Does not honor reservations(at the Mesa location!!). Made a reservation for 6:30 on Cinco de Mayo knowing it would be busy. Management decided to say no to reservations and did not even think to at least notify anybody who made reservations that night that they would not be honored. Super nice Tex- Mexican spot. We don't have enough of these joints in the valley. Big restaurant with lots of seating - would be great for a big group. The menu is new age Mexican with unique flavor profiles. The provided chips and salsa were great. We got the lamb adobo and the Camarones both were good- the lamb has a deep cinnamon flavor and the Camarones con Espinacas is a cream base with shrimp and spinach. Both were good. Loved it! My SIL stopped in here one day and then told me how good it was - and he went on and on! Within 2 weeks he said he'd eaten here 4 times. Finally, I gave in and said let's go and really see how good this place is. Wow! Starting with the chips and salsa; outstanding! The salsa is really flavorful and has a nice little bite to it; not over powering, but just the right amount of heat. My SIL also said the guac was delicious so we got a large - I would say it's way too much but it was also very good. But what really sold me wan the entree. He said he had talked to the owner on one of his previous visits be he recommended Puerco de Chipotle. IT WAS AMAZING!!! It was carnitas but in a nice red sauce that you'll end up using the great flour tortillas to soak all that red sauce up. This dish has to be one of the better Mexican food dishes I've had in Arizona. On a related note my wife loves green corn tamales and the best one she's found was at Jalapeno Inferno, until now! She said the green corn tamales here is as good as Jalapeno Inferno but the sauce here puts it over the top. Finished our meal with a single order of Carmel drizzled churros. Came with crema and cinimon ice cream - delicious. Needless to say we'll be back and although I loved the Puerco de Chipotle, I saw several other items on the menu I'm interested in trying - specifically the chilequilles! read more

We came at lunch and ordered from the lunch menu. Our entrees were both just okay, but their chips and salsa were really good. With that said, I feel like if we'd ordered a regular entree we may have felt differently. My mother passed away this morning. I woke to the news after saying goodbye over video chat last night (these are strange times we live in). When I decided to get out of bed finally a short time ago I thought while brushing my teeth: a moment like this needs a special meal. I decided Mexican was the right call and I spotted Los Sombreros as the first 4+ rating on the map near my home. So I came in and was greeted by one of the owners on arriving (I showed up at 11 on the nose). Having never eaten here I asked him to just make me his favorite dish. He took a moment to explain the restaurant's quality and approach to Mexican cuisine then recommended a carnitas platter. His choice was brilliant, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and have decided to come back again soon to explore more of the menu. I highly recommend a meal here. Sincere apologies for weaving the sad circumstances of my day into this review, but I feel like the world of online reviews could use a little more love and I have found the sharing cathartic. False advertising of menu options online vs. actual availability at restaurant. Claims to be wood fired were certainly not apparent as there was no wood fire stove or pit. Required reservations made it appear as an upscale restaurant and many tables were empty the entire stay of our meal. Their cadillac margarita with a grand marnier float was horrible - grand marnier float was far less than a normal shot and served in a convoluted half lime atop of the remainder of the margarita that tasted like Fresca soda. The food - no chile rellanos were available although their online menu offered as such. Restaurant menu showed no evidence of rellanos to be offered. We lucked into Los Sombreros because we needed a place that could accommodate our large party of eight. From the moment we walked in the door and heard singing from a guitar player with an amazing voice and smelled all the great food, we knew we'd found a gem. Our server was doing double duty as a bartender, and he was very attentive and the drinks were tasty. He recommended the queso fundido and the camarones al tequila, and they did not disappoint. The salsa and chips were plentiful and especially good. The singer covered "Black Hole Sun" and "Norwegian Wood" and he sounded amazing. Los Sombreros really deserves more than 5 stars. The experience from the very beginning was a pleasure. The building is nice and spacious. The food and drinks were amazing! Well proportioned and reassembly priced... The owner came out greeted us as well as the other patrons. He even shared the story of the building, decor and the difference between the styles of Mexican food. I went for dinner one evening and the next day I had to go back with co workers. We decided to try this place for the first time on a whim, as they are a short drive from our house. We were there during happy hour, but the server didn't give us a happy hour menu until I tried to order something that was on it unknowingly. He said they're changing seasons and apparently the menu changes soon. Hubby and I ordered house margaritas that were very tasty. Nothing artificial tasting in them, which is great for a happy hour house margarita. I ordered the happy hour Al pastor street tacos with a side of beans and hubby ordered enchiladas. The beans were quite good and the Al pastor was very juicy and flavorful. We also ordered the queso fundido. It was impossible to scoop up with a chip, as it was mostly just melted cheese. We cut it with a fork and were able to scoop it out, but it was just too rich for our blood. Our friends were also quite happy with their meal options and drinks. Beautiful building, we were promptly seated and drinks came out quickly. The prickly pear margarita was delicious! The food was another story. The chips and salsa was fine, nothing special. I ordered a relleno en nogada, a rare on the menu. It looked great garnished with pomegranate seeds. My pepper was not breaded so it lacked texture, the chicken inside was dry, and the sauce was lacking flavor. Worst of all my whole plate and food was cold. Not room temp, cold like it was put in the fridge. My wife was polite in the restaurant but later stated hers was some of the worst Mexican food she has ever had. Lacking flavor and everything tasted like it was from a can. Worst, the beans tasted as though they had burned at the bottom of the pan multiple times and had a terrible flavor. The specific Oxacan and well presented meals are the best/closest to those you can buy Oaxaca, Mex I had found in USA. I never understood why Mexican food places don't always make their guac fresh. This place does it right. Chips were warm. Salsa had great flavor. Ask for the habanero salsa and mix it in to add a delicious kick. Meal wise I had a dish that had a ribeye steak with shrimp in a Smokey enchilada type sauce. Beans were tasty. Rice had some kind of seasoning oregano? That was kinda strong. Hubby had the crispy chicken tacos and they looked good. He said he enjoyed them. What I appreciated was when I asked the server to describe the chili sauce that was served with my steak, if it was spicy he suggested right away I should try the sauce. So he went to the kitchen and came back with a bowl of it. It's smart when you think about it. Everyone has different taste buds and definition of what's spicy. Plus it saves the troubles of cooking it and having the diner send it back. So smart move. The entree was good. I think I would have went with a different cut of meat though and it would have been better. Even a sirloin maybe. The meat was just grizzly and fatty. Overall service was great! The restaurant was decorated nicely and seemed very clean. Chips and salsa were exceptional - the salsa is addictive. I had the sopes appetizer and the smoked chicken enchiladas. The sopes were very good and very filling. Honestly, you could easily share this appetizer with 3+ people; I was full after eating one of the three. The enchiladas had excellent flavor, but the chicken was extremely tough and chewy (reason for 4 stars instead of 5). Overall, this was a nice place to get some tasty Mexican food. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed a weekend lunch at Los Sombreros. The place is clean and the atmosphere is aesthetically pleasing. The service was excellent. The food is amazing. The ceviche appetizer is a generous helping and mouthwateringly delicious. The pork carnitas were out of this world. Before we ordered, the waiter told us that the pork was slow cooked for 16 hours. It was almost as tender as my mother's heart. And so tasty and moist. The veggie sides were delicious. The beans were prepared in-house. The waiter said that their ingredients are prepared on site, not from a can. The complimentary tortilla chips were warm, tasty and also baked in house, as was the thick and tasty salsa. The serving size is very generous. The desert menu sounds awesome, but we were full. So maybe on a return trip. I understand that the chef was trained in Mexico City. Well this was my first trip and definitely my last. I ordered tacos which is pretty basic and they brought me dried up tortillas with chunks of chicken and that's it. No lettuce, no sauce, no tomatoes just dried up tortillas. The service was subpar and it was a table of 12 of us. I sent my food back and they never asked if I wanted anything else or what was wrong with the food. The beans were salty. The rice was also dry. It was just nasty for basic food.
