My experience at Joyce was top tier! Came in on a Thursday night with no reservation. My husband and I were lucky to be sat right away. Great atmosphere, nice decor, even better music. Hubby had a beer and I had one or their orange wines. My first time trying orange wine so I have nothing to compare it too but it was light and refreshing. We started off with the cast iron Mac n cheese. It was creamy cheesy and delicious. The stout gave it a flavor that I'm not used too when it comes to Mac n cheese but we had no complaints whatsoever. Next we had the duck confit. Best I've ever had. It was an explosion of flavors in your mouth that all came together and complimented each other well. Last we had the beignets and some honey lavender ice cream. Cafe du monde don't have NOTHING on these beignets. They were light and fluffy with the perfect amount of sweetness. The bourbon vanilla dulce de leche sauce on the side was sooo good I had some packaged to go. The raspberry sauce was great too. The honey lavender ice cream taste like vanilla ice cream with very subtle hints of honey and lavender. It was perfect. Service was phenomenal. I saw Joyce making it's rounds on IG and thought I'd come give it a try. I was definitely torn between brunch and dinner, eventually settling for brunch. I said if the brunch was good then I would revisit for dinner and get all the food I drooled. Unfortunately the Punk Evans & Hootie hoo are not served at Brunch which is disappointing. I rather non-dairy alcoholic beverages and didn't have much options at brunch. Joyce is located right next to Whole Foods so you can eat first and do your grocery shopping after to walk off that yummy food. The interior decor is so cozy and beautiful with the pastel colors, furniture, painting.. Hostess was friendly and we waited a few minutes before being seated. Alcohol Beverage: Waitress recommended the mimosas with choice of flavored ice cube (orange, pomegranate and peach) so we had pomegranate. 4.5/5 Food choices: Shrimp cocktail: 5/5 Chicken & Waffle: 4/5 Tinned Scallops: 2/5 personally not my things. Finally tried Joyce and was super excited. Came in for happy hour after a friend said was great! While the food was okay the ambiance and service were nice. Ambiance- so pretty inside and great music. We Felt welcomed by all staff and the restaurant gave great energy Staff- also super great. Very kind and knowledgeable about the menu. Drinks- the freezer martini on happy hour isn't very cold... I do not think my glass was chilled as my martini was pretty warm by 10 minutes. Food- this is where I wish Joyce was better at. I got the scallop crudo and the first one I had was nice, bright, and briny. but the second scallop was pretty fishy and not enjoyable. I loved the flaky salt but there was such a chunky flake that I actually thought it was shell. The hush puppies were fine, they were pretty bland and the Cajun poblano butter was super whipped and oily. I did add some hot sauce which was nice but for some reason my husband and I both had a difficult time getting hot sauce out of the bottle (which was weird because the sauce was pretty thin). The most disappointing food was the macaroni. I want to shout out that the macaroni is cooked from scratch to order which in theory would make amazing macaroni. However, the macaroni was dry, cheesy but not creamy, and needed salt/pepper. The macaroni is finished off in a broiler but it dries out the noddles so much they were crispy and very dry. A professional, young man who has paid his dues and has this restaurant to show for it. They have a bar and happy hour. We sat there because they were booked solid. We sat directly across from the window and saw the dishes come out one by one. They have everything from collards to shrimp and grits, catfish, etc. we tried the shrimp hush puppies and oysters (we had another dinner planned since they were booked) for happy hour and the beignets. OMG. Good, clean, well seasoned deliciousness. We failed to photograph the oysters but my guy ordered extra bread to sop up the "brown liquor" from the oyster dish. He loved it. I had the hush puppies. If we had more time and didn't have dinner planned, we would've gone for a second serving for each dish. We topped it off with some yummy beignets. Joyce is possibly one of my favorite restaurants I've ever been to. The raw scallops topped with white peach and an amazing oil and Caesar salad were some of the best I've ever had. I have a pretty severe food allergy and it makes eating out very hard. The quality of the ingredients is paramount to anything else that's important; often times the quality of the Parmesan cheese makes me very very sick because it's just generic Cisco brand this meal was different from fresh high-quality food and the Black Eyed Peas as a crunch were such a great addition. I visited this soul food restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the original menu. The appetizers were interesting, and the food had an upscale and unique depth. However, the new menu features Nashville hot catfish, which is salty and lacks flavor. In contrast, the original dish was nicely seasoned and coated in a golden cornmeal crust. We went for brunch on a Sunday. First, the service was amazing. Our server was great and the food and drinks came out relatively quick. The drinks were also good - we did the build your own mimosa kit and the pomegranate ice cube were really good. The food however is where things declined. We order quite a few entrees and had to send them back. The biscuits and gravy, Mac and cheese, and shrimp n grits were really good. The greens and smash burger were not favored. It's always been important for me to support black owned and black inspired restaurants and stores; it was engrained in me from a young age. And y'all, this is my new favorite place! My partner and I first went to Joyce to celebrate Valentine's Day and it was everything. We had their Hokkaido scallops on half shell, cast iron mac & cheese, gullah geechee style braised kale, whole friend mary's game hen, and the 40 hour braised short rib. Every dish was filled with complex, rich flavor profiles that made us wish we had a second stomach to eat more! Plus the way the restaurant is decorated is so gorgeous, it almost feels like a luxurious sleep train taking us to France. On our second visit, we went to brunch for my birthday. The edisto island cornbread and sunday collards brought actual tears to my eyes; it tasted like my grandmother and great-great grandmother made this food! My partner got the crunchy panko french toast and I got the truffled scrambled eggs toast and it was divine. The eggs were creamy, the truffle provided a soft earthy taste, and the garlic aioli was so fragrant and sharp; it cut right through the creaminess of the eggs. And to top it all off, my partner gave me a private proposal and poured his heart out to me. The team at Joyce gave us a few gifts and got a photo of us sobbing and in love. For lunch, we had the honey lavender fried chicken hen, which was very tasty, along with two pieces of their delicious cornbread topped with a salt and pepper butter spread, and a side of Mac & cheese. Everything was packed with flavor! While I do wish the fried chicken was served as whole pieces instead of the smaller hen, especially for the price, the quality and taste were excellent. The sauces worked great together but also taste great individually too. This is a great dessert to get if you want something sweet but are pretty full, because the beignets, being pate a choux, are very airy and light, kind of but not really like cotton candy. Honestly I don't drink alcohol much anymore but the non-alcoholic sparkler I had and espresso with dessert were both just right. Our server was lovely and gave us great recommendations, and dishes came out of the kitchen fast and well executed - unusual for a restaurant of this caliber that has barely been open for a week. You'll be very well taken care of here at every level of service. Everyone we interacted with was very nice and welcoming. The atmosphere is like upscale American South seaside - greenery and shades of sky blue with warm taupe & wicker decor makes for a bright and airy feel, upbeat and at ease. I saw a couple with their newborn baby having an easy early dinner, but mostly two-tops giving date night vibes or besties catching up. A group of friends would be comfortable dining here, and there is a bit of outside seating as well, perfect for those with canine dining companions. I didn't see a designated valet the evening I went, but I parked in the garage across the street which was just as convenient for $7. The cornbread was heavenly~ It's a lovely restaurant but I don't think it's worth the price - everything is a bit pricey (drinks are standard prices though) and combined with the parking prices of downtown, it all adds up and I don't think it was worth the whole experience for me. We ordered 2 cocktails, half dozen of raw oysters, cauliflower, honey pork belly, lamb ribs, and beignets, around $75 per person before tips. Honestly, the pork belly was a disaster, while I thought it should've been a safe dish you can't mess it up. It's overly fried, unbelievably dry, we can't even cut it. I was expecting it on a more tender side. And why putting all 3 pieces of them in a small plate? I think using a bigger plate would be better and more convenient for everyone? While the waitress served this plate, her fingers were inside the plate because it was too small to hold on to it... i don't blame her, but I don't even want to know if her fingers touched the food. Another thing really bothering me is the odd amount of pieces for most food we ordered. There were 2 of us, sharing 3 pieces of pork belly, 3 pieces of lamb ribs, and 5 beignets lol. I was frustrated a little, why can't we just have 2 or 4 pieces to share and make our lives easier and more enjoyable. This is quite annoying. We met the owner, Prince, who is from Gullah Geeche country, is personable and just down right friendly. Our server Chrystal was the best! She knew the menu like the back of her hand. I'm well aware what family style was and it made sense that the main entrees were shared amongst everyone but to have us share 1 TINY piece of cornbread with 3 other people after we paid 80 bucks PER PERSON for the experience? come on now. the least yall could've done is provide a couple of them considering the table had 6 people at it......Same thing with the dessert. Instead of each person recieving a small dessert everyone was given the thinnest slice of cake, no presentation just a cake that was clearly too small to be split among the people it had to serve. The Nashville catfish was not seasoned at all with the exception of the outer cornmeal breading..,the shrimp hush puppies were overcooked aka burnt and there were only tiny hints of shrimp present. The collard greens taste like a cup of sugar.The only tasty thing was the fried pickles that came as a garnish with the catfish and the Mac and Cheese was okay, The bill was $189 dollars with the 20% tip for two people. I am SO excited that chef Sammy Monsour is back and cooking in LA! We came for brunch. The shrimp and grits were excellent - they were buttery without being too heavy, and the grits were perfectly al dente (a fun switch up from the typical tomato remolaude versions). The collard greens were seasoned perfectly. The toad in a hole served along side the tinned fish options was a delicious brioche and perfectly soft boiled egg. There were 2 things that I would give high ratings. The ambience and most importantly our waiter Robert! The portions of food were extremely small for the price and needed more seasoning. The pork belly was good although there were 3 of us and there were 3 tiny pieces of pork belly that were 1/3 fat on the top. I like fat but I like meat too. These things were the size of the furry dice that you'd find hanging over a rearview mirror in a car. We thought it was just us being picking so when we're leaving I asked 2 women sitting at a table near us about their meal. Also our waiter kept messing up our drink orders. And while we were talking to a staff member that was not a waiter, someone came and interrupted our conversation saying she needed him. Joyce is a Southern Style Restaurant but not like any of the old style southern restaurants. I think it's important to know that this a more modern southern style with some really good old style flavor influences; if that makes sense. Joyce is a lovely decorated restaurant that gives you a little sense of southern feel on the inside. The menu is somewhat different than a normal southern restaurant but the dishes that we ordered were beautiful presentations and very delicious. For me in the future when I order the catfish; I will ask for it to be fried a little harder as it was a little too soft for me and because it sits on a remoulade sauce that tends to make it a little more mushy. Nonetheless the fish was seasoned nicely and I even loved the fried house pickles even though I'm not a fan of pickles. The honey glazed pork belly was so good and tender and the cast iron Mac & Cheese was the star of the show for me! The cornbread was a treat as well and the Joyce elote was some of the best corn that I've had! Although I came there with a taste for collard greens; I definitely will try the marinated cauliflower and the braised kale as well as several other dishes next time. I ordered one cocktail and it was mixed very well and hit the spot. My husband and I shared the plates we ordered and it was more than enough for two and sadly we were so full we didn't get a chance to try any of the desserts; next time!
