Heard about new Layang2 through a M'sian forum and had to check it out. Liked the one in Saratoga but this is much closer. Was pleasantly surprised to see menu has grown significantly. Particularly pleasing is the array of vegetarian selections! Not only is there an extensive vege section, with assortment of vege (faux) chicken and beef (which remind me of good buddhist restaurants in M'sia), but a lot of regular dishes which can also be converted to vege options too. Highly recommend for vegans and vegetarians. Soon after the starters of poh-piah and roti canai (which were satisfying) came out, the entrees followed -- very quick service! Got a bunch of very spicy prawn mee, char kuay teow, hokkien mee etc. Spiciness was spot on for the hard-core. Variety and extensiveness of the menu with core m'sian fare was welcome, except that petai belacan is no longer served -- probably too hard to get petais on a regular basis here! After that, we were so full, but we decided to order a few more items to go (including some vege chick. & beef dishes), and enjoyed those the following days. Prices were very reasonable for the huge portions. Staff is unusually friendly and attentive for this type of joint. Typically, we expect the "soup-nazi" treatment from similar establishments but here they were very attentive, personable and polite. The food here was good but I don't think I would come back to this location due to the fact that after lunch my coworkers and I all had a slight case of food poisoning. I should have know when I sat down and looked at my plate the utensils and it was clearly not clean. I asked the waiter for a new plate and spoon and when he came back, he gave me a new plate but another dirty spoon. So I ended up using my chopsticks whole time. We ordered about five dishes for three people. The only thing I remember us ordering that day was the deep fried taro basket filled with seafood and veggies. That dish was very fulfilling and delicious because it had crunchy veggies and chunks of scallops, cuttle fish, shrimp sautéed in some kind of sauce. Came here on Mother's Day for lunch after house hunting. The husband and I haven't had Malaysian food for years and decided to come here. We were wow by how spacious it is here and how attentive the staff was. We were given a corner table and we were worried we would be forgotten. A staff would frequently walk down the isle to make sure everything is okay. Roti - a must. good for two to share but if you have more than 2, I would order another Clay Pot Princess Tofu - after going through all the photos of yelp we realized the princess tofu was one of the must order dishes. It is prepared three different ways. It was the highlight of our meal Belacan Pearl Mee - Growing up my neighbor's mom made something similar to this dish that I miss dearly so we ordered this. Small flour noodles thats stir fried. It was okay. My neighbor's mom's dish was better. Two bathrooms in the back with a big private mall lot. It can get busy. A great malaysian restaurant. My favorite is satay chicken and mee goreng. The satay chicken is marinated before they grilled it so it has very deep flavor and the peanut sauce is very good. Mee goreng is the best! However, sometimes they skimped on the number of prawn. The nasi lemak is just ok. I had once with chicken and once with beef rendang - i prefer the later. Ice kacang dessert is good too - not too sweet but creamy. We usually came there around 3pm on Sunday after church and the service was slow although one time there was just 2 tables. On the last visit, one of the servers told us that during that time, they cleaned the kitchen so the cooking was delayed a bit. So, avoid Sunday around 3-4pm if you're really hungry. read more

Amazing food and attentive service. Came here on a Weds night with my two girls and enjoyed a wonderful dinner. I cant believe i have never thought to eat here. I love Malaysian food, always pass by here but didnt think to eat here till i saw this on yelp. We started off with the roti canai and devoured it. I ordered one for each of us. So light, crunchy, and flaky with a hint of sweetness. The curry sauce that accompanied it was also perfect. For entrees we ordered: Sizzling beef... yummy. Came out piping & sizzling on a hot plate. Cant go wrong with this dish. Princess tofu in a claypot. I inhaled this. The tofu was fried on the outside and soft n silky on the inside. It was mixed with shrimp, calamari, and vegi's in this light egg white sauce. Sooooo goood! Last entree was the hokkien mee. It was thick yellow noodle stirfried in a slightly thick slightly sweet sauce with chicken and shrimp with some bok choy. This was also good. The noodles were chewy and had a nice bite. Sauce complemented it well. Since i was with my girls, i ordered everything mild but got their house spicy sauce on the side.. it was spiiicey and gave my food a nice kick. 1 order of coconut rice & hainan rice. Nearly two years later, I wanted to update my review of Layang Layang; it still remains one of my favorite spots in Milpitas. As compared to my review two years ago, the restaurant's food and service have remained consistently good. The service here reminds me of a Nascar pitstop; several waiters have the water and order before you can even start a conversation--I personally like this quick service a lot. My old favorite, the Murtabak, is still tasty as heck and the sizzling beef continues to impress. There's usually always extra food to take home due to the generous portions. Had a chance to check out location #2 in the huge strip mall off Calaveras. Friend and I arrived right when dinnertime started, so we had this huge restaurant to ourselves for most of the time. It is definitley larger than the Cupertino location, so I really appreciate the space. Service was great too, but then again, it was just us! Of course we got the roti canai, my usual chow kueh tao, and a new item, kari leaf chicken. Our food came out quickly, and of course I needed a side of that spicy sauce that I always regret later. The roti canai...we got a lame piece. That's where the minus star comes into place. It was really thin and small. Also, it's more expensive than what I remember paying at the Cupertino location. Chow kueh tao tasted great, just like the other location and the kari leaf chicken was yummy! Perfectly fried, with handful of veggies like bell peppers and onions, and in a japanese like spicy curry sauce. As with all lunch crowds, the place was pretty packed by noon and there was a wait outside the door about 4 parties deep. My favorite Malaysia cuisine in the Bay! I'm glad there is quality Southeastern style foods that's not extremely expensive. Orders: Mee Goreng - My absolute favorite dish from there. I can't eat enough of their sweet and spicy cooked noodles. It always hits with a truck load of mixed flavors that leaves me wanting more. The heat from the sauce can be sometimes overwhelming so I'd recommend starting with a medium spicy cooked first. Adding lime to the noodles simply added into the huge flavor pot. The tofu and shrimp were always well cooked and has a nice contrasting texture to the soft noodles. Wonton Mee - Served in 2 pieces (wonton soup and noodles separately), this style dish really shows their authenticity with Malaysian food. The soup was full of flavor and complimented well with the noodles, no complaints there. The noodles were amazing! It really reminded me of my homeland and the best street style food we can buy there. Perfectly cooked pork (cha shao) had a tender yet hard texture where the outsides were seasoned very well. Definitely a must try here. Hokkien Mee - Another to-go dish for my group. The dark sauce with thick style noodles. The taste of this dish is hard to explain in words, but is like a sweet and savory (dark soya) sauce mixed with quality chicken pieces. The service there was quality. The waiters were super nice and always stayed vigilant if any customer needed anything. It impresses me that they used 3 different noodles for the three dishes showing the amount of care they put into their food to match Malaysia cuisines. My only complaint would be asking them to remove the tails of the shrimps, but that's really a preference. A while ago, their portion sizes were varying dependent on who cooks the dishes. Sometimes we would get dishes where we are full to the brim while other times we would still be craving for more. However, this issue hasn't occurred in a while (1+ years) with me visiting it several times but a problem to keep in the back of your head. This place is probably a must try if one is looking for South Eastern foods. read more

My Hawaiian friends took me here for a wonderful night out before their babymoon and really showed me the ropes of Malaysian cuisine. They are much better at dining out than me, so I trust all the food they like. We got in before the dinner rush and, after much needed catch up time, we ordered a spread of fun dishes. Basically all the photos in the menu. They are surefire hits. The sauces are something else, and if you like spicy food, this is the place for you! I've taken a few of my carnivore friends here and have ordered the vegetarian beef entrees for them.. they enjoyed it very much. Their kangkung has to be my top dish, cooked perfectly every time. I lalalove vegetables. Can't say much about the meat nor seafood. I've never ordered it. I have ordered their side of coconut rice to pair with my entrees.. I don't really recommend it. It really effs with your palette. In my opinion it is too sweet for my liking. If you're eating it with more flavorful entrees, it just messes up everything. Dessert: go for it!! I'd rate this place a 3.5, but I'll round up. I like how friendly the employees are and how wide the menu is. My absolute favorite dish is the Princess Tofu. The regular version comes with seafood, but they have a vegetarian option as well. If you're not a vegetarian, I'd get the regular Princess Tofu. The Roti Canai is solid too. Their fried ice cream with banana is also good, but sometimes they don't have it. Delicious! Came here with some coworkers on a whim due to another restaurant nearby being closed for the day. Honestly everything we ordered was very tasty. The best dishes was actually non-meat. Their princess tofu were outstanding! The soft tofu glazed in some savory sweet sauce in combination to the white rice was worth the trip to Milpitas. We ordered fried fish with sambal sauce, Hainese chicken, stirred fried greens in sambal, and coffee ribs (yes you heard that right). It didn't disappoint. You must ask for sides of sambal. Every single table was filled and there were 3 or 4 groups waiting in line. So, I ordered the seafood sarang and I had my hopes up for this plate because of all the reviews I read...unfortunately it did not live up to the hype. Not that it wasn't good, it definitely was good...just not amazing. The seafood sauce was very typical and nothing special...so it just didn't stand out to me. If the sauce was more interesting or flavored, I probably would like it more. Also, there was very little seafood, it was mostly vegetables. :\ But the taro nest was really cool! I like it, but it made me so full! I couldn't even finish my meal. I also ordered the roti canai, and that was sooo good! I definitely recommend it if you come here. :] The curry side dipping sauce was good with the roti. I also tried my friend's roti buddhist, which was also delicious. Princess Tofu. That has got to be one of my favorite dishes! I don't know how they make it but the tofu is silky and tastes like a custard. The gravy on top is perfect on top of their coconut rice.They include a generous amount of veggies and seafood in the dish. I've also had their garlic eggplant here. It's a huge plate of eggplant. Their version of "pad see ew" was ok. I expected it to be eggier. There is a $15 or $20 minimum credit card charge. Oh yeah, they are closed on Mondays! I've heard about this place for a while now. My girlfriend was referred to this place by multiple coworkers. So we finally decided to check it out. The reviews here are on point, and this place is legit. It's a little hard to find.(the same parking lot as Paris Baguette) We have been here twice in the past week now. It's becoming our Friday night dinner spot. We have been seated promptly both times. I guess we are just getting lucky, as the rest of the place was pretty full. The service a great. Once we ordered, the food came out crazy fast. Our waters were always full. The food was amazing. I think my favorite is this mango chicken dish that comes in a taro bowl. They do a very basic roti with a curry sauce that isn't very interesting, yet something about it is a fan favorite. One of the veggies (ong-choy?) was very, very intense in dried fish or dried shrimp... would've been good if we had rice, but for some reason Layang Layang is a bit skimpy with it. Nasi lemak and several mixed-veggie type dishes were serviceable; the coffee ribs and the taro seafood mixed veggie were actually quite decent, possibly even good. This place is bland enough in execution that even 3* feels generous, but at the same time, they didn't actually seem bad enough to warranty a lower rating than that. read more

The pineapple chicken fried rice dish was small but the chicken was very tender and flavorful. 20 dollars for a few shrimps and a plain papaya salad with sweet and sour sauce were a bit pricey. The mango chicken was salty and there were no much of anything in this dish. The service is awesome as everyone comes with a smile. Wish the food arrived quickly though. When I went I ordered the Me Goreng which is an Indian style stir-fried noodle with their special sauce, peanuts, shrimp, bean sprouts, and egg. Also, I ordered an appetizer their satay beef which is served on wooden skewers with a side of peanut sauce. Both dishes were extremely flavorful and well done. You can tell that they were seasoned to perfection. My only complaint with this restaurant is that the service was not the best. (That is why I'm knocking off one star.) It took a while for the food to get served and the waiter seemed indifferent to everything. They delivered on the good food and that is what mostly mattered to me.
