This was a small, local spot off the main strip of the French Quarter. Not too far of a walk so easy to get to if you want to try something a bit less touristy. It def has your classic soul food options of gumbo, fried proteins, and homey red beans and rice. Service was great and the staff treated us kindly, welcoming us and letting us know where the takeout ordering was. We ended up getting gumbo and potato salad to go as we wanted to bring it to eat at city park. I think this is a spot where I wanted to like the food more than I did because of the friendliness of the staff and the local setting. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't a knockout for me and that may just be personal preference. The seafood gumbo was more soupy and less stewy (wasn't roux based which is how I grew up with gumbo). Flavor wise it was a bit of a miss for me as well, the seafood flavor was a bit fishy and the crab in my portion was a bit mushy and overcooked. The potato salad was good though and had a nice tang from the mustard. I do want to come back and try their other offerings though as the menu rotates and there's def a bunch of other dishes I'd love to try. read more

The seafood was tasty but they can afford to scale back on the salt a bit. The dirty rice was perfect. The mac was fine but nothing remarkable. Also, when we arrived, there was already a line, however, there is a system in place where someone waitlists you for a table and seat you as those tables become available. Lil Dizzy's Cafe was the best meal we had in NOLA hands down! We came as a party of 6 at 10:25am this Saturday morning just to be the first in line before they opened at 11am. Come early and come hungry! By 11am when they opened, there were more people outside than could fit inside so be prepared for a little wait. It's worth it though, trust me. Their menu is basically split between the all day everyday favorites, and their daily specials depending on when you come here. We had the pleasure of trying their smothered pork chops, fried chicken, fried catfish, garlic butter trout topped w/ crab, gumbo, mac n cheese, green beans, cornbread, potato salad, dirty rice, bread pudding, and mango lemonade. 10/10 this is some serious, home cooked, good eats! I can't wait to come back to New Orleans again just to come eat here. PS. The owner was extremely friendly. He came and personally checked on our table more than once. The Mrs. and I had lunch yesterday at Li"l Dizzy's Cafe. I wasn't familiar with Li'l Dizzy's. I just remember driving by it a few times being that it is only a few blocks from the Airbnb we were staying at. Dizzy's sits on the corner of Esplanade and N. Robertson. We arrived shortly before noon and managed to grab a small table outside. If the weather is nice, like it was yesterday, I suggest you do the same. The Mrs. went inside to grab a menu. A staff member inside told her to place our order at the counter when we were ready. The Mrs. ordered the two pieces of fried chicken with a side of fries. The chicken was great and the fries were cooked nice and crispy. NOLA, how come you do fried chicken so much better than anyplace else in the world? I ordered the gumbo which was really good. It was packed with lots of shrimp and andouille sausage. I added some Crystal to give it a little heat. I also ordered a side of Dirty Rice which is one of my favorite comfort foods. It was beautiful. The food is served in takeout containers so it is easy to transport your leftovers.....if you have any. By the time we left around 12:40 there was a line out the door. I visited here for the first time today. We arrived around 2:00 and they close at 3:00. We found nearby free street parking. There was a line and about a 35 min wait. The staff were helpful. This is a very casual place. There were only a few things on the menu that caught my interest. I ended up ordering the salad that with grilled shrimp on top and honey mustard salad dressing. I also had the strawberry lemonade. I enjoyed both. The food was served in styrofoam containers with plasticware. I was not expecting that. I am not sure if they didn't use actual dishes since it was close to closing time or if that's how they serve food at all times. I would return here. read more

Came to this spot based off a video I seen online and good thing we got there 20 minutes before opening cause there was a line already. That line was justified. The food and the service here was amazing. We shared catfish, 2 pieces of fried chicken, greens, mac and cheese, dirty rice, gumbo, and bread pudding. Made the trip from Los Angeles by way of a drive back from Tennessee...(road trip) Anyway I was watching a video on NOLA food tour YouTube. I pulled up and saw the line and I was like "Okay"...This wasn't a "hype" line, it was a "we rock with this place and don't mind a little wait" line. I ordered the 4 piece chicken, gumbo, yams, Mac & cheese. Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan lemme tell you, that chicken was . It's like house chicken, like chicken YOU MAKE AT YOUR HOUSE, it was crispy and juicy. The meat and the skin had flavor, I wanted to buy more to put in my pockets for the drive back to LA. All the sides hit, those yams had something special to them and I couldn't quite pin it down, but I rock with them. She chatted with us about the history and the effort to keep the food consistent with the family recipes. My husband is gluten-free, so he talked to the chef, and they made his catfish separate with cornmeal only. They were super accommodating. The food was bussing! The restaurant is located in the Treme Neighborhood! The menu offerings made it hard to decide, but decided on Catfish Platter (Mac & Cheese and Candied Yams); my friend chose Fish & Grits! We were extremely satisfied with our choices..we shared our dishes and wished we had room for more...but the serving size was plentiful and delicious! The staff greeted you upon arriving and the efficiency of serving customers is challenging because the interior of the establishment is small, but there is outdoor seating to accommodate the overflow! While visiting the New Orleans area we had heard about this place and had to try it. It's located in the Treme section of Nola in a neighborhood area. Even though the restaurant was busy we were able to get a table outside which was nice. Orders are taken at the counter and delivered to your table. The employees were very nice and efficient to say the least. The food was amazing. If you want some authentic NOLA style meals this is a great place. The fried shrimp and catfish are fantastic as were the greens and Mac and cheese I had for sides. The buffet is gone!! I didn't look into it myself, but a friend was planning a bunch of things, and we came intentionally for brunch... and they no longer have that. We got there right when they opened, and the line was forming, whew! The lady in charge was on point about handing out menus and getting the line organized for the rush. And it paid off! She told us to be ready to order when we got to the counter and to say what table we'd be sitting at (after telling us which ones were available). That process went smoothly. The special for the day was trout with two sides. I got it along with mac and cheese and greens. Overall it was a good array, but the greens were my favorite. They were the most flavorful out of everything... the other items didn't hold the same amount of flavor as I remembered Li'l Dizzy's food having years ago. I had hot sauce, but back then I wouldn't really need it. A nice addition to the menu was cocktails -- whiskey peach tea and vodka strawberry lemonade specifically. Having tasted both, I found the latter to be a little too sweet for my taste. The tea was excellent though. So happy finally was able to have lunch at Lil Dizzy's this past January. Amazing highly recommend. Make sure you give yourself time to find parking and look at the menu while you wait in line. When we got there sure enough there was a long time. We asked to see the menu while we wait and put our names down to eat lunch outside. To my surprise saw Arkesha and bought their cookbook. We asked if we can please take a picture with her as I'm a big fan. Even though it was busy she was kind enough to talk with us and take a picture. Much love for her and grateful. I ordered the catfish jourdain, mac and cheese, and sweet potatoes. Hubby ordered the fried chicken with sweet potatoes and Mac and cheese. We shared and agree that everything was delicious. Flew all the way to Nawlins to check out Lil Dizzy's and man it was definitely worth the trip. From the time you hit the doorway you are greeted and ushered in to the hustle and bustle of good music, food and vibes. This small but quaint restaurant is nothing short of delicious. We tried a lil bit of everything. Seafood gumbo, red beans and rice, fried chicken,collard greens, candied yams and catfish...oh and I can't forget the cornbread. I got the chance while at Essence Fest to visit Lil Dizzy's Cafe. The line was out the door, which is a good sign. The lady taking names for seating was great!! She was very engaging while moving the line along. I sat at the bar and ordered 2 pieces of chicken and red beans and rice, it also came with a piece or corn bread. The chicken took me back to when I was a child visiting relatives and they would cook, not fancy just home cooking. The red beans and rice were delicious and seasoned perfectly. The restaurant with pictures of the owner and family members gave it a very intimate feeling as if you were eating at someone's home. Wonderful people with amazing food. They have an efficient system that keeps everything fresh, yet welcoming. Owner Arkesha greeted everyone and explained the ordering process while customers were in line, making sure everything went smoothly. Inside, the restaurant was pretty cozy, but filled with character. We absolutely loved the artwork done by local school students. You can really feel their sense of community and pride. It's simply beautiful. Now, the food. We had the catfish platter with a side of collard greens and Mac n' cheese, the redfish and shrimp special, 8 pc fried chicken, red beans and rice, candied yams, gumbo, and bread pudding. Southern food at its finest! When we got there we were immediately greeted outside the front door. She handed us the menu told us the specials for that day and then asked us to wait until a table freed up. Once inside you go the counter, order your food, pay and then they bring the food to your table. I wasn't leaving without tasting their fried chicken since everyone was raving about it and it was the best choice ever! It's came out freshly fried, chicken skin golden and crispy not oily at all and seasoned perfectly.
