The rooftop views are very nice but not worth the price tag and food quality. Don't order off the QR code - that's an outdated menu and you're ordering variations of dishes that no longer exist. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and found parking kind of far but didn't mind the small walk down the street. We ordered the tuna ceviche and it was fresh and delicious and I liked the kelp with it! It had sesame seeds and avocado for texture and flavor. The kaiyo roll was unique and a little spicy with the crab, jalapeno, and chili oil. The Lima roll had a unique taste for a shrimp tempura roll and texturally amazing and creamy at the end with avocado. I ordered the crab and scallop roll and it was creamy with the avocado and elevated with the micro greens and had a cracked garlic chip after taste. The fries were delicious and well seasoned and the sauce was unique and addicting. The staff was attentive and the food arrived fast. The ambiance was lively and beautiful during golden hour. Came with a friend to see the views and grab some quick shareable bites!! We got the lima roll, miso black cod, and some drinks! The ambiance was nice, but be aware that there is glass on the side facing the FiDi views so photos taken will have a glare. I enjoyed the low lighting as well as the decorations they had. Definitely a very pretty venue! The service was decent and they were kind enough to take photos of customers! Food summary: Miso black cod 10/10 Very buttery and soft! This place is sooo vibey! It's beautifully decorated with lots of plants and florals. They have a decent amount of space on their rooftop but it books up fast. It's nice for a special occasion but definitely charged the premium for food and drinks to go with the ambience. We shared a bunch of plates for 5 people including the sushi, karaage, beef, corn ribs and yucca fries. It was all delicious but don't think it was enough to fill everyone up. 3rd Rooftop experience for us and grateful. The ambiance was as usual: awaiting for the sunset which is serene, They used bookings in Resy , not thru Opentable or Yelp. We were asked if we wanted to sit facing the sun and that was okay with us. All the food we ordered was great and sumptuous and delicious for a Japanese Peruvian fusion. We had 3 drinks (2 Cobras - just okay) and Prince of Sun (much better). We had 6 plates ranging from 6 oysters (leche de tigre - this is great), Kaiyo rolls, Lomo Saltado rolls, Tuna ceviche, Karaage Chicken Sando, Beef sliders ( this is so juicy) and Ceviche rolls. One downside though is for the host (ess) to not encourage us to pass through the back of the restaurant leading to Hyatt Place hotel where bathroom is not accessible and it's opposite to the parking we went.. We also ordered the yucca fries, harvest salad, miso black cod, and the ceviche roll. The fries were perfect and were accompanied by a fantastic dipping sauce. The harvest salad was SO good and is really a must order appetizer, the flavors of the dressing and all the ingredients together were amazing. The miso black cod literally melts in your mouth, and the flavoring of the broth it comes in is wonderful. The ceviche roll was something I had never tried before but it was incredible, and I'm now a huge fan of ceviche rolls! I really like Japanese-Peruvian (Nikkei) cuisine and when I saw that Kaiyo was opening up a new restaurant in SOMA, I knew I had to give them a visit. My friend and I had Sunday dinner there on their first week. Our server recommended that we try the Nikkei Nigiri set since it's our first time. Her sales pitch was "it's a great way to taste what they are trying to do here". We were sold so we ordered that plus the Miso Black Cod, Octopus, Matcha Fettuccine, Lomo Saltado, Eggplant and Japanese Tea custard. It's our own little tasting menu. The Nikkei Nigiri Set was fantastic - it had very unique pieces, including pisco cured pollo, chutoro tiradito, misoyaki salmon ceviche, ebi with Uni and lomo. It's East meets South America fusion done right. The second course was the cod and the octopus. Both were good but a tad on the salty side (there are also better preparations of cod in other restaurants). The third course was the matcha fettuccine and that was fabulous. I've never had matcha pasta before and it really worked with the mushrooms and beans in the dish. For our main course, we had the lomo saltado (because it's a signature dish that you are almost obligated to try) and the eggplant. The lomo was good but that eggplant really stole the show. They only had one dessert and it was a good one - the custard was not too sweet and was a great way to finish that meal. Service was very attentive but not fussy. I love the space - it was smaller than I thought but the space felt relaxed to me. The music was also good. With tax and tip, this was around $125 per person, which is really good value for what we had. This is a great addition to the city's growing list of Nikkei restaurants. Located on the rooftop of Hyatt Place, the entrance is on Townsend St. Beautiful rooftop and views especially on a rare hot summer day in SF (high 70 degrees). Came after work for drinks with a friend - the drinks were decent but a hefty $18 per drink. We also ordered the chicken katsu sando and the papas fritas. Both were very tasty and the papas fritas was a really big portion for the price. Service was okay; it was a little hard to track down a waiter for us to order a second round of drinks. Note that this place charges a 4% SF fee on both the subtotal and the sales tax - not a fan of this because it's sneaky, and if a business is going to charge this fee I don't think it should be charging it on the sales tax too... It's a nice place to come on a warm day, but a bit overpriced for the food/drinks and service. read more

The food was brought out at different times, which is good, but also bad because the servers brought them but didn't let us know if everything was out yet. So mid-way through the service, we thought everything was out when they asked us if everything was good. So we ended up ordering double for some items that haven't been delivered yet. To be fair, we should have asked, and they could have checked for us. Another point is to bundle up warmly as this is a rooftop seating. I didn't know we would be at the rooftop as my friend just said the restaurant name (not Kaiyo rooftop). Most of us ended up getting super cold as it got closer to the evening. There were heatlamps, but none in our location. For those who drive - street parking or the garage is the way to go here. Highlights of memorable food: Ceviche roll (sorry didn't take a picture of this) Bluefin tuna roll Kaarage The Lomo Saltado roll was also good, but it gets salty after more than 1-2 bites. I originally made a reservation for 2 at 7p on 4/15 for a late Valentines dinner and we were fortunate enough to have our reservation changed to 6:30p when we called an hour prior! The sun had just set which allowed for a very dim and romantic ambiance that's just perfect for date night. The very first thing I noticed was that there were heaters above every table providing a comfy and warm dining experience, and also a huge projector screen that was live-streaming the NBA all star game. Food: my boyfriend and I ordered 3 things to share: the Chicken Katsu Sando, the Yucca Fries, and the Nikkei Wings. The star of the show was definitely the chicken sando! The chicken was so juicy and tender, the milk bread was really soft, and I loved how it was accompanied by a salad with a lightweight dressing (I'm not the biggest fan of strong tasting dressings). The yucca fries were good as well, however I did have a couple of pieces that were slightly undercooked and hard. I definitely had better yucca fries elsewhere. & the wings were just.. okay. I was slightly disappointed because the overall seasoning and taste of them were great, however the meat itself was SO dry. It was surprising because the chicken in the chicken sando was amazing but the wings just fell short. I had to lather them in the aioli sauce provided in order to enjoy it. On the other hand, the drinks we ordered were delicious! We also ordered shots on the side that were pretty pricey ($16 each shot) but the bartender was pretty heavy handed on the pours so at the end of the day, it was worth the money. Service: service was alright! We were told we would get a refill for our water bottle however the water bottle never made it back to our table. & we also never received any spoons for our dessert until almost 10 minutes later when our server came to check in on us. When all the other small bites arrived, we never received a check in from our server either. Parking: parking was easy! There is a parking lot located a block away that is connected to the nearby Safeway. It is a little pricey ($5 for every 30 mins) but it's San Francisco.. what do you expect lol Overall, I would definitely come back for another date night. The karage was excellent--super tender yet crispy, and the spicy mayo was delectable. However, the ceviche was a bit underwhelming; it could use more citrus to balance its umami flavor. Ceviche should have a fresh, acidic bite. The oysters were incredibly fresh, but the cream sauce they were served with was a bit odd and detracted from their freshness. The standout dish for lunch was the katsu Sando--very crispy and tender with a well-marinated flavor. The bread used was a perfect complement to the dish. On the downside, the music was a bit loud, and the seating arrangement was awkward. Larger parties (5+) are seated in an L-shape, sharing two low, round "tables," which can make it difficult to eat comfortably. I would suggest the owners replace these tables with higher ones and replace the bench-style seats with actual chairs surrounding the tables. While the relaxed environment is nice, it's hard to fully enjoy the food when you're constantly reaching down for table space. Additionally, shade would be beneficial as it can get very hot and sunny. An awning over the seating areas would greatly enhance the dining experience. read more

Went with my friend Ji and several girlfriends to this SF hotspot last night to dine at their first floor restaurant and have drinks at their phenomenal rooftop bar. The service was amazing and they really took care of our group of 6 ladies/moms for our night out. I saw many other groups celebrating together here and having a fantastic time over excellent food and drinks. We stuck to seafood on the menu, with the exception of the Brussels sprouts and mushroom medley appetizers which were both seasoned really well cooked perfectly. The tangy lime cream sauce that came with the Brussels sprouts was also really good. We had champagne, oysters, & aged bluefin tuna nigiri that melted in our mouths (off menu from the management, thank you!). The food was superb and I really loved how they blended Japanese with Peruvian flavors as these are two of my favorite cuisines. The hamachi tiradito with grapefruit slices and ikura was bright and yet creamy. The whole branzino fish was a clear winner as well, served with seaweed, edamame, Peruvian corn, and tomatoes and cilantro. The miso cod was among the best I've ever tasted and it reminded us of sea bass - the dashi broth was so savory we wanted to drink it like soup! The uni scallop udon was creamy and had the right amount of umami to it. The scallops were cooked just right and were tender and so fresh. The Japanese tea caramel flan dessert was the perfect way to celebrate our friend's birthday and perfectly creamy and not too sweet. Some in our party don't usually like flan and commented that this dessert was really good because it wasn't too creamy or sweet like some flan desserts can be. Nice end to the meal! I've been sick for several days and this was my first non liquid meal and I appreciated how delicate the flavors were and the interplay between them after having soup and Powerade for a week. The staff were superb and so friendly and accommodating. We ordered tea and a bottle of wine and they asked and brought out honey and lemon wedges for our tea and ice for the wine. The ambiance is top notch and we commented throughout our meal how much effort and thought went into the decor inside. The holiday trimmings and decorations were a special touch. The bathrooms both at the restaurant and the rooftop have spectacular wallpaper which stands out. We went up to the rooftop for drinks after and I can see why this is such a hotspot! Heat lamps everywhere and a live DJ playing some throwback mixed beats. Nice views of the city and Bay Bridge, comfortable seating and my friends liked their drinks. Will definitely be back with the hubs for a date night next time we can cut loose from the little ones. Amazing spot down the street from the Oracle Park. It is a great option to have great food and drinks before the game! All the food for brunch was incredible, and my favorite dish was the French Toast. It was fluffy and filled with custard. It can be a bit rich, however if you like sweetness then this is the dish you want to try. The ceviche trio was awesome too. The tiger milk is something you can dip the ceviche into. I made the mistake of just drinking it, and it was tarty and bitter. Not a great taste by itself, but incredible with the fish. The ceviche trio doesn't come with chips, so I would reccomend also ordering a side of chips with it. read more

It was a sunny but windy day so although it was cold, we had a spectacular view of the city! Service: 3/5 It was whatever. Our waitress only came by to take our orders and give our checks and she was nowhere to be seen in between. Drinks: 3/5 All of us got different cocktails to try and there was very little alcohol in each-- almost nonexistent. I LOVE the ambience here! It feels like you're more in NYC than SF. The green screen is a nice little touch that is unique. The heaters are perfect for the chilly nights, and there's plenty of seating but I recommend coming early on weekends as it gets packed. 2 stars because the aji de gallina mac and cheese was delicious. i really like how innovative kaiyo is with peruvian fusion, and we were seated immediately with no wait. unfortunately, the service was really bad after that. the dining area was pretty empty, but we still waited about 20 minutes for a menu and had to ask for service before anyone helped us. after that, it got tiring having to get up whenever we wanted to order food or drinks because no one checked on our table. the only time our waiter came by was to give us the check. when i gave feedback about the service, he told me "don't yell at me" and "calm down," even though i was not raising my voice or acting angry. me, my partner, and even the table next to us were confused. the table next to us even commented that the waiter was rude and apologized because they could tell that whole interaction was ruining our night. what made it worse was seeing that same table receive normal service, with their server checking in, bringing menus, taking orders, and asking how the food was. for $30 plates, i expected much better. overall, the food was great, but the service made it a really upsetting experience. i hope that waiter has better days and does not treat others like this. we won't be returning. read more

Getting to Kaiyo Rooftop was a little confusing for us. On Google maps it shows us the corner restaurant, but you actually have to go into the hotel, talk to the person on the right podium and then they'll take you to the rooftop. The staff in the corner of the restaurant helped guide us, so it wasn't like we were searching on our own. The one thing I disliked was the fact that one elevator took us to the rooftop out of all four, so if the other ones opened we would have to sit and wait for the correct one to be ready to take us up. The service itself was fairly fast because we went during a time where it wasn't too busy. I ordered a dragon roll with a grapefruit mimosa, and my boyfriend ordered the chicken katsu sando with a pineapple mimosa. My roll was really good, i definitely would get it again because the unagi mixed with the fried tempura inside was delicious. I was able to try my boyfriend's sandwich, and although the katsu's crispiness was nice, I thought it was fairly on the dryer side and the slaw wasn't enough to make up for it. However, the CEVICHE PLATTER WAS OUR FAVORITE! We definitely favored the shrimp and tuna over the classic, but all of it was so good. The large chips on the side cost us extra though, they DO NOT come with the ceviche. read more

I booked a table at Kaiyo SF for my husband's 40th birthday a month in advance--literally the day reservations opened. I specifically called to make sure we'd have a rooftop table for this special celebration. Then, just 1.5 days before our reservation, I received a call saying they couldn't seat us on the rooftop at our chosen time. The only options were to move our dinner to 8:30 PM (much later than planned) or keep the 7 PM reservation downstairs, and we could go to the rooftop only at 10 PM--three hours after our original dinner time--just to "take pictures." I was extremely disappointed, but since it was too late to find another nice restaurant with a view, I felt forced to keep the reservation. They assured me the dining room downstairs was "bigger and nicer," but in reality, it was a small, enclosed room with two long tables for two large groups (ours and another party of six). It honestly felt like dining in a closet--no atmosphere, no views, no special vibe at all. I chose Kaiyo for the experience, ambiance, and rooftop view, not just for food. If I had wanted a regular dinner, I could have easily picked a great restaurant closer to home and saved my friends the 45-minute drive to the city. The only good part was that they offered one round of cocktails for free, and our server was genuinely kind and attentive. But in the end, I paid $670 (including the mandatory 20% gratuity) for food that was okay--not bad, but far from memorable--and an experience that felt completely underwhelming. Unfortunately, I can't recommend Kaiyo SF. If you're booking for a special occasion and expect the rooftop experience, don't count on them to honor it. read more

What really stood out was how much more attentive and personable she was compared to who I assumed was the manager. Liz created an atmosphere that felt inviting and comfortable, and you can tell she truly cares about the guest experience. It's a wonderful spot to go for date night or just catching up with friends. Sometimes depending on your seating and the greenery of the rooftop it may be hard to see the views of the city but otherwise the vibes are immaculate and drinks are delicious. Upbeat music in the back, beautiful views of the city, a nice bar, and plenty of seating throughout the rooftop. Service was great, all employees of the establishment were kind and helpful. I'd say the ambiance/vibe/service are all strong points at Kaiyo Rooftop. The best way I can describe the food is "good/decent". We ordered many things - beef empanadas, Japanese crispy shrimp, fries, a lomo saltado roll, and a spicy tuna roll. The beef empanadas and Japanese crispy shrimp were both good, but needed something to elevate the dish. Both fell slightly flat? The fries were delicious! The spicy tuna roll was fresh, no complaints. Finally, the lomo saltado roll was interesting - it was our first time having an angus sushi roll. Cool to try, but wouldn't order over another fish roll again. The drinks were yummy, but very sweet! All around, fun experience but I'd definitely look to try other similar establishments in the city before circling back around. read more
