I stopped by Los Sombreros to place a to go order for lunch, and had a great conversation with Adam, the owner. We talked about the history of the restaurant, and it's ties to Elote chef, Jeff Smedstad. I ordered the Solid Rock Chicken, which had a great smoky flavor, and a nice little kick to it. The drink menu looks great too. The restaurant was still undergoing some renovations, but looks much better than when the two previous building occupants (More vibrant and more light). Los Sombreros is one of my favorite choices for Mexican food. Authentic Mexican food inspired by familial dishes of Central Mexico with a warm & inviting, vintage Mexican look and feel. While I am partial to the Old Town Scottsdale one, I also love their location in Phoenix. I discovered the Mesa location recently when I attended a special Mezcal pairing dinner. This location is HUGE. They have everything: al fresco dining, bar seating, upstairs lounge with live music on Thursday nights. The second-floor dining area is really impressive and perfect if you need a space for a small private event that could hold 50-60 people comfortably. This is definitely a hidden gem in Mesa. I don't know how Los Sombreros does it, but they make the same consistently good food at all their locations! I would recommend skipping the guacamole here (it tastes great but you can get it anywhere) and go for the queso fundido instead. It is delicious! The chicken enchiladas are always a winner and the grilled ribeye steak tacos are my personal favorite. If you still have room for dessert, the flan is a must. It does not matter what you order, it is all delicious. The cocktails are of course great too and the Steve-a-Rita is their signature margarita and a must-try. I also appreciate that they have several draft beers available. Happy hour is weekdays from 3-6. Service is with a smile. If you ask a question, they do their best to answer and guide you through the menu. Many of these dishes are special and you won't find them in other Mexican restaurants in the Valley. It is OK to ask questions. I would come to this location more often if I lived closer. Pro tip: sign up for their email newsletter online to stay updated on special events as they do have many at their three different locations. Mole and mezcal, anyone? read more

They were packed at 745 Saturday night and we had about a 10 minute wait for our table, which was less than the time quoted. We immediately received chips and salsa, our waiter came quickly to bring drinks and take our order. Food took a little longer than expected but was all delicious. I'm disappointed to see the sweet pork dish is no longer on the menu as that was my favorite. I always order the sautéd veggies as my side, they are so fresh and delicious. The service was fantastic and they were attentive to chip and drink refills. The food is different from other Mexican restaurants and I appreciate that the food feels fresher and not greasy. The chips and salsa are excellent but I ordered the tacos and they came with a bunch of creamy stuff on side shell of the taco instead of inside and it made it really hard to eat! Awesome. We were driving by and looking for Mexican..reviews looked good so we turned around and had a great lunch. The decor is gorgeous. We sat outside in perfect weather. Dustin was our server, and Adam, the owner, came by our table and chatted for awhile. We were new to everything so he made us a tester of one of their carnita dishes. Adam! You were adorable and we loved everything. Photos from other reviews looked filling so we decided on the crab queso fundido starter and carnita plate. There's like 5 different choices with the queso. It's large enough for a meal, even for low carb and keto lovers. We definitely want to go back and try the others. Chips and salsa were perfect and plentiful. We didn't do alcohol this trip, maybe next time. The carnitas were cooked perfectly and the taster of the carnita puerco en chipotle sample was fabulous. Very kind host that immediately brought chips, salsa and waters after being seated. Decor and Atmosphere was enjoyable and menu appeared to be great. Not 1 server approached our table to greet us or take our drink/food order. After 40 minutes and finishing our chips and water we walked out. The servers (all seated at the bar enjoying their drinks) gave a friendly waive and told us to have a good evening to which we replied, "We were never served!" Salsa wasn't too spicy, very fresh, made daily. The guac was nice and chunky. My partner had Camaron Con Espinacas with black beans n rice. That's shrimp with a chipotle cream sauce. This might be the best food I've had in a decade! Definitely go! Don't be scared by the prices, it's worth every penny. Also, they cook with corn oil, so soy-free people can eat with peace of mind. I have the three soft (corn) grilled steak tacos. INCREDIBLE! They look small but they will fill you up. I had the black beans....have the black beans they are pure loveliness. And the veggies, which are carrots, bell peppers, and zucchini julienned and stir fried. Their homemade chips are epic and their salsa has a kick without being too hot. My grandparents each had a margarita. They said it was the best they've had. My grandma couldn't finish her pork mole but she said it was exquisite. It was a huge helping of it with fresh tortillas. Since then have been back 3 times because we're so excited to finally have a Mexican restaurant that we love! The service has been amazing every time we've been. The prices are reasonable. We were a party of 9 and were seated in a cozy semi-private, open space inside. Welcomed warmly as we arrived by several employees, our server Daisy was wonderful. The owner visited us several times throughout our meal, checking on us and seeing if they could help with anything else. We had a lot of varied dishes and would order it all again. Don't miss out! Our first night after arriving in Phoenix and we just finished an awesome meal! We picked Los Sombreros based on Yelp reviews while sitting in the parking lot of another nearby restaurant. Glad we did! The chips are crispy and light served with a house salsa you can't get enough of. We had a Chicken Enmolades and ribeye with bacon tacos, very tasty! The sides of rice and refried beans were very good as well. The dining area is clean and well lighted. The staff friendly and attentive. The food is 10/10. The service requires lots of patience but at no fault to the waitresses. I've never experienced a restaurant where your server was the hostess/waitress/bartender/runner ... you get the idea. It's the most inefficient process I've ever encountered and really sets them up for failure. While I will return because the food was amazing, I witnessed 2 parties walk out because after 15 mins they hadn't even been greeted at the front door. My husband sat at the bar for 10 without even a hello... which we realized why later. just a weird restaurant dynamic and I can't imagine how much money the staff/owners lose as a result. read more

We decided to sit upstairs and was told there would be some music/DJ setting up there near bar, so take that option if you're looking for lively dinner vibe. My date had the 3 Al Pastor Tacos with side of beans and mixed vegetables. I had the Camarones Al Tequila (Shrimp) with beans and rice. Everything had a great presentation and tasted delicious!! I had the green corn tamales and they were delicious! Their menu is very clearly marked for dietary restrictions which was incredibly helpful! As someone who is both vegetarian and (mostly) gluten free there were a lot of options and they were easy to identify on the menu. Service was great and the space was really nice. There are a lot of different types of seating arrangements and would be great for a group meal. I definitely will be going back because there are several other dishes I want to try! read more

I was super excited to visit this restaurant. We figured it must be something special if they can charge $18 for an enchilada. My wife had the carnitas, it was okay but go up the street to the Ranch Market if you want carnitas. I had the pechuga rellena. The chicken was pretty dry, the flavor was kind of one note, just kind of flat. Felt like it needed a squeeze of like or something. The worst thing though were the refried beans and rice. A Mexican restaurant has got to have good beans. They were really bland and dry. The other people with us commented on it also. Or servers were great, that was the highlight of there visit. Even though they redid the inside, it still somehow feels like the 1980s. That place has felt cold and uncomfortable no matter what restaurant has been in there.
