My son, who works at the Home Depot at Bitters and 281, has been raving about the food at this place for weeks. I got really excited when he told me about it because they have all the "organ meats" we love: cabeza, lengua, tripas, etc. We saw this location last week when we were eating pho next door. I remember it opened as one of two Krystal Burgers in San Antonio. Unfortunately, the burgers didn't go over here. I don't know what else has been in this location since. I never paid attention. Today, I had a rare Saturday physical therapy appointment and decided to drive here and grab some takeaway to see if my son was right about it. I should have known not to doubt him! I ordered a cabeza burrito and a tripas taco. When I got home, I could not believe how huge they were and how much meat was stuffed inside them. I ate half of each of them before I had to stop. They were both absolutely delicious.I am not a fan of the tiny pieces of tripas, but they were perfectly cooked and plentiful. The cabeza was gooey and greasy like old fashioned barbacoa before most places started serving pulled pot roast instead. Next time, I will stick to tacos, as the burrito is way to much for me, even if I had not ordered the extra taco. The restaurant was very clean. The people that served me were very nice. I've been searching for a taco shop with a bomb salsa bar and finally stumbled upon one a few miles from my house. They have fresh limes, carrots and jalapeños. 6 different fresh made salsas to feed your heat thresholds at any level. We decided to sit down and order from the sweet waitress. She was wearing many hats and never flinched at any of our requests. She was a seasoned professional. Breakfast Burritos in the $8-$9 range. Daily specials and taco specials sound really good. This was the portion for their carne asada fries, small, super small. Now we cannot order a half order of carne asada fries, and we forced to order a full size with their policy. One would expect that when paying a higher price for a larger portion, that you would receive more food, but clearly that wasn't the case. I got a dessert of tres leches which was vanilla. Good, but I could've done without the cinnamon on top. It's was prepackaged so I couldn't have it without. There's a salsa bar with varying levels of heat, but let me tell you, as someone who likes a bit of a kick, even the mildest salsa was pretty pica. Our waitress was an adorable and friendly young woman who is still learning English and from what I could tell was the only employee who could speak any English at all. After grabbing an Uber order from this restaurant I decided this was my next place to try. The "Salsa bar" sold me! 6 different kinds of fresh made salsa, pickled spicy jalapenos and carrots, plus lime slices. The menu is pretty large ranging from Breakfasts deals (3 breakfast tacos - eggs with either bacon , chorizo or potato and cheese for $3.99) to full combo plates of Carnitas to Tortas. They also have a wonderful choice of smaller plates like a Cabeza taco with rice and beans for $5.75 or Fish taco with rice and beans for same price. I chose the 2 crunchy chicken tacos with rice and beans for $8.00. We were brought a warm basket of chips and got to go chose our own salsas etc from the "salsa bar". My go to is always SALSA VERDE- it was amazing. Their pickled carrots are to die for. I must have eaten 8 or 9 pieces. They also have a great choice of desserts. Cheesecake, Tres Leche , and Chocolate Ganache. For my meal and my daughter's plate of Carnitas plus Tres Leche to go and 2 drinks we only spent $30.01. With leftovers! Simply outstanding. The service at 6 a.m. was cheerful and with a smile but the food. Whew, let's talk about that. First delicious. Second holy goodness and all things that make you happy. This size of the burrito was enormous. Burger King has the "eggnormous" burrito but this puts that baby burrito to shame. Look I'm not small and I love my food. I eat not until I'm full but I eat until it is gone. I could not finish this monster. And the bacon??? Tons of it and big enough to actually know there was bacon there, but there was not so much that it was overpowering. Simply put it was dare I say, a perfect burrito. Now since it was six in the morning and I was using the drive-through I didn't go in, so I don't know how the inside ambience was, but I can tell you there was enough locals in there That the authenticity of this food, and this establishment was beyond reproach. My wife and I love a good salsa bar and there were numerous options with varying flavor and heat signatures here. Jalapeño and carrot mixtla was the best part of the trip. Our waitress was polite but didn't stop by to refill our coffee(which was lukewarm), didn't bring our guacamole, and brought chorizo & egg and bean taco that was not so good instead of a chorizo bean and bacon. I ordered an asada with cilantro/onion that was fairly redeemable yet gristly and needed salt. The bean & cheese taco was flavorless, so I added salt, cilantro, salsa verde to resuscitate it from the grave. Y NADA! Great little hidden taco joint. The food was great here. There's a lot of meat to choose from and the price is decent. Tacos are legit for sure when you want to grab some food at 2 AM. Eh Los Balito's...I feel you're better in memory than in execution. We've visited this location a handful of times, post Sea World, and while we leave full, we don't seem to leave satisfied. Service is acceptable, never overly friendly, engaged, or in tune with our wants/needs. The restaurant itself is fine, self seating. Last time we visited there were lots of dirty tables scattered all around and we had a bit of a wait before someone finally came over to get our order. After a short wait our food arrived. Flavor wise I've always felt there's something missing and this last trip we finally figured it out: it's just sorta bland. There's not a lot of flavor or seasoning. I had no idea how I wasn't aware of a taco restaurant, besides taco cabana and mama Margie's, that is open 24 hours. Showed up around 11pm and the place was full of patrons. They have great daily specials that run all day. On a Saturday they had a steak and shrimp burrito for under $6. The burrito was hardy with plenty of protein. I also tried the fish tacos on corn. The corn tortilla isn't homemade, but it served its purpose. They initially served the taco on flour, but then brought over corn tortillas. They have a salsa bar with every level of heat imaginable. They had a spot for warm onions and peppers, but they were out when I showed up. My only complain were the chips. They tasted stale even after we asked for a new order. You can either order at the counter or, if before midnight, a waitress will come to your table to take your order. They have drive though as well. Just thinking about Los Balito's gets my tummy rumbling. I've been coming here since I was in high school at Holmes. I used to skip class to grab bean and cheese tacos with my boyfriend. Now that I'm a working lady, I still come here. I like taking my white Austin friends here so they can experience what it's like to eat at a real Mexican fast-casual restaurant. I love how large their menu selection is and the prices are hard to beat. The daily specials are great as well. Don't be fooled by the guacamole! It looks strange, but it tastes yummy. Most recently, I've had the beef fajita special and the chicken taquitos. Both were great, but my plan is to order something different every time I come here. The fact that it's open 24 hours is a plus. I've never had bad service here either. The waitresses are always on top of it when it comes to refilling your drinks or coming back to your table to ask how you're doing. If you're looking for a quick Mexican bite, this is the place for you! Just be careful during lunch time as it gets packed with people very quickly. It might be helpful to find out when Holmes students go on their lunch breaks and avoid those times. One suggestion I have is to have an alternative to beans and rice as sides on plates. Las Palapas has sauteed zucchini, squash, onions, and tomatoes that you can substitute for beans and rice for an extra charge. I traditionally have a chimichanga on my birthday, because chimichangas are awesome, and so are birthdays. QED. For my officially late 30s/"omg is that a wrinkle?!" b-day, I got take out from Los Balitos aka Los Robertos. I don't know what's up with the name change, but the grub is the same ole, CalMex goodness. My home health aide, who picked up the plate, remarked that the place was squeaky clean, and the employees were all very helpful. I don't think that they've ever scored below a 91 on their health inspections. Everything tasted very fresh, which was most evident in the pico. The chimichanga was crispy without being greasy. The chicken filling was well seasoned, and seemed to be mostly lean cuts. I usually dump a ton of salsa in their rice, and this time was no different. I can't be wicked snotty about arroz from a drive through joint, though. That mild, red salsa is delicious, and goes perfectly on the rice, and the beans, so it's all good.
