What was a 5 star dropped to 1 star from lack of communication over a simple inquiry into our final bill. I suspect more nefarious intent for choosing a 65 year old senior citizen to assist in an issue with a very heavy set patron in the parking lot vs selecting an employee of the establishment to avoid potential litigation. All in all, my positive experience changed after receiving zero communication from the management team. read more

The must have changed ownership or something. It's been at least a year or so since I have been in, but it's quite different now. The menu, which used to be ornate and interesting, with lots of history and flavor text, is now two sheets of paper printed in the back office with names, basic descriptions and pictures that look like the printer was out of red.... The prices are crazy. $15 for queso? Really? And the food seemed to be a step down in quality as well. The CFS was just ok. The enchiladas were so-so. The salad was mostly the white parts of the lettuce. The cornbread was still good. And we were sat in the bar where the service was severely lacking. We had to ask for water to be refilled several times. Had to wait too long between ordering appetizer and entree. If we needed anything at all, we had to wave him down or find another waiter to help us. Used to be great. Not any more. read more

There is no question this is the place to go to for Texas inspired foods. If meat is on your list, then they have you covered for sure! I had the boar which was flavorful. My husband's steak was a good size, and he also found lots of fat on the cut limiting the actual amount of meat. This is why I'm giving them only 3 stars. We were intrigued by the number of people coming in while we were there for the evening's live music which was being performed on the other half of the restaurant. Love and War is near a haunted house that my friends and I go to regularly. I realized I hadn't ever been to one of these; and if I had it was when I was young enough to not remember. My husband and I had plans before the haunt, and needed to kill time and grab food so we went ahead and came here. Staff did an outstanding job. Food was decent enough; though on the higher end of what I like too pay at our more locally owned favorites. We have a few more places that I would like to try in the area; but this is a reasonable spot if we have folks that would prefer to try something they already know vs something new. read more

My wife and I came up here for dinner in between events we had in the area. There are things like the haunted house nearby. It also looks like they regularly have live music in the bar area; but if you want to sit in a different area there is that available. Prices are a little higher than what we pay for similar things at hole in the wall places we go; but about average for what we expect in the area for sit down chains. I enjoyed the seasoning they added to their fried pickles and my meal was decent enough. Not sure if we will make regular visits when we are over here because there are a number of other places we want to try near by; but we at least know there are options here we would try if we do make it back over here again. read more

Visit for the first time and last time tonight. Yes we had a large party that had reservations. Started off with great service and went down hill from there. Waiter only took nine orders, then did not come back to finish taking the rest of the tables orders. Another waitress came over took a few then turned them in. Needless to say, they did not have enough help. Watched what appeared to be the owner or partner watch as and not help or ask how is your visit. The food was cold, tomatoes did not taste like a tomato no taste. Overheard a waiter say the kitchen was backed and they would just have to wait. Poor management!!! We've seen this place multiple times as we live near by and finally had a chance to try it! I got the filet mignon & mashed potatoes which was very good. We also had fajitas, a ribeye, and baby back ribs. Everything was yummy except for the baby back ribs were dry. Our waiter was great though and once we told him offered a replacement for it. Never heard of this place.. it's nice if you're in the area. Early weekend night and there was no wait. It was decently busy though. The restaurant is pretty big. Parking lot was pretty full by the end of the night. It is really loud, so hard to have a conversation I think... Menu is HUGE and everybody will find something they want! Everything from tex mex to typical American. I feel like steaks are a go to for a lot of people. Food portions are big too!! Got the chicken fried steak ($16) and comes with a side. Got a side of cole slaw. I wish there was more cole slaw - I enjoyed it. The chicken fried steak was HUGEEE though. Definitely couldn't finish it. And it'd be good for 2 people. First time ever coming here and left a little disappointed. However, still may be worth a shot for you! We came in just after 5pm on a Friday and we were the ONLY customers there. We stoop at the front for maybe 2 minutes before an employee walked by. We thought maybe they were closed but the employee said no, they were open. After we got sat, our server was really nice and friendly. We order the Wagon Wheel (fried pickles) as an appetizer. They were pretty good. My wife ordered the brisket and okra. She was not a big fan of her plate. Said the okra was over salted and the brisket was mediocre. I did try the okra and can confirm, it was a bit salty. I ordered the wild roasted boar. It was actually really good! The onions, mushrooms and the meat were all seasoned really well. The boar was very tender and flavorful. We went for my Husband's birthday and waited a bit before being greeted. We were sat near a large party with a screaming child running around in a nearly empty restaurant with exception to the bar which seemed semi full. We ordered our drinks and I ordered a mojito which I should mention WAS on their drink menu. I was brought back what tasted like a margarita made with rum. It was disgusting because a mojito should never be made with sweet and sour!! I told the server that the drink wasn't drinkable and he took it away and still charged us for it too. Then our salads came out and we took one bite before our food was served to us. Super basic dishes. They don't garnish or anything. I got a pork chop and mashed potatoes on my plate and that's it. Because our server couldn't even be bothered with walking around the table to serve my husband his plate the server literally handed him his huge steak plate from across the table and in front of my father in laws face!! Crazy tSo while my pork chop was tasty it wasn't worth being made to feel like we were burdening them. We actually felt like we should've apologized for bothering them. Rating: 2.5 stars I came with a group of four for a musical fundraiser. We paid a cover of 15 dollars per person and we're allowed to sit in the covered "outdoor" seating area. We could choose any seat we wanted. The space was large and nice. They mostly had elevated tables and chairs which were on a slant and uncomfortable to sit on for long periods of time though. Service was pretty abysmal. There was only two servers for the whole area and so it took forever to get food and drinks or even orders stated. We ordered WAGON WHEELS which was a fried pickle appetizer for the table. The fried pickles were nice and yummy and the Smokey ranch dressing was delicious. Portion size was also huge. Definitely a must order. For my main I ordered the SHRIMP TEXANA. There was only a small handful of plump shrimp. Flavor was ok and they were very well cooked and juicy. They gave a huge scoop of pico on the side which was way more than was needed with the small amount of shrimp they gave. The order came with one side so I ordered the steamed veggies and also mashed potatoes as an extra side. The mashed potatoes were yummy and came with a great cream gravy. The veggies unfortunately were very lacking and not good at all. All in all, a disappointing night but at least there was a pro of lots of live music to enjoy while eating our food. read more

I ordered a med-rare ribeye steak, it was thin and tough. Not worth $30. The sautéed green beans were pretty good. They didn't seem to have enough wait staff as service was slow. Our ticket was charged full price for the wine, that was ordered during happy hour, the waiter did correct the ticket. We will not be coming back. I wish there was a little more traffic, but that's what Yelp is for! When walking in on Sunday evening I was concerned that it was closed, outside of the handful of cars. Once inside, I'd easily give this spot a 4+, but there are some things to note: 1. It has definitely changed. If you have been here in the past, it's not the same. Don't compare it to days of old. 2. Service can be slow. There isn't a lot of traffic, so rather than hover you sometimes don't see the staff. Not your spot if you want to be wined and dined. 3. My experience didn't include a live music act so no comment on that experience. This is an old Texas joint. I'd almost call it a sleepy vibe, with a GREAT soundtrack of old school county playing in the background. Service is friendly, but not in the bright-eyed bushy tail kind of way. Expect to grab their attention. The food is GOOD. It has the taste of homemade food, like you're at a friend's kitchen. Not everything has been workshopped but you're happy to try it again and again. I can't say I've had anything bad there. Today we got queso and chips, street brisket tacos, and a side salad. Everything was solid. I wish they would offer TWO sides per entree, as I like variety. My father and I both went tonight to go see the Council Hill members playing and to try their food. It was already a lot of money for a table, $80 plus the 2 tickets we had purchased. Mind you, we live an hour away so it isn't an easy drive. We walked in, got our wrist bands and found our table. We had a waiter come by and take our drink order. This was around 7:06 pm. 20 minutes passes. No one came to our table. My father and I are thinking, okay it's busy we will give them some leniency. He goes out to where we got the wrist bands asking how to order food, he got told, that someone will come to us. So he came to sit back down. Then it becomes 30 minutes where we have no one coming to take our order. At this point we are pissed. The waiter had helped other tables, yet chose to ignore us. 40 minutes we're sitting there not even hungry at this point. My father starts waving the menu in the air hoping someone would come. Nope. Then he stood on the chair. Still nothing. A lady to the table next to us told us, she had to flag the waiter down so he'd come. Another waiter came to a table in front of us and my father asked "Hey. Can you take my order afterwards?" The guy nodded but walked away. At this point it's been almost 50 minutes. A lady is handing food 2 tables over when the people in front of us are asking to help MY table. The waitress said "it isn't my section" okay. I work in a restaurant I understand that. But there was no reason she couldn't have said to give her a second and she'll get our waiter. It had been an hour and we walked out. My father is getting a refund for the tickets. We never made a scene either, we sat there patiently for half an hour then started to try and get waiters/waitresses attention. I called the restaurant once I got home asking for our waiters name. The host said he wasn't sure if he could give it. And I told him that I work in a restaurant and yes he can. He went to get the manager and I asked for the waiters name. Just to then find out that no one was signed to not just my table, but NINE other tables. But those tables got their food taken and placed. Why couldn't we get our food taken? I explained that I also was a manager at one point, and that as a manager your responsibility is to ensure everything is ready and clear with all employees. Clearly, things were not ready and not clear with all employees. Since no one picked up the assigned tables they should have been physically assigned to whom was working. This was ridiculous. Only positive thing I'd say is the fact the restaurant is clean. read more

We went to see a band play and had purchased a table right in front of the stage. When we got the table turned out to be one of those bar height ones. I am in a wheelchair so that wouldn't work. After arguing with the manager, the waitress and owner swapped out the table to a regular height table. I appreciate that. The band was great. Sound is pretty good there. We had a strawberry spinach salad, hamburger, chicken sandwich and chicken tenders. All were pretty good. The black raspberry martini tasted like lipstick to me. Just my opinion. Since we are from Illinois we probably won't be back any time soon but we would go again. read more

I wasn't sure about this place when friends who moved to Texas suggested it but I'm glad we went. It's the quintessential Texan place to eat at, often accompanied by live country music. We got the sample platter as our app and everything was delicious despite being fried and not so "health conscious". Went here on a Thursday night, and we were completely ignored. A waitress came from the outside, socialized with a group of patrons at a large table, that was right by the front door. Never asked if we were being helped, just walked away, and went back outside. We waited 5 more minutes, and no one came to welcome us or seat us. What else are they ignoring? Turned and left. Tonight we went to Love & War in Texas for our anniversary dinner. We hadn't been here in probably 10 years and we wanted to do something different. They were definitely not busy. We were seated quickly, the server came right over and drinks were brought quickly. It was a little dark in many parts of the dining area but that may have been because they were slow? The food used to be really good, or at least the chicken fried steak was, because that was my go to. For a starter we ordered the nacho libre with beef Texas style which was mediocre at best. My husband ordered the Big Tex chicken fried steak and a side of mashed potatoes. The batter on the chicken fried steak was not great texture wise and lacked flavor, the meat was not properly pounded/tenderized and was slightly tough and dried out. I ordered the cowboy rib eye steak and the steak just wasn't a good cut. Lots of connective tissue... lacked flavor. The steak was however cooked a perfect medium rare as ordered. The steak sauce and weird cold black eyed pea salad were awful. The mashed potatoes or the gravy (not sure which) were very salty and I really like salt, so if I think it was salty... it was salty. The waiter was a really nice kid, got my husband's side wrong but rectified it immediately. All in all the service was fine but the food did not meet expectations, especially for the price. That steak was definitely not a $36 cut and the food wasn't worth $85 total. I have no problem paying for good food, but I left disappointed. Ok, so it was a Wednesday night and the only thing going on was happy hour from 4-7pm. The food was good. The waiter did bring drinks when guests arrived, but he didn't write anything down...so he got all the checks wrong for our party of six. When asked what is on draft, the waiter would say "we have a lot of different ones and they change all the time" which was less than helpful. First I want to start by saying I am typically good at finding positives in any situation. With that said, unfortunately, I am unable to remain positive when reflecting on my experience at Love and War in Texas. My fiancé was was looking for something fun to do on a Saturday night. We did a good search and found a place called Love and War in Texas which according to the website has great food and live music. Great, sounds exactly like what we are are looking to do. I looked at the photos, the decor looks nicely done, looks clean and modern. We decided this is the spot to go. Upon arrival, the outside looks great and what we expected and shortly learned the interior had an equal approval. Only one problem, as soon as we walk in... no music...no crowd waiting for one either. We get seated and start questioning each other as to where the music was. That's when we noticed a sign apologizing for the no live bands due to renovations that werenon existent. We thought ok well that is a bummer and wasn't sure of what renovations they were referring to but ok we are not going to bail being this far in. We got menus and were told our server would be with us shortly. After watching what we believe to have been our server walk past us several times and not once acknowledging we were there we knew it was going to be a while. But going against our guts we still did not give up. Our waitress finally greeted us with a nice smile which helped ease our concerns. We ordered drinks and Texas cornbread. Shortly after we ordered our main course and we were on our way to enjoy our evening. I ordered the meatloaf and my fiancé ordered the filet. For a "Texas" styled restaurant two easy dishes that can't go wrong. Right? Wrong, my fiancé ordered his filet butterflied and medium. He cut into it and it was literally raw, yet burnt on the outside and oh so thin for an 8oz butterflied filet. He asked for ketchup and got a off brand bottle of ketchup. Can you say cheap and the skin on his baked potato was gritty like it had not been washed prior making. My meatloaf was hard with very little flavor. The baked beans came in a 3oz ramican( very small ) and 1 small scoop of mashed potatoes. I was only able to eat two bites of the meatloaf and ate all the beans and potatoes. When the waitress came to clear the table she asked if I wanted a to go box and I said no. The natural follow up question would have been I noticed you only ate two bites of your meatloaf was anything wrong. Nope, she never acknowledged my food was almost not touched. We got our bill and a tab of $93 for cheap, terribly cooked food with horrible service. We walked out, completely disappointed. We will never return and spread the word to our family and friends...as well as y'all. read more

Haven't been here in a while so we thought we'd give it another try. At one time we ate here at least once a week. A few years ago the owner sold the restaurant and food prices went up and quality went down. One of my favorite things was the Bandera Chop. It was a thick cut pork chop perfectly cooked and it was huge. I ordered it this evening. When they set the plate down I thought it was a joke. But no, no it wasn't a joke. It was a thin cut chop like you'd but at a grocery store and it was tiny. $20 for one tiny thin pork chop. Needless to say, we'll never be back again. No wonder the place was empty. It was Wednesday date night, and I had found this place on Google while we were running errands. We had been here before but didn't remember if it was thumbs up or not. The parking lot is big, and the setup outside screams, eat, and drink outside. We entered, and the restaurant was empty. You need to wait to be seated, and we were escorted to our booth. The restrooms are in the back of the building as you enter, and they are well kept. From the moment we met our server, she was awesome and pleasant. We arrived in time for the happy hour with appetizers and drinks, so we ordered the deep fried bacon and placed our order for ribs and enchiladas. The food arrived quickly, and the service was excellent. The bacon had a unique yet good taste. I recommend it. The ribs and okra were nothing out of the ordinary but good. The brisket enchiladas didn't go well as the mother of the cashew only ate the brisket due to the tortilla. The margarita was a pleasant addition to the experience. There were some issues with Happy Hour prices that were addressed. Sixty dollars for two was ok due to the customer service and company. I say try the place. read more
