I had my sights on three other popular pancake spots, but due to poor planning, I had not realized they would be closed on specific days of the week. Koa was a sweet little save! It is located in what had become my favorite little neighborhood, Kaimuki. Had I known they would be open for indoor dining, I might have entertained a sit down meal, but I had already ordered through their app, so I took my short stack (3 pancakes) of Mac Nut Pancakes ($6) in my carry out box to eat in my car. It was just 3 pancakes in a "short stack" but it was of a mighty size. The cakes were cakey indeed and quite dense but milky and soft. Macadamia nuts were present in a thoughtful amount throughout and offered that bit of chewiness to counteract the density of the cakes. I was supplied with an abundance of syrup for my take out order. I didn't have any butter but I might have asked for none as I don't really like butter on my pancakes anyway; they are already filling on their own. Service is terrible. Called for about 15 minutes one morning trying to place a take out order. I get their busy and I did t mind calling multiple time. When I finally got through the lady complained that they were "kinda busy" and to call back later or to come down. I was so shocked that I couldn't even respond before she hung up. What's the difference between me placing a phone order and me coming down and placing an order?! I'm waiting either way, I just want to wait in the comfort of my own home. This breakfast joint was recommended by a local active duty Navy Sailor. He had been stationed here nine years ago and said it was one of his favorite spots for a filling breakfast. Paid parking is located right behind the location, make sure you have a few quarters handy for the meters! There was a table available right away. You order at the counter, take a number and they bring your order out to you. Orders come out quick! We ordered the red velvet pancakes and an omelet. Portions are large! The pancakes were perfectly fluffy and the omelet was bursting with fillings. Everything was delicious and kept us full almost all day. Staff was extremely friendly and prices were fair. Good quantity and quality. They just updated their order process so no more phone orders, only online or come in and order. It's nice and easy. The staff are all super friendly and this is definitely one of my go to places when I'm feeling small kine lazy and want some good comfort food. If you haven't tried it you should definitely give Koa Pancake house a try. Looks like they have started doing dine in again which is relieving because with all of the COVID shenanigans going on it felt very lonely inside with all the tables empty. I'm really happy that they were able to make it through what was hopefully the more trying parts of all of the restrictions with the "new norm" and they still seem always busy. I've always liked going to the Koa in Waipahu, but was really disappointed with the service in Kaimuki today. We were the first ones in our group to place an order. The wait time on the wall said 20 minutes. All of our friends got their food and finished eating before we even got our food. It was over 30 minutes before I asked the food runner to check on our order. He said it was coming out shortly, and it came out a few minutes later. The guava lava mochi waffle didn't have much guava flavor at all. The waffle itself was good. The Denver omelette was burnt. We likely won't return to this location. read more

When you walk in the Interior of Koa is decorated nicely, but the noise level is a little more than average.(It doesn't help when the servers are yelling out ticket numbers for customers food). Yes.. it is a order at the counter, seat yourself and a server will be your food out type of place. This past weekend the ohana got together to pay a visit to mom, then it was time to head out for breakfast! We were originally trying to go to the restaurant that use to be old 12th Ave Grill (Now called Koko Head Grill), but there were so many people waiting outside for a table........decided to take a raincheck on this place. We were thinking of heading to Big City Diner, when my sister said she wanted to go to Koa Pancake House. I've been here just one time (when they 1st opened up at this location in Kaimuki), and haven't been back since because my dining experience wasn't so good. I'm glad I came back here again, as this time the dining experience was so much better! For breakfast I ended up ordering a "special #2". This deal is unbelievable! For $8.45 you get two eggs (your choice on how you like it made), bacon, spam, Canadian bacon, & choice of starch (pancake, rice, potatoes). I ended up with the pancakes of course! I must say........it was just too much food! I could not finish off my pancakes, and I was thrown off when my eggs were delivered with all 3 meats. I had thought the eggs come with just one type of meat, so I had told the cashier that I wanted the spam, not knowing that all 3 meats were included in the special. Just a quick tip, there is limited parking here, so best bet to go and find street parking or park in the municipal parking lot. Also, there is no waiter/waitress service.............kinda like Zippy's Kaimuki, where you order your food, then find your table to eat. Although someone will bring out your food & drop it off to your table, there is no restaurant service. It was really busy this weekend, but I must say there were very fast & efficient! read more

I placed my order around 12:45 earlier today via Grubhub. I noticed their last order is 1:15 pm . I called the restaurant directly since Grubhub doesn't provide a NOTE section for Special Instruction. Koa Pancake stated they don't have my order. And yet I have the receipt from Grubhub. I contacted Grubhub and the restaurant several times. They still don't have my order with special instructions. The driver arrived at the restaurant and showed them the receipt I text her. Koa Pancake made a lousy excuse that according to them I don't answer certain questions when I placed the order online. I NEVER SEE ANY QUESTIONS. I think they turned off the order system before 1:15pm. They made the mistake and accused me of not answering questions???? read more

Order the pancake with 2 eggs breakfast. The eggs on top of the pancakes were sunny side up. The whites were burnt, dried and stiff. Each of the 3 pancakes were of different sizes but each was very heavy, not fluffy and/or light. The pancakes had some kind of black (looked like) sprinkles on them and on the bottom of the take out container. Upon closer examination, they looked and felt like little specks of plastic like from the tips of a plastic brush. I ended up having to throw out the whole order. I grew up in Honolulu and recently visited with my family and a few friends, all of whom were first timers to Hawaii. As we were driving to the crack seed store on Koko Head Ave that amazingly hasn't changed much since I went there in the 80's, we drove past Koa Pancake House looking for parking. Made a mental note to check it out for breakfast in the coming days. Went back the next day at 7:00 am because you know .. still on Cali time. Ordered the Vinha D'ahlos omelette plate and my son ordered the breakfast plate with way too many varieties of processed meat on it ... oops my years in Cali are showing! We took our to-go boxes and sat on the tables at Kapiolani Park and enjoyed the breakfast. My friends and family got wind that we went without them and the next day we went en masse to have breakfast there. And the day after that. And again the day after that. So 4 days in a row we went there because they loved it that much. All in all, it is a pretty good place, the staff were super friendly, and it was only a few minutes from Waikiki. read more
