Nice local place in a strip mall. Friendly service. Delicious food that came out quick. Moderate prices. Lots to choose from. Limited seating. Plenty of parking.

I stopped here one night after an appointment in Orange. It was late and close to closing, so I was the only seated guest, but I noticed they get a lot of to-go orders. It was an older couple, I'm guessing it was the owners. They were friendly. Everything I had was fresh. I also ordered the hot tea, and the woman told me it was her own special blend. It was delicious and I drank the whole pot before leaving! Thank you for a great dinner!

Wednesday August 13, 2025 I visited KAI Sushi in Orange with my wife and our baby. It had been years since we been there. After months of not being able to eat sushi due to her pregnancy, my wife asked me to take her there. I remember the place had a great ambience, was clean and most important good food. We got there around 7:30pm, the place was empty, only the owner and a cook were there. We placed our order and waited at our table. About 20 min later a girl came in and placed an order for 1 single sushi roll and asked if she could eat it there, the owner of the restaurant said "no, we close soon" (service hours are from 10am to 9pm) It was only around 8pm. In my opinion she had plenty of time to eat 1 sushi roll before 9pm. Our food arrived at our table. At first glance it looked good, the taste was good but when we asked for hot souse the owner made a face and gave us just a tiny saucer for the 4 rolls we had ordered. That was something we were willing to overlook. We finish our food and I went up to the register to pay for my meal. My total for 4 rolls and 2 can sodas came up to $69.50. I pay $70. The owner with a very demanding tone as she game me my ¢50 change asked "you don't leave tip?". I said I'll leave it at the table. I only had $2 cash in my wallet so I asked my wife if she had any cash on her. She said she had a $10 in the car, I asked my wife to wait by the table. I placed the $2 on the table and stared to walk to exit and go to the car to get the other $10. Before I could set a foot outside I hear the lady saying to my wife in a very upset tone "only $2!! That's it $2?!? You pay $70 and only give $2" My wife looked at me as if asking for help. I said "excuse me? Why are you upset!" I never told her I was gonna go get more money from the car. "That all I have in cash, I'm sorry. But if you don't want them that's okay too". She extended her hand and said "here, you go now, never come back" as she handed back my $2. Now I understand why the place was so empty, when in the past was always busy. First, telling a customer that she can't eat there because they are closing soon, when she had more than one hour till closing time. Second, demanding a tip. I always tip and my intention was to do that, but I guess she didn't have the patience to wait and find out. As she requested I will never go back to that place. There's a lot of sushi restaurants better than KAI in OC, find one, be happy and stay away from KAI.

Food and service is always nice n friendly. Food is soo good. Plenty of seating. Their Bento Box had terriyaki chicken and rice, spicy tuna roll 4pc, salad, tempura, and miso soup

    Ninja Roll

Good healthy food! I had lunch with my daughter at Kai's Sushi today. My daughter ordered ninja special roll, and I ordered combo A with chicken teriyaki, California roll, and miso soup. We both enjoyed our food. Sushi was very good with superb quality of tuna and salmon and the rice was perfectly cooked. Great service, too, and the price was good for what it was worth. I told my boss and my coworkers about it, and my boss already knew about the restaurant. She said it gets pretty busy there, and she agreed about their good food. We would definitely eat at Kai's again!

Every piece was delicious and tasted incredibly fresh, as if it had just come straight from the ocean. The restaurant itself is small and intimate, with a sushi bar and a few tables. We were seated at a table, which was comfortable for lunch. Keep in mind that lunch service ends at 2:00 PM, after which they prepare for dinner service. The quality of the fish was outstanding, and the freshness really stood out. While the meal is a bit on the pricey side for lunch, the quality and experience make it well worth it. If you're looking for excellent, fresh sushi, Ohshima is definitely worth a visit.

Second visit, and probably the last…read more Our first visit about a year ago was excellent -- good enough that I was happy to return expecting a repeat. This time we left without much desire to come back, and for me it comes down to one thing: how the food tasted. The amuse bouche was an inauspicious start -- small bits of a cooked protein (chicken?) in a standard Japanese onion vinaigrette. The protein was unidentifiable, I didn't finish it, and I'm not sure how it's supposed to set the table for a sushi dinner. Ohshima's strength is supposed to be nigirizushi: small rice, generous fish, with a carefully chosen condiment and/or tare to enhance each piece. That formula worked on the pieces that got tare -- akami and masu were the standouts of the evening. But on the remaining pieces, the itamae misted the fish with what he described as yuzu after construction. Yuzu has a distinct floral-citrus character that's hard to miss; what came through instead was a watery taste that muted the fish's natural flavor. Toro, which should have been a highlight, suffered the most from this. Water is the enemy of flavor, and whatever was in that spray bottle undermined the whole point of the condiment approach. Three of the thirteen pieces were closely related jacks -- hiramase, kampachi, and shima aji -- which bordered on redundant given how similar they are in flavor profile. The gindara was torched aggressively enough to leave a residual propane taste. At $260 for two before tip (including two large Sapporo), I'd also note that the diner's-choice extra piece offered on our first visit wasn't available this time -- a quiet downgrade, though I understand the economics. The technical execution was competent. Nothing was bad in an obvious way. But the watery flavor issue was consistent and consequential enough to make this a shadow of what it was.

Once the whole party was seated & our order was taken, we received our delicious ginger salad and miso soup quickly. When our chef arrived he was ready to put on a show! He was so fun, engaging and very genuine. All of the food was amazing. I got the filet mignon steak w/ fried rice and my husband gets the sumo steak. The filet mignon is definitely worth it but if you prefer more meat, the sumo steak is the way to go. The drinks are affordable and compared to other teppanyaki places, the food is affordable and absolutely worth it. 3.5/5 Stars - Nice Experience, But Some Service and Timing Issues…read more We visited Tabi-Ji Teppanyaki for my husband's birthday and had an overall decent experience, though there were a few things that would make us think twice before returning. We chose the dining room seating rather than the teppanyaki tables. The staff did offer us the teppanyaki experience, but since we don't eat red meat or chicken from certain places and weren't sure how the food preparation process worked with mixed ingredients, we opted for a regular table instead. One downside was the seating arrangement. We were seated away from most of the other guests, and it often felt like the staff forgot we were there. Our original host/server was attentive and friendly, but once they were busy with other tasks, it became difficult to get assistance. It was also not busy for a Tuesday evening. We found ourselves waiting for long periods or having to wave someone down, which wasn't ideal, especially for a birthday dinner. As for the food: * Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll (4/5): Fresh, good quality fish, and a generous portion. A solid sushi roll. * Garlic Edamame (4/5): Flavorful and exactly what you'd expect from a good appetizer. * Lobster Duo with Miso Soup, Salad, and Fried Rice (3/5): Unfortunately, the lobster was quite chewy and seemed overcooked. The miso soup and fried rice were both enjoyable and helped make up for it. * Unagi Donburi (4/5): My husband's meal came with white rice, miso soup, salad, and fried rice. It was his first time trying eel, and he really enjoyed the soft texture and flavor. He said he'd definitely order it again. Our biggest disappointment was the timing of the food. The Unagi Donburi arrived significantly later than everything else. By the time it came out, we had already eaten most of the appetizers and other dishes and were pretty full. It's unfortunate because it seemed like a dish that would have been much better enjoyed fresh, but we ended up taking most of it home. Overall, the food ranged from good to very good, and being able to reserve through Resy and use our Amex dining benefit definitely helped offset the cost. However, considering the price point, we expected more attentive service and better pacing of the meal.
