First time here, based on a local's recommendation. Menu is extensive, offering many items. I tried the "five cheese grilled sandwich" and the special "ravioli with pesto cream sauce." Local guy had fish 'n chips. Also ordered a side dinner salad (was wobbling for a wedge, but went traditional). Service was polite, and my salad was ready before I even finished paying ! Prices are decent, definitely not comparable to local "hoity-toity" places, but it's great food for casual or quick dining and seems popular with locals. Ambience is nice, was mildly busy for a Friday night, with singles, families and teens popping in. Two stories allow some spreading out, so although the place is small it holds more than you'd think and helps noise levels settle down a bit. TV on first floor, was tuned to baseball game. Drinks are several beers on tap or self serve fountain drink dispenser. The food came quickly. The salad was nicely mixed with tomatoes, cucumbers, sliced beets and added croutons. An extra ranch dressing was just the touch. The spinach and cheese filled raviolis were buried in a pesto cream sauce that included sun-dried tomatoes. Nice taste, good quantity (about 9 raviolis) and I would've liked a bit more garlic, but that's my preference. Came with side of cheesy bread, three pieces. The grilled sandwich was moderate sized soft roll (very soft - just as I like it) and grilled in entirety as char marks on top show. Cheeses, tomatoes, lettuce, onions and condiments made for a nice meal, with a dill pickle spear to boot. The fish and chips (wedge fries hidden under fish) was three large pieces of fish, not greasy and well batted, with side of cole-slaw and tartar sauce (a different yellow coloring, but good taste). La Prima La Stinka It's pizza. It's not rocket science. Sure, you had the added complication of delivering the pizza...but it's still pizza. Thursday night in St. Helena, which basically shuts down around 5:00 pm, and no, it wasn't a game night. So yah, we were probably customer number one...of one. In case you're having trouble counting, one plus none equals one...yah, just one customer. I know that can be tough. Especially on a Thursday night...did I mention it was Thursday? In St. Helena? It was. Okay so here's where you went wrong: 1. We called to order delivery and were immediately put on hold...and promptly forgotten. 2. We called back and actually placed an order that was promised within an hour, but after 75 minutes (that's an hour and fifteen minutes...which, for the record, is longer than an hour), still no food. (We were a mile away by the way...I know a mile is pretty far, but you know, we figured the delivery person probably had a car so it kinda makes that big, long mile seem like not such a big deal.) 3. We called to check the ETA, and without even asking who we were or what we ordered or when we ordered, the guy promised delivery within another 25 minutes. 4. We were patient and we gave you the benefit of the doubt and just went with it. But after 40 minutes passed (that's nearly two full hours from the original order and 15 over the new estimate), we still didn't have pizza...one, measly, medium pepperoni pizza. 5. We called back and the guy asked my name... ... and then asked what I ordered... ... really? You lost my order? Who knows? I asked the guy: "you don't have my order?" To which he replied: "we have your order, sir, but what did you order?" (At least he called me "sir.") 6. I guess if you've read through previous reviews, you get the idea things here can be great and sometimes lacking! Fortunately, our last visit was not the first our we'd probably never have returned!! Our unfortunate experience this last time was not the food, because our first attraction to La Prima Pizza is the tastiness of the food--everything we've experienced is well prepared and presented. We've tried lots of different kinds of dishes, pizza being only one of the times. Another highlight is the wide choices for vegetarian fare. Most of our restaurant experience as vegetarian is, if you're in the mood for X, then you can go to Y restaurant. But at La Prima you can keep going back many times and not have to order just one available meal. In a small city where so much of the eating venues are for the tourist trade, and priced like it, La Prima is a refreshing find for every-day folks. And it's only a block or so off the beaten path. Although the building looks neat, the interior is decidedly local type run-of-the-mill with counter service. Not where you take the Mrs. on Valentines Day! Some workers (manager?) could even spruce up a bit more! And, getting back to our one poor experience, we waited over 45 minutes for our food when we find out they had run out of an ingredient and had sent someone across to Safeway to get some! We just wish they'd have been honest (we were told, oh, yes, it's almost ready, be right out--it wasn't!) and asked us if there was something else we'd like without having to wait. Have had 4-5 meals here, big time hit-or-miss. It depends on who is working, or who is managing. Overall they need help controlling their staff; some nights it's pleasant, on two occasions the staff was pretty much out of control. The pizza is about average, the prices high for the quality. They are very shorthanded on staff and the last two times that I have called in for a pickup instead of eating in. (thinking it may be faster)....they are always busy and put you on hold forever. I am no pizza expert but seems pretty tasty to me! I have been there two times now, but at lunch, ordered the Hawaiin and was impressed both times. Not sure why the reviews of this place are pretty harsh, maybe my expectations are as high as the St. Helenians but I thought the quality was good, the place is pretty clean and the order takers were polite. Plenty of cheese, ham and pineapple on the pizza, it came out pretty quick and was nice and hot and melty like I like it. Price was decent, $16 for a med. two topping and a couple drinks so I wasn't complaining. This is generic pizza for the locals. The price is right. And they deliver. We like to get the nice big family salad with our pizza(s) to add just a touch of healthiness to our dining experience. Warning...the salad comes with beets. Not a lot of beet fans in our family...my mom pretty much gets all of those, which suits her just fine. Where do I begin? We order a takeout and it's only a 5 minute drive back to our hotel room and everything was terrible. The pizza was cold but at least the box was warm. Please note that we picked up our food 30 minutes after placing the order because we were told the food should be ready by then. The angel hair pasta was so overdone that all the pasta mushed together. It was tasteless except for the taste of oil because the pasta was drenched in it. We got their garlic bread and it's also cold. How do you do take out with cold food? Sadly we found this out after we got back to the hotel room and did not want to drive back over there for a refund because we didn't want to deal with this disappointment and get more mad. I didn't take them up on it, but instead decided to give it one last try. To my complete joy, the Pizza was amazing. The dough was perfect and obviously home made. I've been enjoying this location for about six years. I host an annual outing for 20-60 friends each spring. I always make advance reservations, the staff is always very welcoming. The venue is very accommodating- great outdoor patio seating. My guests have ordered just about everything on the menu and have given thumbs up. I have been eating at La Prima since I was a little girl. I used to love it. It's changed so much though and not for the better. A few times I've called and I've been on hold for more than five minutes. I hang up call again just to be automatically put on hold once again. Last few times I've had pizza, it's so dry that the crust and the dough separate. This last time the pepperoni pizza barely had pepperoni. There must of been about 2 pepperonis per slice. It's overpriced for the quality you get. The place itself is soooo run down. Even with the supposed improvements there is paint peeling off the walls, dirt all over the ground and cushions on the booths all ripped up. It's like they just gave up. I never dare order anything other than pizza. Usually when I have it's all horrible. Their baked potatoes aren't even baked, they are microwaved. One time my sister ordered a salad and got a moldy tomato. She called and complained and they couldn't of cared less. I've talked to many people about it and they all feel the same. Watch out for these rip off artists and double check your bill before paying. We visited La Prima Pizza last night because they offered a gluten free pizza dough. Their gluten free pizza is 10 inched in diameter which is standard. It is also a size "small" in the world of pizza sizes. They charge $14.95 for the dough and then every thing you put on it is extra. We asked for olives, pesto sauce, and sun dried tomatoes. In their published menu add-ons are priced by the size of the pizza. When looking at our bill, we were charged the add on price as if we had ordered an extra large pizza. Our $14.95 pizza was now $23.95. We questioned the manager about the extreme over charge and their response was that we ordered a "specialty pizza". That was total B.S. They just saw two tourists they thought they could rip off. We demanded our money back and left. Be really careful at this restaurant and double check your bill. It is a subtle way to over charge you and only raises the price of your pizza by a few dollars. It makes money for them and most tourists are too polite to complain. I have been bent on trying all the casual blue collar places to dine in upper & lower Napa Valley. From Andy's Burgers to Chinese, Pizza & Taquerias From Corona, Azteca, Rositas & la Playa. Today I thought I'd give La Prima a try. While on phone hold for 8 minutes to get info, I took the advice of the La Prima recording & checked out their website. I typed in la Prima & was brought to a google page with all the informational Links. At the very top of the page was a negative review. Below that link was their website. I thought interesting that one bad review topped the choice of links; labeling Prima as the worst pizza that Whip W. ever had. I still endeavoured to go as I didn't want to drive to my favorite place. to Napa. It was 8 o'clock friday and wondered if it would be full since I was on hold for 10 minutes. As I walked in, I was immediately hit with stark bright lights, messy tables full of food scraps, and a dish TV that was buzzing loud in black & white fuzz from not being in reception. There was a poster sized menu offerings above the counter. I was second in line & noticed only one table with a family of three. I asked how does this work to who seemed to be the manager. He was eating something and told me to just place my order at the counter as he spoke with his mouth full, his faux-hawk wasn't helping. As my turn came up I asked the same question of how it works. this is my first time here. The young lady's smile was redeeming despite some awkward statements like "we are short handed, and I'm quiting too"...and "we aren't Tra Vigne please don't judge us harsh". I thought where did that come from? Short handed for what? three tables? Of which one was to take out? There were 4 people behind the counter. One cashier (the young woman) the manager (eating) two pizza makers. As I looked at the poster menu offering buffalo wings, ribs, wraps, salads, sandwiches....my first thought was, IDENTITY CRISIS. So I ordered old reliable, pepperoni, sausage bell pepper mushrooms. What could go wrong...... It soon dawned on me I was in my first fast food pizza joint, set up much like domino's. But cafeteria style. {note, take a lesson from "Firewood" in Napa} To the side of the counter were almost empty holders of forks spoons straws. To the side a selection condiments tapatio & tabsco hot sauces, four dusty bottles of beer beside 4 choices of tap beers. I made small talk in choosing something to drink, in an attempt to view the pizza process. I noticed a well set up kitchen with the usual hardware. As I made my choice for tap beer and was assured it was cold I noticed the pizza cook take out an already rolled out dough on parchment, of which he & she proceeded to "wipe" the pizza sauce on the very flat dough with a hard plastic spatula. That was the second red flag. I paid $24.00 for a 4 topping pizza & beer. I thought "okay" that's good isn't it? As I turned to take a seat, the young lady with the honest smile & awkward comments said "oh, I'll wipe all the tables for you as she serviced two walkin guests. I found a decent table and began to wipe off the table with napkins from the holders on the tables, the were brown resembling the color and texture of toilet paper. WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT THEIR TABLE NAPKINS TO RESEMBLE TOILET PAPER and BROWN HAND PAPER TOWELS??? Tempering myself, I sat and viewed how others were dining, the bright bright lights, the recorded golf show replaying again. The stark walls, and the manager talking across the room to the young lady spraying my table & warm sierra nevada with a cleaning solution. I thanked her as she proceeded to tables spraying & wiping all the scraps of food bits on the floor. I rubbed my eyes, and thought that's okay, I'll eat pizza soon. after all, the pizza at the other table looked okay. As I sat I thought somthing is missing....The smell of food gosh darn it!!! Where was the aroma of yeasty dough proofing & cooking, where was the rich smell of ingredients redolant of pizza in the oven. Where was the olive oil, garlic, & melting cheeses. I sat thinking this in the penetrating austere lights & room; My pizza arrived in a plastic tray. As I waved my hand to get wiffs of pizza aroma I got nothing. it was cold. Blankly I picked up a slice in anticipation of stretching hot melted mozzarella. The cheese snapped. I took a big bite and remembered i could get burned from hot pizza. It was almost warm coming fresh from the oven. The joy of my first bite died as I CHEWED on a hard crust, CARDBOARD....reaching for table salt grated cheese, chili flakes did not suffice or bring out any individual flavours of each ingredient. I asked for a to go box and thought of Plump puffy New York Pizza, Mary's, Model bakery pizza & Filippi's in Napa. I left hungry. Never going back. Prima needs to learn how to make better Pizza. There are few inexpensive lunch options in St. Helena, and this is one of them. I like coming here because its easy, close to work, and simple. Order at the counter and pay at the counter, and they'll bring you your food. If you order off their specials of the day, you get 10% off. I've had their pizza, burgers, and salad, and they were all average. Still an enjoyable lunch. I prefer seating downstairs, but they have seating up stairs, and on the balcony too. read more
