I like mine fried hard with the tentacles-- tastes like chicarrones with ajinomoto (msg) which is both terrifying and unfortunately also ingrained in my Filipino taste buds to equate good old home cooking. Lol There's a softer calamari option as well, which is also tasty. Don't forget the dipping sauce-- really makes the dish, especially if you ask for more jalapeños, too. On a Super Bowl Sunday, it is expected that lines will be long to pick up food. Ok I get that. But I called our order in 15 minutes ago and they said it'll be ready in 10 minutes. Now I'm standing at the door and I can hear similar people were told the same thing. Now I'm wondering if they even cooked my order. There is only one line for everything...even those who called their order in supposedly to save time but unfortunately it's not going to happen today. There's only one lady dealing with everyone and having a hard time dealing with irate and upset customers --very long wait and order mix ups. Given that their food is pretty popular and reasonably priced, there should've a system in place when a holiday or a season like this rolls in. Otherwise, they will lose their customers....2 already walked out as I'm standing here writing this review. This is a tiny, strip mall Chinese food place in Union City. They are known for their crispy fried calamari with a side of vinegar sauce. Super delicious! They have a full Chines food menu and their dishes are delicious and large. It's not really a place you eat at, it's more like a take out place. This review is based on two visits. King Calamari just opened early this month (July 2013). I was pretty excited to see that they had the Salt & Pepper Calamari on their menu, aka Crispy Calamari/Squid. So I place an order of the Crispy Calamari and it tasted exactly like the ones they sell at King Chicken Wing in Milpitas (Hmmmm, I wonder is King Calamari is associated with King Chicken Wing?), which is a huge plus because that means I don't have to travel all the way to Milpitas anymore. And what is also cool is that at King Calamari they offer a small container option, which goes for $5.99 instead of $10.99 for a large size. Other items I have tried... The Wor Wonton Soup - it was subpar. This dish had all the elements present (the veggies, wontons, chicken, shrimp, BBQ pork, etc.) a d broth but it was average. The wontons were meek and not that great tasting, and the veggies were weak and tasteless. However, the chicken was tender and the BBQ pork was quite tasty. If you are looking for a great Wor Wonton Soup in the area go to DRAGON HOUSE which is in the Seafood City Shopping Center, just north across the street of King Calamari. COMBINATION SPECIAL #7 This combo meals comes with 2 pieces of Fried Chicken Wing, Sweet & Sour Pork, and Chicken Chow Mein. This meal was also average. The fried chicken wing wasn't OK. It had a crunchy exterior but the flavor wasn't as intense compared to other chinese restaurants that specializes in fried chicken wing. The Chicken Chow Mein also lack intense flavors and taste that I was looking for. And as for the Sweet & Sour Pork, it was neither sweet or sour. And the pork was meager (small) covered in a thick cake-like batter. If you are looking for a great Sweet & Sour Pork dish in the area, go to Hong Kong Restaurant which is in the Pacific Island Shopping Center, just west across the street of King Calamari. Honestly, I was really wanting to like this place because of the Salt & Pepper Calamari, but I think this dish is the only thing going for this place. If the few dishes I had was a sampling of their overall taste and flavor, I don't think I will come back when there are other chinese restaurants in the area who can do it better, in my opinion. And trust me there are plenty of chinese restaurants to choose from within a 5 to 10 mile radius. Here's my overall rundown: THE GOODS: - Salt & Pepper Calamari, that comes in two sizes: small or large!!! THE BADS: - Not open on mondays. - No waiter service. This place is more like a hole-in-the-wall kind of joint where you order at the counter and the food is served "To Go". I saw this new Chinese fast food joint opened not too long ago so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the orange chicken and chicken chow mein. When I saw the orange chicken I couldn't wait to eat it but once I actually tasted it, it was not that great.... The taste of the sauce was good but I was NOT happy that each piece of chicken was super breaded.. some pieces didn't even have chicken and the ones that did it tasted like OLD chicken that had been sitting there for days... I was pretty grossed out. I just ate a couple pieces and just threw it out. I was so disappointed that it was just a waste of money. Now for the chicken chow mein, I liked it :) I liked that it was not all greasy and it had big chunks of chicken. Major difference from the orange chicken o_O The service was good, the girl at the front desk was really nice. It seemed as if the top seller was the fried calamari (people were taking it by the boxes). So, if you want to try this place out and you like calamari, go for it. If not, I don't recommend it... I live nearby and was headed to the place when I got a call 10 minutes before 4PM and was notified my order was ready. I was extremely surprised since some reviews had stated long lines and wait but that was not the case when I went there.. I arrived at 4:10PM and picked up my trays and also ordered a small box of the soft fried calamari.. Everyone at the party raved about the salted pepper spareribs and the calamari! Of course not everyone arrived at the same time at the party so I had to reheat them up and it was just as good as fresh.. The show mein and beef broccoli were ok. The fried rice was too dry for my taste so I would likely not order this again.. We had a potluck party and one of our friend brought this. When I took the first bite, I was in heaven right away. Then I couldn't stop eating it again and again. First of all I love calamari. This was my third time coming to this establishment and I always order the calamari and it comes out fresh and hot. This time today I go in and I order the calamari and the lady behind the counter says I have one already made that someone didn't get I can give you that one so you won't have to wait. I said that's fine. I proceed about three businesses down from there to Subway to buy my two daughters a Subway sandwich, at this time I decided to open the calamari and eat a few pieces. when I opened it the calamari was cold and had a pretty noticeable fishy smell. That's probably why they put a lot of raw jalapeno slices on the top of the calamari so I wouldn't be able to smell it at first. I then proceeded back inside to tell the lady this calamari is cold (and I didn't even tell her that I didn't like the smell.) I reminded her that she told me that the order was just cooked and I expected it to be hot. Then she proceeds to tell me that the crispy calamari is pre-cooked and it's just sitting back there waiting to be served. where has the soft calamari is cooked to order and comes hot. I then told her I have always had to wait for my calamari to be cooked when I came in to order it and I want hot calamari. So after some back-and-forth I then proceeded to tell her look you keep trying to explain to me that the crispy calamari Cubs room temperature and that's not what I want so are you going to make me a hot order of calamari or not. She then says if you want IHop order of calamari you will have to pay for it again. So I tell her that's okay you can throw this order in the garbage can and I don't think I will return again this is bad customer service. Mind you the order of calamari is $15.99 plus tax. Me and my immediate family go here frequently especially if there's an MMA Fight Or the Super bowl and we order their specialty of Famous deep fried calamari. They also serve Chinese food ala carte. We come here for their famous calamari and smelt. The prices used to be cheap but when I recently went it almost doubled the price. For a small tray of crispy calamari what used to be $30 is not $56 dollars. Are you kidding me? I don't know why it went up that high maybe the demand but it's ridiculous.
