Kunjip is a Korean staple in the South Bay! The menu is fairly limited, but they do every single dish so well. Would recommend coming for an early lunch so you can find parking and avoid a wait. We came around 11AM and were seated immediately. -Galbi Jim: one of the best galbi jims I've ever had! You can really taste the quality in each of the ingredients. The sauce is nice and thick, not watery like some of the other ones I've tried. Lots of meat and vegetables. Everything is very chunky so you definitely need to use the scissors to cut them up into manageable pieces. Their rice cake is the highlight! The biggest rice cake I've ever seen, but it's still so chewy and not overcooked. Since it's so big, you only get 3-4 pieces though. -Seolleong Tang: I like getting a soup along with galbi jim so you get a little variety and a break from all the saucy flavors. It was actually a really big portion with lots of meat. Wish they gave a little more noodles! My friend recently had me try a Korean milky bone broth from a Korean restaurant. I loved it so much that she recommended I go to Kunjip, which specializes in Korean soup. We decided to meet up for dinner at 7pm on a Monday. Kunjip was very clean and modern-looking, and I noticed that the place had great ventilation since it didn't wreak of food fumes. We got a table easily, but the place got busy shortly after we arrived. Good thing we came when we did because the wait in the lobby area looked long. They don't take reservations but had a digital kiosk where you could sign up to be on the waitlist. Our food came out incredibly fast. We got our orders in 5 minutes or less from ordering. We both got the Seol Leong Tang (#1 on the menu), which was the traditional milky ox bone broth I came for. The broth was rich and had a wonderful umami flavor. I appreciated how it was loaded with tender beef brisket. I dressed the soup up with a bit of salt and tons of green onions. Loved taking bites of kimchi with the soup. Omg the spicy cheese galbijim is an absolute must get. It is amazing, and normally I'm not a big braised meat fan but in this case the meat was incredibly tender and flavorful. The sauce is lightly spicy and sweet and so tasty. The rice cakes are really fat and chewy, and the amount of meat that you get is crazy for the price. This could easily feed 3-4 people. I ordered the Galbi Tang and it was a flavorful beef soup with glass noodles. I really liked how sweet and savory the sauce was in the Galbi Jim and paired deliciously with the beef, broccoli, squash, carrots, and large tteokbokki. This place is the truth. The food is exemplary, the service is spot on, and the place is clean. The seating is spacious. The food here is served family style rather than individual and is priced as such. So let's start off with the service. All the ladies there are more than happy to help you and they're always on the move. They check in and are prompt with getting you whatever you request from them. They even asked if we wanted an extra pair of chopsticks for the table to use. They have salt, pepper, mustard, vinegar, and green onion. The seol leong tang was warm and comforting. Unlike a good bit of reviewers, I actually read that you have to salt and pepper it yourself. The cheese galbi was excellent. They meat was cooked so it was fall off the bone tender but still kept its shape. The rest of the ingredients were all the same. Tender while holding its shape. Came with a group of 7 around 7:00pm on a Sunday night and waited about 20-30 minutes. We were served hot tea and had our order taken quickly. Food came out fast. The restaurant is pretty small but well-decorated and not cramped. We ordered 2 galbi jjim, a soup, and cold noodles and it was a good amount of food for 7. The food was great, my favorites being the cold noodles and the maeun galbi jjim. I would recommend the spicy galbi jjim over the regular (it wasn't really spicy, and the regular one was a tiny bit salty). It is definitely expensive, our total ended up being almost $40 each for a normal amount of food, but it is high quality. Tucked inside a small strip mall with plenty of parking, which is always a plus. We came right when they opened--something we like to do because it often feels like the food is fresher at the start of the day. Known for their bone broth soups, and I ordered the dogani tang, a rich bone broth soup with a generous amount of tendon. The broth was incredibly flavorful, deeply nourishing, and served beautifully with a single jujube floating on top. It's the kind of soup that really sticks to your bones in the best way. Each soup comes with a bowl of perfectly cooked white rice and a set of three banchan (Korean side dishes), including radish kimchi and regular kimchi and cucumber kimchi which is typically the main banchans for tang place. The broth will comes unseasoned--there's salt at the table so you can taste the broth first and season to your liking. The portion size is generous--easily enough for two to share. A must is their Hwe Naengmyun, a cold noodle dish with spicy sauce and raw fish (skate). This version was outstanding--perfectly balanced spice and a delicately chewy fish. The flavors were bold, refreshing, and exactly what you want in a naengmyeon. Typical Naengmyun comes with icy tangy broth this one is no broth. The facility was clean, the service was fast and friendly, and there was no wait when we went. We enjoyed it so much, my mom and I returned again just for the cold noodles. Negatives: Waited an hour at 6:30pm on a Saturday night. The seat had a piece of meat and rice on it when we sat down. A guy in the parking lot was loudly muttering, and I heard him say "stupid b" as he was walking around, so that was weird. Positives: The food tasted fresh. Came over the weekend with friends since I haven't seen them for months. Upon arrival, there was already a wait with 5 parties ahead. Took about 20 minutes to be seated. FYI: your whole party must be there to be seated. Not a big deal since they were busy. Service for ordering felt rushed. We barely sat down and were looking at the menu for a couple minutes then a waitress came by asking if we were ready yet. We told her we needed more time and they ended up coming back a couple minutes after asking again. We ended up rushing and ordered their #1, #2 and #3 soups along with their $82 cheese galbi jim. When dropping off the soups, they say it pretty fast and leave so you have to pay attention when the food is coming out. We mistakenly ate the wrong soups our other friends had ordered because we didn't know which one was which until they all came out. Again, not a big deal because we ended up all sharing. The #1 brisket soup was pretty bland. It does say on the menu to add salt and pepper to taste, but I felt like no amount of salt and pepper could remedy the soup for me. #2 was probably the most flavorful soup as it had spice and flavor with the right amount of veggies and meat. #3 the galbi tang was easy and light to eat. You could never go wrong ordering this soup. The cheese galbi jim was a lot more flavorful than other Korean restaurants I've been to. I would definitely recommend it. The rice cakes inside were big and chewy. The galbi jim sauce was saucy, flavorful and made you want to keep eating it. Towards the end of our meal, when the waitresses were clearing our table, I noticed that she was also looking at the bill receipt after we paid but didn't think much of it since my boyfriend paid. As we were leaving, she stopped by friend and showed her the receipt asking for something. My friend didn't know what was happening so the lady flagged me down and showed me that we marked 18% tip but also wrote down cash. I ended up having to go out to the car to rectify the situation with my boyfriend as she followed me out to there. He meant to tip cash, but didn't have enough so he marked the 18% tip but he forgot to cross out the cash part he wrote. Now, a mistake on our side but she could've just asked about it the first time she noticed it when she was looking at it when cleaning the table. I felt second hand embarrassment being followed out. Also, it felt like tip is demanded eating here in America so it didn't help. I work at a restaurant as well, but would never make customers feel pressured to tip. Was glad to be able to come back here after eating at Kunjip Tofu so I could do a direct comparison. This restaurant, 10 Butchers, and Kunjip Tofu are all under the same owners, but Kunjip is at a lower price point than the latter two. In short, just come here if you're looking for good value and no frills. You're not going to get the wide array of side dishes you get at 10 Butchers, but you're going to have great food while not crying over your wallet. While Kunjip Tofu is trying VERY hard to be upscale, Kunjip's interior is honestly pretty nice as well. The wait can be long at both places, but the staff wasn't ushering me out the door to serve other customers like they were at Kunjip Tofu. Dating all of the way back to when I first started Yelping (oh so long ago), Kunjip has been high on my list of places to check out. At the time, I had heard tons of awesome things about them and, more impressively, that has only continued in the years since then. So, needless to say, I don't really have a good reason for not coming here sooner, especially since I've managed to check out other Korean eateries around Santa Clara that were lower on my list. That is, other than that I'm seemingly a stupid, stupid man for taking so long. Ugh...men, amirite ladies? Now, I have to admit - all of the positive things that I had heard about Kunjip certainly made it a lot easier to bear through some of the challenges of coming here. Both times I've been, parking has been somewhat tough, as the complex isn't that big and is also home to other popular eateries (including Tobang, which is also on my list...). There's typically a line for a table as well, but the wait at lunch is generally a lot shorter (it was about 15 mins compared to 45+ when we came for dinner). As for the menu, it's surprisingly modest, with just thirteen offerings - five Korean soups, three cold noodle dishes, two types of sooyuk, or three varieties of galbi jjim. However, what it may lack in quantity is more than made up for in quality, as every dish sounded so good! -- KKO RI GOM TANG - Ox Tail Soup with Green Onion and Dried Jujube...$30 This may be a simple dish, but it was so, so good! I didn't expect the soup to be so milky white, but it had a rich, beefy element that I loved. As for the chunks of ox tail, they were delicious and cooked perfectly! Okay... this place is pretty popular, not just among Korean folks, but among many Asians. It gets really crowded during weekend lunch hours, so I recommend going a little earlier if you don't want to wait too long. The servers are decent not overly friendly, but they do their best.
