But few stars... on account of their pretentious vibe... *mostly* rude or shunning staff...inattentive service...ridiculous prices considering they won't hire enough staff to serve everyone comfortably at a nice sit down that charges this much. The waitress we had doesn't care about your needs, and you have to ask her twice for everything. Ugh. Inhospitable. I don't usually post negative reviews, but for a $70 (or possibly more) dinner, usually restaurants like this get it right. But the food is amazing, no complaints there. But let me say one more horrible thing about my night at Kushiyu... when I asked my waitress for an ingredient exclusion of my allergen, she looked clueless and stared into space, then scoffed at my request. I couldn't tell if my food was safe. Got home and had an allergic reaction. burning. Do not pick this place unless you're a combination of spoiled, naive, and pretentious, a person who feels okay paying $4 for a glass of ordinary soda, and doesn't mind rude staff who never check on you or spoil the fork out of you - while you're paying $70+ for two people to have an unfilling dinner. Amazing food and service. Completed dishes were taken away within a minute of being done, water was refilled every 5 minutes, and food came out fast. Sushi was fresh, sauces were extraordinary especially with the yellowtail sashimi dish. Shitake mushroom skewer and hand rolls were also better than expected. Salmon tower was pretty and not too heavy in ingredients. Can't wait to come back and very happy to hear that they reopened after being closed for a couple years. The new renovations look elegant and clean. Lastly, the melon crème brule sounded strange but I'm very happy that it turned out quite nicely. read more

Quick update for Covid dining. Kushiyu is doing an excellent takeout and have converted the front of the restaurant and the neighboring store into outdoor dining. Best place to get your sushi fix! Still my favorites: albacore special sashimi, hamachi sashimi with yuzu paste and diced vegetables (ask for a side of creamy yuzu sauce in addition to the citrus sauce it comes with), albacore special sashimi, big boy roll with grilled lobster, albacore special sushi, spicy shrimp and spicy tuna crispy rice. Jalapeño truffle roll is a new favorite. Also for Kushiyakis I love the sea bass, filet and scallops. When we take the kids we get the cucumber rolls, rice, chicken kushiyaki and edamame. I can honestly say I had the best sushi in the San Fernando valley from here. The other night I had ordered some sushi to eat at home with my friend, we got an assortment of things like spicy albacore roll, lemon roll, spicy tuna crispy rice, spicy tuna rolls and some garlic edamame. I'm telling you everything was perfect. There was an hour wait for the takeout which was 100% worth it. Every single thing I ordered was incredible. They didn't rush and you could tell. First of all, we went in, put our name down, and we were told 30-45 minutes wait eventhough half of the place was empty.Then we asked again after 5 mins and Immediately gave us a table.The Fish was fresh,However this place is a ripoff. They charge you tripple than every where else. The servise was so bad.They give you the whole Menu to read, but if you want to order they have none of it. They also give you very little amount of ginger, When you ask for extra they charge you for it. The pros: The food was edible. The cons: Literally, everything else. Terrible service - the staff seemed confused and unsure about everything. Small portions - I can't remember ever getting a 6 piece cut roll?! It's usually 8, depending on the item. Incredibly overpriced - I've never in my life paid $14 for a 6 piece California roll ($2 extra for soy paper.) Two TINY pieces of sea bass on the sticks - $20! I could go on and on. Honestly, got recommended by a friend and drove past it so many times over the year but did not know the quality. Parking is a mess. The lot has a 30 min restriction on parking, very hard to find street parking. The place is always packed and lots of take outs specially on weekend dinner time. Once you make past both parking and the wait, you're in for a good time. Food is delicious, menu is diverse and drinks really complement the food. Wait staff is really well informed and helpful but they're so busy that you would need to ask for edamame and ginger. Appetisers go really well with drinks. My personal favorite is the spicy trio and the chicken liver kushiyaki. It's definitely expensive but the food and experience would not leave you disappointed. It's a go to place for celebrations for my partner and I. The entire menu is delicious but what does not stand out personally for my taste is The tuna sushi. And the top item in my opinion is the spider roll. Highly recommend food and drinks. Despite the logistical challenges, food and experience will make up for all of it. read more

Just had the WORST dining experience I've had in a long time. Used to come here before it closed down and never had complaints. Today, walked in for lunch. Sat there for 10 minutes and had to flag someone down for water. Placed an order at 12:15. By 1:10 pm, all that had been brought to us was miso soup and one appetizer. We had to leave so I asked the waitress where our food was and that we had to be somewhere. She asked if we wanted to cancel. I said please check on status and she disappeared never to be seen again. We literally got up and walked out. No one seemed to notice or care. Not a single roll came out in the hour we were there. The restaurant was not busy. Full staff of sushi chefs. Bizarre experience overall. We left super annoyed. I will never go back. Stick to Katsuya, Niko's or Brother's sushi in the valley. read more

We walked in with no line, no one waiting, with 6 empty tables and multiple empty seats at the sushi bar at 6:00 pm and were told it was an hour and a half wait. Any good hostess would have looked at the situation said 30 minutes or realized 6 parties not showing and no wait is an issue. Completely ridiculous to have that many tables totally empty and no wait list then turn people away. First of all, while everything we tried was delicious, the prices were significantly higher and the portions esp the tuna rice cakes and grilled items were smaller. The customer service here is horrible. The waiters put the tablet facing you and them and ask you to leave them a tip that is automatically calculated. They do not give you privacy to choose whatever tip you would like to leave. They also charge for every little thing you ask for... a straw and spicy Mayo. This used to be my go-to sushi spot whenever I visited home during my undergrad years, as well as one of the sushi restaurants in my rotation after I moved back to LA for a couple of years. Alas, life moved me onto other places, and I stopped coming to Kushiyu for a number of years. It was really interesting to return a couple of weeks ago to see how it's held up over time. It was as busy as I remembered it, but luckily we were still able to get a table for our party of seven with no wait. There was a huge variety of items on the menu, but we decided on the following for old time's sake: + Lime roll. This has always been my favorite item on the menu, because it's salmon on the inside and out, has the zest of thin lime slices, and a small kick from the jalapeños. + Lemon roll. Similar in concept to the lime roll, but with tuna, lemon and pine nuts instead. Pretty good alternative to the lime roll to mix things up. + Blue crab roll. I LOVE blue crab in sushi, so I couldn't pass this up. It was simple and composed of just blue crab, avocado, sushi rice, and seaweed. It tasted like the salted ocean. Yum! + Honey roll. The one bite I had was tasty. + Salmon, unagi, and tamago nigiri. The unagi and tamago were for the kiddos in our group, but I sure did help myself to the salmon nigiri. This is nigiri done right. The rice was slightly warm, which made the salmon seem like it just melted in my mouth. I wish we had ordered more of this. One thing to note about the acoustics: sound really reverberates in this restaurant. I had trouble hearing the people in my dinner group, and my toddler had a huge meltdown due to the overstimulation during dinner. I had to take him out of the restaurant and quickly pop in and out to get nibbles of my dinner. (NOTE: No stars were deducted for this since it was not the restaurant's fault. Toddlers can be finicky.) Meltdown aside, this was a great trip down memory lane. read more

We ordered 2 sashimis, crispy rice and 3 rolls. The last roll that got to the table had a BUG in it. The moment we saw that, they took the meal away and we stopped eating the rest of the food. The only food we ate was up to that point. The waiter took off the roll from our order, we asked them to compensate us more as we were hungry but did not want to eat the rest of the food because we were grossed out. Pleasantly served by Tan who was personable and knowledgeable of the menu - Tan helped me pick out the baked salmon roll as my daughter explored the spicy tuna. The basic rolls were really good!! We have been going to the KUSHIYU Japanese restaurant at 18713-15 Ventura Blvd in San Fernando Valley for a long time, even before it caught fire. Yesterday, as usual, we went with our two service dogs, but the manager, who is no manager at all, didn't let us stay, saying that we couldn't stay because he is allergic. How can they put an allergic manager in a restaurant where service dogs are legally allowed? All of California accepts service dogs. On top of that, he treated us, long-time customers, very badly.
