Service was quick and efficient. We actually got our order fairly quickly! We also went to other stalls to order, so I was surprised this one came out quicker than the rest. We ordered the curry katsu cutlet. Everything was in to-go containers, which was pretty convenient. The katsu itself was actually pretty good. It seems close to restaurant quality, which I expected it to be 'food court' quality. It was rather very crispy, and the batter itself had it's own flavor as well. Dipping it with the curry definitely elevates it as well. The portions are generous here, which is definitely worth getting here. It was awesome to be able to choose this restaurant at Haven City Market West Covina as the place that my daughter and I would get our first main course during the Grand Opening Day! It was a nice, new, and clean restaurant. The person at the front counter was nice as our order was put in. We were able to agree on the yummy Katsu Chicken! Really big portions make the price worth it. Honestly probably one of the better options in the new food court. Lots of katsu included and would recommend the curry sauce as well! Placed an order on this app when the store opened today on July 25th. Was told we had to wait 45 minutes because the owners supposedly told their workers to follow this protocol. Meanwhile, people who ordered after us all got their food. After 30 minutes, I figured out that they could have just redid our order on the system to get our food right away. The chicken katsu is crunchy and the serving size is perfect. My only issue is the service. I really think they need to find a way to streamline preparing phone orders and preparing in person orders. When I got up to the front they told me they would take my order "in a minute" because they had orders to pack. I didn't have a problem with that, but then they told me it was going to take longer to take my order because they had a lot of phone orders to pack, I waited closer to 10 min for them to take my order. It then took 25 min to get my food. I see the staff hustling to prepare the orders, so I understand they are working hard but I feel someone in person should take priority over a phone order. To long didn't read: If the menu board is 90% fried meat, that's usually a good indicator that's what they're good at. Learned my lesson the hard way. Sample the udon at your own peril. Fried stuff is hard to mess up. Ordered the udon combo on a weekday night. Plenty of people even on a weekday. Their counter had a long line just to order. However, they were efficient managing the pace of the queue. About a 3-5 mins wait. Our order took about 25 mins which is par the course for other nearby eateries. It looked like all their orders were bagged to go. Mine was packaged well: one plastic container for the hot soup, one aluminum container for the salad/katsu, one plastic 2oz dressing for the salad, one plastic 2oz dressing for the katsu, and utensils. Udon (2/5): Pros - The soup was pipping hot even after a 15 min drive to the park. My bowl was filled to the brim. The noodles were the right texture (bouncy and not gummy or undercooked). The fish toppings appeared to be fresh and cooked through. Cons: The soup flavor was horrifically sweet. That was my biggest gripe and ruined the whole dish for me. Others had a taste and agreed it was sweetened beyond what was typical. The soup should be mildly savory or salty if not outright bland. It's basically soup stock, soy sauce and mirin. It was like drinking candy soup. Definitely left a weird aftertaste. Also had to chug a lot of water afterward. Katsu w/ salad (4/5): Can't really go wrong. The pork katsu was breaded well and the crunchy exterior spoke for itself. Dipped in the complimentary sauce, it's basically a comfort food. Meat wasn't dry. Nice breading to meat ratio. You definitely need the sauce though. It's bland otherwise. No complaints. For the udon combo, the katsu only comes with salad. By salad I mean shaved purple and green cabbage with little bits of the katsu panko breading sprinkled on top. Tossed the salad dressing onto the salad, gave the lidded container a few shakes, and ate about a quarter of it. If you know cabbage, you know it can be bitter. Mine was just a little too bitter.
