Wah Fung No 1 was closed so we went to King's Kitchen instead, after reading favorable reviews about the roasted duck. That was a mistake, there was so much more fat, bone and cartilage than actual duck meat, that we left hungry and had to get a second lunch. I know duck is greasy but, ick. Normally I prefer spicier cruise over Cantonese food, but King's Kitchen is worth a visit to try their famous rice casseroles. Ours includes yellow eel, taro, sausage, and some other delicious bits and pieces. The BBQ meats are also quite goods though very oily, so don't indulge too too much. It's been a while since I've had good duck, chicken and/or pork over rice. My sister recommended this place. It was 6.50 for 2 meats over rice with some bok choy and came with a very salty melon soup. As you can see in the photos, the meats were all very good pieces without too much fat and/or bone. We asked for an extra scoop of the special soy sauce over the rice, which was a questionable choice as it made the rice so tasty that I finished it all. My friend recommended this place for their claypot rice (aka rice casserole) since they were both cheap and delicious, so I was really excited. I got the spare ribs with black bean sauce claypot and we got bbq pork, beef rice roll, and shrimp rice roll to share. The bbq pork came first and was smaller than we expected, but delicious. The rice rolls came next and we were disappointed in the size and the pricing. The beef rice roll only had 4 pieces and the shrimp had 3. Not worth the price which was about $4 for each plate. I was really disappointed in the claypot though. First, they messed up my order, giving me frog and saying it was spare ribs. Second, they rushed in making my claypot and so the rice was undercooked and still watery and mushy. The best part of the pot is supposed to be the crispy rice that forms on the side of the pot, but because my pot was watery, it didn't form. The pork ribs were great though, but I was really sad about the rice. I wouldn't have mind if they took longer on my pot cuz I would rather wait and have good food than to be quickly served mediocre food. I tried some of my friend's rice and it was what a good claypot should be: perfectly cooked rice with crunchy, slightly browned rice from the sides of the pot. We went to King's Kitchen for dinner, and the experience was very disappointing. The service started off okay--the waiters gave us plates and water--but things quickly went downhill. My dad had to ask for water three times because he was really thirsty, and while they eventually brought it to him, no one else at our table received any additional water after the first serving. The food looked okay, but the taste was very mediocre. When it was time to pay the bill, I was told the payment machine was broken, and they were only accepting cash. It's hard to believe that a restaurant could have a broken payment machine and make no effort to fix it. This made me suspect that they might be trying to avoid taxes by insisting on cash payments. I explained that I didn't have enough cash to cover their mandatory 15% tip but offered to pay part of it. The waitress then grabbed a note from the wall above the machine and told me I could Zelle the rest of the tip. This further raised my suspicion that the machine might have been intentionally "broken." Due to the poor service, we hesitated to pay the tip, and my mom became very upset, wanting to call the complaint hotline on the restaurant wall. The waiter suddenly said it was okay not to pay the tip and just asked us to leave. As we walked out, the server even told us not to come back. I usually tip at least 15% when the service is good, but the service here didn't deserve it. Would never recommend it to anybody. read more

Good was alright but worst attitude server. Food was okay but service was unacceptable. Five of us were doing a food crawl where we order small dishes at many places and we got to Kings Kitchen and ordered two dishes which came out around $17. The lady waitress who took our order was already judging us hard when we only ordered a few dishes. We finished our food in like 15mins and ready to leave, we asked for a check and at the end we gave a 18% tips. The same waitress came to look at the receipt, look dissatisfied, yelled at us how we have five people and give so little tips. One of us then just left $20 cash on top of it to get us out of the situation. Though I disagree with how we resolve it. I think it's disturbing for the waitress to call us out on how much we should be tipping when she did perform an excellent customer service. She would be rated negative 2 out of 5 stars. We understand that this place is operating in America where tips become a big deal if customers don't pay, but at the end of the day it should be up to customers to evaluate how much they're willing to give. This place definitely left a bad taste in our mouth. We will never come back and we will continue to never recommend this place to our friends and family. read more

This place is absolutely perfect. Not only does it have a clean appearance and an air conditioned interior, its menu is full of reasonably priced, delicious food. I got the two item BBQ rice plate, and opted for roast pork (char siu) and cuttlefish, which is an extra dollar. It all came out to 7.25 which is extraordinarily affordable. The plate is packed with food. So much meat, and the rice is perfectly drizzled with the juices from the BBQ. The best part is that they also give you a ton of steamed Napa cabbage. It could honestly be split into two meals since it was so much food. I regretfully ate the whole thing in one sitting but won't do that next time so I can savor the meal twice. They also serve complimentary hot tea with your meal. Everything about this place is perfect. Will be back very soon! read more

There were a few people waiting and it seemed like they were all waiting for their food. I asked the cashier and they confirmed it was not ready. I waited another 15 minutes before it was ready. Another great found in Chinatown! Heard about this place from family that it has the best claypot rice. It was a late lunch around 3pm and surprisingly there were quite a few people there. Restaurant is rather small and tight but manageable. Rice noodle with fried shrimp: $3.75. yelpers seemed to rave about this appetizer and it certainly did not disappoint. I also used the special rice noodle sauce. Delicious!! Preserved meat rice casserole: $7.75! Perfect on a cold day. I did add some soy sauce to the rice because soy sauce over claypot rice always makes everything taste better! Congee with pork and preserved egg: $4.75! Another great price item. I got this to go for my boyfriend. It had lots of ingredients although a bit watery. Overall, the prices were very reasonable, service was quick and attentive, food was delicious. I came here for the clay pot rice - at less than $15 in the US it's practically a steal. We got a preserved duck clay pot, yellow eel + frog clay pot, fish cake cheung fun, and cha siu cheung fun. The preserved duck clay pot was the best item out of the bunch, because the rendered fat added some extra crunch and aroma to the rice. The yellow eel and frog were only ok - I wouldn't combine two meat options here because they'll give you less of both and still charge extra. They were also less aromatic than the duck one. The cheung fun batter was pretty thick, so I'd stick with getting those from a dedicated shop instead. read more

Was a bit underwhelmed by this place......but maybe im being biased and just saying that because of my dissapointment in the closing of ah wai which had imo the best claypot rice in chinatown. Came here ordered a claypot rice and 2 apps a shrimp rice roll and beef rice roll. The apps were pretty disappointing since they didnt really come to me pipping hot and soft like i like em........so cold and stale is not a good sign. This was the place that a family friend has been raving about their hot stone rice bowl (aka rice casserole). Finally got a chance to try this place after the original restaurant choice was rejected by some members of the group. On a Wednesday evening, we met up and the place was packed. This place was more suitable for 4 people or less groups. Otherwise you might wait a while to be seated for groups of 5+ which was what happened to us. We were promised a table and another group with a smaller number of people jumped ahead of us. The entrance was narrow and not suitable for larger number of waiting customers, we were hovering over the patrons seated near the walkway which was never comfortable for customers eating nor waiting. The space between the tables were narrowed so it's best not to have a lot of items since there wasn't a lot of space to put your items and eat comfortably. Food-wise some dishes are awesome; others are okay. Congee: we got 2 dishes - Seafood -- which was the typical dish - Special which was good -- forgot the name. Rice Noodle Rolls/Crepes: we got 3 dishes - Scallions and Dried Shrimps dish was great; - Roast Pork was chopping up into smaller pieces which is good though you lift the rice noodles roll, it falls apart which I wasn't crazy about. - Fried Fritter (Dough): this was great. Rice Casserole: we got 4 dishes. - salted fish with minced meat -- this was great! - taro with preserved meat -- this was great! - preserved meat -- was ok. - chicken - was ok. My friends loves there's clay pot rice and said it most authentic compared the limited places you can get clay pot rice in NYC. However as I picky eater I don't think their clay pot rice is half as good as the ones in HK. The tables sauces and kitchen doesn't look very clean as well. read more

What brought me here was their hot stone rice bowl, I grew up eating it and was seeking a restaurant that served it well. Their BBQ meats were also good, but it didn't stand out to me as much as the hot stone rice bowl. It's been a while since I've last been here. I've been wanting to come back here for a while and was really looking forward to it. We were immediately seated after arriving. We ordered eel rice casserole, rice noodle rolls with beef, rice noodle rolls with bitter melon and beef and rice noodle rolls with fried fritters. The eel rice casserole took about 20 minutes to wait. No biggie because we ordered rice noodle rolls to hold us over. The eel casserole was delicious. There were decent size slices of eel on top of the rice. Hubs loved it. The rice noodle rolls with beef and rice noodle rolls with bitter melon and beef were a big disappointment. The beef was thick and hard and hard to chew. The bitter melon were just a few thin slices on top of the beef and raw, even though it was inside the rice roll. If I knew that, I wouldn't have ordered them. They were dense and inedible. My daughter thought that the noodle rolls were oddly shaped and not the usual shape we'd expect to see. The rice noodle rolls with fried fritters were the best of the 3 rolls. The fritters were nicely fried and the rolls were soft. Note to self, don't order any rolls with beef in the future. I'm giving it 3 stars because the fried fritters and eel casserole were delicious. Other than that, service was quick. If we decide to come back, will try other items on the menu. I ordered 3 dishes Fried Fritter Rice Rolls w. Shumai, Summer Truffle Country Chicken and Poached Egg with Beef on Rice Casserole. The fritters were fried really crispy and held up during delivery. The Summer Truffle Country Chicken dish was cooked in a casserole and by the time we received it, it was overcooked and stringy. The chicken parts were not boneless and the dish was cooked with reconstituted tea tree mushrooms with long slightly tart stems. I thought it was dried lily buds, because these mushrooms tasted similar to it and had a chewy texture on the stem. We found only 2 thin slices of hard nutty crunchy truffle in our dish and we expected more because of the photo on the menu. The dark brown gravy was a light mild flavor largely based on the mushrooms. It paired well with added soy sauce and spice condiments. The Poached Egg with Beef on rice Casserole had tender beef, crisped rice along the sides of the pot and a perfectly poached egg. There was no gravy. The rice was plain and overall the flavor was very light. We were given soy sauce on the side which was perfect with this dish. I had meant to order Beef Navel Casserole, but I simply said Beef Casserole without thinking it could get mixed up with another dish. The restaurant charges a $2 deposit to take home a casserole pot, refundable on return with proof of receipt. We ordered salted fish and frog legs and chicken, it was ok. Ordered noodle dish, it was took saltly had to make them redo dish. Excellent spot for a casual Cantonese meal, with my favorites being their claypot rice casserole dishes (bo zai fan) and their unique fried fritter rice noodle rolls. I've actually never had meat in my fried fritter rice noodles before, and I'm wondering why isn't this a thing at other restaurants?! It's. soo. gooood. I don't think I want my rice noodles any other way anymore! Their popular bo zai fan here is authentic and tasty (don't forget to add the soy sauce), with my favorite part being the crispy rice at the bottom of the pot. There's a good handful of options to choose from - I really enjoyed the one with poached egg and minced meat, but there are some others that looked delicious as well. On top of that, the regular noodles, congee, and rice dishes here are both cheap and satisfying. Their storefront is also clean and bright, something that seems to be rare for Chinatown restaurants.
