This place has such a nice calm local feel- I love the ambience. I've come here for breakfast during the week and really enjoyed my meal and experience. The service is also very good, the waitresses are very attentive and keep your coffee filled and warm. The reason I didn't give it more starts is due to the quality of the food- it's good, but not gourmet. It is what is to be expected from a dinner. But, given all the new fantastic options in town. You might want to try the Japanese style breakfast, since I'm not local I'm not used to having fish for breakfast but the bento style breakfast was very good and filling. read more

I will explain my 3 star rating very clearly. 5 stars - 1 deducted for rude service, which gradually became better as it became closer to 'tip time". 1 star deducted for the price and lack of broth, meat, and other soup ingredients. 3 stars are because the food was good enough, and we were able to park and get seated pretty quickly. I was addicted to this place when I was pregnant and I got the same thing every time lol. I love their oxtail ramen, it's delicious and only $10. It tastes great as take out too, but if you can I'd recommend eating in, it just tastes better. I was a sucker for their desserts too, they have an awesome pyramid cheesecake. Having a cold sucks! Being sick while traveling sucks! Now that I've vented, I'm in Hawaii after all... My long time local friends invited me to lunch and chose this restaurant... wait, where's the bowling alley?! They gave me a little history on the reopening of this familiar place to natives who grew up on the island in the '50's to '70's here. Heck, even I heard about their famed ox tail soup. That would have been my order, but, given my cold and Chinese traditional medicine theories, I could not have this if there are peanuts in it which worried me. When my other local friends learned of where I was dining, they mentioned hearing that their beef stew was "pretty good". The restaurant was about half full on a Tuesday around noon with an assortment of the local work lunch crowd which included delivery drivers and retail staff. My palate these days have leaned more towards comfort food meals like this. Given how food prices have increased especially the new restaurants in or around Waikiki, one is better off dining at local places these days. This was my first experience lunching here so of course I had to try their Ox tail soup which is supposedly one of the best. I go the small portion which came with four chunks, perfect for my smaller appetite. Yum it was really tasty! The only downside it that there was too much fat for me. Yeah I know, a lot of people love the fat, but too much is a no for me. The restroom was fairly clean except the tile floors were totally sticky! The loud music, friendly service, and good food. We were seated pretty fast, despite it being lunch time. Last time I was here, I got the Korean Chicken, which I didn't like. But think time, there was something telling me to get the tonkotsu. It actually wasn't that bad. For about $12.00, there was a lot of tender tonkotsu over lettuce and it came with a side salad. Our waitress was super friendly and always followed up on if we needed anything. The tonkotsu had this nice crunch on the outside and the meat was tender. Not melt in your mouth kind, but it was pretty legit for a restaurant in kalihi. I asked the lady for tonkotsu sauce, but didn't realize it was in front of my face. Today I went to work but was still very congested. I decided to try Kam Bowl and drink one of their soup dishes. Kam Bowl is known for their ox tail soup when they served it at the Kam Bowling alley years back. After looking at the menu, I decided to get their Kalua soup. I like ox tail, but I do not like all the bones and knuckles in it. The Kalua soup was served with 2 scoops of white rice. When I tasted it, I was amazed on the flavor. The flavor is like drinking kalua pig! It has a nice smokey pork flavor and came with a generous portions of pork pieces that was very soft. Of course I used the ginger and soy sauce to compliment the dish. It was so refreshing, I drank it up to the last drop and even put my remaining rice in the soup. This really helped my cold and I was very satisfied and stuffed after. I recommend the Kalua soup for those who want a refreshing soup to drink if you are not feeling like ox tail. I used to eat at Kam Bowl when it was at the bowling alley but the Kenny's location had a good Chinese Chicken Salad but my eating at Kenny's had been even longer than the last time I ate at Kam Bowl. Now, granted that it was noonish and the shades were partially down, it might have seemed dark or outdated, but it still was looking like the old Kenny's that I had great memories on. The ceiling fans and A/C provided ample air circulation, which was neither freezing to my wife or stuffy. The furnishing was reassuring and old homey diner feeling, with the faces of aunties & uncles all enjoying their comfort meals chatting away with each other & staff. My wife ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad with dressing on the side, which was the familiar taste that she remembered and enjoyed. My reviewing the menu selection, I saw the infamous Kam Bowl Oxtail Tail Soup, with small, large and dine-in only extra large, which I was ono for but I knew I had too many other errands that day, that leftovers sitting in the car might not be a good idea. I selected a small meal selection of Lup Cheong Fried Rice with fried egg. It was delicious and even a small was pretty satisfying, that I still took home leftovers for breakfast. Service was friendly, helpful and fast that I didn't need to ask for a container before the staff brought one over. I was satisfied. I'm only disappointed that I didn't have the Oxtail soup or buy one for take home, although, I was curious about one of the mainstays of the old Kam Bowl was the jar of shredded Ginger, which it was one of the toppers at Kam Bowl. My friends & wife would scoop a couple of spoonsful of the grated ginger & juice into their sauce bowl with soy & a dash(s) of Tabasco sauce, mix it and dip their pieces of hot Oxtail into the sauce dish, shredded it and eating the sauce drenched meat with a little rice, then slurping a spoon of that tasty broth. I had never eaten Oxtail Soup until mid-adulthood when my work buddies would eat there fair often, so it a favorite with my work buddies and when I took my girlfriend, later wife, she enjoyed it as well. I loved their Oxtail broth, with green onions, Chinese Parsley and Ginger mixture. When the bowl started to empty, I'd pour the remaining ginger, soy and Tabasco sauce into the Oxtail soup remains with the rice, mixing and savoring the rich broth, meat, rice and sauce, like a rice jook. Don't order the chicken Katsu. My daughter said Chicken was burnt and it and had no flavor, and even the rice was tasted like it was not washed and was hard like bullets. I want to give no stars for that plate. We threw the whole plate out, unedible. She re-ordered a grilled cheese and and fries for my grandson and her those were excellent. The oxtail here is really delicious and fully loaded! It doesn't have that overwhelming anise flavor that some places do or the overkill in peanuts. Just awesome rich broth and loaded with oxtails! I love the little bones...the meat just falls off and all that yummy sticky gelatin is juicy and soft. Hmmm...so good! The wait staff is SUPER nice and always thinking of families. I really really appreciate them! Service is super fast especially when you have an antsy 2 year old going crazy waiting for food. :). Went to dinner here with friends. Ordered the Oyakodon. Saddest oyakodon I've ever seen. The egg was clearly not scrambled. It looked like they fried an egg and the yolk broke in the process which resulted in a broken egg cooked over hard. Then they just threw it into the mix, whole and in tact. The only reason why they got two stars instead of one is because the server was decent and the sauce was good. My friend had the chopped steak. I tasted a piece and it was ono. Great Service! The menu has lots of options, which is great. Ono local food! The restaurant seems very clean with comfortable seating. The bathroom was clean however they don't have paper towels :( just an extremely old blow dryer that doesn't have much life left to it. The Green Salad that came with the meal (versus Macaroni Salad) was perfectly fresh and nicely done. It had great slivers of carrots and shredded red cabbage. My husband enjoyed his Teri Beef Plate and the Lup Cheong Fried Rice was super tasty. I can't believe how good their coffee is!!! I was totally impressed with it. Our Server was great! She was always there to refill our beverages or clean dirty plates and to ask how we were doing. There are (3) different Ice Cream Cakes. We tried the Mauna Kea. It was good. This place used to be Kenny's restaurant! Now, it's called Kam Bowl. Today, 1/27/2016 is the soft opening and it looks pretty good! Kam Bowl feels like Yum Yum Tree restaurant back in the 1990's in Kahala or Wailana Coffee House in Waikiki. Or even Zippy's in a better atmosphere too. It's a restaurant cafe that is aesthetically pleasing and the ambiance is quite nice. The restaurant itself is clean and carpeted for your own convenience. They even have seating up against the kitchen, so sort of like a bar feeling, but in a homespun restaurant cafe. The air condition, or lack thereof, really isn't working at the time, but it was warm regardless. They have two private seating for parities and special occasions. I wondered if they would open it up for the general audience to crank up more sales? The service here can be a little better, but I understand the grand opening and "getting the bugs out" feel. The overall experience was decently just okay. Could have been better. Now that I think about it, this place does feel like an upgraded Zippy's restaurant. While the decor was a definite change of pace, the portions of the food were decent, although expecting a larger size. I get that they are a new business, so it's okay. The prices are kind of up there, but as aforementioned, they are a new business, so it's all good. Their signature Ox tail soup (large) is $14.95, served with 2 scoops of white rice, whereas the small version is $12.95 served with one scoop rice. Kam Bowl restaurant is the former Kenny's restaurant at the Kamehameha Shopping Center in the heart of Kalihi at 1620 North School Street. Kam Bowl restaurant accepts major credit cards, but not American Express, which is good enough for me. The parking situation is good, since they're in the Kamehameha shopping center, so you'll have plenty of options here for lunch and dessert at Starbucks and or Baskin Robbins afterwards! For me and my co-worker, both of us who love Pho, we opted to come here to check things out and see how this place is. We both haven't had Ox tail soup in a long while, so this place hit the spot for taste and nostalgia purposes. My co-worker had the large order of Ox tail soup with white rice, whereas I had the oxtail ramen, which was priced at $10.95. I thought that the portions was decent enough. I also ordered a Diet Coke, which was served in a red Coca Cola glass. The taste was as good as I remembered having Ox Tail back in my college days. The ramen was good and the soup was delicious. Too bad that the portion size was not as adequate as I thought it would be, but, it made it full, so that's important. This place has gotten some rather low reviews since they opened early last year, but today I guess I didn't have the same bad experience as other customers. My father and I arrived a little after noon and we were seated within a couple of minutes. The waitress was very quick in bringing our waters and immediately took our orders - Regular size oxtail soup and substituted the white rice for fried rice (extra $3 i believe). We waited no more than 2-3 minutes before our order came. I guess they have a huge pot of the oxtail and huge pan of fried rice ready to go. I was surprised at how fast the food came despite being pretty busy. The oxtail soup was very delicious (not too bland, not too salty/star anise'y) and the meat was fall-off-the-bone tender. The fried rice was good too, maybe could use just a bit more seasoning, but the oxtail soup with the shoyu and ginger was flavorful enough so the rice complimented it just fine. Staff was very attentive, checked up on us 2-3 times to refill our waters. All in all, we had a good experience here. I'd definitely be back and hopefully have the same positive experience. A couple reasons why I give 4 stars instead of 5. My dad had quite a bit of small bone fragments in his soup, so he had to be a bit more careful when eating it. I only had maybe 1 small piece of bone fragment i felt in my mouth. Also, like other reviewers mentioned, the soup portions here are on the smaller side. A regular size bowl here might qualify for small size at other restaurants. So just go for the regular size, i wouldn't even bother to order the small size. Kinda like a Zippy's meets Liliha Bakery... We were seated quickly but note that there is a sign in sheet by the cashier, no sign to sign in, but there is. Here's where the fun begins: THE MENU: It's heavy & has multiple sheets inside like a book, BUT the menu is only the front cover? Go figure?! I was like uhhhh okay? FOOD: The FAMOUS OXTAIL- SMALL: It's almost as small as a portion or miso soup! Kidding it's very small for $12 though. LARGE: It's just a bigger bowl with one extra meat for $14! It's very good! Not too heavy and right amount of taste. There's less veggies if you are comparing to Zippy's and there's a big amount of grated ginger that is on each table. KIMCHEE FRIED RICE: BROKE THE MOUTH! I wish I had ordered this instead, I really did! It was so good! REGULAR FRIED RICE: You should get the KIMCHEE, it's pretty much the same taste. Overall, the service was good. To say I was disappointed would be an Understatement. Basically, 4 out of 5 meals was a bust and the 5th one was just "ok". Being an oxtail soup eater since the days of toppling bowling pins I was looking forward to a repeat of those good old days... I was sadly mistaken... First of all, was the look of the restaurant. Just brown. Brown like everything was almost the same color and it didn't feel like a place to eat. A comment was "It didn't feel inviting", sums it up. Second, the wait help gave this place the one star. She came back to ask several times if we needed anything and tried her best to try and help us even if visually she looked frustrated assumingly due to her dealings with the cooks. Third, food should not come to the table with the temperature of food that was sitting out on the counter for a while. Oxtail soup was actually cool, which is defiantly a huge problem. I sent mine back and it came back Luke warm at best. Another table sent theirs back 3 times to get it "hot" which to me is terrible. We could hear the cook say "it's boiling hot", it definately was NOT. Something is wrong with the temperature control cause the beef stew came out warm room temperature too. The gravy came out "warm". All around not a good temperature of the food. At least the flavor of the soup was good but there wasn't any rave reviews of the other meals. Lastly, small portions. The Regular oxtail soup was like a small saimin bowl with about 5-6 oxtail that was mostly bones for 15 bucks. I wonder what the small was like? Less than that would be strange. The beef in the stew was fatty so mostly inedible with one hard carrot and one potato. Not enough food for sure. Overall a "not good" experience. Very disappointing. They opened in Kam Shopping Center in the old Kenny's spot. Parking can sometimes be tough at peak times in that shopping center. My first time didn't start out great, Yelp and other places said they were open til 10pm on Friday. However, we came at 9pm on a Friday and they were closed. We came back on a different Friday earlier to give them a try. They still have that old diner-like feel. You know which one I mean, like Likelike Drive Inn. There's counter top and booth style seating. The menu is small and has limited selections. Of course, I got a small oxtail soup for $12.95. Each table is equipped with a container of finely minced ginger. People have said it's reasonable but I thought it was a little expensive considering 4 my oxtail pieces weren't too meaty. The soup came with 2 scoops of rice. The flavor was ok but not as great as I expected since everyone has said its the best in Hawaii. I also didn't like biting into the star anise pieces in the soup. I explained to my husband that it was known for their oxtail soup, 'back in the day.' We weren't feeling 'oxtail soup-ish' this weekend. Even though the decor and music were modern, (local music), the 'feel' of the place reminded me of my Grandma and older aunts and uncles. I don't know why...it just did. And I like feeling nostalgic. The waitress was efficient, friendly, and informative. Our food arrived quickly and we were happy about that! I looked around to see what other people ordered. Many had the oxtail. I also saw the fried rice which looked good too. But I was ready for some shortribs! It came smothered in what looked like stew gravy. I didn't expect that. Maybe I didn't read the description well. It was very bland and I actually had to add salt. The rib itself was a bit chewy. It was just ok. I won't order it again. It came with a side of mac (not great) and rice. My husband is a big eater so he had 2 plates. He started with the teri beef sandwich. He LOVED it! It was huge and looked delicious. The fries were delicious and cooked to perfection! He also ordered the pork cutlet. It looked sooo good. It came smothered in brown gravy. It also lacked seasoning/salt. I thought it was ok. My husband didn't think too highly of it. 5 stars for the Oxtail Soup! 3 star for never updating the interior & 1 star for never having the AC on/notworking/barely working.. who wants to eat hot soup in the heat? Not me! On e i experienced the AC issue more than one time- 5 times to be exact, I stopped going. If I wanted oxtail- i just order to go. Everything else on their menu is just OK or below average. read more

I haven't had Kam Bowl's oxtail soup in years so when they opened at the former Kenny's Restaurant I wanted to try it. My husband and I both ordered large oxtail soup and when it came we were both disappointed to say the least. The portion size was nothing I expected. The large oxtail which was $15 was more like a small, even a large bowl of pho was bigger than what we had. I wonder what the small oxtail looked like. The oxtail was more fatty than meaty. I spent more time removing the fat than eating. Lastly, we were served rice which was mixed with hard, dried, inedible rice. Although the the flavor was there, it's not worth the price. I suggest looking elsewhere for oxtail soup. read more

It's actually not bad here. I came with a party, thinking that it would be underwhelming from some of the other reviews. There is a slight smell like others have mentioned, but it's not super strong. The restaurant is clean enough. The waitress was nice and accommodating to the grandparents in our group. She was also pretty efficient too, considering we had a pretty big party all getting different things. The oxtail soup was good, and the kimchee fried rice was a pretty good size for the price too. I may not go out of my way to come here, but if I'm looking for a reasonably priced decent food, I'd come here again. Parking was a bit challenging when we went but we parked upstairs and there was plenty of space. read more

I haven't been to Kam Bowl for almost thirty years, so long ago that I can't even tell you what I had. The place looks pretty much the same though (at least as far as I remember). I really wanted oxtail soup before I went back to the mainland and Kam Bowl has a reputation for having the best oxtail soup. We came for dinner on a Tuesday, which is SENIOR CITIZEN DAY (my parents were so excited). The discount only applies to whatever dishes the said senior citizens had and not to the whole meal. I digress. We got seated. The seats and table were a bit dirty; not outrageously unsanitary but the table was sticky and smelled like ketchup and there were crumbs all over the booth seats. The place was relatively crowded and our orders got taken really quickly. The first things out were the oxtail soup. My only request for an oxtail soup restaurant was to have "unlimited ginger". Something about eating ginger + shoyu + rice + oxtail soup broth is the best. I generally try to stay away from carbs (generally, but lets be honest, in Hawaii, its difficult) but was willing to make an exception here. The oxtail was tender and fell off the bones. The soup was tasty. Everything was delicious. Daddy had french dip sandwich (he claims its the best) and Brother had fried garlic rice (it was super garlicky). Food came out fast. Food was delicious. Place was a bit dirty but easy to overlook with all the tasty dishes. Can't wait to come back again and maybe make it a going-back-to-the-mainland tradition. read more
