I never even knew Laut was here. A friend and I were casually walking down 17th Street and I noticed on the windows that it said "Thai, Singaporean, Malaysian". I'm always a skeptic of fusion or places that have more than one kind of cuisine on the menu, but it looked pretty well reviewed--with a MIchelin mention--plus, I'm always on the lookout for authentic Malaysian/Singaporean food, so we decided to give it a shot. The space is laid back and well appointed. The staff friendly. And I have to admit the food wasn't bad. I had the Curry Laksa which really should just be called Singapore Laksa. The soupy base was not bad at all. It had the requisite amount of chili and coconut milk. But they also add fresh mint leaves. While it looks great as a garnish, I think most purists probably wouldn't want that subtle hint of mint in their laksa. But, still the soup was pretty good, as were the thin rice noodles. Instead of sliced fish cake, they use fish balls. Also present were soft pieces of tofu, shrimp (you have your choice of meat), string beans and carrots. These latter two items are not typically in Singapore Laksa and I imagine are there more because they add color to the dish. Noticeably absent, in addition to the fish cakes are squid and a hard-boiled egg. While I"d much prefer the dish without the mint, carrots and string beans, I think it is tasty and a pretty decent attempt at authentic laksa in a neighborhood otherwise devoid of SIngaporean and Malaysian cuisine. My friend had the Prawn Mee which also was pretty good and I'd stay more authentic than the Curry Laksa. The broth had a great subtle fishy finish, the noodles were great and it did have half of a hard-boiled egg in it. Other reviews do remark about it being over priced. I have to agree. Dishes like laksa, Char Kway Teow and Hainan Chicken should not be $12. These dishes at Taste Good in Elmhurst cost between $5 and $6 and are jam-packed with multiple types of seafood and are as authentic as you're going to find in NY. For example, Laut's Char Kway Teow only comes with one choice of meat. In Taste Good's (and at any hawker stall in Singapore) it is served with shrimp,sliced fish cakes, chinese sausage, and squid (and in Singapore they also always add include cockles). BUT, that said, Taste Good is not located in a high rent area like Laut. So, I guess, you gotta understand that going by here, in addition to the food, you're paying for Laut's probably absurd monthly rent. And you know, that's fine. While not totally authentic, it still is well-prepared, nicely presented and served in a relaxed nicely-appointed restaurant. Overall, it's great to see decent Malaysian and Singaporean food being served outside of Chinatown, Elmhurst or Flushing. In my book, definitely A-OK. read more

Got here exactly at 12PM just as the lunch time rush was starting. My gf and I were blown away by the service, the food and drinks, and the overall experience here. The food was awesome dinned with a few friends . enjoyed several appetizers and an amazing entree which consisted of the red snapper clay pot, steam veggie dumplings, and pancake which aren't typical pancakes with amazing curry sauce as the dip amongst other dishes. Not really sure how this place got a Michelin star and why people rave about it... Went in with very high expectations and left extremely disappointed. Food: mediocre - could have gotten a better meal at my usual Thai take out place. The Drunk Man was overly greasy and tasteless. Service: HORRIBLE - the server got both orders wrong, did not come by to pick up the empty appetizer plates for a good 35 minutes after serving our entrees, was left with an empty water glass for at least 30 minutes, and the dessert took 45 minutes after the entree to come out. Came here for lunch. Nice interior - we kept talking about the exposed brick wall... I was really excited about finding a thai place so close to the office (as I just relocated from Newark where there is AMAZING thai) but I was met with disappointment. I really hate it when people serve me red curry like the kind I make at home (red curry paste + coconut milk... kinda thick and too coconutty) this place did just that. I was surprised that we were seated so quickly considering that it was packed. The reason for this is the fast turnover of customers. I think the decor was nice but it was too dark to really see it. I think we had fun but we were seated too close to the table next to us for me to hear very well.I think the food was good but honestly we were out of there in approx 20 minutes. The decor is pretty cool, I especially like how they chalked up the barren red brick wall. However, the food was....less than "authentic". Drunken noodles and pad thai were fine (although overpriced, $15 for chicken pad thai...) Now the Hainanese chicken was just a sheer disgrace. I made a reservation a few weeks ago for 4pm on a Sunday; they were very pleasant on the phone. When I arrived with my friends, the restaurant was less than half full. We were seated quickly and given menus, but the waiters never came back! Seriously, we waited over ten minutes, no one ever came back to even give us water. And it's a small space, you couldn't miss us. They seemed more concerned with getting food orders out and seemed to forget about us. We just walked out. I haven't been to Laut since they changed hands about 3 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised when I went there a month ago and then a couple weeks later. Being a native of Singapore I was really excited to see things on the menu that I haven't eaten in almost 40 years. I tried the Murtabak. It was really quite good. The curry dipping sauce has a little bit of heat in it but that's the way I like it. The dish is equally as good without the dipping sauce. I then had the Curry Laksa with shrimp and it's as wonderful as I remember it. Also spicy. There are a lot of things on the menu that aren't spicy if that's the way you want to go. I plan on visiting frequently to try other things on the menu. This has turned out to be one of the my favorite restaurants in NYC. A little crowded at times so you might have a bit of a wait for a table. read more

This is a new place I just 'discovered' on 17th street. As far as I can tell, it's unmarked, so it's a little hard to find -- but it's next to Subway sandwiches. I actually really like this place! The Union Square/Flatiron district is in dire need of better Asian food, and this one is a great newcomer. I've only been there twice so far -- first time I got the Pad Thai and the Basil Fried Rice lunch specials ($10 a dish -- not actually cheaper than the regular menu). The pad thai was just so-so but not bad; the fried rice, though, was awesome! Great flavor, not stale. The second time I went, I got the Coconut Rice (nasi lemak) without knowing what it was. I was pleasantly surprised -- close in style to a Korean lunchbox, it has several sides surrounding steamed coconut rice. Very tasty flavors. So far, I would choose this place, as far as flavor, over the famous Spice restaurants. I'd recommend this place for lunch (or even dinner -- a nice interior). And I, for sure, will be back to try some other dishes. (It loses a star for being on the slightly pricey end at lunchtime, even for New York.) read more

Was in on a Groupon for four so brought some close friends for an intimate birthday celebration for one of them. Gave 1 star because BEFORE we were even finished calculating the tip, the maitre'd rushed the table babbling at the top of his lungs about how we MUST tip on the bill total, not the discount!!! Excuse me? We didn't ask for change and were getting ready to add more money when they returned with the receipt on the tray! This guy completely ruined our night! I've NEVER had this happen before, I was completely affronted with this ridiculously rude man!!! BTW - the food was good if u like heavily spiced hot dishes (yes I've had great Malaysian & Thai before and this was overly spiced). The coconut juice smelled like "feet" and had seriously mushy pieces of coconut in it - pass! Service was lax; one appetizer was suggested to have the sauce on the side and then she brought it totally sauce anyway (?!), then they brought a birthday ice cream for my friend and totally forgot the rest of ours! This was hands down the best Thai I have ever eaten! We had to wait about 10 minutes on a Monday night to sit which wasn't a problem for us, but I can only imagine how crowded it gets on the weekend. They had so many vegetarian options and not just boring veggie options ie: lettuce and tomato! I highly recommend any of the vegetarian coconut curry sauces with potatoes, peanuts and broccoli. Had Green Curry from here before (dined in) which was fine. This time ordered on seamless at 8:20 PM. Didn't get food until 9:50 PM. Already upset. Drunk Man Noodle with Beef = 4 thin slices of tender but flavorless beef with noodles that were bland and a few slices of onion and peppers and bamboo shoots. Like a quarter of a scrambled egg. For $15. Worst thing is, how does Drunk Man noodle come out bland? The recipe usually calls for dousing ingredients in chili-bean sauce. Tom Yum Noodle with Tofu/Veg = few basically raw veggies, two pieces of completely average tofu. Soup and noodles were fine. Overall they seem really stingy with ingredients. It was not as I expected i went just 2 nights ago with my friends who is just here for labor day weekend it is on her bucket list...I been to other restaurants for this kind of food...and the ones we ordered usually i have that in different places...food is mediocre decor is ok not much room to eat if you order more...we have no reservation we just went in..so we are placed to sit in the bar...which is not really I want to...I observe that there are some tables are vacant after 5 minutes we walk in and still free an hour after..The male waiter can offer it to us and says that we can only have an hour on that table...if it is me who been exposed to diff kind of fine and street dining will just leave and explore the other places ..This is NEW YORK...you can explore diff kinds but my friend's mind is set so I just kind of ok...but really did not enjoy my first experience to this place..Do not order their soft shell crab it is not good as well the portions...Even roti canai is disappointing...if not with my out of town friends I just walk away ..And that waiter said if you want you need to reserve a day ahead. Out of my head ...I go to CIA in upstate and even their french restaurant before...they can make a room and suggestion...The servers are not much attentive...so do you even expect us to give 18% and up tip...No way in my vocabulary . Stumbled upon this place walking around Union Square. It is truly a gem. My mom and I were visiting from out of town and we went there for dinner one night and came back for lunch the next day. I judge Malaysian restaurants by how well they make asam laksa. I tried it. it was OK but a lil disappointing. I wish it had chunks of sardines in there, used actual lai fun like it advertised on the menu, and it wasn't jalapenos that was making the broth spicy. I also tried the roti tisu with milo powder sprinkled on it. The roti tisu needs a bit more sugar on it and Milo powder isnt exactly a great idea. There's the essense of chocolate but its ultimately bitter to the taste. Bitter and the salty butter don't go well together. I do give props for being able to pull off the crispy and thin texture though. Making roti tisu is a specialty and its not easy so I do appreciate that. read more

After writing about my Terrible experience at Laut and their Groupon deal that ripped me off I got the following email from them. "Dear Sir, Our groupon portions are exactly the size of our regular portions and before stating the fact that you were ripped off in public you should make it a point to read your groupon deal properly. It is an upto value, which is a fact: If you would have chosen to have the Ikan chili Garang with is flounder fillet regularly priced at $30 times 2 = 60 two appetizer: 18 two dessert: 14 upto 92 dollars. If you choose to eat two pad thai's that is your decision. The last thing on our mind is to cut the hand that feeds us. Thank you" I'm going to address a few things about his response. 1) his bad attitude toward pleasing customers is very clear 2) groupon is utilized by businesses to gain new clients. You certainly won't do that by making most the choices on the menu a ripoff for the money. As a customer I do not expect that I would have 1 and only 1 choice(flounder) that would make it a value. 3) $14 for dessert....thanks for the oh so crappy choice of either a scoop of plain vanilla ice cream, or a scoop of sticky rice. Yeah...that was a value alright. 4) my portion was most definitely smaller than the person next to me. Even if it wasn't intentional to give a smaller portion to Groupon customers, the fact remains that it was significantly smaller. I like most people will assume it was intentional. 5) there are other reviewers on yelp angry about their groupon deal. Logic stands to reason that not everyone posts a review, so just imagine how many more are angry but didn't write. Plain and simple....I feel ripped off by you. It's called bait and switch. You lure people in with the promise of a bargain, then once I pay for it I find out it's not actually the bargain you made it seem. You had an opportunity to gain customers, but you blew it. I was once a faithful customer of this place, but the poor customer service/even-worsening quality has prompted me towards this, a 2-star rating for the place. As of the quality, the removal of a michelin star says it all, plus my only dinner venture there was totally screwed (i ordered sweet and sour fish, overcooked and the amount was far from enough, cost me $20, was ridiculous). As for CS, I ordered my lunch online and been waiting for 90 mins only got a phone call asking me to pick up, and it turned out to be somebody else's lunch, they DIDNT cook my lunch due to a ridiculous mistake. This is a not the atitude expected for a long-established business in the hood. I know people will continue go to this place and I know it will thrive probably thanks to the lunch demand. VEGETARIANS BEWARE! We went there for dinner last night, party of 4, we ordered 3 mains and told our server we wanted it with the veggie and tofu option. We were very clear that we wanted vegetarian but the pad Thai was cooked in fish oil when we asked the server he said that's how it's done. The chilli Hakka fry(we asked for the veg option) was actually chicken and when we called the server he took it back by then we were so turned off that we could not eat anymore. The server was extremely rude and did not apologise. We are vegetarians and this was offensive. We are never going back and want to warn all vegetarians to stay away. read more
