It their food portions are pretty massive so if you are a party of three you only need to get two or three plates. If you are looking for a traditional Mexican food this is not your place. They definitely put a more modern spin on their Mexican food it. I had a taco that had three tortillas on it that was super unnecessary. I really like they're not your typical Carnitas. I think that was probably my favorite dish out of all of them. I tried to see if you think we need that was OK but not worth $21. I have been to Matador countless number of times but very disappointed with what happened today. I literally go there at least 2 times a month if not more, but not sure ill go after today. Wednesday is supposed to be heroes and educators night after 2pm. 50% discount. See attached image. My boyfriend is a police officer. Just went there to get food to go and they denied him the 50% discount because according to them it doesn't apply to to go orders. Yet, 2 weeks ago we had a friend, who is a police officer go and get take out and he got 50% discount. To add to that, on the ad for it (in the pic) or their website no where does it specify that it's only for dine in. I think its ridiculous that he didn't get the promised 50% discount. I've been coming to Matador for about 6 years now at least twice a month, but thats about to stop. Don't advertise something if you won't honor it every single time! And to add to that. What a great place to have a birthday party. I just had my wife's 50th birthday here at the restaurant and I can't speak highly enough of the food and service. Leanna, the event manager made everything so simple, and for a reservation of 30 people, staff easily took care of everything that we needed. Oooh I came here for dinner and ended up at a club! I really had no idea that this place gets poppin w/ a DJ at a certain time!! It was cool though, lots of people coming through ordering them mysterious blue drinks & dancing the night away. For dinner, I ordered a chicken plate that had these wonderful plaintains...! It was good but a little pricey for the portion. All in all, I enjoyed the meal. Drinks were a little on the expensive side too. But this visit I really didn't care because it was a special occasion! We were sat in the outdoor patio which was cozy because the seats were comfortable and there was a heater blasting from above. You could also smoke on this patio apparently too! So like I mentioned, at one point the servers were off for the night and then it was just all bar from that point on. The DJ was playing all the jams and people were filing in to dance inside. People mingled outside too by the bar. And those blue drinks are actually a strange mix of all these liquors that will get you toasted pretty quickly !! Do not go here if you support racist businesses. I came here with my 3 friends. We waited in line for 20 minutes just for security to say we cannot come in due to my friend (who is black) having a small face tattoo. The security stated that face tattoos are not allowed. I've been here during the day and food&service were great . Yesterday night me and a friend decided to go get some late night drinks& food and it was the complete opposite. We sat at a very wobbly table to the point we were able to spin it ourselves, so my drink ended up spilling on me. We ask a server if we can move to the table across since it was empty for 20 min and we wanted to eat and drink on a better table she questions who our original server is so we show her then we see her approach our server and let her know we requested to switch tables and our server turned and looked and just ignored us . 10 min pass by I decided to ask 2 gentlemen that seemed to be bussing the tables but were just standing if we may move and one of them goes " I don't know ask them don't ask me " and he walks away . 10 min again pass by and my friend gets up and she approaches our server who was avoiding us if we can move and she states " don't talk to me talk to my manager " . I didn't know I had to do our servers job. It's pretty disrespectful the way we were treated when they could have just provided a simple no instead of giving us the run around , avoiding us, and making us have to go ask around for help. Went here for brunch. Didn't have a reservation, but it didn't matter because we got there early and the place was pretty empty. Their complimentary chips and salsa left a lot to be desired. We ordered a breakfast burrito, chicken quesadilla, and an omelette. The omelette was by far the best option with the burrito being the worst. There was nothing that I could pinpoint as being wrong with it other than the fact that it felt like it was lacking flavor--it was extremely blah. By far, the best thing we ordered were the bloody marys which were fantastic, and I normally don't even like bloody marys. It looks really cool on the inside and we were excited to try this place out. We had to ask the waiter for (2) waters, (3) different times. That should be the first thing he brings us right? Then, he forgot the menus, and we asked him twice for those. (He seemed to be very distracted, and it wasn't all that busy, just yet). I got a margarita, $4 on Taco Tuesday... It just tasted like the Margarita mix, hardly any alcohol. The cantina rolls were amazing, the best part of our experience there. I must add the chips and salsa (complimentary) are really good. My friends and I went here for one of my friend's birthday and I was pleasantly surprised with their service. They allowed my friend to put together a 4 course (appetizer, salad, main entree, dessert) for $20 per person ($25 with tip). We had our own area reserved and we were all able to systematically order (very awesome considering were in this super huge group). I got the steak and it was AMAZING :) the portions are so HUGE. i would definitely come back for the food, or even consider doing my birthday at this place one day. My only complaints are about parking and slightly overpriced alchy. And also when we were finishing up. They started cleaning up before we were all ready to go. Although pretty on the inside, this restaurant's service is a complete disaster. We went here for NYE after discovering several places were closed. We wanted to get some food and drinks before heading off to fireworks. When I first walked in, I was asked if I had a reservation. I called before I arrived and they said they were open for dinner and no reservation was necessary. Opentable.com would not allow me to make reservations either. The manager told me that reservations were required, but he would get us in at a high top, but we "needed to be out by 9PM." That is a good way to make someone feel unwelcome. Then we ordered several drinks and our drinks were messed up three times. First, the S.O. ordered a blood orange mojito and got a blood orange margarita. Then, my friend Dave G. ordered a blood orange mojito and got a regular mojito. Last, my friend Luis ordered a pineapple juice and got a glass of juice with the label floating in the drink. The food was OK - and that's why I'm giving this review 2 stars. I ordered the braised short rib tacos, which were super dry. The chips and salsa were good too, and I quickly filled up on them because it took us a hour to receive our food (from order to delivery.) Mind you, the place wasn't super packed when we ordered. The service was slow and I noticed locals were getting better service while we waited.. and waited.. and then waited some more. Although the food is decent, the service here is just simply below par. Not really sure how many other non-vegan options there are on the rice, beans, and sauce but it was nice to have my choices narrowed down for me. She even offered to make sure the tortillas for the taco and enchilada doesn't contain lard. The meateater BF had the Chorizo Ravioli which he loved! He wishes the portion was larger since it only comes with five pieces but he understands how the big bowl of salad that it comes with helps complete the meal. Overall, I love this place! First time in Fullerton, CA and I love this place! Our server, Lizzy, was both professional, friendly and went above and beyond our expectations. We arrived a bit early and they were playing old school rok en español which set such a chill mood. As the nite progressed, and the crowd did too, the music is pumped up to more dance, twerking music which made you want to get up and "perrear sola" jajaja. Cool vibe here, especially in the front of the restaurant at the large wood bar tables by the open windows that look out onto Harbor Blvd. I can take or leave tortilla chips unless served with queso (then I'm all over it), but these chips were really good and finally a salsa with some heat! Let's just say we were quite the happy campers. Looking for upscale Latin food in downtown Fullerton? Matador is your spot. A house margarita is often a mistake...but here it's a fine choice -- full of flavor and decent tequila, on the rocks. Warm chips and spicy homemade salsa get things going. And the queso fundido on the appetizers menu is a cast-iron bowl of goodness (and cheese and chorizo and onions). Other appetizers worth trying include the bahn mi tostada (made with their carnitas pork topped with spicy sauce, pickled veges, and a sunny side up quail egg on a fried tortilla) and quesadillas. If you're going for a full meal, the steak a la plancha is tender and delicious, served with chimichurri sauce, veges and plantains.
