I have been going to Mai Thai for the last dozen years. In the early years, it was quite good. From about 2015 to early 2020, its quality slipped. But during the COVID years, it began emerging into a first rate restaurant. Everything I've tried for both lunch and dinner have been quite good. Some of my favorites include: Eggplant delight -- either with tofu or any of the meats. Surprisingly simple but served with a light but tasty sauce. Panang and red curry dishes come with savory sauces and are delightful. The stir fried dishes are all reliably excellent. The staff is quite nice. The atmosphere leaves something to be desired but the food makes up for it. read more

Went here for a quick thai food fix for takeout. Ordered a red curry with jasmine rice and a pad kee mao + thai iced teas. The curry was good, but had a lot of vegetables in it and the pad kee mao had a good flavoring, but oily. What really contributed to this positive experience was the staff. They were so kind about substitutions and adjustments to the dishes understanding our restrictions in what we could eat. Note that a lot of thai curries/noodles tend to have fish sauce or shrimp paste, so be sure to ask about that before placing your order if it is of concern. Mai Thai has both exceptional cuisine and service, so good I ate lunch there three days in a row. The massaman curry is especially flavorful even at the highest spice level, with a good balance of main ingredients, including protein, potatoes, carrots, and onions. The distinguishing feature of this dish were the prominent slivered onions, different than I've had in other curries but so nice with rice. The portion size is generous and rightfully sized given the price. The waitstaff is efficient and fast, able to handle a downtown lunch rush with ease. The ambiance is pleasant, well decorated, and not crowded. I appreciated that they had Happy TV playing on the TVs. My only suggestion would be to experiment with higher spice levels. Wife and I tried this for the first time since we were craving Thai for the Lunar New Year 2022 (Year of the Tiger). Since we were ordering delivery on a busy night, and since my wife wanted Chu-Chi salmon, we went with Mai Thai, since many of the Thai restaurants that have salmon dishes, didn't offer it for delivery (strange). We saw the positive reviews and sounded like a great alternate Thai place to have versus our regular go to. Pad Thai wasn't bad and little better than some of my other go to places. Not spicy enough. We ordered shrimp for most of the plate meat options, since wife was craving shrimp. They did not disappoint. There was plenty of nice large shrimp in each dish. The wife's Chu-Chi salmon wasn't bad, but not as good as the other places. Sauce was more sweet than hot. We did enjoy the Mai Thai Red Snapper dish. Although it was deep fried, it was still tasty, but little too much grease. Same went with the Eggplant Delight. Dish was very tasty, not as spicy as we wanted, and could have used less oil. Would have liked to give the place 5 starts, since all the dishes were yummy, but two things brought it down a notch. 1.) All the dishes had more oil than we were used to in Thai dishes. My wife's comment was that it was too greasy. You could see the extra oil. 2.) Dishes that claimed to be spicy, really were not. When we asked for more spice, it never was there. Sometimes that is the fault of the delivery app, since this one you had to request it in comments, which restaurants often overlook from my past experiences. Nice place. They did have a sign indicating it would be a wait due to short staff. I had the Mai Thai egg rolls. I forgot it said there was pork skin in the egg roll. Didn't like that but the rest of the egg roll was delicious. The Pad Thai was a little too wet for me but it had good flavor and the chicken breast was cut nicely. The noodles were nicely cooked and the veggies (bell peppers, onions, broccoli) were fresh, but the dish lacked flavor. Pad kee mao is supposed to be at least moderately spicy, and the menu listed it with two out of three possible chili symbols, but I barely tasted any spiciness at all. The Thai iced tea tasted good, but it was extremely, extremely sweet- even for Thai iced tea. I think no matter where you live, you got to have a local Thai spot to hit those unique curry & noodle cravings. Luckily, Mai Thai is nearby and is able to satisfy them. I'll preface by saying that we have only ordered to-go from Mai Thai. I can't speak to the ambience or service, but I will say that our food is always ready when it's time for us to arrive. I'll also say that we have really only ordered our Thai favorites: Pad Thai and Yellow Curry. Sometimes we'll add a Thai tea or Thai coffee, and occasionally a Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. Mai Thai delivered on all these dishes. The Pad Thai has a good mix of ingredients and great flavor. The yellow curry has a very generous portion size and lasts us multiple meals. The curry does run thinner than some others I've tried, but personally I don't mind. It tastes delicious (especially if you pour it on the Pad Thai noodles mmmm...). Mai Thai is also very consistent. We must be ordering from here at least once a month. Never did we have a problem with late preparation, and the food has always been the same level of quality. read more

My husband and I stopped here for dinner before a show. I have a gluten and dairy intolerance which can make it hard to eat out in general. I had looked at the Mai Thai menu before coming here to know I could enjoy a good Thai dinner. I ordered the green curry with a seafood combo and brown rice thai spicy. I love that brown rice was not your normal brown rice and it was served in the shape of a heart. My meal was good and flavorful. I did not find it spicy at all but my husband did. Note, I have been to Thailand before and made jungle curry in a cooking class with 40 Thai peppers and ate every last drop. So I know Thai food and I know spice. After a jaunt on Rainey Street, we scootered over to Mai Thai to satisfy a Thai craving. They were on their last 30 min of being open, but we were warmly welcomed and taken care of quickly. There were several groups still dining in, but our food still came out in a good amount of time. To start, the Pad Thai is probably my favorite in Austin (haven't had a TON yet, but still very impressive). I generally like a little more sweet/thick sauce and this Pad Thai was perfect if that's your style. It was so good, but also a lot of food so I ended up taking some home afterword. My boyfriend got the Basil Fried Rice, and he also really liked it (cleaned his plate). The only note about this dish is that the smell reminded me a little of pizza (because of the basil, I guess?). He wants to try another kind of fried rice next time to compare. The only other comment was that I tired their Thai tea which was just ok. I generally like a more sugary flavor than what I had here. Walked in around 6PM on a Thursday, not that many people so service was pretty quick. They came out with waters already in hand, didn't need to ask. Shared a Pad Thai (with beef) with my date which was priced at $17. Portion was perfect for the both of us to share. The noodles themselves were delicious and I enjoyed the peanut sauce on them. We were offered to make our order spicy between a level of 1-5. We opted for level 3, we were warned that level 3 was quite hot. I'm a person who enjoys really spicy food and level 3 was indeed hot. My mouth burned, my nose ran, and I could still taste the noodles - it was perfect for me, too hot for my date. In hindsight, level 1 would've been ideal for both of us. This is hands-down my favorite place for green curry in Austin. Since I'm not a fan of parking downtown if I can help it, I'm so glad that I can get delivery through UberEats. My curry was overloaded with chicken, so they definitely don't skimp on the protein here. I personally could go for less protein and more vegetables, especially the eggplant. I asked for the brown rice option, which I believe is actually a type of black rice, speckled and with just the right amount of chewiness. I highly recommend both the Green Curry and the "Brown" Rice. I also ordered Tom Kha, the coconut soup with lemongrass, which was also delicious, and unlike most restaurants, they don't charge extra for choosing the shrimp option. A definite plus. I recommend ordering the large size as you will want leftovers later. Although I normally don't order egg rolls, I got the Mai Thai Egg Rolls, which are pork and vegetable. They were well-stuffed and nicely fried, and served as a great lunch the next day after a quick crisping in the oven. Don't miss out on this gem. I especially like the small crunch you get inside them, makes it a little different than the norm. The sauce is really good too. I also order massamaun. It was very flavorful, the chicken it is flavored well, not too spicy. They give a decent amound of chicken in it also. Pad peanut sauce is okay. Im used to Pra Ram having a thicker peanut sauce consistency, almost like gravy on the veggies/stir fry. This was more like a soup or curry. Not bad, just different.
