Lee's Bakery may be one of the first spots I ever visited on Buford Highway many years ago. Food quality is consistently great. In fact, I was thrilled to see it included in the banh mi section of "1,000 Foods to Eat Before You Die" (by Mimi Sheraton) when I bought the book recently. The restaurant has clearly grown in popularity over the years. Now when I visit, there is almost always a wait. You can order at the counter and take your food to go or now, they offer table service. They didn't take credit cards for a while, but now they do as long as you have a $10 minimum. If you dine in, they have several tables of four and some larger communal tables where they will seat larger parties and/or multiple groups. It can get crowded, so it you go at a meal time, be prepared to wait. I have never had to wait too long though. As for the food, I almost always stick to the banh mi, but I also have been known to enjoy the pho, particularly if the weather is cooler or if I have a cold. Both are solid. The banh mi is reliable and classic. Crispy, French bread with perfectly pickled carrots and radishes with cucumber and cilantro. On this visit, I noticed that they put the jalapeno on the side (which is a new twist - usually it comes right out on sandwiches - maybe it was a surprise to some). I usually have the tofu banh mi, and my husband opts for the BBQ pork. My son most recently tried the chicken, but we all preferred the pork to the chicken. This is my husband's favorite banh mi in the city. The menu now has an option where you can get a banh mi and pho combo, which seems like a great option if you are up for a larger meal. I always order an iced coffee (cafe sua da) - it's made perfectly here. Strong and creamy. We also have enjoyed some of their smoothies. I am a fan of the avocado smoothie, in particular. It is heavy and creamy - almost a meal in its own. The value is incredible. The restaurant is super casual, not at all upscale. Service is ok, but it is a super busy place. I don't get the impression that they want you to hang out for a while. People are waiting for your table. Pro tip: You can get your banh mi to-go deconstructed and put it together for a super fresh sammie at home. I went to a Superbowl party a few years back that did this, and it was a huge hit! I consider this a must-visit spot, and I recommend it to a lot of intown friends who are looking for Buford Highway staples to try. I am sure my family and I will return again and again. read more

Delicious pho in Atlanta? I never would have thought! They have a combo deal where you get a slightly smaller bowl of pho and a half (or Full) sandwich. Oh boy! The best of both worlds! YUM. This place was hoppin' and can tell you why. So I hiked all day today and was starving after, really craved some Pho after the serious freeze of my rock climbing. I yelped and found this amazing place! I got the Banh mi with Pork and the Beef Pho to go. Delicious! Only cost a little over $12, very reasonably priced for such a great meal. During the day, you can get this as a combo for less of a price. Don't forget to grab some of those sauces by the register! 3 for a dollar. They also have a bin of hoagie rolls which are 3 for $1, and after 3 pm can grab an extra one free. Banh mi: the flavor of the pork was amazing. I wish I had not had to warm it up bc the cilantro I could tell was super fresh, carrots crazy fresh, everything super yummy. I chose to alternately dip it in some sweet brown sauce and hot chili sauce. Smart! The Pho: Was good but not as flavorful as the sandwich for sure. I would still get it again but maybe try one of the others. Flank is usually my go to. But it was still great! Can especially see myself craving this when a colds coming on- Pho in general, always a good idea! This soup came with loads of fresh basil, bean sprouts, noodles of course, green and white onions, and a big chunky ol' lime! Nice. The only negative part of my experience is that my food was pretty cold by the time I got home, and I'm staying at an air bnb now about two minutes away. Lucky they have a microwave in my private room. So was no biggie, just warmed it up! Still tasted amazing but it's why I had to drop a star. I would love to dine in next time and enjoy the atmosphere a bit more. The rice rolls looked incredible so I will definitely be back for those. Overall, a pretty great late supper for me! Not sure why I've never left a review before because we come to Lee's all the time. Craving banh mi? Lee's. Don't know what I want to eat? Default is Lee's. Why? Because the banh mi is great & at a cheap price. And they score more points for even more money savings: selling cheap leftover bread loaves, which are still great next day. But they definitely do other menu items well too, like their pho. If you're like me & can't decide, get a pho combo - pho + banh mi. My last go-to menu item is the shaking beef. I have even ordered it to go after eating a banh mi just so I can have it for dinner. They are also pretty good about COVID seating if dining in. To first-timers looking for this place, turn into the Chevron (much easier to spot) when you are looking for this place. Parking is moderately available. No troubles finding a place to park. Service was a bit slow; they were overwhelmed when I was there. Servers forgot to bring out utensils. They ran out of spoons and gave me a plastic spoon, etc. Food was pleasant/nice. This place is known for their sandwiches. I enjoyed the sandwiches and Pho. If you're already in the area, this place is a great option for Vietnamese food. It's taken me a while to make it to Lee's Bakery for their banh mis, but it was worth the wait! Firstly, the entrance is on the side, so don't try to enter the door facing Buford Highway. Also, I don't recommend sitting near the pointy corner. Something about the acoustics there will make you cringe at the amplified asinine conversations nearby college students are having. We both got the #8 le combo ($3.75) and the #10 grilled pork sandwich ($3.75). I was expecting petite portions going by the price, but that was not the case at all. You can save a little by getting them to go, so there's that. The le combo is ham, pork liver pate, pork head cheese, cucumber, pickled carrots, and pickled radish. With a subtle swipe of mayo and a sliver of jalapeno hidden underneath. I requested no cilantro too. The grilled pork is recommended by Lee's Bakery and for good reason. The BBQ pork has a stronger flavor than the ham/head cheese/pate. It was our hands-down favorite, but I still really liked the le combo too. The dreamy baguette was the true standout for me. If you so desire, you can buy loaves at Lee's to make your own bahn mi sandwiches at home. The servers were super nice and accommodating too. Ordered takeout on a Friday night and was so delighted with the food and fast service. My friend and I each ordered a banh mi sandwich and medium bowl of pho. I was able to get two meals out of this. The pho broth is incredibly well flavored but also slightly salty. The broth was packaged separately in a cylinder container which was well appreciated. In a takeout box contained cooked noodles, all the meaty component, bean sprouts, basil, lime and hoisin sauce-- nothing out of the ordinary. Pretty good spot if you're on Buford. We walked in and got seated right away during lunch time. I did the combo that came with a bowl of pho and half a sandwich. I liked the pho because it didn't taste like it had too much sodium. Sometimes I can't eat much of my bowl when there's too much going on because I keep drinking water. Eighteen Yelpers invaded Lee's Bakery last night for our latest Buford Highway UYE (http://www.yelp.com/events/atlanta-buford-highway-uye-lees-bakery). Showing up unannounced (I didn't feel the need to call ahead for this casual eatery), the restaurant did a pretty respectable job of handling our large crowd. Even Cynthia N. approved. All banh mis (Vietnamese sandwiches) are now $3.00 each. Some sandwiches used to be $2.50, but they're all the same price now. The restaurant still runs their volume special: buy 5 banh mis, get 1 free (to-go orders only). Credit card minimum is $10. I always stick to my favorite standby: the banh mi dac biet a.k.a. "Lee's Special Sandwich" on the menu. They don't tell you what's in it, unless you ask, and even then I'm not sure they'll tell you everything. Along with the usual cucumber, cilantro, and jalapeno, it's got head cheese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_cheese) as one of its ingredients. The banh mi cha ca (fish sandwich) is pretty solid too. The fish is served chopped up in patties similar to fish cake, served piping hot. One to two sandwiches do a good job of filling me up. The combos, where you get half a banh mi and a small bowl of pho, look filling as well. I've yet to try the pho at Lee's, but will have to force myself on my next visit just to see what it's like. The pho looks decent. It's just that their banh mis are too tempting to pass up. Also, according to Melissa M. and Marty J, the banh mi trung (scrambled egg sandwich) is very good. Also on my list of things to try. I did try a new appetizer last night, the banh cuon (rice flour crepes filled with ground meat). The rice flour crepes are glutinous and are similar to the Cantonese dim sum item cheong fun (rice noodle rolls). The crepes are good, but you need to eat them with some kind of sauce (Vietnamese fish sauce is provided). The dish is served with some fresh greens and bean sprouts. Aaron D. and I noticed the bean sprouts were soggy, like they'd been steamed or something. They weren't fresh and crispy like the bean sprouts served with pho. The smoothies here are decent. I've tried both the avocado and the taro. The avocado is made with real avocado. Lee's version is thick and creamy. You won't find many avocado chunks in the smoothie. They blend it pretty well. I really like the taro, though I'm not sure if they use real taro. The taro smoothie is bright purple, very sweet, and icy. The smoothies are kind of big, so you may want to consider splitting one with another person. Condensed milk FTW. read more

Lee's Bakery has something of a legendary status among my friends. And I am a little late to this party. Everyone seems to love that place, and I can see why. They serve up some of the best banh mi in the city. The bread, in particular, is just an exercise in perfection. The texture is great: soft on the inside, crispy on the outside. The first time I went, I had the "Lee's Sunny Side Up Egg Sandwich," which is banh mi with ham, head cheese, baloney, and a sunny-side egg on the aforementioned fantastic bread. My friend had the Combo Congee, with what she and her husband refer to as soup with "squiggly bits," a beef broth soup with Rare Steak, Well Done Flank, Brisket, Tendon, and Tripe (Pho Dac Biet). It looked really good. One day I will have to try it. On that first visit, there were some delays in getting food to the table. I mean, this place gets slammed during the weekly lunch hour (and for good reason, the food rocks!). So it pays to have a little patience. But on that day, on a weekend afternoon, it wasn't so busy, and we were wondering why she was the last one to get her food. (And by a big margin.) The second time I visited, I had the Pho Ga (chicken noodle soup). This may be among my new favorite things--it totally hit the spot. This soup was a very simple work of art. The broth was nicely fragrant and perfect. The vermicelli and chicken pieces were delicious. Served with the ubiquitous plate of sprouts & basil & herbs, the only thing missing was a few slices of hot peppers. I wanted to pick up the entire bowl and drain the thing. And towards the end, I did. My friend had some spring rolls, which are clearly a hit, and some Shrimp Noodle Soup (Pho Tom). Prices are quite reasonable. Pay at the register on the way out. They also serve up smoothies, boba, and some excellent chilled coffee. And as this is a "bakery," you can even (very cheaply) take some of the excellent bread home with you. Banh Mi. Need I say more? I don't even know what to say about this place. The Banh Mi is fresh, it's not overly priced and that's just how it's supposed to be! We came here for lunch and then again before I left to basically load up before I went back to TN. I'm glad I did as well because of the 6 sandwiches I ate, throughout the week, they were all still good! If you don't know what a Banh Mi is, it's a Vietnamese sub/sandwich. If you know your history, you know that the French once occupied Vietnam as a colony and is why the bread is a baguette. I got the combination, which is how I've always saw the original banh mi. In it comes with pickled carrots, daikon (pickled radish), cilantro, fresh jalapeños, pork, and paté. It's usually all cold cuts, meat wise, and in the end you just get this amazing sandwich which you just won't get enough of. I've been told that Lee's Bakery has the freshest bread, which is key in having a good banh mi, and that they make the bread fresh daily in the back. They then sell the baguettes that aren't used the previous day in the front for a great bargain at 3 for $1! All in all. This place is great. I've been here quite a few times over the years and have had their food through catering for large events such as a conference I attended a few years back. Their Banh Mi and Pho (Beef) is the only thing I'm going off of. I've had better sandwiches, but it's not too shabby here. Less flavorful in my opinion compared to another competitor down Buford Hwy, which is pretty popular for their sandwich (QH). Overall, the staff here is very friendly and busy accomodating dine-ins, to-gos, and caters. The restaurant does need some renovation. I lived in Chamblee over 30 years and I love this family run business. I have eaten there for over 2 decades and it has never disappointed me. I have eaten new new dishes and desserts. LC#1 is half or whole sandwich and beef noodle soup, LC2 and LC3 is chicken or tofu noodle soup with a half or whole sandwich. The medium size bowl is big so the large one is for 3 people!!!! It was hot and delicious. The beef noodle soup was rich in taste but not heavy. the meal comes with a plate of bean sprouts and a lemon slice. It was filling without feeling over eating. I added some Chile oil at the end and lemon to give the soup a spicy taste, The sandwich is simple but good in taste. It is amazing how simple vegetables and meat combined can made a sandwich so good!! I used the sandwich to soak up some of the soup broth. Mmmmmmmm . They have a good selections of sandwiches at a great price. I love the grilled chicken and pork sandwiches. They have a nice selection of noodle plates also. We planned go to Co'm Grill next door and my husband mentioned we haven't try to dine-in and eat the food at the Lee Bakery's so we came here for a try. This small restaurant located inside Bufford Hwy Plaza. Banh Mi (the Vietnamese sandwich bread) is famous here but I didn't order that. I ordered soup, something to fulfil my hungry tummy. So...since this is a small restaurant, mainly they sell banh mi for to-go so it's understandable. 1) Ambiance/Atmosphere - seemed like they don't have the atmosphere here or maybe it's just me. The restaurant doesn't feel like it has much energy and the decor is very simple, sort-of boring. 2) Cleanliness - average and fair. I came around 7PM and it's still looked ok, not that dirty. 3) Greetings - ah the greeting...look like they have 2 main people is working so whether the lady to greeted us was tired or that's the way she is...but she just told us "sit anywhere you would like" and walked away. No smile? No star for this one... 4) Services/Server - it's alright but not that outstanding. 5) Food - the important part. We ordered Spring Roll for the appetizer, Pho Dac Biet for myself, & Combo of Beef Pho with full Banh Mi for my husband. Spring Roll - same as many other places - vermicelli with shredded cabbage or herbs along with thinly sliced pork and shrimp. Served with Peanut sauce so be careful if you are allergic to peanut. Pho Dac Biet - I admit the broth is good. But, the meat, since it's Dac Biet (Special Combination?), it should have a little bit of everything (the meat) but from I saw is beef, brisket, and beef stripe (and it wasn't that much either). No beef tendon, no beef shank so sort of disappointed. They ran out of basil but still, they gave me a little of cilantro to replaced basil and it's for 2 people. My husband let me have a bite of his banh mi dac biet. I admitted that their banh mi is good. I like it. Bottom Line: I see the broth of Pho soup and Banh Mi Dac Biet are tasted good. Ok after being in GA for a minute, I would say Lee's Bakery is pretty good by GA standard. It's not the best but its relatively reliable and cheap. They have a constant promo where, if you buy 5 sandwiches, you get the 6th one for free. Who doesn't like free? That said, my primary problem with it is its lack of social distancing and mask wearing enforcement, esp in this COVID pandemic era. One on Saturday afternoon (and I've been there on a few weekday evenings with similar experiences but that Saturday was the worst), there was at least 10 ppl waiting in a confined waiting space of 100 square feet. Not good. Some patrons weren't wearing masks and, keep in mind, their banh-mi making stations are open concept so aerosols can easily land on your food despite the cooks wearing masks. I just wouldn't be surprised if Lee's Bakery is a vector for spread, esp with the uptake of cases in GA. Would I recommend? Sure if you feel like a banh mi sandwich is potentially worth your health. Go-to place for banh mis! This is a small, casual restaurant that specializes in banh mis but also has a diverse menu that includes soups, rice dishes, noodles, and more. Their banh mis have been nationally recognized in the past, and although some of my Georgia resident friends will recommend places other than Lee's for banh mis, this place has a very solid version that I do recommend trying before leaving Atlanta. For $8.75, you can get a combo with includes a medium bowl of pho with half a banh mi and it is the perfectly sized meal. I got beef pho with rare steak and brisket. My favorite was the brisket because of how tender it was. The broth was light but still had some depth, and the noodles were proportioned to the right amount. The banh mi was also great. I've usually only had these when they weren't fresh and therefore to enjoy it at the restaurant was an entire new experience for me! To me, I think the bread and the marinated meat is what makes it great. I got the pork banh mi and it was super flavorful and sweet and savory. The bread was pleasantly soft but still had a good chew to it as a baguette should have. The sandwich came with typical toppings such as pickled carrot, jalapeño on the side, cilantro, cucumber, and a slather of some mayonnaise-based sauce. Woke up at 6am yesterday craving pho and a banh mi and ended up at Lee's Bakery around 10am that morning. I had never had pho or banh mi so early before and now I believe that eating them first thing in the morning is the best way to do it. I tried the iced coffee, pork and shrimp spring rolls, and pho and bbq pork banh mi. Everything I tasted was absolutely incredible, minus the pork and shrimp spring rolls. The spring rolls weren't bad, they were just okay or average for what you usually get. Lee's Bakery hit it out of the park with their iced coffee, the pho, and the banh mi. Lee's Bakery is very popular for its banh mi and I can see why. First, it's all about the baguette. The baguette here is perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. It's perfect. The bbq pork is flavorful. Surprisingly, the pickled veggies were my second favorite part. They complimented the baguette perfectly. I wouldn't mind eating just the baguette and pickled veggies. The pho was solid. It didn't slap you in the face with flavor, but it was clean and light. I loved having it for breakfast. The brisket and steak were incredibly soft and tender. The steak would fall apart in between my chopsticks. The iced coffee was the best wake up call anyone could get. It was very strong and flavorful, but it didn't coat my tongue with sugar due to the milk. Usually, Vietnamese coffees are too sweet for me and I can taste the condensed milk sitting on my tongue. Whatever condensed milk they use at Lee's Bakery is just right. It tasted like it was added just to dilute the intensity of the coffee. Overall, I LOVE Lee's Bakery. I will make a priority to visit whenever I'm in Atlanta. I love the details at Lee's Bakery from the food to the restaurant itself. Your essentials like sriracha, hoisin, spoons, straws, and chopsticks are available at your table. There was no need to ask for anything else. Haven't had a bad meal yet. I've gone here several times for lunch and gotten the seafood soup, beef soup, and banh mi sandwiches. Every time it's perfect and then when I get up to pay I'm always amazed at how they charge so little for this amazing food. The meat is tender, the seafood is fresh, and the buns on the sandwiches are freshly baked, soft, and delicious! I was craving some banh mi so decided to get some takeout from them to give it a try. I ordered three banh mis: grilled pork, fish, and combo. I also got an iced Vietnamese coffee and shrimp spring rolls. Everything came out quick and I secured the bag home to my hungry boyfriend in less than 20 minutes. I'm always a fan of Vietnamese iced coffee, so you already know I was taking sips while driving home. I'm usually a black coffee type of gal, but when it comes to condensed milk in coffee, I simply cannot resist. It was the perfect combo of bitter and sweet, and kept me caffeinated for the afternoon. All the banh mis come loaded with fresh veggies, like lettuce, pickled carrots and radishes, cucumber, and jalapeños. My favorite out of the three banh mis was the fish, surprisingly. It was filled with bouncy, fried fish cake that had the right umami I was looking for. The bread was personally not the best I've had, however. It was rather hard (maybe even stale?) and didn't have the flakiness. Nonetheless, the flavors were still there. The spring rolls were a healthy treat. It seemed freshly made since the rice paper was still sticky and super chewy (almost choked on my first bite lol).
