3.5 *** rounded up to 4 **** The restaurant is much bigger than it looks like from the outside. Parking was not an issue with plenty of spaces available in the plaza. The ambiance inside was dim and I found the decor to be a bit strange; I felt like I was dining at someone's grandmas house. Service was good, the staff were eager to take our order and were helpful and polite. They also checked on us regularly without being intrusive. #MalasyanEats: ~ 10. Spicy Crispy Calamari Strips - 3.5/5 Your standard Fried Calamari. I thought the Calamari could be fired a bit longer for a better crisp. ~ 115. Mee Goreng Fried Noodle - 4/5 We opted to try something different. Indian style stir fried noodles with shrimp, tomato, bean sprouts, egg, vegetables and ground peanuts in some sort of sauce. Tasty without being overly spicy. DESSERT: ~ 170. Ice Kacang - 4/5 Ummm...this thing was much bigger than we anticipated. Not as fine as Snow or Hawaiian Shaved Ice, but very tasty. Shaved ice with red bean, sweet corn, plum seeds, jelly served with red rose syrup, and condensed milk. Not too sweet either. I did find it strange that they started putting up chairs on the tables cleaning up around 7:45 on a Sunday evening when they close at 8:30. Almost like they were giving customers a hint to leave... that was weird! I'd come back and try other items on the menu.
Was in search of malaysian food and came upon this place. Very packed when we went around 1pm on a sunday. Sadly they did not have the chicken and rice dish which is what we came here for. The roti was a bit too thin and flaky for my liking and wish there was a thicker curry sauce. Nasi Lemak lacked in flavor and was just mild in all tastes. Chow kueh tow was almost like pad thai and was salty.
Pleasant surprises around every corner at Layang Layang! Walking in the first time you won't know what to think but don't worry, never had a bad dish here. The ambiance isn't anything spectacular but the service is always quick and friendly. I don't know where the recipes come from but they feel passed down through generations. Every item is a story in taste. Love Layang Layang
my in laws introduced me to this Malaysian spot, and wow their food is amazing. As someone who loves eating chinese, thai and indian food. Im shocked that I never tried Malaysian. They basically offer similar features and ways of other cuisines, so when trying their food, it felt very comforting and delicious. My favorite right now is their coffee ribs, and their migoren noodles, but all of their dishes are amazing!
After we landed in San jose, we tried this Malaysian restaurant because we were in the mood for hainamese chicken rice. Parking: plenty free shared retail parking Reservation: just walk in. Big space for small and big group. Restrooms: singles women and men restroom. Once we were seated, we ordered: Nasi lemak Char thaw we Roti canai Kangkung blachan Overall food is ok. Roti Canada is too crispy and thin, the curry sauce just plain sauce no potato. The coconut rice on nasi lemak could be use more coconut milk. Beef is great, juicy and tender. Chaw thaw we could use more eggs and better yet, flat wide noddle instead thin thai style noddle. Service is fast and nice.
Came here on a busy Friday night around 7pm, and Layang-Layang was hopping! Despite the crowd, the service was impressively attentive and efficient. We were really pleased with how quickly our food arrived--all dishes were on our table in under 15 minutes! Our water glasses were also consistently refilled, which is always a plus. Since we weren't super hungry, we shared the Char Kway Teow and the Kangkung Belacan. The Char Kway Teow was delicious, with a good depth of flavor and sizable shrimp. The Kangkung Belacan was also satisfying; the kangkung leaves were tender, and the belacan (shrimp paste) was well-balanced and not overpowering.
Love this place with a tropical vibe, excellent attentive service, and fantastic Malaysian food!! I always have a hard time ordering because the menu is so long and has so many good options, with vegetarian options are plenty and while marked. We started with tofu satay-- crispy tofu, stuffed with cabbage and smothered in a amazing peanut sauce-- yummm!!! I ordered the sizzling princess tofu-- it arrived at the table, not sure if me or the dish was bubbling more with delight! The tofu in this dish is eggy and flavorful-- I know I can't recreate this at home so it is special. My husband enjoyed his noodles-- and we even enjoyed the leftovers a day later! Plenty of plaza parking. Good for groups. No outdoor seating. We did not have to wait at 8pm on a Saturday night.
Malaysian food is hard to come by in the US so I was keen to try this restaurant. I ordered a Char Kwai Tiew and Roti. The Char Kwai Tiew was very good with a good "wok hei" though a little small for the price ($19.50). That said, eating out these days is expensive everywhere with inflation. The roti was good. They have an extensive menu and I'd like to come back and try their Princess tofu and which is made in house and some of their other dishes. Service was friendly and efficient.
this was a pretty underwhelming experience. ordered the hainan chicken but it was pretty flavorless. usually i like the rice to have more flavor. sauce options weren't that good. i have had much better hainan chicken. also my chicken was sooooo boney. every bite i had to rip my chicken apart and spit out the bone. pretty disappointing. typically you would want a more meaty chicken for this type of dish.
This was the first time I dined at Layang Layang and had a wonderful experience. The staff were so incredibly nice and checked up on us frequently. The menu is a bit daunting but I loved everything we got. The seafood chow fung, fried fish, calamari, and roti. The fried items were perfectly crispy. I brought home the leftovers for my husband to try, and although soggy, he said the flavors were great. I'm super excited to come back and try other items!
I've been here twice. I'd give 3.5 stars. Service here is really nice and food comes out fast but the dishes are either super hit or super miss. It's never crowded when I've gone and there's a lot of space to sit. I got the roti canai which was really good - not too oily and curry was spicy. I actually think this was so good it could bring my review up to a 4. Must try. I also got the princess tofu (veg). This is house made egg tofu and I love egg tofu and the crispiness was done really well but I didn't like the sauce that it came with at all. I ended up just eating the tofu and not the curry/sauce. Also even at spicy the flavor was kinda off and not spicy. I've also tried the pad thai - this was fine it tasted good 4/5. I got the malaysian iced tea - it's mainly sweetened black tea with milk.. it was strong but overall just tasted like black tea, I would skip. I do like how extensive the menu is. so I would consider coming back here to try other things but unsure if I would go out of my way
I ate here with my family recently. It was the first time we've been here in many years and I was worried that the quality of the food wouldn't be the same. I'm glad to say that my worries were pointless! We ordered nasi lemak, char kway teow, and wonton mee; these were from the lunch special menu so I think the items were slightly cheaper than the regular menu. All items were very flavorful. I took my mom here for an early Mother's Day. She's from Malaysia and she likes this place. The only other Malaysian restaurant she went to was Banana Leaf and of course that place isn't that good. * Chicken Satay - $15.50 for 5 pieces of skewers with a side of peanut sauce and diced cucumber and onion. I felt it was delicious but she said it wasn't that great. I felt she was critical of the sauce and felt it wasn't that much better than peanut butter. * Spicy Crispy Calamari Strips - $17.50 - came with sautéed red and green peppers. That sauce had a great kick! My mom loved this! * Mee Siam - $17.50 - My mom said this wasn't authentic and not even close to Mee Siam. See my picture. * Nami Lemak - $18.50 - On point! She loved this. * Princess Tofu - $21.50 came with 6 pieces of fried silky tofu and some baby corn, carrot, mushrooms, shrimp, and calamari. I thought this was a little bit pricey for what it was compared to Chinese Braised Tofu with seafood and mushrooms. My mom liked this. read more
Ordered the Princess Tofu, Large tomyum soup, Hokkien mi, Thai chicken, Malaysian fried rice, and Ying Yong noodle, crispy calamari. This is my family's usual go-to order for a party of 6, we usually finish everything and leave with little to-go boxes. Today was an exception though, everything was just so salty, especially the hokkien mi. We were quite disappointed, we ordered side bowls of steamed white rice to help balance out the saltiness. The Thai chicken was nice and crispy, the calamari sauce is tongue-numbing spicy, so be ware! read more
Went at the end of dinner shift on a Friday. No crowd inside. Since there's not much Malaysian food here in the Bay, I'll preface this review by saying I have not had much Malay cuisine so I'll have to surf on pure vibes. GREAT!: Nasi Lemak w/ beef rendang - this dish is a first for me, and it's very interestingly laid out with all the ingredients separated. Am I supposed to mix them on the dish? Beef Rendang was very tasty and super tender. The sambal was fragrant and delicious. All the ingredients combined very well together. I ordered this one with no peanuts, but I'm certain a peanut enjoyer would have an even better experience! Good: Roti Canai - the thin curry sauce is so delicious. I wish the roti could be more absorbent as It doesn't pick up the curry well. Good appetizer to wet the whistle though. Tom Yam Chicken - The flavor is of tom yum, but it's a little too sweet and sour for my taste. The chicken and vegetables are cooked really well. Definitely get a spare rice with this one. Overall I was very pleased with my experience. Spicy dishes were definitely not "Thai" levels of spicy, which I didn't know what to expect. The price of each dish is a bit on the higher side here so beware. Would come back and try other items on their huge menu! Service was good. read more

I enjoy Malaysian cuisine and have been here multiple times over the past few years. Though I avoid pad Thai , I decided to get it this time around. We also got some plates of roti canai for the kids. The roti canai is easily one of the best in the bayarea. Though the roti itself was nondescript, the gravy was excellent, lusciously silky and absolutely delicious. The pad Thai was bad, it was covered by a bed of chopped up iceberg lettuce and mung bean sprouts. The noodles lying underneath were broken up badly. read more

unfortunately hainan chicken was overcooked (i've made better texture at home) and asam laksa was about 70% there in terms of flavor. malaysian food is hard to find but this didn't hit the spot. read more

I went to this restaurant after a long time I was a regular customer at their San Jose branch but sadly they shut down, but I was seriously craving their food so decided to go to Milpitas as I was craving Malaysian food & to my surprise the food tasted as good as it tasted then. We ordered our favorite sarang kung pao chicken the basil chicken & the roti canai & it all tasted so good. The sarang chicken was most definitely the highlight. read more

This place was yummy, especially on a rainy day like today. The service here was amazing. All the waitstaff was helping each other and the customers. Our waiter (Kenny) helped us pick the entrees. THANK YOU! must get the roti cani, sarangis seafood sizzling beef, mango/shrimp salad, and chicken satay. I love how the veggies stay crispy and fresh in these dishes. Came here with a large group of family for a celebration. They were very accommodating to us, even though we were kind of chaotic. We ordered a lot of food, maybe too much, but everyone enjoyed the items. Some of our favorites included the spicy crispy calamari, roti canai, and Malaysian fried rice. The service was pretty fast too, considering we ordered quite a few items and had a large group. We never felt as though we were waiting too long for our food to come out. Our picky family also enjoyed the meal and we were all left satisfied. read more
I was craving roti canai and found Layang Layang so we decided to give it a try. The roti canai was good but the hainanese chicken and spareribs were very disappointing. The hainanese chicken didn't even taste like hainanese chicken. The rice we ordered to eat with the chicken also just tasted like regular rice that's yellow, and not the typical flavor that comes with hainanese chicken. The spareribs were also tough to eat. Overall not a pleasant dining experience unfortunately. read more
We were in town and wanted to try food that we dont get to eat back home. I was happy to find a Malaysian restaurant and have been needing a fix of mee goreng. We were seated immediately, considering how busy they were. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We ordered mee goreng, mango chicken, coffe ribs and coconut rice. Everything we ordered was great!! From taste to the presentation of the food was excellent. I especially enjoyed the mee goreng and roti canai. These are a definite must try! read more
I've had Layang Layang, growing up in the Bay Area and I really missed the Cupertino location, but luckily there is still Malaysian food in the Milpitas are. For positives, the food is really good and authentic. My favorite apps are the Roti Canai and the Satay Chicken. The roti was crispy and soft with an amazing sauce that is my childhood fave. The Satay Chicken is really juicy and fresh with the crunchy cucumber side and peanut sauce. My friends and I also shared the 23. Sarang Seafood which had a great presentation: seafood on top of a fried taro cake. We also had the 98. Malaysian Fried Rice and my favorite vegetables: the 67. KangKung Belacon. The entree I liked the most was the veggies because it's served in a shrimp paste sauce and is so good simply with rice. For a family meal, I think sharing a seafood either noodle or rice and getting the KangKung veggies is a great choice. Service was fast and respectful, and the atmosphere was spacious and relaxing. I think my one sad qualm is how pricey the Bay Area has gotten and I guess somewhat understandable.. but I was a bit shocked on how much the prices have raised, esp for the veggies dish. Once in a while though, I think it's worth it to still order and try, especially because the Malaysian food is very delicious still. read more

fairly large restaurant, able to seat our party of 10 immediately for a late lunch. fairly fast service, dishes came at an appropriate amount of time lots of delicious, homey food - roti canai: my favorite! delicious roti and yummy sauce- wish it came with more sauce, ran out of sauce before the roti - calamari: solid but not special - chicken satay: another favorite! so so good especially with the peanut sauce. chicken is super juicy and tender - princess tofu: i'm a sucker for fried egg tofu, it's great - sarang seafood: very unique dish, worth a try! i like the fried taro on the bottom - basil chicken: i'm a big fan of basil so good flavor, overall ok - eggplant: great if you like eggplant read more

had lunch with family here. place is quite spacious and staffs are ok and attentive. for foods, i will say: 1. gado - gado salad: for me, it is just ok 2. rojak: i expect to have black shrimp paste or it is called 'petis' in asia but i think they use sweet soy sauce 3. beef rendang: it is ok, but will say the beef needs a bit softer or tender 4. mee goreng fried noodle: will say mediocre 5. kangkung belacan: if you love on choi or kangkung, this one is recommended. suggest asking to be a bit spicy 6. ikan singapore chili: this one is recommended 7. ice kachang: too sweet for me and recommend to use bowl instead of plate. expect to get more grass jelly, peanuts, and others ~ too much shaved ice and syrup 8. cendol: the coconut cream is too strong overall, i will say foods are just mediocre and pricey... read more
***Disclaimer: This is my FIRST time writing a 1 star Yelp Review, but it has nothing to do with the actual taste of the food that was provided (the taste of the food is great and all and the waiters provided great service and refilled our water multiple times). Rather, it has to do with the boss lady's LACK OF ATTENTIVENESS TO ALLERGIC CONCERNS! *** One of my friends had been wanting to take us to try some Malaysian restaurants in the Bay. I love trying new food places and also supporting local businesses. We ordered the the following: 1 ) $6.25 Roti Canai 2 ) $13.50 Satay Chicken 3 ) $15.50 Egg Chow Fun 4 ) $14.50 Hokkien Mee 5 ) $11.50 Ice Kacang (A.B.C.) We ordered items 1 to 4 first with waiter #1 and told him that someone in our group had a peanut allergy to make sure that none of the food contained peanuts so that our friend can eat it safely. The Satay Chicken description said it had a peanut sauce, but we made sure that it comes on the side and that the actual food item would not have peanuts in it. After finishing our food, we wanted some desserts and saw a picture of a shaved ice called "Ice Kacang (A.B.C)" with the description "Shaved ice with red bean, sweet corn, plum seeds, jelly served with red rose syrup and condensed milk." We ordered that with waiter #2 thinking that it would not contain peanuts. The shaved ice came and it looked very appetizing. All the toppings were buried under the shaved ice and it looked exactly like the picture we saw earlier. We started digging in and enjoying the dessert. It was then the friend that is allergic to peanuts spit out a piece of peanut not sure why it was in the shaved ice. We called one of the waiters over and asked if it contained peanuts and he said yes. We were VERY CONCERNED because it was never in the English description that it contained peanuts and it is a very common allergy. We were not aware that "Kacang" actually means peanuts, but people who are not familiar with the language should NOT be expected to search up every single thing and their meaning considering how common this allergy is. The waiter wasn't sure what to do so he said he will let the boss lady know. The boss lady came over and rather than apologizing to us, she BLAMED us for not clarifying that our group had a food allergy. We told her calmly that we did clarify it with one of the waiters in the beginning when we were ordering the first 4 items. Then, she proceeded to say that but they had multiple waiters and blamed it on the waiter. We told her that she should have clearly stated this nut allergy in her menu in the description, because someone could've actually died from this if they have a severe peanut allergy. Thankfully, our friend who is allergic noticed the peanut before actually eating and swallowing it or else this entire thing could've gone really wrong. What made us the most unsatisfied was the boss lady's INABILITY TO ADMIT TO FAULT AND APOLOGIZE SINCERELY for almost accidentally sending our friend to the urgent care. She had that attitude that was like "ok so what do you want me to do now? remake your dessert?" We asked if they had other desserts so that our friend could enjoy it safely and one of the waiter later came back with a different dessert that was on the house. Since nothing bad actually happened, I think apologizing and admitting that it was their fault for not clearly stating the word "PEANUT" in the description would suffice and was the least the boss lady could do. I really hope they would be clearer in their description and be more careful with food allergies so other customers would not be at risk of accidentally eating something they're not supposed to eat. read more

Great Malay restaurant with excellent service, beautiful interior, and a vast array of options. I always order the national disk of Malaysia, nasi lemak, and it was cooked excellently. We enjoyed upgrading it to the beef rendang version instead of the original chicken. What really stood out was their chicken satay. It was by far the most tender and juicy satay I have ever had, and by itself makes me want to come back! read more

The roti was slightly sweet and the sauce paired really nicely. The beef was also pretty solid. Love this place! It's been years since I've been here, and I finally went back over the weekend and just remembered how much I like the food here. Parking is a plus and the restaurant never seems to be crowded, which I'm ok with since there's no wait time. My go to dishes are: Singapore chili prawn, seafood tom yam soup, Princess tofu, calamari, coconut rice and the crispy fish (I eat this with the Singapore chili prawn sauce and it's so good). If I feel like taro then I also get the Sarang seafood nest. I haven't tried the Nasi Lemak yet so I will definitely be back to try that. So far though, it seems promising! read more
Probably the best Malaysian place in the South Bay. We haven't been in a while since the Cupertino location closed but met a friend here for lunch recently and had the nasi lemak. Lots of good choices including chicken sate which looked authentic. The nasi lemak was pretty good. Not as good as SoCal places but we don't live there. Don't know why there aren't more SE Asian places here. Prices I thought were a little high but what u gonna do? read more

Thought the "thick yellow noodle" on menu was the traditional Chinese/Taiwanese (south east style) noddles, unfortunately it was Japanese Udon all over in heavy thick soy sauce. Not tasty at all. The restaurant should provide what advertised on menu. read more
Next to being in Malaysia on taste and offerings. We have been going here for years dated from when they first opened. The Nasi Lemak is my favorite and until you go and try the food, please try a few before yelping :)... Servers are friendly and on par and they have great humor. Love this place and you should try it ! read more
My niece and nephew always take me out to fancy restaurants when I'm in town. They know I'm a foodie in Houston. Coming to Yalang Yalang was a surprise. I love the ambiance. It has a logical layout and tables can be rearranged to accommodate different party sizes. Service seems ok. We were busy catching up and I didn't pay attention to wait staff. They got high chairs for our little ones. Definitely a good place for family with young children. I read a few Yelp reviews to see which dish to order. I asked for Roti Canai to compare with my previous experience at a Chinese restaurant. I also recognized Royal Tofu, Chicken Sate Sticks, Pineapple Fried Rice and Taro Nest with Seafood. I'm not familiar with Malaysian food. So, I can't compare. As I was told Layang Layang is a fusion restaurant. I thought the dishes were very palatable and had right amount of spices that never overwhelm my taste buds. Kudos to the kitchen as the food arrived pretty quick. Yuck and OVERPRICED! Seriously the rotti is just too small for $10? And it's chewy like eating paper. The pineapple fried rice and chicken satay are seriously bad too. Definitely not worth the price tag. I would never ever come back here. read more
Stopped by with a group of 6 on a weekday evening and had no wait and were seated immediately. I was impressed by how huge the menu was with a lot of really great options! My favorite items were the roti (which we ordered 2 and wish we had 3!) princess tofu, fried rice, the beef stir fry. The food came out quick and it was all delicious. Highly recommend! read more
4.5 stars Layang Layang offers a huge menu of Malaysian and Southeast Asian dishes in a spacious, casual, tropically-decorated dining room. The must-get starter was the Roti Canai, a thin, chewy, homemade flatbread served with a side of curry sauce for dipping. I also loved the Gado Gado, an Indonesian salad made of fresh vegetables including lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and jicama, topped with crispy tofu and covered with the most delectable, earthy peanut sauce as a dressing. For our mains, the Nasi Lemak was a dish of coconut rice served with a spicy Chicken Rendang and a ton of flavorful, crunchy accompaniments including spiced anchovies, peanuts, jicama, carrots, cucumbers, and a boiled egg, and this combination made for an incredibly tasty, balanced dish. The Ikan Bakar was a gorgeously-presented whole striped bass topped with a sweet and spicy red paste made of lemongrass and wrapped in a banana leaf. Finally, we had the Kang Kung Belacan, a simple sautée of ong choi and red bell peppers in a spicy shrimp paste. Overall, the food here was on point, and the service was quick and friendly.
