Stopped in here for a quick bite on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It's right across from the park and it had a nice vibe with lots of foot traffic. They have a nice simple menu with a couple salads, a soup, burger, hummus bowl and sandwich (BLT). I chose the Summer BLT. It was incredibly tasty. Wonderful baguette, nice pieces of bacon, large portion. I opted for the salad instead of fries. All the ingredients taste very farm-to-table! Service was quick and extremely friendly. Saturday night, my gf wanted to try this place out. We ordered ahead online. After 30 mins I would imagine our order would have been ready. Nope. First. Place was really noisy and busy. I understand it was saturday and the dinner hour. I had stood there for 5 mins and no one asked me if I was there to pick up an order. I finally talked to the person who was running the front. I was pointed to another area for pick up orders. Ok. At the other area. I asked about my order. I was told it was still working and would be ready in 10 mins. Really??? Magpie is such a fun sacramentan restaurant! We went on a weekday and got their drink of the day (watermelon agua Fresca) and a whole spread of delicious foods! Going with a larger group would be ideal to try more. The dishes were so unique and I recommend getting several options. We ordered the ceviche, the whole chicken, the roasted veggies, and the green salad with cucumber dill, feta, heirloom tomatoes, and croutons! The chicken was the star of the show. It was unbelievably moist and the skin was so crispy, melts completely in your mouth. The Watermelon agua Fresca was okay... I wouldn't order it again. I've been waiting a long time to eat here, and finally did. My son and I arrived around 11 and only a few customers. The menu was for lunch, and i didn't know brunch was on the weekends. Couldn't decide, so I went with the Magpie salad, and my son got the chicken banh Minh and the squash fries. Crispy but way too oily. I've tried a lot of different items off their menu over the years. My personal favorite is their hummus bowl but I also love the BLT and the cheeseboard. Everything I've eaten here has been an experience, nearly all of them good! That's more than I can say for most restaurants I've been to more than twice. I've stopped dining inside because the whole atmosphere is a bit ...pretentious. Like, they've moved past trendy and into judgy. Luckily they have a great system for online ordering and picking up inside or at the curb. I've received fantastic service at the curb that was, thankfully, untrendy, non-pretentious, and judgy-free. I'll stick with that, thank you very much. Taking off half a star because some off their prices feel a tiny bit steep and another half for trying too hard to be cool. I was walking down 16th street in our beloved city and heard a chirp calling my me in. Magpie! I was greeted by a very friendly staff member who welcomed me in with a smile. I sat on the patio and enjoyed watching people enjoy their day. My server was named Holly, she was a sweetheart! Holly was very informative about the menu and very enthusiastic about the wonderful faire that was served at Magpie. Since I had to go back to the office that day I decided to have one of the agua fresca's they were offering, it was a watermelon mint agua Fresca. Absolutely perfect drink for this perfect lunch. I chose the steamed clams for my meal. It was packed with flavor! It was served with wonderful bread that they called croutons. So scrumptious! I was getting full but another server named Carmen talked me into the ice cream sandwich....so glad they did! I will be back for dinner and drinks! I was in Sacramento for an event and met my brother for lunch at Magpie. It was a modest menu with absolutely delicious dishes. He ate ceviche (and he didn't talk because he was devouring every bite), I ate the BLT (the thickest cut of bacon, big beefy tomato, and slightly bitter greens on, what was it, ciabatta?), and then we shared the side vegetable (a generous side portion of beets, green beans, peppers, carrots) and carrot cake cookies with cream cheese filling. The drinks were fun too - I had the blueberry soda and my brother had the watermelon agua fresca. I went back to the Bay Area and told my husband that I think I had Looking forward to returning because I probably had the best, hands down, BLT that I have ever eaten. This place was a step above and took pride in their kitchen. Came here on St. Patrick's Day and started off with two yummy Irish Coffee's. Nice since it was a bit chilly outside. The food was good. We ordered the Mac and Cheese with Brussel Sprouts and Bacon for myself and Soup and Grilled Cheese for my boyfriend. The Mac had a really nice blend of cheeses. I love how fresh the Brussels were. Well garnished with crispy brussel leaves. I could have done without the bacon though. Not the biggest fan of bacon on my food unless it's for breakfast. My boyfriend thought the combination of veggies in the soup was fresh, not your typical tomato bisque. It was more of a minestrone mixture. Although, I personally would have preferred tomato. The bread was light and crispy, and whatever cheese they used was amazing. Boyfriend finished of with the Port of Rye. It was yummy. Overall, I'm not dying to come back here though. Although they are longer at 14th and R, it's good to know their farm-to-fork approach travels well and this new, larger capacity location will be on my regular breakfast rotation for years to come. Comparison: Magpie is better than Iron Horse Tavern (15th Street). Lighter meals that won't overwhelm the tastebuds. Specifically, in the battle of the Best French Toast, here's my current rankings: 1. Tower Cafe (1518 Broadway, Sacramento) 2. Cafe Italia (Davis -- closing at the end of August 2017 so hurry!) 3. Magpie 4. Cafe Bernardo (Davis location tastes better than the other locations) 5. Iron Horse Tavern 1005. IHop Tips For First-Timers: 1. Metered street parking. If you find a spot while you're driving to Magpie, even if it's a few blocks away, just take it. Sacramento blocks are short so get your steps in. 2. Don't order the toast and jam unless you really like toast and jam. Yes, the plum jam is homemade, but the toast is super basic. Unless you're like Vincent in Pulp Fiction, "I gotta know what a $5 milkshake tastes like" then order the $5 toast and jam. 3. When you scroll throw Yelp pictures and see the breakfast skillet, it looks massive. Portion big enough for a feast and enough to share. Just keep in mind, it's not prepared in a 12-inch skillet -- more like a 5-inch skillet. 4. Sunday breakfast ends at 10:30am. I imagine if you show up at 10:25am, you can order breakfast and others in your group can order lunch 5 minutes later. Omelette with French Fries sounds amazing. Next time. 5. If you order the French Toast, ask for the Thai basil and maple syrup on the side. The menu doesn't mention Magpie takes the liberty of pouring the syrup over the entire dish before it arrives to your table. Thankfully, it didn't make the dish too sweet, but as a matter of pattern, I like to dip my French Toast. I like to be the syrup gatekeeper and I recommend Magpie either change their method or at a minimum, let their patrons know by a menu change or the server simply telling them the syrup is already poured over the dish. French Toast - Seasonal Fruit (Grade A) Almond butter, Thai basil, and maple syrup on four halves of thick cut bread. The toast from the "Toast and Jam" is sub par, but the toast in the "French Toast" is the star of the show. A little more than an inch thick and cooked perfectly. Crunchy edges probably from the almond butter it bathes in on the griddle and a gooey middle. If you like bear claws, imagine a bear claw made to order. If you love almond flavor, this will be atop your "Best Of" list. Seasonal Fruit - Peaches and Figs (Grade A+) I'll need to make a mental note that seasonal fruit in August means peaches and figs! My two favorite fruit combinations. They perfectly compliment the main almond profile and of course, it wouldn't be French Toast without a sprinkle of powered sugar to top off the dish. Disclaimer. This was my first time trying this dish so I asked for the basil on the side and I'm glad I did. Basil has such an overpowering aroma and flavor, I believe this would have diminished the dish. Turning from sweet to savory and since I share with my wife, savory was easily obtained from the mushroom omelette. Local Mushroom Omelette (Grade B+) Mushrooms, onion, kale, potato, Sierra Nevada organic cheddar, and three organic eggs. Larger than the skillet and a perfect size for sharing. I'm generally not a fan of omelettes, but while I search for the best French Toast, my wife searches for the best omelette and according to her, this was one of the better ones. High end mushrooms -- not your typical button mushrooms and the cheese was melted so you get that "grilled-cheese" pull when you stick your fork in for a bite. I found myself going back for bite after bite and for me, that is a sign of a good omelette. I usually have a bite and move on, but because it was prepared in a small pan and made the omelette perfectly compact, somehow this helps in the overall taste and flavor. Omelettes that are prepared in the way "Mom" use to make them as a kid, the fold-over, half circle looking style, never appealed to me. Just don't tell my Mom. Overall Restaurant Observations: 1. Outside seating. Take advantage of the outside seating when you have a chance. Magpie sits on the corner of 16th and P so you'll get to people watch from all directions. 2. No tissues in the bathroom so if you're like me and don't see the point of washing your hands when you're just going to grab the faucet or door handle, remember to bring some napkins with you. 3. Never go thirsty. They leave a glass water bottle at the table. 4. Clean interior. Casual eating environment. 5. Groups. Probably can hold 60-70 people inside and another 30 people outside. read more

We came here after we learned that the wait at the Porch without a reservation was 1.5 hours for brunch on a weekend. We got to Magpie and were seated immediately upon checking in for a group of 3 people. Between the 3 of us, we ordered the biscuits and gravy, soup and grilled cheese, and a breakfast plate that came with veggies (including bell peppers, asparagus, and home fries), toast (made with fresh, local bread) bacon and two eggs. Everyone really liked their dish except for my friend who ordered the biscuits and gravy. He said that it was a bland dish and had to add salt and some hot sauce, among other things. He couldn't even finish it. The other dishes we ordered were great. The soup of the day for me was a miso-based soup with beans, asparagus, beets, potatoes, among other veggies. The grilled cheese was made with fresh bread from a local bakery that was quite tasty and a sharp white cheddar cheese. The grilled cheese was awesome but the dish was very heavy and nearly put me into a food coma afterwards. The service was pretty fast and friendly and we enjoyed our time there. Along with the Melting Pot (which is not optional), this place asks you to tip the line cooks in the back, which I appreciate, but then it means we tip the waitress a bit less to compensate. This trendy farm-to-fork cafe has definitely evolved over the years and have fast become a go-to destination in Sacramento. Riding a price line that is a little expensive for Sacramentans but is completely normal or even on the lower end for Bay Area folks, this cafe has a quality menu that they execute well, fit with an equally tasty cocktail bar. The decor is polished, but still feels casual enough that you don't need to really dress up. The food is delicious- I had the tagliatelle pasta dish over the summer and it was the best pasta I've had in Sacramento. Freshly made, not over cooked, complete with a sauce that was very Californian with the amount of produce it had in it. Clams & Fries were also a nice flavor balance, and the Pork Belly Bao was tasty and again, so freshly made. You will not regret going here as I've not yet had a disappointing meal here yet! Toastettes with anchovy and capers. Nice balance of flavors. 2). Crispy Pork Belly - perfectly cooked. Slightly crispy in outside yet the meat and fat was succulent, delicate, and meat VERY tender. Likely cooked in sous vide. Topped with slices of figs, cilantro, frissee with a splash of coriander infused honey. 3). Rigatoni dish was AMAZING. Slight heat the peppers but cools nicely with the ricotta cheese. The sauce was delicious 4). Clams and corn: the ACME homemade super crusty bread was a nice touch to soak up the fennel, corn, tarragon broth. Generous amount of clams as well. Love it! Finally got to go here after a long wait and Magpie didn't disappoint. I came in with my parents back in the winter for a weekend meal with reservations. Our table was one of the nicest in the place with a view out onto the corner. Our waitress was not great, seeming kinda disinterested throughout service. But the meal more than made up for it. The decor is fanciful but not in your face, with birds on the walls, black ceiling, no edison lights, yay, and an amazing honeycomb bathroom. Our meal was just beyond perfection with a wide array of dishes available in a new american or california contemporary style focused on local, seasonal and organic ingredients. My veg soup was outstanding with a lot of variety and a slight spice. The chicken for two somehow had the crispiest skin ever, maybe fried? It had beyond amazing flavor. The potatoes were large and well cooked, lots of spinach as well underneath the bird. Whatever herb stuff on top was too sweet though. Dad's pork chop was juicy and paired well with grits. He liked his basic but elevated salad as well. Overall, lots of food for all of us with me and mom having leftovers, all within great prices. Review note: I have attended several non-profit events, such as by Slow Food Sacramento, where the chef/owners have contributed free bites and meals. Never been to the R Street location- pass this one once every so often. That, and the other place I'd planned on patronizing had plumbing issues, so I tried this place out. I can see parking being a miserable task here- managed to find a 2 hour free space a couple blocks away though. Bloody Mary- could have been called the Salty Mary. Lots of peppery flavor but waaaaaay too much salt. I get using salt to pickle veggies but this was too much. Chicken salad was "very good." "Lots of meat, the right amount of dressing" and "tasty" were the descriptions fielded. Biscuit and gravy (and egg and sausage) was delicious and too much for me to finish in one sitting. Small side of fries was seasoned with some fresh herbs which made them tasty. Probably coming back to try more someday and would not turn down an invite here if I were closer. It can be a pet peeve when a wait staff answers "everything's good" when I ask what they recommend but here EVERYTHING IS GOOD and so beautifully plated too. Fresh, local ingredients, creative preparation, excellent execution and BIG flavors. Really terrific with very fair prices. Each dish was great but the quail was a standout, also great was the heirloom bean soup, a pasta dish, asparagus appetizer and the avocado toast. I've gone here twice for dinner - years apart - and I fell in love w the food all over again this second time. I had a delicious meal last time too so I don't know why it took me so long to return.
