Me and my boyfriend were seated in kind of a side enclosed corner, but the corner had two big groups and they were really loud, not a super pleasant experience grouped in with them in a small space. The kalbi tang (beef short rib soup) is the ultimate comfort food. Every time I take a sip, I feel like I want to curl up with a good book in front of a fireplace. The soup is lighted seasoned, but full of flavor. The size is pretty small for $27 though, and they charge for rice with soups. The kalbi jim (braised short ribs) is also pretty good. It can easily serve 2-3 people. There are a good number of meat pieces, and the bones can be saved to make your own bone broth (if you are into that). 1/2 star off: The banchan (side dishes) are minimal -- just kimchi, radish, and cucumbers. 1/2 star off: Service can be hit or miss. Kunjip has been my go-to spot for Korean galbitang and nangmyeon since college, and it still doesn't disappoint! Galbitang is RICH, comforting, and consistently well-made- perfect for when I crave something warm and reminds me of my mom's cooking. On hotter days, I always go for their nangmyeon (or the spicy bibim nangmyeon). The icy broth is incredibly refreshing- honestly, I could drink it on its own. Sadly, they no longer offer unlimited noodle refills for their nangmyeon, but still a solid dish. No reservations. You add yourself to their waitlist at the front when you arrive, and your entire party must be present when called to be seated. Expect long wait times, especially on weekends. That said, once you're seated, the service is quick and efficient. It was super busy and we had to wait around 45 minutes for a table for two. We ordered the Guk Bap and Galbi Tang. Guk Bap (5/5): One sip of this spicy ox bone soup made me remove my outer clothing as it seductively raised my internal body temperature! The spice isn't overpowering, instead flirtatiously tingling my mouth with the essence of Korean red pepper flakes. I love the addition of crunch bean sprouts and bouncy oyster mushroom. The bite-sized slices of brisket are mouthwateringly tender, but there isn't a lot of meat. Galbi Tang (4/5): This one is a cow meat lover's dream come true! Heavenly tender bone-in short rib requires you to channel your inner carnivorous predatory large cat to devour this generous portion of boiled beef! Arrived at Kunjip on a Monday evening around 6:45 to no wait and easily one of the classiest modern restaurant interiors I have seen in a while. If you're a smaller party, you might find yourself sharing a long table - and a pot of fresh green onions - with multiple other customers on either side. Service was no frills and efficient: banchan came out first (personal favorite was the cucumber) and our main orders in quick succession. Kalbijim ($27): first timer! Kunjip's came with 2 sizable short ribs and plentiful chunks of meat floating in the soup, along with a tangle of fried egg strips on top. Broth was deliciously sweet and savory - I might be hard pressed to find some better. Glass noodles were chewy and sticky, a little bit more than what I typically prefer but still great. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, something that can be hard to find in bone broth based soups like these. I took my leftover soup home to make steamed egg with. A must try dish! Seoullongtang ($22): broth was nicely milky and adequate when personalized with green onions/salt/dash of kimchi juice, but nothing I would deem particularly special. Good soup on a cold day. The interior looks very modern and they do have a yelp waitlist but you can only get on it by using the iPad that they have in store. Luckily I came late and I was first in like. I got a corner table which was very spacious for two people. For #4 it doesn't come with any noodles but rice only, so I added clear noodles into my bowl. Unfortunately, they forgot it and when I asked for it, they grabbed a pair of scissors at our table and started digging in my bowl. Lol sorta awk. But whatever, they realized they missed it and brought it out. I love how I can add in salt and green onions to taste. When you have the soup, you can feel how gelatinous it is, your mouth and lips get all sticky. You can tell how long it's been boiling for. And on top of that, it's still got the flavor. It's definitely one of the better places I have been to. BUT I do have a real complaint. Mid meal they took them away. And it was an hour till closing!! With many tables just being seated with their food not out yet that really sucks. They should only take the condiments away for those tables that are cleared out. I get that you have to refill but for those who just sat down, taking them away prior to their meal just isn't it when you don't close for another hour. Their seolleongtang is what they are known for and I would highly recommend getting it, and if you're here with a small group, maybe order a galbi jiim as well. Their cold noodles are fine, but it's nothing too special and you can get it anywhere else. The galbi jiim here is very flavorful, though the portion is not that big. It is quite pricey, but if you split it among a few people, it's not too terrible. The pieces of meat in the galbi jiim is extremely tender and the chunks are large. The rice cakes are giant sticks, though you'll probably only get like 5-6 rice cakes. The service here is generally pretty good, with the korean aunties being very attentive even though the place is always packed. This comes "tasteless," and my wife says we are supposed to add salt. I am sure I did this so wrong... This dish/soup is NOT for me. Bibim Naeng Myun - Korean cold noodles; this was just okay. The flavors were good, but the 4 slices of beef was a tease... 3 generous banchan, made well and free refills - Radish, napa cabbage & cucumber. Overall, a small menu done well. Atmosphere - Small local restaurant, enjoy the new (well new for me) remodel. CRAZY busy!! It was also this way before. And they are VERY strict on seating only entire parties. Lastly, I suggest waiting near the Yelp wait list iPad as they can blur out your name and if you do not respond fast enough, they move on... It's obvious that turning tables is their #1 priority. Plenty of mall parking. Open 7 days a week from 10am to 9pm or 10pm. Their website differs slightly. Bathrooms can use some attention. Service - Below average. No wait on weekday lunch but wait on weekend dinner. I've come back on several occasions now and have gotten around to trying most of the highlights. To start, their sullungtang is $22 and comes in a big steaming bowl with noodles, brisket, and a side of rice + side dishes. Flavor is on the lighter side here compared to most places so I had to add more salt than usual. The meat is adequate and cooked to a proper softness. Mul naengmyeon is also on the lighter side here too so I had to add lots of vinegar and spicy mustard. It's good for a hot day. However only comes with a slice or two of the brisket so definitely need to supplement with some other protein. Galbijjim - sweet and lighter on spice than other places. I like this version because I like the sweeter flavor so I can taste the complexity of the dish without being bombarded by spice. Also love their new remodel - everything looks so modern now. So happy we finally got to try Kunjip. Definitely one of my favorite soup and naengmyeon places in the Bay. Don't come starving though, we waited ~25 min for Sunday lunch even at 1:45pm. We were ready to devour everything by the time we were seated. We ordered the galbi tang, mil naeng myun, and bibim naeng myun (spicy). They give you 3 banchan, and they were all so good (radish was so crunch!); I also love the vat of chopped green onion in the middle of each table. The cold noodles were refreshing, hot mustard was on point, and the galbi tang was exceptionally soothing. Kunjip is the go to Korean spot for a couple of my Foodie friends. They've been coming here for years. I give Kunjip a solid 3.5 *** rounded up to 4**** My friend told me they remodeled the place recently, I couldn't tell you the time frame since it was my first time here. I'm not a big fan of the communal seating, I find it odd sharing your table with strangers. Luckily we weren't seated next to any obnoxious folks. The place was packed when we got here, and was still packed when we left. #KoreanEats: ~ Ban Chan - 3.5/5 This food inflation is no joke! Looks like all kinds of restaurants are cutting down on costs wherever they can. The Ban Chan here were simple but good. Not a lot of variety offered compared to other places. ~ 8. Kunjip has become a staple for me in San Jose! I'm so glad I found it. :) I mainly go there for their seolleong tang and galbi jjim. Their seolleong tang is very comforting and hearty, just like I like it. It comes unsalted and ungarnished, and there's salt and green onions at the table so you can season to your liking, which I appreciate. Anyways, the star of Kunjip, and the reason I come back over and over and over again, is the galbi jjim. I've tried it with and without cheese, and both taste delicious. This honestly is probably the best galbi jjim I've tried--better than Daeho for sure and also better than the popular Sun Nong Dan in LA ktown. The meat is so so so tender, and the sauce/seasoning has such a dynamic, aromatic flavor that make other galbi jjims taste flat in comparison. Also, their kimchi is sooooo freaking good, also probably one of the best kimchis I've tried haha. I even asked if they sold it so I can buy a jar and bring it home, but unfortunately they don't. The line can be long at times but the wait is still usually under 30 minutes. Keep in mind though that because their wait times are somewhat reasonable, they do tend to get diners in and out pretty quickly. I don't mind since they don't put a *huge* amount of pressure on you to eat fast and leave, but they do nudge a little bit here and there--for example, the check will usually come to the table before you're done eating, but you won't be verbally pressured to finish up right away. I usually spend about an hour at kunjip, which is sufficient for me. Parking can also be a pain at times as well, and is much better during off hours. Overall, Kunjip is one of my favorite favorite spots in the Bay Area--a go-to place for me, and also a place I bring all of my out-of-town visitors to. Would definitely recommend! read more

As a Korean, I can confidently say this place is the real deal. The moment you walk in, you're greeted with the cozy, bustling atmosphere of a true Korean eatery--complete with Korean aunties (ajummas) moving quickly between tables, making sure everyone is well taken care of. The food was absolutely delicious. The galbijjim (braised short ribs) was perfectly spicy and full of flavor. Every dish felt like it was made with care, and the quality of the ingredients really came through. Five years later and I continue to enjoy coming to this restaurant. They've had a facelift on the interior and it's very nice to look at the changes. The service is still great and the food amazing. I'll only speak on the food briefly to say that I liked the mildly sweet cold soup broth from my Mul Naeng Myun, in particular. My boiled egg seemed slightly overdone, but nothing egregious. I was surprised by how mild the flavor profile was, but did enjoy it. There was more than enough for a single person, if you wanted it would make a reasonable meal for two.
