Simply walking into La Farine and seeing all of the bread lined up makes me so happy lmao (see polaroid edit of La Farine's bread display below to spark some joy!!). The gorgeous, cozy decor and sheer number of breads make me feel as if I'm actually in a beautiful bakery in France. We came around 11am and there was still a good selection of bread. I've tried an assortment of their baked goods, and none of them have disappointed so far. Their baguettes taste as good as good as they look; they tear apart so well, and have such a soft interior. I've also tried their focaccia rolls -- both the goat cheese one and the bell pepper one -- and they were also amazing. I personally preferred the bell pepper one simply because I thought the amount of goat cheese on the roll was a bit overpowering for the size of the roll, but it was still delicious. As for the fruit tart, I appreciated that it didn't fall apart while eating it, and the filling of the tart was rich and complemented the fruits really well. Overall, I love La Farine and I'm excited to try even more items in their bakery :')) read more

Review #049 - 2017 I've had this place bookmarked for quite some time. So, when I ended up meeting my buddy, Tony, at Philz and saw that the address popped up as being less than 0.08 miles away, I decided to pay them a visit. Even though it was only a few steps away, we had a hard time finding it because the sign wasn't visible from where we were standing. The numbering on this street was also a bit confusing. After a bit of walking back and forth, we finally spotted the sign. The place wasn't busy when we showed up around 12:30 on Saturday, which was nice. I ordered 5 different savory pastries and 2 eclairs to take home for the kids to share since they didn't have lunch yet. When I got home, I noticed that there were only 4 pastries in my bags so I was kind of annoyed since this was the second time in the week that someone forgot to give me an item that I had paid for. I thought all the pastries were just ok. Both of the focaccia tasted like bagel pizzas and the other bagel looking thing was actually pretty good. The boys said the eclairs were just ok, not as good as the ones that we get from Fourneé. I guess seeing all the great reviews kind of set my expectations higher than it turned out. read more

Piedmont store: the bread is great and I love their ham and cheese sandwiches. Unfortunately they seldom have any. Oh my goodness, their fruit tarts are beautiful. I can't say much about their other items since I only picked up one of their tarts, but it was a work of art- a soft buttery flaky pastry topped with mango, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, kiwi, and blueberries. I just loved all the colors and it made a great gift. My main complaint was that while the pastry itself was good, the fruit was just not quite as sweet as I would have liked. The mango tasted a bit hard as if it could be a little riper. And the cost for the tart was $24. It's a bit steep but could be a good alternative to regular cake. The crust is flaky and made with butter without the heaviness. The seasonal fruit is fresh and retains the natural sweetness without the clear sugar coat that other bakeries slab on fruit tarts. But the biggest difference maker is the custard. It is creamy, with hints of vanilla bean, and has the perfect combo of lightness. It's also not overly sweet and compliments the fruits. No fruit tarts are alike and even though there is a huge selection, make a stop early (by 2/3pm on weekends) before they are sold out. And, while you are there, try the apple croissant and the morning buns. read more

It wasn't crowded and it had one large communal table to sit. This is more of a buy and go kind of bakery. I ordered my pastries on the go. Here's what I had: CROISSANT - $2.25 This honestly tastes store bought, but at least it has a clingy crunchy outer shell. It wasn't bad. It was just ok. I more expectations on this. SWISS TWINKIE - $2.95 This was a puff pastry that looks like a croissant filled with a roasted nut puree, shaped like a croissant and topped with cinnamon sugar. Everything about this pastry tasted hard. It was sweet, and I wanted to try it because it sounded unique. Overall it was ok. Maybe if I had it fresh right out of the oven it would have been yummier. I've been eyeing this bakery for a while now, but I've always had the misfortune of having recently stuffed myself silly from something else. Today was actually no different (having just inhaled a large salad AND an ice cream cone), but with the help of my friend, our stomachs combined were able to eek out some space to try out a few delicious selections! Swiss twinkies- Man, LF does not mess around with their puff pastry! Contrary to the super soft, sponge-like cakes of "American" twinkies, these swiss pastries are all crispy, flaky goodness. In the center, instead of the marshmallowy based crème, there is a delightful concoction of course nuts. I particularly like the cinnamon and large sugar crystal sprinkle on top of the pastry...just to add that little extra crunch! Savory morning bun- The bottoms of these babies might barely fit into your standard regular cupcake sized tin, but the "muffin tops" are absolutely spilling out their beautifully layered swirl of croissant-ish pastry and tastefully salted ham. I think it's the dill in here that makes the overall taste of the bun remind me of one of my favorite quiches...certainly a great memory to evoke! Savory focaccia- There are at least two different flavors, but the one my friend and I shared was a dried tomato based one with plenty of herbs in the bread itself... which was supppperrr well done! I love me a good bakery - I don't think anything puts me in a better mood than the heavenly aromas of freshly baked goods. La Farine does many things, and many of them are done exceptionally. For example, their fruit tarts are phenomenal; the pastry is buttery and flaky, the crème pâtissière filling is delicious, and the fruit selections are beautiful. They also do breads well; I don't think I've tried a bread from La Farine I didn't like. I'm a huge fan of their raisin nut bread and raspberry walnut scones; the challah is decent; and they make a savory Gruyere pizza-bread that is delicious. The one thing that repeatedly disappoints me is their inability to get chocolate desserts down. I am a true choco-holic. I get depressed when I go too long without it. What's worse than going without it, though, is buying a chocolate treat only to discover that it doesn't taste as good as it looks. When you spend your whole day fantasizing about that chocolate butter cream cupcake, it's painful to discover that an average cookie tastes better. A day's worth of fantasies, wasted!!! Le sigh. So, after multiple attempts, I'm sad to report that I find myself defeated. I cannot find a chocolate dessert at La Farine that is worth the purchase price. I've even carted home holiday cupcakes only to find them dry and decidedly unremarkable. Huge faux pax for a French bakery! This was the second (of six!) planned stops on today's much-anticipated UYE East Bay Cupcake Crawl. Caveman and I were in attendance and I dutifully sampled several desserts here. Cupcakes: breakfast of champion Yelpers... I came prepared with individually wrapped Purell handi-wipes, my thermos of ice-cold whole milk, and even a butter knife in order to facilitate judicious parceling of many cupcakes. Lydia W., Michelle W. and tasted together; I got a bite - actually, two - of a delicious raspberry layered cake that had beautiful, fresh raspberries on top. I'd describe it as a tiramisu, only with alternating cake (not ladyfingers) and a light but still properly creamy raspberry filling. The bakery smell was enticing, first of all - and because we arrived en masse, it was a bit overwhelming and chaotic. I chose to stick with the theme and picked a Vanilla Cupcake with buttercream frosting (blue) and a cute little lavender sugar butterfly on top. I tasted and shared my impression (and my sweet) with Lydia W. and Michelle W. When I cut into my cupcake, the buttercream completely separated from the cake. The crumb was very dry, though it had a distinctly vanilla flavor. I just thought it wasn't a great cupcake because it wasn't moist and definitely looked "cuter" than it tasted. The buttercream frosting was nice: butter, cream, and sugar... it didn't coat my mouth like a lot of that gross hydrodgenated oil-based stuff will do, so I certainly appreciated the decadent mouth feel and authenticity of the frosting. In the interest of full disclosure: I readily confess that I am just not a "pastry person"; Caveman eats Gluten Free... and neither of us drink coffee. But I have had kick-ass cupcakes, the ethereal Red Velvet Cake that is still available from www.Doughboys.net - they ship all over the country, and it's the best I've ever had. I would absolutely return for another entirely self-directed sampling of what La Farine has to offer. I have perused their website and would put together a Staff/Teacher/Welcome basket of pastries as a gift in a red hot second. Everything else at La Farine does little to hold my interest. That Morning Bun? Meh. Could be softer, more delicate, flakier, just a wee bit smaller for better maneuvering a gobbling up and breaking apart. That berry coffee cake? Dense like an untrimmed hedge. Those cakes? But when it comes to that frangipane, in the words of Sonny and Cher, "I got you babe". It just works. Perfectly flaky, infinitely delicate, luscious almond flavor with all of that well-made almond paste spilling out of the sides and forming a sort of rudimentary crust that is probably the most delicious part of the whole extravaganza. Morning bun? Or cake? Croissant? Or fruit tart? Decisions, decisions. Confused of which line to stand in, I took a wild guess and just started walking toward all the sweets where the rest of our herd of hungry Yelpers seemed to be gathering. Already had my mind set on what to order, so I wasted no time. A slice of raspberry royale, please!! (Taken straight from the website): "Almond paste genoise cake soaked with Amaretto, layered with creamy raspberry white chocolate mousse, finished with vanilla buttercream and sliced almonds." I'm a sucker for anything raspberry, so there was no turning back with my decision. Such a huge slice couldn't have been meant for one person, so I made my rounds and shared a taste with others. The "oooooh...mmm...wows" from fellow Yelpers solidified the deliciousness of this treat. I especially loved the light, fluffy raspberry white chocolate mousse. Not overly sweet with the perfect amount of tartness in every bite. However, the frosting on top wasn't working in my favor. Thanks to the cream being so hard and dense, I wasn't able to slice the perfect piece with my fork without completely mutilating the cake. Sadly, that was a huge problem with the cupcakes as well. Taking a quick bite from Kim D.'s vanilla cupcake with a big ol' hunk of blue buttercream frosting on top, I was not amused by the lack of moisture in both the cake and the frosting. I like cupcakes where the 2 sections just melt into 1. La Farine did not manage to achieve this standard. But I will admit, the butterfly candy on top was a nice touch in presentation. For about $4 for each slice of cake, I'm definitely a fan of the wide variety of selections La Farine has to offer. Sorry to give you only two stars but I have to keep it real. I was exposed to your artisan cakes a few years ago. Boyfriend's family always orders the Berries and Cream with Devil's food cake. And for years these cakes were superb! Every bite was a little taste of heaven. I loved this Berries and Cream cake so much that my sweet boyfriend would specially order a 14' for my birthday. For the past two years he would drive from San Francisco to Berkeley and back to pick up my special birthday surprise. The first year my cake was just as good as it's always been. But this last 14' Berries and Cream cake was awful. Terribly awful. This last cake was completely dry. Tasted like week old cake that had been sitting around, uncovered getting dry and crusty. And though the whipped cream tasted the same, there were virtually NO BERRIES!! What the hell is going on? For a huge 14' cake, I counted no more than 10 raspberries total. Granted, my birthday is in December and fresh berries are hard to come by in the winter - but if you're charging $60+ for a specialty berries and cream cake, there MUST be berries in it! Hella skimpy on the berries. Not cool. Besides the underwhelming cake itself, the writing on the cake was straight amateur. Not sure if you had one of your interns making my cake this year but the writing was so goofy it made the cake look less expensive and special. Normally, all the writing on your cakes looks uniform and professional. This cake's writing looked like a first grader wrote on it. It's important that I express how vital it is to be consistent with your cakes. This cake was something I looked forward to every birthday as one of my special gifts from the boyfriend. But now, I can't risk him spending $60+ plus driving from SF to Berkeley for a dry, non berry, tasteless cake. I believe in you, La Farine. I know you are capable of better because I've tasted it. But please, recognize that you're charging a lot of $$ for a less than standard product. Maybe next time I will order your Cherry Ganache Torte for my birthday. Awww La Farine. Maybe my expectations were too high but you just didn't measure up. It didn't help we ended up going unexpectedly to Tartine on the same day. That's a tough and maybe unfair comparison. Here are the list of items we bought from best to worst. 1. Wheat walnut levain -rustic with awesome sour dough flavor. By far the best item of the bunch. 2. Jezebel cookie/chocolate espresso cookie - great texture and flavor. Loved the dried apricots in the first. Loved the coffee flavor in the second. 3. Triple ginger cookie - we've had better ginger cookies, but this one had a really unique texture. Crispy and yet still chewy. Lots of ginger flavor. 4. Chocolate croissant for the kids - these were warm and fresh with lots of melted chocolate. hard to go wrong, but not really a standout. 3. Cherry biscottie/rugelach - ok. 4. Swiss twinkie/frangipane croissant -where the heck was the filling?! These were the primary reason for our visit and they were disappointing. Not only did the pastry itself fall down (both in flavor and texture), but there was very little filling inside. Yummmy!! Its no B Patisserie in SF, but damn good and damn surprising. My friends suggested this place as a good bakery, and since I love carbs like no other, I went a little spend-crazy. Though, for my baked goods, I was a bit surprised I didn't break a 20. Focattia: Honestly, I ate this thing cold. Which, probably did it no justice. But it was still darn good. It had roasted bell peppers, which was delicious and perfectly placed. A bit in each bite. The tomato sauce was also quite bomb. It was just a BIT greasy, though I'm sure I wouldn't have noticed were I to have warmed it up before consuming. Frangipane:delicious. Their almond paste inside is great, though it wasn't as good re-heated the next day. Word to the wise...if you're taking it for breakfast the next day. let it sit outside before doing the toaster oven thing. I fridge'd it then toaster oven. Hot on outside, cold on inside. I FAIL! But the deliciousness of the Frangipane showed through. Brownie: If you're a walnut lover, this is PERFECT. Every bite had a bunch of walnuts, and their chocolate is superior quality. It was really good. Nuke it with a bit of quality vanilla ice cream? Heaven. Chocolate Macaroon: I got this one because I asked our cashier of the ONE thing I MUST have in their store. I usually ask in places just to see. He recommended this, then backpeddled when I said I'm merely "ok" with coconut. I see what he means now...this thing is like pure shredded coconuts with the good quality chocolate. If you LOVE coconut, get this thing. If you're "ok" with it (like me), it borderlines too much. If you hate coconut, avoid at all costs. You have been warned. Chocolate Tart: I forget what they call this, but it is a chocolate lover's HEAVEN. Seriously. I mentioned my love for their morning bun in my previous review, but what I didn't mention is that I'm a sucker for all things salty. I've been wanting to try this place for a hot minute and was finally in the neighborhood. I got 2 pastries and a coffee, I wanted to come back to grab an olive loaf but I don't think I will be back. When I went in there was 2 employees behind the counter working the front, one with a long dark pony tail and another with a dark pony tail & blonde highlights. The employee who helped me had the highlights..I could tell she was irritated with the lady before me picking up a cake, asking questions, asking to have her water bottle filled. I patiently waited my turn and when she called me next I was very kind and polite to her, she was so downright cold and rude to me for no reason. Flipped the little card reader around and walked away before even finishing up our transaction, said thanks as she was walking away not even to my face...it was just so unwelcoming and stand offish for no reason that I won't be coming back or recommending this place I don't think, even if the pastries and breads look beautiful and taste good. To be fair, the other employee with the long dark pony tail seemed very gracious and friendly with customers. Each pastry looks luscious - the cookies, croissants, bread, tarts, morning buns, scones and even cupcakes. They have two types of cupcakes: chocolate cake with chocolate frosting or vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. The lovely cupcakes taste like the high quality cakes that they are. However, the frosting was cold (it should be room temperature) and firm. I did enjoy the creamy, sweet consistency of the frosting. The frosting was sweet without being too sweet or too buttery. The vanilla cake was dry. The brioche had a lovely deep brown crusty exterior. The inside wasn't as tender as I like. The shortbread cookies are thin, buttery and flaky. They're simple and well executed. Prices are quite reasonable given the quality of their baked goods. There's no seating inside the bakery and just a bench outside. If you've never had a baguette fresh from their oven after a slight cooling- crispy, slightly chewy on the outside and a not too dense, not too holey warm puff of carbohydrate heaven inside- you haven't LIVED. This bakery has the best bread EVER (well, this side of the world at least)- their rustic and sweet baguettes are in a league of their own when it comes to that particular variety. If it's 10:30 on the weekend, you will find me resisting the urge to eat about half of it before I get home- you can literally eat the whole thing without butter, olive oil or cheese and you wouldn't even care. Their cookies and other pastries are good as well- I recommend the triple ginger cookies (wonderful), their madelines are fairly good, the peanut butter is better than your friend's mom's. Two different mixed berry fruit tarts, a nectarine tart, baked apple tart, and a few other tarts that looked great. We decided on the baked apple tart since it's a crowd favorite. The crust for the fruit tarts are not too buttery and it's the perfect texture too. Some fruit tarts don't have a proper crust to hold the contents. It's sometimes brittle or doughy and this one is just perfect. Just a word of precaution: the crust isn't AS good the following day.. so eat it all the day you get it!! :) Another note: try their other goodies like a morning bun, a breakfast type pastry roll, Jezebel cookies, chocolate macaroons, biscotti, and their fresh breads. Took a break from Yelp for a few years due to some technical difficookies, but wanted to give a shout out to my old pal, La Farine, formerly of Solano Avenue. The branch on College is still with us and thank God for that! Hands-down, the best Ginger Snap cookie in the Bay Area!
