Melange had a nice cozy spot in my bookmarks until last night, when we came to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter (gf's new job, if you're so curious). Things didn't start off too smoothly. 6:30pm on a Saturday, the restaurant was slow, and so was the host and staff. Perhaps the pandemic has thrown a wrench in their plans, who knows. The host was off somewhere helping another table so a server came to greet us. He couldn't find any more menus so we were sat with just one. No biggie. Once seated, it took a bit for our server to come help us. Though I promise you, that was the end of our worries. Our server was amazing and super patient in introducing us to the restaurant and their menu. Let's get into the MEAT (~oOoh foreshadowing~) of the review, shall we? For starters, we ordered the beet "sunomono" which was just beets (LOL), but bravo for the attempt at sticking with their fusion theme. Jokes aside, it was fresh, tasty, and a great start to the meal. For the mains, we ordered the ribeye steak (medium rare, duh) and saikyo chilean sea bass, with a side of potato gratin and crispy tofu. Unfortunately, the steak came out cooked medium to medium well. Not one to waste food, we accepted it and we still enjoyed it. The STAR OF THE NIGHT was the Saikyo Chilean Sea Bass. OMG the fish was fresh and so tender. Coupled with the sauce, 100/10, chef's kiss. Highly highly recommended. The potato gratin was alright, nothing to write about. The crispy tofu was good, reminiscent of your HK cafe's fried tofu w/ chopped peppers, etc. Back to our server. She was amazing and her service was definitely one of the highlights of the night. I give it 4 star hoping they will improve. The setting is the best part. It is inside the brand la meridian hotel. My friend stayed here for couple weeks while they were having a renovation in there house. We decided to try this Asian fusion restaurant. All the dishes have decent plating. Taste is under par. It's more like a 3.5. Some of the stuff were definitely very enjoyable and some of the stuff just fell short. I would say for the most part, the service is pretty slow which I expect them to improve later on. I'm not complaining about it cause they know it themselves and they gave us desserts on the table. So at least they know some of their problems but I'll mention it anyway. The appetizers came and it took another 40+ mins for the entrees to come. We had dinner for a bit more than 3+ hours(which you're validated for 3 hours lol). We got the ribs, octopus, and crispy quail. The ribs being the worst out of everything we had and I thought the dinner was gonna be a disaster cause that was my first bite. Highly don't recommend the ribs. The octopus were ok, I thought it was a little sweet but the taste wise it was ok. I really like the crispy quail. I never had a crispy quail before and I just thought this appetizer really worked out(would get it again). The entrees(they ran out of scallop + uni which was a big shame) we got were crispy hirame with truffle sauce, seabass, duck to replace the scallop, filet mignon, new york, short skirt, and bouillabaisse . I would honestly say that all the meat(more so beef) fell short. The one with the peppercorn sauce was the worst by far cause it just overwhelms the meat entirely. The other two were standard, while one comes with creamy risotto and the other one came with wasabi mash potato. Nothing special but none of the 3, I would get it again. So my conclusion was that the seafood is better here. Although the bouillabaisse was really rich in flavor, is it really a bouillabaisse if it's not an actual soup? I guess it's more of a stew...but like I definitely it needed more soup to the ingredients ratio. Still pretty good though. I would say that although we didnt plan to order the duck, I like the duck quite a bit. It's a fusion of the hk style duck with almost like a french twist to it. While the duck is a bit crispy, it has a nice cherry sauce that goes well with it. I actually quite like it. The seabass was delicious. I believe the suave it and that made this seabass not as oily as how it should be. I highly recommend it. As for my hirame which was the winner for me, I love the crispiness to it. Not only was it fried to perfection but the truffle sauce was just excellent. I love it a lot. Didn't care for the cilantro soy sauce...it's really just soy sauce lol. I love the cilantro on the side(cause im a cilantro sucker). The desserts were ok. I like the pecan? tart a lot. there were a few that we wanted to get more but they ran out... the chocolate cake was pretty standard...and I don't exactly care for matcha but the matcha cheesecake is ok. If you're a matcha fan, maybe you'll enjoy it a lot more than me. I thought it was ok. I would consider coming back. Hope to see their service speed up as they get more experience. read more

My godsis and I have a tradition of treating ourselves to our own birthday dinners and this year, we decided on Melange. It was interesting to find out that Chef Makoto Tanaka decided to open an upscale restaurant in a newly built boutique hotel in a city like Arcadia but hey, it worked out for us. Better than us trying to navigate our way through LA traffic on a Saturday night. Made our reservations for 2 on OpenTable as soon as that one Eater LA article came out! Lemme start by giving a HUGE s/o to our server, Erik, for being amazing and charismatic throughout the entire night. He was constantly checking in to see if we are enjoying ourselves and asked for our opinions on any changes that need to be made in regards to each of the dishes we ordered. I'm glad that because it's a new establishment, everyone's trying to gather input from their patrons to ensure that it's here to stay. Our drinks were fantastic. My sis had the Break Maiden (vodka) and I had the Theodora (gin). Erik also recommended this mango popsicle + white wine concoction that was absolutely delicious and refreshing - really reminded us of a yummy bellini. Foodwise this was what we ordered - yellowtail crudo (4/5 can't really go wrong with this but no wow factor), crispy quail (5/5 for tenderness and crispiness), Saikyo Chilean sea bass (4/5 flaky, seasoned well, but still kinda just reminded me of the whole steamed fish at Chinese restaurants), braised short ribs (5/5 meat was flavorful and cooked to perfection, ORZO WAS TO DIE FOR), lamb chops (5/5 not gamey at all, addicting basil aioli sauce) and crispy brussel sprouts (3/5 good but we've had better, cute presentation with a mini Le Creuset pot). Who would have ever thought I'd find a restaurant like Melange in Arcadia? Needless to say, it was truly a gem and everything about it was spectacular. The restaurant is located in the brand new hotel and only offers valet parking, but make sure to validate so your first 2 hours is $10. Between my godsis and I, we probably ordered half the menu... but who can say no to so many enticing choices? The food gorgeous, but it tasted even better than it looked! The drinks were also delicious and I definitely recommend their drinks under house expression. All the drinks we tried during the night were great! The two of us shared the yellowtail crudo, fried quail, sea bass, braised short ribs, lamb chops, with a side of brussels. The hits of the night were definitely the braised short ribs and the lamp chops. The orzo that came with the short ribs were cheesy and cooked to absolute perfection. A bite of the daikon with the orzo and short rib was PERFECTION! The lamb chops were tender and not gamey at all, but the basil aioli tied everything together. Everything from the location, drinks, food, and service was just 5/5 for me. Not a destination for foodies. It's about average for a hotel restaurant - on par with The Hilton in San Gabriel. If you're staying there it's possible, but it's not a destination. We had the crustini, lamb chops, ribeye, and mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts on the side. Crustini: ok, but not worth $4 a piece for toast and a piece of cheese with a piece of fruit on top with a few greens. Meh at best. Lamb chops: looked good, but no flavor. Ribeye: was drowning in sauce and the meat, while tender, was Choice at best. Mash: was decent. Brussel sprouts: Salty! Ambience was ok for upper mid-level hotel - on par with Hilton. Service was friendly, but definitely not fine dining or anything. Nothing bad - on par. The food was better at Craft (at the mall) down the street, and at a lower price point. Holy. Cow. Single handedly one of the worst dining experiences ever. First sign that this would be a terrible lunch was when we stood the hostess table for about 5 minutes without anyone coming. But once she did arrive, we were given a great booth table with coloring for the kids. We got our waters quickly and the server took our orders. The server said this is a nice pre-Mother's Day brunch! I ordered the pancakes, hubs ordered the salmon plate, and of course the kiddo got the Japanese bento breakfast. We also ordered 2 coffees. The coffee arrived almost immediately. Then we waited. & waited. & waited. I noticed the people who were seated before us also waited a while. But hope was on the horizon when I saw the 2 parties before us get their food. But ours still didn't come. My son kept saying he was hungry, and my 3 year old was growing impatient and I didn't blame her. My husband kept trying to get the attention of an employee, but once he held his hand in the air, they all seemed to turn the other way. It made us wonder if they were purposely not making eye contact with us. After waiting a minimum of 45 minutes, we saw the party who arrived AFTER us get served their food. Luckily, this party was near us so my husband was finally able to tell another server that we arrived before them and still missing our food. The server immediately responded "they're just waiting on the Japanese bento box." What's in the bento? Salmon, rice, miso soup, pickles. Did the kitchen forget to thaw the salmon? I found it astonishing that during our wait, we were completely uninformed about what was going on. If there was an issue with the bento, let us know. Tell us it's going to take longer and/or ask us if we'd like to order another item on the menu. Apologize for the wait and maybe offer if we'd like some more coffee while we wait? Absolutely horrible customer service. When the food did arrive, our server apologized for the wait. It seemed out of left field since during the course of our wait, he never came over to acknowledge that it was taking a long time. We finished our food, which by the way was good. Jonah loved the bento box and finished everything except the rice. I didn't see the check, but I believe the server apologized to my husband for the wait and gave 20% off and did not charge us for the coffees. Again, it was a gesture that surprised us because the server seemingly ignored us the whole time and then gave us a discount to make up for it?? Odd. I assume that there were some big issues in the kitchen. Understaffed with maybe frozen fish? I'll never know. But transparency goes a long way in customer service. Review for High Tea: Service was great, nothing to complain about. That's what contributed to 2 stars. The food however was truly subpar. It was pretty astonishing how bad it was. Several pieces of food were laid out directly on a wooden tray without anything layered under - not very hygienic. The tray is obviously a porous material so it's not sterile. Not a single piece of food was made fresh on order and everything was overcooked, hard, either bland or salty and cold to taste. The desserts seem store bought and not made in house either. I'm shocked they offer this, and at $68 per person before 21% service charge. We also waited 25 min before the food was brought out. Makes no sense considering nothing was cooked, it was obviously just assembled on the spot. Absolutely terrible and never coming back. read more

This review is for their Afternoon Tea aka High Tea experience. NOT RECOMMENDED! Even before coming here MayLene D. had issues with our reservations getting cancelled when they called to confirm. Then she had to investigate with the restaurant where they took hours to respond to say it was a mistake on their end. We should have taken it as a sign to avoid this place. Located inside of Le Meridien hotel, valet parking is required. They validate for 3 hours, but it was an inconvenience to me since I had to quickly out of my car, change into heels and didn't have time to put finishing touches to my make up in the comfort of my car. And obviously had to have cash to tip. The restaurant is to the right of the entrance of the hotel. It was really strange that we were seated outside of the restaurant area, out in the hotel common area closer to the bar. We were basically unseen and neglected the whole time. There was only one waitress to this section and she was extremely slow and inefficient. We waited a ridiculously long time after being seated before she even came over to this other table who sat down after us. Luckily they had the decency to point out that we came first. Her explanations about the menu was slow and inefficient to... Like okay, please GET TO THE POINT. Their High Tea experience is $80 per person PLUS 18% SERVICE CHARGE. Considering this is allegedly a high tea experience, they had a scarce selection of teas and even less loose leaf options to pick from. There was nothing I was in love with but i just picked one for the sake of the experience. MayLene D. went with the Cerise de Chine, a sencha tea infused with cherry and rose petals and I went with an Oolong Caramel Buerre loose leaf tea. MayLene D. says her tea was like any basic green tea. My tea was not that memorable either. Also the pots were basic, not cute at all like a true afternoon tea experience. Just for a time reference on how slow they were... Reservations were at 12:15pm, and we barely got tea at 1:00pm. When the food eventually came out, the savory bites came first. Ummm so many questions. What is that nasty FISH smell?? And is this for the afternoon tea?? strange... The nasty fish smell was a sea bass with plus dashi sauce. I regret eating it cause it did not taste fresh and I felt sick after eating it. Spring vegetable crispy roll was like a cheap wanna be eggroll with cheap filling. The chicken breast with goat cheese and truffles was more like subpar yoshinoya teriyaki chicken. The least bad was this wagyu beef with spinach and ricotta cheese tart but that did not taste like wagyu. If I didn't skip dinner the night prior, I probably wouldn't even eaten this food. Hard pass on this entire savory platter. Then came the sweets with the scones on the bottom tier and the sweets on the rest of the three tiers. Everything was pretty awful. For the scones there were currant butter and green tea scones. It came with strawberry jam, apricot jam, clotted cream, honey and lemon curd which were all required in excess since the scones were dreadfully dry. Dryer than my laundry after I run it for two cycles in the dryer. So dry I had to drink my tea to moisten my palette and flag down the negligent waitress for a hot water refill for our ugly tea ketels. There was nothing pleasant on three whole tiers of this junk. The worst of all was the top layer. The lavender milk tea macaron was tasteless and the green tea azuki alfajores cookies was so bad I had to run to the bar to get a napkin to spit it up. It was like chalk in texture with nasty aftertaste. The table next to us also complained to the waitress about the same item, so they definitely suffered the same pain we suffered. I don't know which was the most insulting part of the experience... That it was nearly double the cost of superior Afternoon Tea experiences... That other places actually taste good and pay attention to their patrons... That there were a million places we would have been happier visiting for a lower cost. Everything about the experience was frustrating and an absolute waste of time, calories and money. I have been trying to go to all the high tea places in LA. When I see this place opened, I was at first concerned due to skeptical reviews. However I decided to try it nevertheless because my inner high tea spirit is telling me to do it. It is located in the newly built Marriott hotel. Initially I wanted to go for the $55 high tea option but they mentioned that they only have the $80 spring tea special which is way better so we had no choice but to go with that option. It was the beginning of our mistake. Every savory items tasted like a high end dim sum with a bite. Scone was cold, pastry tasted stale. They even used those Chinese restaurant tea kettle to serve my tea? Honestly I would give 1 star for the food but I would go up 1 star since the dining environment was okay. Probably the worst high tea I have had in my life and I would not recommend to anyone who enjoys high tea as much as I do. read more

They were very generous & gave us 2 free desserts: macadamia tart with chocolate ice cream & 3 scoops of gelato. Our favorite was the passion fruit gelato. Every dish we ordered was tasty: yellowtail crudo, grilled prawns, broccolini carrot mushroom & our absolute favorite was the crab salad & the Saikyo Chilean Sea Bass. We also enjoyed our non-alcoholic drinks: pomegranate drink & lavender lemonade. It's a great place to celebrate a special occasion. And the food is fine, nothing extraordinary or "asian fusion" except the green tea macaroon but tastes what it should taste. No cake or sandwich dry. Everything tastes good. Pretty traditional stuff. But no cucumber sandwich. And NO CLOTTED CREAM! Service is kinda lacking but one might like that if you want to catch up with friends and not be interrupted by service. I actually would walk to the server to get more hot water lol. We decided to have our late white elephant gathering here, we thought it was a cute venue. We came on a Sunday, it is located inside the Marriott hotel, valet only but it can be validated. The interior design was very mid end, velvet plush seats. I love the color of the wall, and lighting. All the servings were amazing, we took beautiful group photos. All the entrees had a beautiful present. Lobster- I can taste a bit of curry, it was flavorful and nicely paired with spinach. Fried Tofu- this was lightly seasoned with ponzu or soy sauce, works well with the rest of the items Garlic Noodles with Crispy Onions- it like low mein . Not too garlicky, great tummy filler as the other entrees were small portions. Sizzling Whole East Coast Hirame- our server recommended this, I liked this better than the sea bass, that black bean truffle sauce was amazing. Highly recommend. 28 Saikyo Chilean Sea Bass- sea bass tasted fresh and melted like truffle in your mouth. Yum. Toro Tartare- it was very good, the toro was meaty. Braised Octopus- this is a small portion, or worth the taste. 5 oz A5+Kobe Wagyu New York- wow the Wagyu melted in my mouth. Uni Sashimi- I live uni, can't go wrong for uni. The interior is an awkward mix of styles that doesn't come together. Think bad 1980s wall coverings and columns paired with 1960s space-age light fixtures and chairs. The lighting is bright and overly harsh. Our waitress was very friendly, and overall service was attentive, though a bit slow. We were told there was an event stretching the staff thin that evening. We started with margaritas, which were overly sweet and dominated by the artificial taste of mix. For an appetizer, the Brussels sprouts were coated in a thick, overly processed sauce that resembled something from a frozen dinner. My main course, the salmon, was passable but uninspired. My extended family and I visited this restaurant in the new hotel about a month ago. It was on a Sunday night. The server, Erik, was a sweetheart. The hostess was also very kind. The reason this got one star is the kitchen cannot manage any large parties and get the good out in a reasonable manner. The food was pretty, but it wasn't worth the price because the flavor was lacking. We had to tables next to each other, and no one at either table got their dishes at the same time. My children ordered chicken tenders and it came out 1.5 hours later! Unacceptable. The poor server apologized on behalf of the kitchen, but it wasn't Erik's fault! The cocktails were fun but the food itself was not amazing, honestly it lacked salt. I also waited 1 and 1/2 hours for my risotto to come out- very last. It was good but it needed salt and my kids had to go to bed so we just rushed and took the chicken tenders to go and went home, while the other family member stayed to finish their late meals. Also, when the other servers tried to help deliver the dishes, at least two or three times, they came with the wrong dishes to our table or did not know who ordered what. read more

I so badly didn't want to believe some of the previous reviews that said this restaurant isn't prepared to open, but alas, I agree. Melange is located inside the new Marriott hotel between all the Huntington Drives (lol). They have valet only parking, which was annoying. We made a reservation for 7 but when we arrived, the table wasn't set yet. After they set it, we were still missing some utensils. This set the tone for the entire evening as our table was often forgotten. We never even got a refill for water. We started off by ordering doubles of the yellowtail crudo, crispy oysters and braised octopus. The yellowtail crudo was pretty good but also not particularly special. The oysters were good, but each order comes only with 3. Our waiter graciously gave us 1 more so we could each have one (probably the best thing he did all night for us). The octopus was so good, but it was really small and the salad that came with it was forgettable. Additionally the serving tongs they gave us were difficult to use. For the main course, we ordered doubles of the Chilean sea bass, New York steak, scallops with uni, and garlic noodles. The chilean seabass was delicious, but they gave us a slotted spoon as a serving utensil, which made it difficult to get more sauce for the fish. The steak was nice, but again, nothing special. The potatoes gratin was fantastic though! The scallops with uni were okay and left more to be desired. Unfortunately, the most memorable dish of the night was the garlic noodles, simply because I never thought anyone could make garlic noodles taste bad. It was basically overcooked cheap ramen noodles with some garlic. Extremely disappointing. Given how expensive dinner was, we'd hoped we'd be content at this point and ready for dessert, but we weren't. I've been to restaurants with smaller dishes / high prices before, but it just wasn't satisfying. We ended up ordering a roasted duck and a seafood risotto just to fill us out. The duck was pretty good and something I could recommend from here. The seafood risotto didn't quite remind me of a risotto. Dessert on average was much better than the dinner. I had the macadamia tart with ube ice cream. If you like macadamia nuts, you can't go wrong with this dessert. I also tried the yuzu tart, the matcha basque cheesecake, and the flourless chocolate cake. If you particularly like those types of flavors, you will not be disappointed with the dessert you choose. I should say, if you are an ice cream snob, note that the ice cream is from Fosselman's. Don't get me wrong, that's great, but the dessert does advertise it as gelato. I don't really care what it is but I didn't appreciate that they made it sound fancier than it actually was so they could overprice it. Overall, the high prices do not match the small portions, lack luster service, and mediocre food. Sure, there were some delicious bites (and the only thing saving this from a 2 star review), but Melange has a long way to go before it can be the restaurant that they probably hope to be. read more

Next another man tries to help to no avail with find our reservation which was made on open table, next finally a manger came up and started chatting with the girl and later walked away, finally she decided to proceeded to assist us. They can definitely use training here. Food: I was expecting better given the price but overall everything was pretty good. Food* The three-tier afternoon tea set, comes with a choice of tea, scones, a few savory small bites on the bottom including shitake, salmon, shrimp, lobster fillings and two tiers of pastries including a cupcake, mousse, mochi, nama chocolate, biscuit and macaron. Personally I think that the savory sandwiches were so-so, especially when the texture of the bread is very dry and feels that was left out for a long time, but the lobster filling one was pretty good. I enjoyed the pastries way more than the sandwiches, they were not very sweet and the varieties were great. I enjoyed them, especially the nama matcha chocolate and the mochi (i think it is taro, cream and salted egg? filling) a lot! Price* $55 each plus service charge. Service* Everyone was very smiley and would come check on you at the right time, which I think was good. My wife and I came here on a Friday night since we were in the area... we called for a last minute reservation and from start to finish everyone had a great attitude and the scene was very cool, casual yet elegant... highly recommend to try! Valet is free (I think with minimum purchase of $100). I see some negative reviews on here and can only relate that the prices are pretty high for the portion size, and there's not much selection for larger entrees. My experience Friday night was really fast service with food that tastes fresh and delicious. My wife said she was SHOOK on how quick the foods came out :p The hotel looks really nice as well, and the bathrooms are clean (since covid I figured I'd attest to their cleanliness). All the appetizers were delicious and unique! However we only liked the seafood risotto entree a little bit, in our opinion the rice could be more tender. We basically ordered a bunch of dishes and shared everything. Some favorites were the crispy tofu and all the desserts! We decided to come here for my dad's birthday and were enticed by the DineLA menu, which consisted of a 7 course meal for $55. It said a minimum of 2 guests were required, but they didn't specify that it had to be in pairs as the dishes are 2 servings per plate. Only 3 guests in our party wanted the DineLA, but we ended up going with 4. That's $220 already! The dining experience takes FOREVER. Our reservation was at 6:30pm on a Sunday and we didn't finish our meal until 9:30pm. Each course came out super slowly and the first dish (Caprese salad) took 45 minutes to come out. The short rib skewers were my favorite dish, along with the brussel sprouts. The entire hotel parking lot is only for valet parking. It's free with validation, but we still opted to park across the street to avoid having to tip the driver. read more

BRUNCH!!! Went there with the family! Had a little bit of something for everyone. Started with shrimp cocktail and the Salmon flatbread. Delicious! The chicken karage and waffles were a hit with the kids! Wife and grandma ordered the Traditional Japanese Bento box (salmon was cooked just right, miso soup hit the spot) and the Sandwich Trio is a 1000% reorder the next time around (lobster, tempura, and poke on brioche/mini sandwiches). Came here on Valentines Day with reservations at 7, was seated at 7:45 and received a salad (after complaining) at 8:40. I never leave reviews but after we finally were eating hours after our reservation the steak was cold, and the sides were cold and bland. We honestly didn't even finish we had to hunt someone down to get our check so we could finally leave. This was like a 300 dollar check, which is just obscene for the service and food we received. The kicker was that we were supposed to get a rose with our meal and I just realized I didn't even get my rose :( I'm not even full, I'm so sad. read more

We wanted to try something different, so why not stop at a newly built hotel and try their restaurant, right?!?!? Well, we did! What a lovely place! I love the build out, modern with rustic look/feel. Nice lovely restaurant. We had a very attentive server who offered specials and recommendations. Food was creative, wasn't typical hotel dining. Fusion style, East meets west/euro flare to it, but not overly done. The appetizers / were all amazing. The main course did not disappoint. We got the duck which was cooked perfectly good flavor nice crunchy skin and cooked two ways. My daughter got the steak cooked perfectly to order (medium). The sea bass was great also. I was really impressed with the scallop and uni, two of my favorites! Will definitely stop by there again when we are in the area. Every dish was cooked to perfection. The yuba roll and the veal sweet bread were very unique and left us wanting more. Chilean sea bass was perfect temperature and fresh. The octopus was delicious. Nice place to take out-of-town guests for a pleasant location and classy surroundings. Most of the people dining for breakfast seemed to be hotel guests including several families. I had to reject the table offered to me and my cousin as there were several others in more prominent places with better lighting. The avocado toast was satisfying with a generous serving of the creamy green fruit on nutty nutritious bread, but the coffee was a tad cold. I had to ask for a new pot. Service can be sluggish. Overall the location and surroundings make it a fine unexpected choice. I'd go again. I'd like to try the high tea next door, too. read more
