 minutes to cook more. I AM a cook. You fry wings for 25 minutes you'll be serving chickenwingjerky! I insisted on being served what I ordered. In short it took 1.5 hours to be served all that we ordered: 15 minutes for our order to be taken, 30 minutes to get 2 chef salads (1 large, one small-and we had to ask another waitress to find our waitress to even get them) and an additional 45 minutes for our main course which consisted of 1 double order of chicken wings and one order of chicken fingers for a total of 1.5 hours! The food came (eventually) and it was fine, but the lack of customer's did not justify the wait. When we were done, no offer of coffee or desert, just slammed the check. read more

We had visited Joey's place previously for cocktails and enjoyed the Artichoke Francaise and another app, so decided to try it for dinner... very disappointing overall. Fries were very undercooked (still borderline transparent), the buffalo chicken sandwich had decent flavor, but only had one thin (and small) chicken finger, where the biggest disappointment was the roast beef sandwich - flavor was okay, but couldn't even chew it from the cut either being a cheap/low grade roast or just an unlucky cut. Close to home, but don't think we'd ever go back for food. Would have been 1 star for food, but increased to 2 due to friendly staff and quick delivery in food. read more

My husband and I stumbled upon Joey's Place on a snowy Saturday afternoon. We were both pleasantly surprised. First off, the place was very clean. Not the biggest place, but since it was an off time when we were having a late lunch we sat at the bar. The bartender (Amy) gave us a few suggestions. I ordered the Beef on Weck; my husband ordered the potroast sandwich. Both sandwiches were excellent. The beef on weck was tender and juicy. The roll was not overly salted with the perfect amount of salt to compliment the beef and horseradish. My husband devoured his potroast sandwich. I managed to sneak a bite and it melted in my mouth. We also decided to try a meatball. YUM! The meatballs were tender and the sauce was excellent. We will definitely return to Joey's Place. There were a number of items on the menu that we would like to try...will take more trips to try everything we would like to try. Great job!!! read more

We were really excited to try this restaurant out. Not really happy with the service as our drink order took 15 minutes to get on the table. Our appetizer literally came five minutes before our entrées. We ordered another round of beers and never receive them. My chef salad was awful and there was definitely not chicken on the plate because it tasted like pork. I had a head of iceberg lettuce on the plate. Usually restaurants that serve salads serve romaine or caesar. I probably will never go back, when I mentioned about the pork.. the owner came over in a very rude manner and practically yelled at me and the whole entire restaurant got quiet. My husband and I went looking for beef on weck while in Buffalo, and this experience way exceeded our expectations. The beef was melt-in-your mouth tender and juicy and the roll was perfect. My German potato salad had to be made while I waited, but it was totally worth it. The draft beer selection was small, but I found a great local brew among them. More importantly, we had a wonderful time talking to the bartender Amy and the owner (Joey, duh). We came in as strangers and it felt homey when we left. If I could give zero stars, I would. My husband and I both got scallop dinners. Menu says 8 fried scallops, potatoe, veg. The waitress took orders but not what potatoe and veg we wanted. Told her when she came back to table with our luke-warm crab cake appetizer. She said vegs are broccoli or corn or mixed vegetables. When my dinner arrived there wss cold corn, barely warm mashed potatoe with no gravy or butter just dry. My husband's mixed veggies were cooked into mooshie unedible yuck. Both of us got way more than 8 scallops because they were tiny, miniscule smaller than a dime and coated with breading 3 times bigger than the scallop itself. I guess that's why there were more than 8 but I couldn't eat them because they were not the large scallops I was expecting, and not what was on the menu. My husband ate his because he was so hungry, but couldn't eat the mixed veggies (which we were charged an extra $2.99 for and not advised prior). They did take the $20 off my meal, but I gurss since my poor husband ate his lousy scallops, they didn't adjust off his. Anyway, it was a very bad experience and we won't be back. read more

We ordered two beer battered fish fries and one broiled fish and a fish sandwich that comes with cheese on it. The broiled fish was perfectly cooked and delicious. I asked for malt vinegar to go and the guy at the bar "Joey" gave me a bottle to take with me since he had no customers eating in because of Covid 19. We will definitely be back! read more

This was our second visit to the Tonawanda location. We loved Joey's on Hertel. Our first visit in Tonawanda was a bust. We waited 40 minutes for our table with a reservation, and only after we reminded the hostess we were still waiting. The food was just marginal and reflected the problems in the kitchen. We waited 45 minutes for our meal after the salads and they took 35 minutes. This visit suggested we were walking into the same issues. The tables were overbooked and the kitchen was seriously backed up. We stood in a bar area that was packed with people waiting for tables. This time, after waiting 30 minutes, we left. We weren't even close to getting seated and based on what I was watching people had been seated for quite a while and weren't served yet. I give up. Sorry. read more

We made a reservation for dinner with family that live in the area. We were seated in the lower level and it was like they weren't expecting us, 2 round tables were pushed together with awkward seating. We made the best of it since we were getting together to catch up and figured it was fine. We had a waitress take our dink orders and immediately told us she was not a wait staff but worked in the kitchen. We waited from 6:00-7:30 before she came back, we asked her for some water she continued to apologize and got us some water. Finally another waitress came and gave us our drinks, they were not the right drinks but we took them anyway. Our order was taken 2 times by 2 different people. We had to ask for some rolls, and our dinner still was not out. When our dinners finally came out some were cold, some were not the correct order, not all the food came out at once so some of us were finished eating as other orders were still being served. I had to get silverware from the table next to ours, since the table were not really set. We did not leave the restaurant until 8:30 (we had a 6:00 reservation). I volunteered to go get the bill so we could leave. The owner was at the station and when I told him the dinners were not good, he said that was not true and rudely walked away. He never came to our table and apologized for our stressful evening. He did take money off our bill but that was not the point we spent the entire evening not able to enjoy ourselves, various staff came to the table to apologize, also we were not the only ones that had problems there were 2 other groups of tables with the same thing happening. They obviously over booked and were not prepared to take on the amount of people that made reservations. I would have rather they would have told use they did not have the ability to serve us. Kept going by this place for over a year or two now and kept saying I have to go see what that place is about. Always saw a few people at the bar on those Monday night blues. I thought it was going to be a drive bar but it really want pretty nice. Clean bathrooms small and newer floors and bar. The bartender was super nice and when I ordered wine she looked at the bottle that was open less then half way and said I'm going to open you a fresh one. Which was super nice because most bar chance it. We got the shrimp cocktail which was cheap and deff precooked shrimp but I didn't care, I keep shrimp like that at family parties all the time. I have to start out by saying the remodel to this restaurant is beautiful and the staff are very nice and attentive. The owner is very welcoming and nice also. The first time we tried the food I had the French onion soup which was a bit bland but not horrible and the fried ravioli which was good and the shrimp cocktail was big and fresh, My Moms steak sandwich didn't have much flavor. The second time we tried the food wasn't good. I ordered the "Jumbo" fried shrimp and when it came it didn't have any tails so I asked the server if it was the fried shrimp and she said yes it's popcorn shrimp. It was very fishy and I honestly couldn't eat it. I hate complaining but I had to tell the server so she had come back and told me it was scallops. I asked for the cheese ravioli instead and it tasted like frozen ravioli you get at the grocery store, the sauce tasted like it came out of a can and the meatballs had absolutely no flavor to them. I really wanna see this restaurant succeed but I think they are gonna have to get new cooks and a new menu. read more

My husband and I and 2 other couples just left Joey's. We have been there several times for dinner and lunch. Until tonight, I would have praised everything about that restaurant, but when the music started, the noise was deafening. We couldn't even hold a conversation with the person right next to us it was so loud. I love Sinatra music, but the acoustics in that place are horrible. Several times we asked the waitress to see if they could turn it down, but it never happened. As we left, I told the owner that it was way too loud for the dinner crowd, and he proceeded to tell me that the bar crowd loves it and that's what matters. Fine, then don't have a dinner crowd, or wait until the dinner crowd is gone! It was only 8:00!! As I was leaving, he turned to a woman by the door and called me "a mean woman". He didn't realize she was with us! I am not mean, I am an unsatisfied customer,which he apparently doesn't care about. Fine, sir, you have lost a lot of business. We keep our boat near by, and there are many of us that go out Friday and Saturday nights during the summer. Your restaurant is off our list. Will it affect you, no probably not, but you are suppose to be a place of business caring about your customers, but you showed tonight that my business is not wanted. Shame on you! read more
