I've been keeping my eye on this place ever since the Parasite movie came out. Everyone was talking about how to make the instant ramen combination, but people were also talking about the inspiration from the actual Korean - Chinese dish of spicy seafood stew (Jjamppong, or ) and black bean noodles (Jjajangmyeon, or ). I've only had the instant version, so I was so excited to try the restaurant version. I don't know why, but from the photos this place looked kind of small and like a place teens go to hang out. But when I arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see this place was big, and felt like a nicer Korean-Chinese restaurant. The place was very clean and there were a couple of families eating there. And oh my gosh that place smelled amazing. There's a convenient bus stop right by the restaurant, and there's street parking around the neighborhood. When we sat down they gave us the choice of ice water or hot water. I also noticed they had soju, and I wanted to try some. So we asked for the grape flavor, but unfortunately, they were out. They gave us kimchi, yellow pickle, onions, and black bean paste? I'm not sure what the black sauce was. It was a bit bland and salty. We sat down as a party of 3, and got the free fried dumplings when you check into Yelp! We also got the Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup, and the Jja Jang Myun & Jjang Bbong noodles combo. She warmed us that the spicy seafood Noodle Soup was really spicy (my friend ordered the A12). He really likes spicy. I got the spicy noodle combo, and my friend for the less spicy noodle combo without the hot peppers. The food arrived very fast after placing the orders. One of the noodle combos, and seafood stew was served 10 mins after we ordered. Then a bit later the other noodle combo was served. They also gave us little dishes to eat from, and a large bowl with scissors for us to put our seafood shells in, and to cut up our noodles if they were too long. The seafood stew was spicy with the jalapeno peppers and chili peppers? It was very satisfying and hot. There were tons of onions, shrimp, octopus, squid, mussels, and prawns in the spicy seafood noodle soup. Then for the black bean noodles there were a ton of onions as well,, with zucchini, and potatoes in the sauce. Portions were ginormous. We had to remind our server that we were still waiting on the dumplings. But we eventually got them. And it was worth the wait. The dumplings tasted fresh and homemade! They were so good! After we asked for the bill, we got these little desserts, I think it's fried dough coated in crystallized sugar. It was a nice compliment to the end of the meal. Definitely a good spot to enjoy some Korean-Chinese food. One thing I noticed, is almost every table ordered the fried chicken. That seemed to be a popular order. I can see why they get HUGE plates of fried boneless chicken with sauce. Ir looked so good eveytime a server would walk by with one of those plates. I'll have to try that next time. I like Korean Chinese food but I couldn't find any good places for it in NY. I am glad I finally found one :) Their Spicy Ja Jang Myun was very tasty. The sauce had a good flavor. The pepper Jiam pong had a good amount of spiciness and I really liked the soup. I tried Tangsu Shrimp and Tangsu Tofu too. The Tangsu sauce had a good balance of sweetness and sourness. There are many Chinese-Korean restaurants in Queens that serve jajjangmyun but this restaurant is one of my favorites. I've been here for both sit down and take out and always enjoyed the service. The staff is very kind and the service is always quick. The must is of course the jajjangmyun and tangsooyuk. The sauce to noodles ratio is just perfect and the the seafood noodles (jjampong) is also packed with lots of seafood in its broth! For the fried meat (you can choose pork, chicken, beef, even shrimp), I've tried the red pepper sauce, sour garlic and pepper sauce and the classic sweet and sour sauce and they were all pretty good but you can never go wrong with the sweet and sour sauce! I also like that they have a spicy version of their jajjangmyun as well as jjampong which does add a good kick to the original flavors! Overall, definitely recommend this spot! Got takeout for lunch and my boyfriend and I ordered jjajangmyun and tangsuyuk. Highly recommend! The jjajangmyun was full of flavor and the noodles were the perfect texture. The tangsuyuk is a must! It's so crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The portions were more than enough for two people. I think the pricing is fairly reasonable. I appreciate that they separate the sauces from the noodles and the pork so they don't get soggy by the time we got to eat it. Joong Koog Jip is now one of my top spots to go to for some good Korean-Chinese food. read more

A place I frequent quite often for my craving of Chinese-Korean dishes. I usually order the Jajangmyeon which is a black bean based sauce with noodles, zucchini, potatoes, and pork. Noodles are Al-dente and coated generously with sauce. Yesterday I visited Joong Koog Jip and got the trifecta of tang soo yuk, Jajangmyeom and Jjamppong. I usually can eat spicy but I opted for the non-spicy version. It was soooo good. The blend of the seafood in the jjamppong created a perfect harmony in the noodle soup. Overall a decent experience for Korean food in NYC. Staff was very accommodating along with a fairly clean dining area. Service fairly quick as well, along with decent prices for food. Now the restaurant specializes in Chinese-Korean dishes such as jajangmyun (black bean paste noodles), kkhanpunggi (fried chicken), or tangsuyuk (fried pork). There is banchan at the beginning of the meal, which was mainly kimchi, onions and pickled radishes. Couple things were that the jajangmyun I ordered was a bit heavy with the onions, but otherwise plenty of flavor with seafood, noodles and sauce. Also one of the members in our party said the sauces for the kkhanpunggi and tangsuyuk were backwards, though liked how the sauce was served in a separate bowl from the tangsuyuk so it didn't get soggy. Didn't have high expectations for parking, but there is a "customer" parking lot for two cars behind the restaurant. And of course both spaces were occupied. read more

My favorite spot to get spicy ja jang myun. Not sure why this location is rated lower than their other one. Dining indoors here (pre 2020) was great. Most of the food was pretty good albeit expensive. I think Joong Koog Jip uses higher quality noodles for their ja jang myun and the spice is worth the extra dollar. It's pretty spicy, unlike many other places which claim it. My only gripe is that the sauce doesn't contain that much meat or potatoes -- instead, it's mainly onions. But I see that everywhere else so I guess people prefer eating...onions over meat or potatoes. The sauce is so tasty so I always want to finish every drop. But the noodles are also great so I finish all the noodles before the sauce runs out. So I usually order a second helping of noodles. If you're ordering takeout, I recommend dunking the noodles in boiling water for a few seconds to separate them. Otherwise you're just left with a clump of noodles and too much sauce. read more

You know how there's American Chinese food, like general tso's chicken? For those of you who don't already know this, Koreans have their own take on Chinese food, and as a Chinese person, I can assure you it is noticeably quite different but also extremely delicious. It's Korean food. A korean take on Chinese food. I got their vegetable Ja Jang Myun. For just $8, it came in a huge portion. It was very tasty but the vegetables within were 90% onions, 5% zucchini, 5% potatoes so it does feel like you get what you paid for. The kimchi was way too salty for my taste, especially with the already salty ja jang myeon-I couldn't enjoy the side dishes. Still, it was a solid choice and I really should not complain, at that price. Finally, their dessert gets 5 stars or maybe 10. It's one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten. There are a bunch of korean-chinese restaurants in the neighborhood and this might be our favorite. We got the sweet and sour fried beef, black bean noodles, kimchi fried rice and mapo tofu. Been here several times and overall its hard to give this place a better rating than 3. Perhaps I might have once rated it a 4, but since then, the portion size has greatly reduced and the flavor of some of the dishes has gone down. Last time I went, I got the jjajjangmyeun, pepper seafood jjammppong, and the tangsooyook. The jjajjang was excellent. Almost nothing I could complain about the richness of the sauce filled with onions, potatoes, and little bits of deliciously simmered meat. Great place to eat with friends and family. Affordable and decent sized portions. Super filling and satisfying. They're famous for their jjam jja myun and I understand why, it's delicious! The noodles have a great chew and the sauce has a perfect consistency and good balance of flavor. Also they give you a pair of scissors to cut your noodles, so do not worry about having to chew a long noodle. Their jjam pong (seafood noodle soup) is great too! There's a generous amount of seafood ( squid, shrimp, and mussel), the soup is not too spicy and the noodles are fine. When you ask for the check they will give you these small sweet fried dough balls and mind I say I prefer these than when restaurant give mints! And remeber to sign in on yelp, they give you a free plate of 8 fried dumpling!! The place is clean and has lots of windows, which is nice because if you go early you get lots of sunlight. You definitely get a bang for your buck here. Food here is cheap and portion is huge. And the food actually taste pretty good too. However the waitress could really have done a much better job. I asked for my jjam pong soup and noddles separate. However she said "oh sorry but we cannot do that because the noddles and the soup are already made together". We all know this is bull. there's no way the noddles are already in with the soup. The noddle will get super soggy. She literally just did not want to go through the trouble since it was a relatively busy Saturday night. Secondly, we had someone in our dinner party that does not eat pork for religious reasons. And yes we know they routinely put pork in the jjamjjam sauce. But when we placed the order, the waitress assured us that no meat will be put in the sauce. And it will be purely vegetarian. Guess what? When that jjamjjiam sauce came out, our dinner mate took a big bite of the sauce with his fried rice, and it had big pieces of pork inside. To me that is just purely unacceptable. When he called the waitress over, she assured us it was not meat but beans. Another bull from the waitress. The sauce was indeed made with small pieces of bean inside but it also came with chunks of pork with skin on it. Overall, I think the experience could have been much better if we had a different, more experienced, caring waitress. And again, food was pretty decent and cheap. This place is pretty nice and has a home-y feel to it when you walk in. I like that their portions are decently big for the amount they charge. I have had their popular black bean noodles and the popular fried meat dish (not entirely sure the name) everybody orders. This place seems to always be busy at night and the staff are very friendly and nice. The only thing a little bit bothersome is that during the dinner rush hours, it is hard to flag down a waiter to come to your table since they are so busy and there are only a few circulating around. This has been my fourth time coming to this restaurant and I still am in love with it. Prices have not changed since I came here three years ago (at least I don't think that they have changed). I always get their jjajangmyeon and their jjampong. Even though I thinkt heir jjampong is much better, I always end up getting both. If you are going with someone you know who wants both as well, I recommend you split the full bowl rather than getting the half and half option (half jjajangmyeon and half jjampong in one bowl). The price to get them pre-split is a few dollars more than getting the individual bowl. The food is good and the price is cheap -- about $8-9 for a bowl of noodles that will guarantee to get you full (I couldn't finish my bowl) They also give you a small dessert at the end, glazed fried dough -- its really good trust me. read more

Came here for a quick dinner with my brother & sister in-law... my brother was pretty hangry so we ordered as quickly as possible, but the food took such a long time to come out. He was super unhappy. We had to get the waitress's attention more than once & they never even came to our table throughout our meal to check in on us to see if we needed anything. We observed as the waitress (who took our order) roamed around to serve entrees to the guests at two other tables who clearly came in after we did. This is unacceptable... it's an obvious red flag pointing to their internal problems. They had maybe 5-6 waiters/waitresses in the front just standing around... not doing much (while the restaurant was starting to fill up maybe 10 mins after we had gotten there). My guess is they don't train their waiting staff properly and/or they just don't know the basic 101's on food industry & hospitality. Terrible service. As for the food, we ordered the Shrimp Fried Rice, Jjam Jja Myun (jja jang myun + jjampong), Japchae Rice, & a Tang Soo Yook to share. Food was alright. My japchae bap was slightly underseasoned and the bell peppers were undercooked maybe 30 more seconds. The other dishes were fine & their best star dish was the Tang Soo Yook, which came perfectly fried & crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Beef was tender and juicy & the sauce was nicely sweet & sour. Gave it a 2 star only because the food wasn't too bad. Otherwise, this restaurant doesn't deserve more than 1 star at this point. Food gave me some serious gas! Service was good and fast and the place looked clean. I always come to Joong Koog Jip when I'm craving black beans noodles. I've been coming here since I was a kid and it has always stayed pretty consistent. I usually get black bean noodles and the pork tang soo yook. The noodles are chewy and savory and when you eat it with the yellow radish?! Chefs kiss! The tang soo yook is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I would recommend ordering it with the sauce on the side so it doesn't get soggy; this ensures you get a crispy bite every time! And they give you a complimentary dessert, I don't know what the name is but it's addicting. It caramel iced on the outside and this chewy bready consistency on the inside. The worst Jja Jang Myun in my 50 years! I picked up Seafood Jia Ja Jang Myun and found only few small pieces of chopped squid, 3 shrunken tiny mussel meats and 2 shrimps as small and round as a nickel and also too dry and hard to chew. They use lots of cheap imitation crap meat (the red chunks shown in the photo). The noodle smells funny &funky because I think they use packaged frozen seafood that is seen at grocery stores. We came for lunch around 2 pm on a Saturday afternoon, and the restaurant was still crowded. We ordered jajangmyun (black bean sauce with noodles), jampong (spicy seafood noodle soup), and kampoongi (fried chicken in a sweet and spicy sauce). The noodles here are good! They're fresh and chewy. You need to cut them a bit because they're quite long. The jajang is tasty, but it's not the best I've ever had. The seafood in the jampong is really fresh too. The kampoongi has a lot of chicken in it, and it's crispy. I don't think it would taste good to-go because it'd get too soggy. The portions are fillings, especially for the price. The service is very Korean in the sense of the ordering style and personalities. I thought the service was overall ok. One of the less savory memories when it came to dating Chinese girls involve sampling the "special delicacies" at their family gatherings (pickles and organ meats, or some type of spicy or vinegary goo) and trying (as hard as I may) to make the lady-of-the-moment go to some of the places that I enjoy. You don't do head meat on tacos, raw oysters, bloody slabs of steer or pit roasted lamb with a large piece of hubcap bread off a tandoor? I don't think we are going to be together for long. Well, fortunately, the missus enjoy my culinary insanity. She likes Huitlacoche (look that one up), weird sodas (Zhandukrelli and Uludag) and weird cheeses (I once trolled her into putting a Quebec abbey raw milk blue cheese under her armpit to "warm it up for consumption" at Centre Desjardin). And as part of being a caring, nurturing life partner, I accommodate her culinary viewpoints. That involves Korean style Chinese. Korean style Chinese is...different. In most other parts of the world, when people think of Chinese cuisine, it's a derivative of Cantonese. Southern China was the poorer and more agricultural part of the nation, and when it's time to leave the motherland in search of fortune and adventure, it's the lads from the Southern fishing villages who venture into the lands unknown - it's their descendants who influenced what is considered "classic" Chinese cuisine in those foreign lands. There's always an exception to the rule - one being South Korea. They got the Northerners instead due to geographic proximity. The flavor of the Chinese cuisine there are derived from the flavors around Shandong province (the area directly south of Beijing), Hebei (surrounding Beijing) and Liaoling (east of that), and it reflects upon the menus of Joong Koog Jip. Take, for instance, Jajangmyeon (炸醬麵) - it's a Shandongese recipe for noodles cooked in a black bean sauce that was saturated in cooking oil to the point where it looks deep fried (hence 炸醬, or deep fried sauce - and don't worry, the oil is poured off later). There's Nanja Wantz (南煎丸子), which is a braised meatball recipe that was supposed to represent the joy of family reunions. Oh, and in case you are wondering what tangsuyu (糖醋肉) means, it's sugar vinegar meat AKA sweet-n-sour pork, and that's a northern Chinese dish using a technique called velveting to give the meat pieces a crispy, almost tempura-like crust for separate dipping. Alright, enough about the menu. Is the place good? Well, it's spacious and clean, and service is decent. Decor is modern and can sit quite a few diners, although you might have to share the rows of tables, Chinese style. When it comes to the food, however, it's only so-so. The jajangmyeon was a bit bland (the onions are not browned), and their nanja wantz have this weird texture that tastes not-very-meaty. Not sure if they overdid it with the binders and the meat glue (transglutaminase), but it just tastes weird (it's supposed to be like a Salisbury steak). The dessert is the usual fried dough glazed in syrup, which is similar to what you'll get in Northeastern Chinese (Dongbei) restaurants like Fu-Run in Flushing. That being said, they have a sister store with the same name that does a much better job in Murray Hill near the LIRR stop. These places (both in Northern and Murray hill) are one of the best Korean-Chinese food places in Queens. I'd recommend here to anybody if they are craving for some Tangsooyuk (fried pork with sweet sauce) and Gganpoong saewoo (fried shrimp with sweet sauce) because I always order these two when I go here with more people. Jjajangmyun with jjangbong half and half with tangsooyook both of which are AMAZING!!!. The atmosphere was very quiet which was another good thing in my opinion!. Can't wait to come back again!
