Last week I ordered several items from LuckyBolt for home delivery. All of them were good, but the Tofu of Destiny and the local kombucha in "Dragon Slayer" flavor were both exceptional. The tofu was the perfect blend of firm and soft, with a sort of miso-sesame-chile tasting marinade that was heavenly. The kombucha, as advertised, did not have a strong vinegar taste and wasn't too sweet, so I really enjoyed drinking it. (Normally I don't like kombucha.) The gluten-free biscuits had a very nice, dense yet flaky-crumbly texture and the local eggs and "Bowl of Goodness" were very good also. I also love that they source from local farmers. I plan to order again this week and look forward to trying more items! read more

I have to pay the ultimate compliment to LuckyBolt, so here it is... it's like Kristopher Schlesser opened this business just for me...yes, li'l ol' me... figuratively speaking, of course. There ain't nothin' little about me or my appetite or my desire to satiate my foodie sensibilities even if, like everyone else, I am constrained by the geography of an office job. Yes, I get tired of the nearest Mixt Greens, Specialties, Harvest & Rowe or whatever packaged, overpriced salad and/or sandwich I seem destined to have as a result of lazy habits and limited time. Even the availability of the wonderful bún riêu at Soup Junkies can't get my machine cranking because I simply want more variety to my palate. Enter LuckyBolt which Schlesser has ingeniously conceived as a way for us office workers to gain access to over thirty restaurants outside of the reasonable radius of my office without breaking a sweat. Total elapsed time is about five minutes to pick it up...seriously. All you do is sign up with your email address and cell phone number, add a credit card, and place an order from their daily menu. Generally, Luckybolt provides selections from two to three of the restaurants the evening before, including several vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. You need to place your order by 10AM or earlier if it's a popular item since they can sell out as word spreads. Then one of their "bike runners" shows up at 11:30AM on the southeast corner of Market and Beale with his or her impressive German-made insulated storage units (see photo). Between 11:30AM and 1PM, you pick up your order. Because you paid online and can even tip online through their Good Karma menu button, you don't even have to take out your wallet. It's that simple. I've tried it twice quite successfully. First, I ordered the $9 Vegan Tamale Pot Pie from Mission Pie, quite savory delicious and more flaky crust than a flake like me deserves (see photo). The second time, I tried the $12.50 Pozole Rojo from Nopalito, which came in two parts. Inside a cardboard box were the tortilla chips, onions, ancho chile flakes, oregano, and shredded cabbage. The rich red soup filled with cubes of tender pork shoulder and hominy was poured into a sturdy plastic container. Taped on top were very specific instructions on how to assemble the dish (see photo), and the result was a spicy, savory delight that now allows me a sneak preview of what an actual visit to Nopalito would be like (see photo). And just remember, it took me all of five minutes to retrieve it. I can tell I'm on an addiction track because I just ordered my lunch for tomorrow. I'm getting the $8.98 Sometimes I'm a Vegetarian Sandwich from Ike's Place, which I know will be great since I was an early patron of the vastly popular Ike. There are plans to add another pick-up location at California and Kearny, and apparently sixteen other locations under consideration. I'm sure there are other out-of-the-way restaurants that could greatly benefit from this type of exposure. Yesterday I just happen to be at 1058 Hoagies, where they create massive hoagies that are the bomb, but sadly, they are only open during the lunch hours on weekdays in SoMa. How great would it be to add them to this service. FOOD - 5 stars...not only for the variety every day but for the top-notch quality of the take-out food AMBIANCE - n/a...not really relevant, is it? Get your orders in online, and they will have your food delivered between 11:30am-12:30pm. By experience, LuckyBolt has always delivered food on time for our company, tried and true. They also use paper packaging for the meals, doing their part in eliminating plastic waste, reducing carbon footprint and making our Earth happy! Because the prices are slightly higher than what I am comfortable paying for, such as $8.65 for a smoothie or $9.65 for a Tomato Soup and 1/2 Grilled Cheese Sandwich, I prefer to bring my own lunch to work. On days that I am really swamped, our company will order from LuckyBolt for us. The meals are very healthy using fresh ingredients. Most recently my teammate had bought me a: - Rainbow Veggie Noodle Bowl ($10.65): made from fresh carrot, zucchini, and bell pepper noodles tossed with sesame seeds, green onions, and cilantro. Topped with marinated grilled San Diego Soy Dairy tofu and avocado whip. Spicy Thai peanut dressing on the side. The avocado whip was very creamy and did not turn brown even when I stored the leftovers in the fridge overnight. My employer started working with LuckyBolt late last year and it has made life so so much easier. As a new mom who sometimes just doesn't have time to pack a healthy lunch, I truly appreciate that I have healthy fresh options to choose from daily- sourced from reputable local restaurants with a good deal of choices in the menu everyday. They deliver good quality food consistently and are always on time. Some of the restaurants I personally prefer are Rubicon Deli, The Kebab Shop , PrepKitchen .... A few I don't care for much but that could just be a personal preference. Their customer service is excellent- prompt and courteous. I have requested for alterations to my order like omitting tomatoes or substituting a condiment and they have always done so. On one occasion, I placed the order on their recent SMS service while not making the cut off time to order. When I wrote to them inquiring about my "missing lunch" they were extremely prompt in looking into what went wrong and very kindly offered to bring out a lunch rather than have me go hungry. I had already hit the vending machine in a hypoglycemic haze but I truly appreciated the gesture on their behalf. Also, for every dollar spent you earn a point and you earn a free lunch every $100 points. This was the old system and apparently they are upgrading to something new that's in the works. I have a love-hate relationship with LuckyBolt. I love the convenience of this service and their healthy meal options. They have amazing customer service -- they are quick to respond whenever I have questions or issues with my meals. What I haven't loved so much are the issues I've had with my meals lately. Within two weeks I had two issues: 1) I ordered a meal with tofu yet was sent a meal with chicken. Being plant-based, this was a major problem as I wasn't able to eat my order. The funny thing was that the label on the container said "tofu." Thankfully, LuckyBolt was quick to respond to my email to them regarding this and were willing to send me a refund. 2) Simply, there was a hair in my food. A straight, black piece of hair. *sigh* I didn't notify them about this one because, honestly, I had to run to a meeting and didn't want to deal with it at the moment. We had the eggplant shakshuka for dinner tonight and loved it. It was a new take on shakshuka (to us anyway). It was perfectly spiced and delicious. The overall concept of Luckybolt is great as well. They source ingredients from local farms and sell their tasty creations (weekly meal, salads, soups, hand pies, etc) plus other options (like kombucha, eggs, etc) on their website. Service was great, environment is neat and clean, but we did not enjoy the food. I got the chicken and brie sandwich. My toasted bread was drenched in grease, and it made the entire experience unbearable. We also got a vegetarian breakfast burrito because it was recommended to us, but it really did not taste good and left us with an upset stomach for the rest of the day. I love luckybolt and am so happy they are delivering during the lockdown (coronavirus menu is much more limited than normal, though.) I've always enjoyed the healthy options and how you can customize a lot of the dishes to your preference. Everything is healthy and made from scratch - lots of veggies in most of the dishes. They will do catering/prepared meals for holidays as well. Well worth the price since it's quality food and I don't have to make it OR clean up the mess in the kitchen LOL Sometimes things that seem expensive, like their bag of granola to go... but then I compare it to my granola from spouts and the lucky bolt granola is def many times more delicious LOL so then I'm happy! read more

I use Lucky Bolt probably twice a month. The entrees that I have ordered are exceptional. This week I had their pasta primavera dish (meat eaters had the choice of bolognese). The pasta was fresh, how often do you come upon fresh pasta, and the grilled veggies were incredible. It may well have been one of the best meals I've had in a long time....along with fresh bread and macaroons. They have a variety of offerings each week but only one main entree. My associate and I stopped in here hoping to grab something really quickly. She ordered a frittata to be heated up and I just wanted to nibble on something, so I just asked for a biscuit/scone (whatever it was) to be heated up slightly. The frittata was ready in roughly 5min. I waited an additional couple of minutes, until the cashier (she was very nice) told me they were working on it. Another 3-5min went by, and at this point other people who arrived after me were receiving their food. Finally, I just asked for a cold biscuit--these were pre-made and sitting next to the register on the counter--because we really had to go and were now running late to our meeting. Not only was the biscuit I ended up with not very enjoyable or tasty, I had to eat it cold. I waited about 10 min for a biscuit to be slightly warmed up that never happened because the kitchen was apparently backed up, yet they somehow managed to get other people's food to them on time. How can you claim to specialize in takeaway food and drop the ball on something that would have taken 20sec to microwave?? To top it off, we could clearly see two people who appeared to be working the kitchen, while another three were standing there, doing goodness knows what. I've worked in a busy cafe before on a university campus and had to deal with much busier situations than what we observed. The service can and should be better than this. read more

LUCKYBOLT Delivery- They are one of two lunch delivery services that our company uses. I have to say hands down the nicest folks and best customer service you will experience. I HATE HATE HATE mayo more than anything in the world. Sadly most places put it or a form of it on almost everything. Im constantly emailing these folks asking to make sure there is no sorts of mayo or aioli on the items im ordering. They have always made sure my order is correct. Today was the rare occasion were my food wasn't correct (not their fault, Rubicons in this case), now most companies would have said sorry and moved about their business. Not Luckybolt, they brought me over the correct sandwich and did it with a smile on their faces. Customer for life based on just the customer service aspect. Food- Luckybolt isn't just a delivery service but they have their own menu you can order from. With a newborn at home, we were gifted a gift card for this place. I had never heard of it before, but seemed like a cool concept for local meal delivery. A few weeks went by until we saw items on the delivery menu that looked like they'd suit our needs and likes. We went with the Local Hero Box and Build Your Own Vegan Bowls. The quality and freshness of all the ingredients was amazing! So glad to be eating healthy again after a month of eating out or delivered meals that weren't nearly as healthy, fresh, or delicious. I visited this place last Wednesday and wouldn't bother coming again. I wanted something quick in the morning before work. The lady at the front was nice and I ordered a sandwich at 8:56AM. She asked if I wanted it warmed which would only take a few minutes. Ten minutes later she apologized and said it was just placed in the oven to warm and I was late for work. The sandwich was also almost $9 and I ended up not getting it warmed because I was late for work. What a great service; our office has been using Lucky Bolt almost every day for the last 5 months or so, and we love it! You get a menu each day with a variety of lunch items (many of them healthy, vegetarian and/or gluten free) from one or two local restaurants, as well as several items cooked up by the Lucky Bolt kitchen (which are always fresh, healthy and delicious). Get your order in by 10:30 a.m., and it's delivered to your office around 12-12:30 pm. No service charge. For those days when you don't have time to make and pack a nutritious lunch, it's a great alternative. The food is really good quality, tasty, and healthy. And there are options from all over San Diego, so you're not limited to the same downtown spots. There's Greek, Italian, Mediterranean, Thai, Vietnamese, sandwich shops, salads, spring rolls, lots of healthy bowls with quinoa, rice, veggies, chicken, shrimp, you name it. So far, have really enjoyed Healthy Creations, Chedi Thai, PrepKitchen, Phuong Trang, Rubicon Deli, Curious Fork and of course, Kebab Shop (even though I could walk to that one). They also welcome suggestions. They currently provide nutritional info for their Small and Big Muscle Builder Bowls and vegan macaroons, but I emailed them, asking if it was possible to provide nutritional info for all their items (since I'm currently working with Diet Doc Kori Propst and tracking my macronutrients). I got a super fast, super friendly response right back from Emily Thomas at LuckyBolt saying that they appreciated my suggestion and that they're working on it, and hoping to be able to provide nutritional information soon. Meanwhile, they said that all their salads have approximately 3-4oz chicken (24-36g protein), around 15-20g carbs (depending on whether or not there are grains), and 5g fat if you do not include the dressing. Corporate Transparency. I hate dealing with start-up companies that make it difficult to find out basic information like their company address. I want to know their process and why they do the things they do. Why are they different and why should I use my time and money with them. LuckyBolt falls into this category. They told our company to try them once and see if we liked them or not. So we gave them a shot.. What is LuckyBolt? Each day you can select lunch items from three different restaurants and they'll deliver it to your office for free. Sounds great, but there are oddities that just rub me the wrong way. Our company had orders from multiple restaurants but what was strange was the containers were mostly all the same. Did they ship these standard containers to all of these restaurants before hand? Perhaps they buy the food in bulk then re package it at their main location? No explanation on their website..I want the official restaurant packaging that way I know everything is on the up and up. On the day I ordered, I selected a salad from a vendor called "LuckyBolt". I don't know what this means. Did the restaurant not want to be identified so they simply called it "LuckyBolt"? Perhaps they're making their own "LuckyBolt" branded food in their LuckyBolt office kitchen? Again with the mystery. What isn't a mystery is that the food that we received from "LuckyBolt" was terrible. My Asian Crunch Salad was supposed to contain shredded Napa cabbage, cilantro and mung beans, shredded carrots, roasted bell peppers, scallions, snow peas, jicama, and fresh pea tendrils from Her Family Farms, topped with toasted peanuts and thin slivers of thai chilies with a side of our Southeast Asian dressing. Our salads didn't contain many of these ingredients like peanuts, chilies, or cilantro. When it arrived it was a soggy room temperature mess. To our surprise they put the plastic dressing container at the bottom of the salad!! What is this, Cracker Jacks? Also, the complete lack of any culinary skills prepping the salad was a joke. Totally irregular chopping and slicing techniques. I'm wondering if they got the IT staff to make this "LuckyBolt" salad. I like this concept, the food from "Lucky Bolt" was terrible. I'm so glad luckybolt exists!! It's super convenient when I don't have time to go out for lunch! You place your order and pay for it the morning of on their website. Then you go pick it up on Market and Beale from 11-1pm. The food is still warm when you get it! They usually have food from two different restaurants for your pickings. I've been using this service for about a year now, and I don't have a single complaint! Oh and btw, they have this rewards system. I believe your lunch is on them after every 10 orders. Lately, it looks like they added a little something for people that don't have time to really make dinner. The pricing is usually about $10-$15 and serves 1-2 people. They've also had almost all the daily specials and loved each one. I always eat from the deli counter. So many yummy options... egg Frittata, chicken salad and egg salad are all delicious.
