Karizma is a laid back hookah lounge that has a feel as if you're traveling abroad. There's a bar downstairs & some seating & upstairs with more seating. This is a fairly spacious hookah lounge. The music is at the right tone with early 2000's playlist in the background. My party had ordered hookah, which was smooth & they changed the coal every so often which I appreciate. We had some mixed drinks which was also good. I tried their shawarma chicken wrap & that was tasty too. I wish there was a little more sauce on it so I could've got it with every bite, but it was still fine. Someone else in my party had nachos & a burger with fries. I had fries too & could tell it was freshly made. I don't do hookah as often as I use to, however I enjoy finding cool, laid back places & if they happen to have hookah, even better! read more

This place is a rip off. $18 for a G&T, PLUS they hand you the digital bill as if they didn't already add the 20% gratuity into it so you're tricked into tipping on top of the tip. I wish i could rate this place with zero stars. First off we had a reservation on Saturday night which the location confirmed. When we arrived they made us wait 20 minutes outside stating " they are over booked". The security outside had a bad attitude and was unwelcoming. After waiting 20 minutes after our reservation time in the cold weather outside they took us inside to a small little table in a corner by the stairs and not an actual table. The told us the seating was temporary until they could get us a table. When we asked management if we were going to be moved to an actual table they had attitude again and stated " there are larger parties who need to be seated first" this was very unprofessional and rude. The good times did no stop there, the waitress informed up there is a one drink minimum per person to be able to sit at a table which was not disclosed to us beforehand and anywhere on the website. After about an hour of still sitting in a small table in the corner the waitress came up to us and asked us if we would like the cash out the bill because there is a "90 minute max" for each table. This was never mentioned to us before as well which is very rude again. The hookah was disgusting and service was very bad. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

got there at 11:17 and the waitress tells us it's a 90 minute seating limit and i had no problem with that. Then at 11:45 she comes back up to the table with the bill telling us it's been 2 hours and we have to go. they she added someone elses water to our tab and the hookah was terrible. they just want to get your money and kick you out. and it's a shame because it wasn't like this before. i suggest going elsewhere read more

I love the atmosphere and decor but the service wasn't attentive and I found the drinks to be very overpriced. A margarita was like $23 which I'd expect at a rooftop bar but not at a hookah bar/restaurant. The drink wasn't bad though it could have been spicier. Big fan of the velvet booths. Amazing happy hour specials on food, drinks and hookah. Hookahs are strong and long lasting, they have three Deezer ice pipe, and they continuously change the coals. Ellie was an amazing server, always checking to make sure everything is well, and very hospitable. Will definitely bring friends back. Ambiance is chill and calm settings. Music on point. Good spot to come alone, with a date or group outing. One of the best hookah spots in the city. read more

First reason of complaint and I'll get right down to it. The only reason we came Here was for hooka. Huge disappointment. We ordered watermelon mint and strawberry gum. Both taste like crushed tea leaves. After 3 attempts of changing the flavors. We just gave up and asked for the check. They charged us for a bottle of wine when we only ordered 2 glasses. They finally fixed that issue .... They also add gratuity. So if you come here the food is great, service is great once they get to you. They were very helpful changing the flavors for us but it's not their fault that the tobacco may be old? I'm not sure what is happening. But none of it has any flavor. :( sad because we would have paid more if it was what was being advertised. My partner and I just finished celebrating our wedding and had friends from the Middle East visiting and they were not impressed by the flavor.... A little embarrassing. Btw. Just look over your bill before paying. They added an extra 30 for a bottle of wine when we only ordered 2 glasses. They fixed the issue. But this can be easily overlooked.... The gratuity would have been higher for their effort but since they tried to get us twice with up charges, we kindly paid the bill and had to leave because it was underwhelming to say the least. read more

I loved the decor and atmosphere but that's about it. My previous visit to this place was a year ago and tbh the experience was much better, this is why I decided to come back in the first place. I was very disappointed with the hookah because it immediately began to taste bitter, the hookah guy never came up to us and changed the coals. The food was tasteless, service below average. But the most important thing is that they include tips in the bill without letting their customers know, even if it is a group of less than 5-6 people which is extremely rare. When I noticed that I double tipped, I asked the waitress to remove the second extra part of the tip, but she said that she could not do that and basically did not want to give me a refund. She helped me out eventually but overall experience was so-so, Won't come here again. read more

Wrong Place, Wrong Time My partner picked this place, thinking it was a restaurant. They turned out to be a hookah bar and possibly something else. When you walk in, downstairs, it looks like you are entering some kind of go-go club. The waitresses are scantily dressed, and there is a strong stench of hookah, etc., everywhere. We went upstairs to order a mixed variety. of platters. Then we were made to wait well over an hour for service for very uneven food. We will definitely not be back!!! read more

Came here a Friday night with my man we were coming from Johnny Utah and didn't want to go home yet. Place has a dark decor, we were greeted & seated quickly. We only stated for an hour and enjoyed the hookah. They have some hookah special only for happy hour I guess. The regular hookah is expensive! But everything in New York is smh. I'm giving 3 stars for the ambiance cause this place is so freaking cute, perfect for birthday parties and other events. We went on a slow night which was nice as we basically had the whole place to ourselves. The hookah was underwhelming got too harsh too soon and the flavors weren't my favorite. I got the gummy bare and it felt like i was breathing pure ash. The food was also quite bland which was disappointing but my friends and i still had a good time. read more

I arrived in 2008 with very little, and when Graydon Carter revived the restaurant in 2009, I was beginning a rise of my own, first at a large global bank and then, to my astonishment, at one of the city's most powerful investment firms. The suits were daily, the walls were gold, and the pressure was so consuming that even success could feel like a form of attrition. After a few years, I moved to a smaller firm with Southern roots, where the culture was more humane, the work gave me greater autonomy, and I produced some of the strongest results of my career, even within an industry still governed by fear, greed, and status. Inside, the red booths, low lighting, generous spacing, and hand-painted monkey murals made lunch feel ceremonial without becoming stiff. The room was timeless and handsome, with polished service, quality food, and the subtle assurance of a place where you could be proud to bring someone important. I especially remember sitting in one of those booths with two mentors, each only a few years older than I was and therefore close enough in vintage to feel relatable, trustworthy, and genuinely within reach. One had entered my life after I left the larger firm and helped me understand an earlier chapter that had also ended abruptly and, at the time, felt deeply unfair; the other had guided me through the smaller firm where I finally found a more sustainable way to work. Over that long lunch, I introduced them, we discussed several promising ideas, and for a moment my career seemed to have reached the point where relationships, experience, and opportunity were finally converging. One of those ideas consumed an extraordinary amount of my time and energy, and I believed it might become the foundation of my next chapter. Instead, the arrangement eventually turned on me, the role I thought I had earned never materialized, and the business itself sputtered. My professional life, financial footing, and pride all collapsed just as COVID was beginning. Then Monkey Bar closed in 2020, which made the ending feel almost unnervingly complete: the restaurant, the city, and the version of myself built around New York finance all went dark at once. For years, I experienced that ending as devastating and unfair; now I can see it as wisdom delivered through an unnecessarily rough process. The restaurant's later revival by a Chicago hospitality group feels fitting because it still honors tradition and ceremony while allowing the old forms to evolve into something healthier, looser, and more current. I have not been back since that lunch, but a return now would feel like visiting the museum of my past, not reclaiming a life that asked too much, gave too little, and finally lost its hold on me. Even now, I remember Monkey Bar as a great Midtown lunch in a memorable room, surrounded by the residue of old ambitions and the gratitude of having survived them. The cocktails were sharp, the service was impeccable, and the dining room carried that glamorous old New York energy without feeling trapped by it. The flavor was flawless, and while the portion was small (which was acceptable), the pool of broth accompanying it was completely unnecessary; it was inedibly salty, so what was the point of serving it? After finishing the fish, I was left with a plate full of broth, rendering the plate unusable. Plus, it was overpriced; for this dish, you're better off going to Strip House Strip House remains the undisputed king of this dish in New York. A friend ordered the chicken parmesan. It was just average. Another friend ordered the short rib stroganoff. The flavor was decent, but it was far too rich and heavy. As someone whose palate is split 50/50 between Western and Chinese cuisine, I could manage only five bites at most. If you have a palate that prefers 100% Chinese food, proceed with caution on this dish. Friends ordered sides of mac & cheese and mashed potatoes. These are dishes originally meant for low-income Americans to fill up on cheaply; there's no limit to how good they can be, but also no floor to how bad they can get. Both were on par with the average quality found in upscale restaurants. Honestly, these are two dishes I would never order myself. To sum up: the atmosphere was great. It's also hard to get a reservation; the place was packed when we had lunch at 2 PM. Aside from that monkey bread, I didn't feel like anything else justified the price or offered something you couldn't find elsewhere. I don't quite get the hype. Perhaps I just didn't order the right dishes; maybe next time I'll try the burger and the steak.

I ordered the pretzel which was good. We both also had some beers and cocktails. I had the bees knees which was ok and he had some whiskey I think and we both had a beer. He had the Fraunces tavern option on tap and I had a Narragansett summer one. The bartender seemed fine and nice. Ambiance here is as it is an old tavern it sure has that feeling to it. There are many rooms and dinning options within this tavern. I have only sat at the bar area the times that I have been here.

Although we arrived at 2pm, we were told there was a 40 minute wait, which ended up being around 15-20. We started with the sweet pea hummus dip which was unreal, it was so good. They don't give you a sharp knife, so you kind of have to bite off pieces; but when a piece is grisly you can't tear off a piece and end up with a full piece in your mouth, chewing for many minutes around the grisly center. Everyone knows what this is like and it's to be expected in life, but NOT at a high-end restaurant where you've paid a significant margin above the average meal, and don't even get a full pita. Guys, do some QC and soul-searching - and be generous with pita.

Fish filet with ginger and scallion- nice portion size and a flavorful and clean dish. Braised pork belly- jam packed in flavor and cooked so tender from the meat to the fat. The pan fried noodle- normally a favorite in Chinese restaurants. This didn't hit its marks. There wasn't much noodles. The outer brim wasn't crispy. And it was a lot of sauce. The protein was scarce. And they had more veggies than protein. We were a table of 5 including a 6 year old. And everybody left full. And satisfied.
