I remembered hearing good things about this bakery, but didn't really get the chance to try anything from it until I was given one of their large chocolate chip cookies during a networking event. When I tried it, the cookie's flavor was sickening sweet. I'm normally a huge fan of sweets, but there is a limit to how much I can handle and this cookie contained twice of that. I had split it with two other people and somehow we were still unable to finish it. I suppose large cookies might not be my thing, but this was a terrible introduction to them. I'm glad I had gotten it for free, as any amount of money spent on it would've felt like a waste. read more

Staff was friendly but the cookie...it was burnt and undercooked ? How does that happen? This has been on my list to try for a long time and finally make it to NYC and we try a Two Chip Choc Chip and one with walnuts and both was a let down. The cookie was cold as well, I thought it was suppose to be warm? We ordered it and sat down right in the store to eat it so there's no way it could have went cold. Maybe we will try another destination of Levain Bakery before we leave but we thought going to the original was the best idea. read more

Bias review! Because I'm such a die hard Leavin fan. The amount and quality really shines through. Service was quick. You queue, order and pick up cookies. My favorite was double chocolate or chocolate chip one. The one with peanut butter/walnuts were good too. Lemon one was more delicate. Pro tip is to warm them 10s before consuming if you are not eating them right away. Great for sharing and as a treat. read more

I one hundred percent recommend Levain Bakery. I came here for the chocolate chip cookies and they did not disappoint! They are baked to perfection with the right amount of crunch in the outside and softness on the inside. Our cookies were fresh out of the oven and the chocolate chip chunks melted once you bit into them. These cookies are as delicious as they are massive! My fiance is a chocolate chip cookie enthusiast and he too, highly recommends Levain's chocolate chip cookies! We'll be coming back next time we're in the city. read more

These classic cookies have changed over the years and they seem to be less baked than in the past. The lines are long but they move quickly. It's the kind of thing you have to taste for yourself and decide if it's your kind of cookie. For my palate there are better cookies at other bakeries.... that said I ate it before I could take a pic (so it was pretty good). NOTE: After I posted this review I reviewed a thoughtful response from Levain. That alone is a testament to their attention to detail and I will go back and EAT another cookie(s)! read more

Standard bakery, nothing too special. The place is very small so expect to rub shoulders while trying to queue/order. The staff seems to be working really hard and you can see everything happening behind the counter which is cool. The pastries are alright, and drinks also okay. read more

So, I unfortunately cannot comment on ambiance or service BUT I can comment on what a delight to my taste buds! Holy Moses! Wow! First, each cookie can feed like 2 people! HUGE! And they are so buttery and rich with amazing chocolate. The chocolate chip is chocolate overload. A true sugar rush. I do love the large amount of walnuts in that cookie. It balances so well! Chocolate walnut cookie 7.63/10- this is my favorite cookie however I'm not sure why but it didn't hit like it used to. I felt that it could have been way more gooey and soft on the inside and a bit more chocolately. Also the first time I came here my cookie was served warm so that it melts when you take a bite, however this time it was not served hot. Still very good and fresh and I liked the flavors but I think this one was a bit more walnut-y than the one I previously had Mocha 3.12/10- was not a fan, tasted watered down and was extremely strong. I can finally scratch off trying a Levain cookie off my foodie bucket list. Yayyy! The cookie was pretty awesome; it was soft and cakey and of course they are known for the MASS. I've made copycat cookies in the past knowing the work that goes into it so trying it at the OG place is part of the experience. The store front is very small. The day me and my bf came it was crowded cause there were people on the side eating their cookies. We didn't know where the line started due to the crowding but the service was quick and efficient. Levain has the chunkiest cookies ever and I love that it's almost like a scone. I got their chocolate chip, double chocolate chip, and a cinnamon raison bun. Every time I visit New York I have to come to Levain and take a box with me. Alysse was the absolute best! This was our first time and she was super patient. The shop is not big but there are numerous choices. We for the 2 chip chocolate chip, chocolate chip walnut, dark chocolate pb and oatmeal raisin. All were delicious. We've already discussed taking some home. The cookies are melt-in-your-mouth, to die for! I ordered the chocolate chip and it was thick, warm, gooey and perfectly soft on the inside. The coffee was also good, and complemented the cookie. When you walk into Levain, the aroma of baked goods fills the air. There was no line when we went, so we were served quite quickly. There is seating outside - great for people watching. read more

If you're visiting NYC and have one day where you're sight seeing, add this to your list! There are multiple locations that will likely be in your area when you are wandering around the city. The shop was small but cute. Although it was a tight space, the service was so fast I did not mind. We were able to grab a spot on the steps outside. The cookies were so decadent and rich. I couldn't even finish my cookie in one sitting but it was delicious. Made for the perfect sweet snack break while exploring! read more

First time trying Levain cookies and wow, these cookies are big, thick and decadent. Tried the original walnut chocolate chip and got a box to share. The cookie was crisp and buttery on the outside, and soft, gooey and doughy, but not raw, on the inside. Walking in you're greeted with the Fresh baked, sweet bakery smell. The shop is small and down a short flight of stairs, and line was out the door. Definitely worth a visit and will be returning when I'm in the area. read more

Full transparency, this is based off of my 11/2022 trip to NYC of multiple locations combined. The cookies were spot on. I'd say a TAD bit over hyped but still dang good. Not the best of this type of cookie I've had but very solid. Where they falter to me is their non cookie items. They had I believe it was called a valrhona that was basically an extra tough bread that had chocolate in it. They had what was kind of like a long bar of bread with chocolate chips; that was pretty tasty. Store was clean and the staff were fairly attentive I at all of the locations I had hit. read more

I've found an underground heaven! After climbing down steep stairs, I walked into a bright bakery filled with an intoxicating aroma of sweet cookies. A cheerful worker welcomed us in and recommended their classic chocolate chip walnut cookie or dark chocolate peanut butter chip cookie. *Chocolate chip walnut cookie: Massive, dense, and freckled with chocolate and walnuts. I wished the cookie was warm or fresh for a core of melty chocolate. The high sweetness became tiresome after a few bites. *Fall chocolate chunk: The fall spices (ginger, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon and molasses) sounded good, but tasted odd. Not my fave. If the stairs at this location are inconvenient, consider walking down a brief 2 blocks for the next Levain bakery with no stairs :) read more

So, as a cop baking really helps me unwind and decompress from bad crap at work. I live in Hawaii and obviously Levain Bakery is all the way in NYC. I would stumble across their IG from time to time and see those amazing chocolate chip cookies and long lines etc. I would find copy-cat recipes and made quite a few that were pretty good, but I never had tried the actual Levain cookie. Fast forward to the 2023 Maui wild fires and all the chaos, fall out and trauma that followed. I told myself I would travel more and see things in person. My wife, daughter and I traveled to NYC and you already know Levain was on the list. Let me say this - IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!!! Crunchy outer exterior with a melt in your mouth warm, chewy center...the decadent box was life changing!!! The copy-cat recipes could never replicate the real thing. The original Levain Bakery, located on a beautiful brownstone-lined street on NYC's Upper West Side. The sub-basement level shop is tiny, with no seating aside from a bench outside. Expect at least one group of European tourists to be huddled inside. The staff were friendly. I have tried Levain cookies before, at their LA location, and was not impressed; they tasted like flavorless scones. I wanted to try them again properly, in their place of origin, in the morning when they had likely been freshly baked. I opted for their iconic Chocolate Chip Walnut, and a seasonal Dark Chocolate Peppermint, and walked the few blocks to Central Park to enjoy them. Their texture and taste was far superior to the ones I had from the LA shop, but I still feel their recipes lack flavor. More salt and vanilla extract, please! I did love the amount of chocolate chips, and the unique texture, which is pleasantly crisp on the outside and slightly gooey on the inside. If you want to try Levain cookies, do it here, but know that there are better cookies in NYC. read more

The smell when you walk in!! My cousin gifted us a variety pack that was delivered to our house about a year ago. Cute box, cookies with a bow. My husband who isn't even into cookies was thirsting for more of the dark chocolate peanut butter cookies. Our family was fighting over the cookies! Best cookies ever. That's a bold statement but I stand behind it. I was in the city yesterday about to head out with said cousin. I said any bakeries around and she reminded me of the cookies! She alerted me we were very close and so it happened. I made it, in person, to buy some more cookies! Still amazing! Cute little shop. Very clean. Nice staff. Good displays. It never misses. Haven't been to this location. Got the pumpkin cookie for a limited time. They've truly mastered the gooey inside, crispy outside. Took this home and not even super hot it's still so good at room temperature. Splitting the cookie is so satisfying too. Nice workers. Good music. This location is cramped compared to the first because I believe it's the original store. Cool to see all the articles of Levain's in the news. read more

I sipped the cold brew in between bites to cut the richness. It was a very satisfying meal. The Lumberjack is not something I would recommend you eat every day, but it's good as an occasional treat. In the past I've ordered lunch from Daily Provisions via delivery (the "Chefy" salad and the chicken milanese with arugula salad are my favorites), but I might start adding other breakfast sandwiches to the mix.

Well, back when the new UWS Magnolia Bakery http://www.yelp.com/biz/magnolia-bakery-new-york-2 opened up a block away from me about a year or so ago, I promised my buddy Atif, http://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=cD_hpkvErXCyQHBQzv8KYQ. that I would check out Levain before I EVER stepped foot into the purportedly vile abode that is Magnolia. Well, before good 'ol Atif, I had promised other, non-Yelp friends that I would do the same thing long before Mag opened up but shhhh... don't tell him! Anyhow, the reason it took me so long even though this place is completely on my walking circuit of places to visit, is that I do not posses a sweet tooth! I swear, Atif must have somehow inherited my dad's infamous sweet tooth and robbed me of my birthright! Good thing though, as my metabolism is probably about 50 times slower than Atif's and if I possessed his penchant for sweets, I'd probably weigh 400 Lbs rather than my svelte 395 by now. Anyhow, between the beer store and the liquor store a while back, I descended the stairs down into the quaint and lovely Levain. I almost could not look at the multitude of delicacies offered because the bright smiles of their shockingly (for the UWS, that is) friendly and happy staff kept diverting my attention. It's not every day that you see such genuinely content and fulfilled employees working at a store in this 'hood! Tells you something right is happening in there. Made paying $3.75 for a freakin' cookie completely worth it! But the cookie... Well, as I said, I do not posses my dad's sweet tooth nor Atif's, but I do know good when I taste it. This was probably the best cookie I have ever tasted in my life, bar none! From the sugar to the chips to the nuts (and I think nuts are a complete ABOMINATION in a CC cookie), right down to the butter and even the gol-danged flour, everything that could have been right about this stupid cookie was right! And for $3.75 it darned well better have been! Lesson learned - listen to your friends. Will I now check out Magnolia less than a block away? Hell no! Why the heck should I when Levain is a mere five blocks up?! Those semolina loaves were looking pretty darned good too! read more

Really 4-5 stars. Known for their thick and soft in the middle cookies. Only 4 kinds to choose from chocolate chip walnut, chocolate chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin and chocolate peanut butter chip. Yes they have other baked goodies but they are known for their cookies Yes it is like a cookie you could make at home. If you want to make a cookie 4 times the size of a regular cookie. But coming here and getting a fresh one out of the oven can't be beat. Yes it's $4 a cookie. Just think of it as a large brownie or another bar you pay that much for. I tried the dark chocolate peanut butter chip cookie. I loved how soft the inside was and how the pb chips melted as you broke it in half. It tasted like a brownie with peanut butter. Super buttery and heavy, but so good too. I had to eat it in 3 different settings since it was so sweet and large. I enjoyed it so much I went back a week later. I had. The dark chocolate chocolate chip cookie and then I tried the chocolate chip walnut cookie. I loved the dark chocolate chip cookie it was like a brownie. The chocolate chip one to me was just okay. I went with family and a couple of them loved the chocolate chip one the most. The first time I went I waited in line 15 to 20 minutes. Then I went again a week later and waited almost an hour in line. I don't think it's worth waiting that long. Small shop and it would be helpful if they had a sign before you entered showing what was for sale and the price. And let people know to decide before they entered the store. I usually dont find myself on the upper west side, but today I went to the premiere at the Beacon Theater. I was suppose to meet up with a friend at 6:30pm, but I got there a bit early. What to do, as I thought, then I remember Levain was around here somewhere, but I forgot. Trusty ol' Yelp was a click away from my phone and to my surprise, I was standing a few steps away from it. I saw their choices of cookies and had a hard time deciding, with a cookie being 4 bucks each, I could only buy one, at the moment. I could have used my card, but I didn't want to. eh.. Anyways, since I had to choose one, of course being the chocolate lover I am, I chose the double dark choc chip. The lady in front of me ordered the choc chip walnut, but since it just came out the oven, she had to wait a moment. Being that it was fresh from the oven, I wanted one even more, but I couldn't wait because I had to meet up with my friend. As soon as I bit into the double dark chocolate chip cookie, I felt like Tyrone Biggums, scratching my neck, in need for more. I wanted another bite, but I also wanted to savor it. Being the nice person I am, I let my friend have a piece and he agreed. It was a soft gooey melt in your mouth type of goodness. Oh how I regret not buying that chocolate chip walnut cookie. Obviously, there's not much more I can say about the chocolate chip walnut cookies at Levain Bakery. I decided to stop here based on the overwhelming reviews on Yelp & was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting an average-sized cookie from a smaller bakery. What I came across was a sunken near-shack on a side street (only about 4 people can fit inside so the line extended on the front steps). It only took a few minutes for my order to be taken & I couldn't help but see if the cookie lived up to its hype. There were a few other options (small loaves of bread & other versions of the classic cookie), but I decided to opt for the classic on my first visit. It was no average cookie - this was a LARGE cookie. I will unabashedly admit that it sat in its white bag next to me in bed for 3 days straight. Not because I wasn't enthusiastic about devouring it all on my walk back to the UES, but solely due to the fact that I couldn't manage to eat it in one go. Cookies are not my sweet vice of choice, but this was crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside & full of rich chocolate. A must stop if on the UWS & an easy walk from Central Park. I know, I know, what's with less than 5 stars? This place has a great history, reputation, and - of course - the cookies are delicious! So, first of all, the cookies are decadent. However...the dark chocolate chocolate chip was TOO MUCH CHOCOLATE? Ok, maybe it was a one time thing, but this time it was overload, and I actually craved something LESS chocolate. The peanut butter chips in the dark chocolate peanut butter was actually a welcome break to the chocolate overload. So, I was given a bite of the walnut chocolate chip cookie, not knowing what it was, and after a number of bites, I did not notice the walnut!!!!!! That's not to say it wasn't there, but I was really surprised that one of the classic ingredients was totally lost in the chewy, gooey, mess of deliciousness. But I'm being harsh. The cookies eat like a meal. A very unhealthy indulgent meal! One other knock, no fault of the product or the business, but a curse of popularity: while lining up at the 74th street location, was told that the location on Amsterdam and 77th had no line.....I don't know how many people they told, or if they were actually keeping tabs on the status of the locations, but a short walk over there - I was met with an equally long (if not longer line) at a bigger location. Humph. I probably would have fared better staying put in the tight 74th street location. Ah the things you do for a good cookie! read more
