On Saturday I took my niece and nephew to Greenville, SC for the Labor Day weekend. After researching restaurants with good seafood, we ended up at Larkins. I made a reservation and added a request for a booth or corner table. When we arrived, we were seated at a table in the middle of the floor. Since several booths were available, we asked for one. As the host began to prepare another center table, we sat down in one of several empty booths and told her we'd love to sit there. She was friendly, offered an explanation, and we sat comfortably in the booth. We started with a dozen oysters and an order of truffle fries for my 11-year old nephew. The oysters were fresh and larger than expected. Huge plus! The aioli that accompanied the truffle fries was amazing. Our appetizers were a 10/10. I ordered the Peppered Pink Panther, which was easily the best grapefruit drink I've ever tasted. I've tried 1 or 2 before at other restaurants and none of them were great. There was a service shift between the appetizers and entrees. Several tables appeared to be waiting for their food for a good while. An hour after we were seated, we were still waiting on our entrees. The delicious appetizers and bread saved the day. When our food was finally served, only one dish was hot. The salmon. My nephew devoured it. Unfortunately, the short ribs were room temperature at best. I believe it would have been close to extraordinary because the meat was still tender although it had zero warmth or heat. In this case, it was fair at best. The scallops were also tasty, but they were served without any heat, which made it lackluster. The lobster mac was disappointing. It wasn't horrible by any means, but it was absolutely not tasty enough to justify the price tag. I ordered it so the three of us could try it out. We each took a bite and felt like one bite was enough. Finally, we all ordered the apple caramel cake. It's made like bread pudding. Again, I'm sure this could've been a hit, but it wasn't even lukewarm. The ice cream was a real treat, but it would've been better with a dish that wasn't served at room temperature. Our dining experience for three wasn't worth the $275.00 spent (before the tip). I understand things happen and wait times may increase. Serving our food late but hot could've made the entire experience worthwhile. Could've would've should've. Three generous stars - solely for the drinks and appetizers. read more

The guys went for dinner Friday night while the ladies went to a concert and we went back Saturday night for a birthday dinner and ended the weekend with brunch. Had the same awesome servers all 3 meals - Trent And Isabelle. They did a fantastic job! Also met Bruce the VP of the restaurant group - truly a lovely guy. Our party had steaks and the sea bass Saturday night and various brunch items Sunday - we saw the French toast at another table and wished we had ordered that it all looked great! Hosted a dinner here while in town for a conference. Our servers were very attentive and personable. The food was excellent as well. We were seated in the back next to the door to the patio in the most uncomfortable booth you can imagine ... you have to slide the table out to get seated. The cold draft from the door was not welcomed. The food and service are as good as it was at the old location. Nothing above average. The grilled flat iron steak and the roasted salmon were somewhat delicious. The frites (probably frozen) and the squash were nothing special. Extreme Disappointment at Larkin's Greenville on New Year's Eve I had high expectations for our visit to Larkin's on New Year's Eve, which also happened to be my wife's birthday. Unfortunately, the experience fell far short of what one should expect from a restaurant with a reputation for fine dining and a price range of $50-$100 per plate. We made our 5:15 PM reservations well in advance and were surprised to find no valet parking or dedicated parking lot. We had to use a $20 pay-to-park lot across the street. Upon entering, we were seated promptly, and things started on a positive note with the she-crab soup, which was flavorful and packed with crab. While I prefer a touch of sherry in mine, it was still enjoyable. Unfortunately, that was the only highlight of our visit. Our waiter lacked attentiveness and professionalism. For a restaurant of this caliber, I expected much more. Despite noting in our reservation that we were celebrating my wife's birthday, he seemed indifferent when I mentioned it, responding with a simple "oh." When it came to the entrees, the experience only worsened. I ordered a Prime Ribeye, but was served the Prime Rib special instead. Given the delay and the fact that it was the evening's special, I decided to try it anyway--a mistake. The cut was overly fatty (50% fat) and completely flavorless. My wife ordered the Cajun Shrimp and Grits, but there was nothing remotely Cajun about them--they were dry and bland. My daughter and her friend chose the Pork Tenderloin with sweet potato purée. While the purée was surprisingly good, the tenderloin was overly dry. They also ordered a family-sized side of mashed sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and loaded mashed potatoes. The sweet potatoes were extremely bitter and inedible, the mac and cheese was just passable, and the loaded mashed potatoes were a disappointment: a bowl of plain potatoes topped with a dollop of sour cream, bacon bits, shredded cheese, and scallions--even though we had specifically requested no scallions. The service did nothing to redeem the poor food quality. The waiter never checked back with us after the kitchen staff delivered our meals. There were no offers of refills or any inquiries about how we were enjoying the food. When he finally returned with the check and asked if we needed boxes, we explained that the sweet potatoes were bitter and barely touched. His response? A dismissive "oh." He forgot to bring the boxes and had someone else deliver them later. This was not my first visit to Larkin's. When they were located by the river, they demanded and delivered excellence in both service and food. It's disappointing that they failed so miserably on such an important occasion as my wife's birthday. At $350 for this experience, I would strongly recommend considering one of the other upscale restaurants in the area just a few blocks away. These establishments have consistently delivered excellence over the years and are far more deserving of your special occasions. read more

We ate dinner at Larkin's and the service was terrible. Our server never told us her name and despite the fact that the restaurant was empty, she didn't come see if we needed anything. For a meal costing over $150 for two filet mignon, we were deeply disappointed as one steak was burned on both the inside and out and the other was burned on the outside and red on the inside. Brian was a awesome server but seemed slightly distracted. We ordered appetizers (crab cake and oysters). He left the table brought back the wine then asked if we wanted to start off with any appetizers. This was a shock considering we'd just ordered and he wrote it down. Once we reminded, we decided to place orders for entrees, because honestly we were just unsure at this point.The oysters were brought over but not the crab cake. We waited for a bit, (until he came back) and reminded him of the crab cake. He began to say he didn't remember us ordering but checked his pad where he wrote it down and promptly apologized. Unfortunately the entrees and sides came out first, then the crab cake, so mishap but the remainder of the evening concluded just fine. Today we tried Larkins in their new location. When I walked in I saw the waiter that waited on us the last time we visited Larkins in their old location. I said..."Hi! I think you waited on us at the old spot..."! She said "Yes! It was you, your husband and three young men with you the last time"! I said...correct"! Terri was so friendly and helpful. While we waited on our food, she gave me a short tour of the restaurant and we enjoyed a great conversation. This visit included myself, my husband and my son. We were there for brunch so my husband and I ordered Roasted Chicken with rice and we split an order of Brussels Sprouts. My son ordered the French Toast, Potatoes and Bacon. It was all very yummy!! I helped my son eat his food because he had a lot of food!! The staff was very friendly and helpful. Terri greeted us and stopped by to chat a couple of times but Bill was our regular waiter this time. The manager was present and came by to check on us. One thing that happened that I thought was great is the fact that both Bill and Terri saw that my son was on crutches and took time to chat with him about what happened and the. Wished him well and a speedy recovery. My son decided that he was going to bring a date to Larkins and Terri told him to ask for her when he does. Although I have lived in Greenville for decades, this visit to Larkin's at lunch was my first visit. We were right at noon on a Monday. There were only a handful of people seated; I counted 12. It was surprisingly not busy. The hostess was Grace and she did an outstanding job and I believe she was training a young man, Nathan, also very hospitable. The darker room and the coolness was a welcomed experience from the 95 degree bright sunlit day. So, first impressions were all good. The menu was surprisingly light for lunch options, in my opinion. Yes there were several salads, and several brunch options, but not very many sandwiches offered. There were also several "heavier" dinner type options. So the three of us settled on the Buttermilk Battered Fried Chicken Sandwich. This comes with fruit or fries. The sandwich is on a brioche bun with a layer of sweet pepper jam on the bottom half and then a large portion fried chicken breast topped with lettuce, tomato and Napa jalapeno slaw. It had to be eaten with a knife and fork because the slaw dripped sauce excessively from the sandwich. The chicken was a little dry, like many chicken breast sandwiches. I did not pick up any of the jalapeno flavor, nor was there white cheddar or bacon on the sandwich as noted on the menu. The fries were excellent and cut in a thinner size (ala McDonald's size) and very crisp, seasoned well and a large portion. We had to wait after ordering for 20-25 minutes which put us at a long lunch. The wait was surprising since the restaurant was not busy and it was prime lunch hour, so I would have assumed there was pre-prep already done. Generally, this is a comfortable location for a business lunch. The food was "okay" but not living up to the description. I would come back, but not on a special trip, just if it were convenient. read more

We made them for the patio a couple of weeks in advance, hoping for more warm weather that we were having at the time, but it ended up being cold (typical March!) Once we entered the plastic closed-in patio we wished we had made reservations for inside. Although a nice setting when it is open, when closed it is loud and the atmosphere leaves much to be desired. They are currently offering a monthly prix fixe menu representing food from different countries, and this month is Brazilian. The chicken croquet appetizer and passionfruit mousse dessert were amazing, but the entree steak was chewy and fell flat in flavor. Overall the dish was dry, but more fresh tomato salsa would help. Came here with a work group of about 10 people and the service was excellent, the server was on top of everything. We had a limited menu for our group, but it was clearly a good selection of what the offer. The salad I got had a great dressing and cheese, just the right amount of everything. My main course was a steak cooked exactly medium, just what I expected. It had a great, fresh taste and they gave a decent portion that didn't leave me hungry. Top quality cheesecake, not the best I've had but still up to par. The atmosphere was upscale and relaxing, perfect for our group dinner. Cold food AND I contracted norovirus! Norovirus is passed through food and beverage contact with saliva or fecal matter (typically under the nails of the infected person). I had not been around anyone in 5 days prior to my visit, and norovirus has a 12-48 hour incubation period and in this time frame, Larkin's is the only location I have been to outside of my home. The staff was otherwise courteous. The cold food was just average, but plating was pretty. Overall, I'm greatly disappointed with my experience as I was infected with a virus. Otherwise, I would have given 3 stars. I hope everyone else has a much more pleasant experience, but I myself will not be returning. read more

I do want to first mention that our waiter was excellent. Very attentive and served our party well. However, our food experience was far from stellar for such a restaurant. My rack-of-lamb was supposed to be medium-rare but arrived well-done to medium. Had to be sent back. In addition, when the lamb came out for the second time, I had asked for no curry/okra on it, but instead the lamb was covered with a sauce that completely overwhelmed the flavor of the lamb. Another member of our party ordered the prime ribeye and the vegetables were supposed to be plated on the side but instead the ribeye was served on top of the vegetables (mashed potatoes) which affected its taste. For dessert, we wanted the cheesecake and it was supposed to be rimmed with crushed oreo cookie but instead was rimmed with peppermint, which we didn't enjoy and didn't eat. Finally, the manager came over and only offered $30 off our very expensive meal (in addition, to not charging for the cheesecake) for the inconvenience, which was disappointing and is the reason I won't be dining here again. We went for Valentine's Day which was a special prix fixe menu with a hefty price tag. So we knew we were in for big bill which was fine. The food was just fine, not outstanding, but the service was awful. We had two servers who were tag teaming and it just felt like they were trying to rush us out every step of the way and there was also just a lot of mishaps. We were told they would bring some bread to the table while we waited for our food and they never brought it so I asked for it TWICE before it finally came. It was clear that they'd forgotten, not that the kitchen was behind. There were no forks on the table when we arrived but there were butter knives? They had to bring out utensils multiple times bc they forgot to bring a knife or a fork. The worst was they kept trying to take our food when we clearly still eating it- multiple times for multiple courses. It was weird. I believe our servers name was Brandon and he was wonderful! He was very knowledgeable and helpful about the menu and making suggestions. We ordered the herb chicken breast and the ribeye. The ribeye was amazing! Super flavorful and tender. The chicken was cooked well and flavorful. The reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because there was another server around and I had asked her if the perloo rice had bell peppers in it and she said no that there are barely any vegetables. When I received it, there were loads of bell pepper slices so I was picking around that. The other reason is personal preference. I do not like a mayo heavy caesar dressing and their caesar dressing is pretty mayo heavy. The service was great though! Faint music playing in the background, dimmed lighting, we had a view of the street so that was nice to look around. The picture is the Caesar salad that comes with anchovies on top!
