The Bill was $66.17 When we started eating the Rice, the shrimps, that were added to this dish, were bad - the meat was soft and stingy! We also found more bad shrimp in the noodles. The Mango Shrimp dish was not too bad! I called the restaurant when they opened on Tuesday and explained the situation and the lady who answered the phone assured me that the shrimps were fresh from their vendor. Layang Layang Malaysian Cuisine is located in Milpitas. I've passed by this place many times. I've eaten at the Fremont Express location. But I finally decided to try it out. Whereas the Fremont location is fast casual and mainly take out, the Milpitas location is more dine-in style with a larger menu. Their lunch menu is similar to the Express location's entire menu. I took a seat, and I was handed a menu. The state were attentive and respectful as I placed my order. The wait was relatively short as I got my Fried Rice first, soon followed by the KangKung. Not recommended for pad thai. But a very good tastiness to the kari chicken potato with the rice. Tsing Tao is beer is good and smooth. It was splashing the delicious beef sauce, and the sparking sounds made the experience better. The dish is really flavorful, the seasoning was perfectly balanced. The meat was tender, and the bell peppers were not bitter, which is a common dislike in other beef dishes elsewhere. - Mee Goreng (5/5) This noodle dish was hitting at all the right spots. It was tangy and spicy, but not too overwhelming where the flavor was hidden. It was very similar to pad thai, but arguably better. Stopped by Layang Layang for lunch and was pleasantly surprised! I've always passed by this spot since I frequent the other restaurants in the plaza, but I am glad that I finally got around to trying out this restaurant. My friend and I were promptly seated, and the workers were very kind and attentive during the duration of our stay. We ordered the Princess Tofu as well as the Sarang Seafood. The Princess Tofu was crispy on the outside but SO soft and silky on the inside-- truly an experience fit for a princess. Sarang Seafood was pretty good; the crispy exterior pairs wonderfully with the taro, and the seafood + veggie combo within the bowl was tasty. It's also a bit on the saltier side for those who enjoy it. Would definitely stop by again for the tofu and perhaps try other items on the menu! read more

There are very few places where both my picky-Asian parents AND my kids can agree on but Layang Layang is on that list! There's something for all of their tastes and that makes me a happy Mama Bear. Dad loves their Hainan Chicken (plus a bowl of Hainan Chicken rice). Both he and my mom always comment that the "texture is authentic". IYKYK Baby Bear loves the Roti anywhere. I have to order two - one whole order for him and the other for the rest of the family. LOL Big Brother Bear always gets the spicy calamari. He loves the lightness of the batter and the spices used on it. Mother and I both love the Princess Tofu. The tofu is so fresh, has such a great flavor to it. I can't event describe it. Just get it. Always a very solid place for good Malay food! Things we tried: Their Nasi Lemak (gotta add the Beef Rendang) is always good, their Kangkung Balacan, Laksa, Rojak, Kari Mee and Roti Canai of course. I've tried a lot of pad Thai or some what similar to what is called a pad Thai and this is not it. I ordered it for an office and the flavor is either too much to too bland. The order was somewhat a bit alternated. The roti was dry and not flakey. Not enough layer to be called a roti. It is more like a toasted tortilla. The sauce was kind of chunky. Like many restaurants during the pandemic, they drastically cut down their operating hours. Finally got the chance to take my fiance here after loving my first visit back in 2019! We ordered the sarang seafood after seeing it was a must try, pearl mee (mouse tail noodles) since I loved it the first time, and Thai chicken. Our food took about 15-20 minutes to come and it all looked good. The sarang seafood was the most aesthetic one, the nest is actually fried taro! For $19, it wasn't worth it... it was really just mixed veggies with a few shrimps in a taro nest. The pearl mee (mouse tail noodles) was good! The noodles were thick, chewy and flavorful. It really does look like mouse tails if you keep looking at it haha! The Thai chicken wasn't that great, it tasted like shredded chicken with sweet and spicy sauce. I remember eating here many years ago, when my taste buds were very different. In a sense, I can divide my life into BN and AN years (before not-fat and after not-fat), and the last time I ate here was many years ago when I was fat and had much more normal eating patterns (I also believe their location was somewhere else). However, despite my taste buds changing in very strange ways, I still had a wonderful meal and greatly enjoyed everything I ordered. Moreover, the service was very nice. Even though the restaurant was basically full, we were in a hurry to make an appointment, and they were willing to clear out a pseudo-table in the corner of the restaurant to quickly accommodate us. That was very nice! And the food was just as good! Weirdly, this place had a significantly lower score on Yelp than I expected, and when I read the reviews, it seemed like a lot of very positive reviews just gave it 3/4 stars. So I suspect it just caters to a clientele that "grades on a curve" so to speak. Anyways, onto what I ordered: Nasi Lemak - A very iconic Malaysian dish. My understanding is that it's often considered a breakfast dish. Regardless, I had it at night and had no regrets. A lot of unique flavors combined, from coconut milk to some sort of fermented vegetable thing to chili to fishy-like sauce. It's a very unique flavor and a great thing to get if you're not familiar with Malaysian food. The pickled vegetables made it a fairly refreshing dish as well, which made it a great starter. Normally, I don't find rice dishes enjoyable or refreshing at all (and neither did my family - none of us really grew up eating rice and it goes down digestively weird), so this was a very pleasant surprise! Kari Mee Noodle Soup - Also very uniquely Malaysian dish. For whatever reason, everyone I'm related to immediately thinks yellow curry (and not much else) when they think Malaysian food. Though in fairness, that's not a bad thing! Malaysian curry is great! Very rich (due to coconut milk), but generously flavored with the unique Malaysian curry powder and not too sweet. This was served as a soup with nice chewy noodles, so the soup is eminently drinkable as well (rich, but not too sweet). Also nice potatoes inside soak up curry flavoring as well. I am an acolyte in potato supremacy, and this extends here as well. Eggplant Belacan - I really wanted a belacan (shrimp paste) dish, because the belacan flavor is extremely unique as well. They let you choose whatever vegetables with whatever flavoring you want (which is why the menu is so large). I just had eggplant because I liked it, and I had it with belacan sauce. The eggplant was definitely sauteed in a nice way so that the unique belacan flavor really soaked into it. However, it wasn't so overpowering that we had to pair the eggplant with rice or anything It was a very good dish, combining Chinese-style sautéing with Malaysian-style sauce. Kind of a microcosm of the restaurant, as I believe the restaurant owners are Chinese-Malaysian (at least some of the employees spoke Mandarin). Anyways, the meal was great, well-sized, not overly expensive. Just an overall great place to get a meal, especially if you're with 3+ people, so you can sample more dishes (due to the family-style dining). read more

I like Malaysian/Singaporean food and I was excited to try this spot when I found it on Yelp. I think this is the best Malaysian option in the area and I liked it better than the other ones like Banana Leaf. I've been here twice, one of the two being with my work colleagues and team. The prices are towards the expensive side but I think the quality of the food and the portions justify it: They were also really nice to us, and let us order 15 minutes before the restaurant was going to close, even though they told us 30 minutes ahead would be the final order when we walked in. Two people in our group were late and they waited to take our order patiently. One thing though is that they didn't have customization of spice level for some of the items I asked (ex: chicken rendang), which makes me think some of the curries are probably pre cooked. Coming to the food, The food was on the mild side to be honest and I wish it was more spicy and we could customize it to be. - Tom Yum Soup: The name says it, YUM! Huge portions, authentic taste (towards the sour side and a tad sweet maybe) with a lot of veggies. One bowl was enough for 4-5 people to share and still be left with additional soup. - Roti Canai Vegetarian: Standard dish, flake prata, the veggie version of the sauce was average though, I think I might've preferred the non vegetarian version since that's more authentic and delicious. - Chicken Satay: succulent chicken, well cooked, good peanut sauce - Green Curry: lots of veggies, and fresh, friends told me it was very mild though and they wished it was a bit spicier (is green curry supposed to be spicy? NO!) - Pineapple fried rice: In an actual pineapple like most places do it, tasted good, not towards the extremely sweet side like it sometimes is - Nasi Lemak: Chicken rendang, coconut rice and salad. The rendang was tasty but towards the mild side again. I liked the coconut flavored rice, it wasn't heavy on coconut but had a slight tinge. Didn't like the sambal mix though. Couple of other friends ordered one of the special noodle dishes (forgot which one) and thought they wished it was more flavorful and spicy. It seems like I am forever on a hunt to find new noodle dishes to serve my picky little munchkin. Since she gets tired of things fairly quickly, I was praying I'd find another option to add to her very very short list of items she actually eats. I stumbled across Layang Layang on Yelp and went for it. I placed a takeout order for Hokkien Mee Fried Noodle [thick yellow noodles cooked in heavily flavored soy sauce w/ chicken, shrimp, & veggies] and was told the dish would take 25 minutes to make. The dish was piping hot but I was immediately hit with a very very strong, pungent onion smell. The dish was riddled with fried onion/shallot pieces and that in itself was kind of a turn off. The "thick yellow noodles" weren't the thick egg noodles I had anticipated, they used udon. A majority of the noodles were all broken into bits and the noodles were swimming in its sauce. Chicken was thick and cooked well but the 3 pieces of shrimp provided did not taste fresh. Soft noodles are good for the munchkin since she's prone to not chewing but the salty aspect was alarming. Maybe the kitchen staff was having an off day, maybe I'm tastebuds are sensitive to salt, maybe I just picked a bad item, but maybe Layang Layang is just overhyped. 2 stars with this experience, I'm not sure if I'd want to chance it and come back. read more

Fantastic Malaysian restaurant with many options! The sarang seafood is a must-have. The satay chicken skewers was soft and juicy, and goes well with the peanut sauce and fresh & crisp cucumbers. As a Singaporean in bay area, I've heard people telling me to try layang layang Malaysian food. And I've been putting it off for so long, because I just didn't think it'll be authentic. I'm glad I was proved wrong! I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. - Satay (chicken) 4/5- was juicy and huge chunks of meat. Of course it wasn't that close to satay in Asia, it could be more smoked/ charred but nevertheless still tasty. - Nasi Lemak (beef) 3.5/5- I could taste the lemak (coconut) in the rice which was so fragrant and tasty. However the beef rendang meat was tough and the sambal ikan bilis was not spicy at all. - Chili fish fillet 3.5/5- I can see what they're trying to do, by emulating the Singapore chili crab sauce here. While the taste was not quite close, it was still delicious, sweet and savory so we still enjoyed the dish. Overall, not quite close to Singaporean or Malaysian food, but it was still a tasty meal that I enjoyed and I believe this is one of the best places in the bay to get Malaysian food. read more

The sauce is pretty unique, it has a slight kick and is tangy with the tamarind base. Service here is usually pretty decent, it can get busy so sometimes it may be hard to get them to come by. I love Malaysian food! Layang Layang in Milpitas does Malaysian food really well. I've dined in before COVID restrictions and had take out twice since restrictions. They're very friendly and calling for take out has been hassle free. The dish I use to gauge Malaysian restaurants is Massaman beef. Layang Layang's Massaman beef is spot on. They give you big chunks of tender beef is a spicy/sweet red curry sauce. We ask for it mild so it's a very light heat that doesn't detract from the overall flavor. The best part is that the meat is more tender and tastier the day after. We also had the Belachan Kangkung, Roti Paratha, Mango Papaya Salad, Garlic Eggplant, and Hainanese Chicken. I especially loved the Belachan kangkung which is seldom actually available. We've only gotten take out lately and the food holds up well in transit, even the delicate roti. read more
