Just not good enough. Lousy, very slow, disorganized service and mediocre food. It seemed like the wait-staff really didn't have their act together nor did really know what to do in any spot of our meal. We had 3 different waiters ask us if we were ready to order. Then, we waited 50 minutes for the first dish to arrive. The waiters are nice and polite, but totally oblivious and spaced out. They mean well, but are very poorly trained. Getting a glass of water took 15 minutes. Our long wait time for the food was never acknowledged or apologized for by the restaurant until we said something. Our bill never was reduced either, which would have been a nice gesture given that the food took an eternity to arrive. On top of that, the food is just ok. We had an artchoke and prosciutto pizza (undercooked and floury), polenta with sausage (sausage tasted like it was from a box or a cheap diner), and a pork-chop entree (meat was dry and under-seasoned). Everything seemed to be missing something----it was bland, boring, poorly executed, forgettable food. The decor and ambience is inviting. The bar is a nice place for a glass of wine, but other than that, it's just not good enough for New York. It's too far west (Washington & Bethune, 1 block off the west side highway) to ever venture out of one's way for what we experienced. Furthermore, the competition in the west village for great Italian is simply too stiff. I realize the owner is the same one from the legendary trattoria also on Washington Street, Malatesta, which is terrific. I can't understand what happened here at Malaparte, but the owner and chef need to step it up and not rest on the laurels of success they have enjoyed at Malatesta. Were in the neighborhood and looking for a place for lunch. Having been to Malatesta we came across their sister restaurant which happened to be open. We were able to sit outside as it was a very pleasant afternoon. Similar to Malatesta with plates anywhere from 12-18. We started with the special Sardines Siciliana served with arugula salad. Very good! My husband got the burger - delicious! Cooked perfectly on a super soft bun. I had the tuna & avocado salad. This is wonderful and could be ordered as an appetizer to share or perfect for lunch. Nice wine list though we just had water as we had to drive back to Jersey. Definitely would come back and soon! I don't usually have time to waste on a review, which is a shame, as I utilize reviews a lot and ought to give back more. When something is really excellent or really sucks, though, I take the time. This space was Big Wok in the 80's, then it was Baby Buddah for many years after that. it was nice to see something that looked different moving in and I was really wanting it to be good. Unfortunately, it sucked and here is why. The lasagna I got was cold on the inside and, when I asked, they took it and micro-waved it to warm it up. This happened to the woman right next to me, as well, and there is no excuse for this, especially the first week a place is open, when they should be trying to make an especially favorable impression. Of course, you could also chalk it up to it being their first week open, but I don't subscribe to that viewpoint. Second, my friend got filet mignon, which was not cheap. He ordered it medium rare. It came raw and almost inedible. He was not in the mood to complain yet, when the server came to clear the plates and asked if my friend was done, he responded "it's not cooked and I can't eat it." A few minutes later, the manager came up and said "I see you didn't finish the filet mignon." to which my friend said "Yes." The manager then walked away. Now, in most other restaurants, they would offer to either: 1. Get you another plate of it 2. Take something off the bill 3. Offer a free desert, at the very least 4. Show some contrition of some kind 5. Apologize They did NONE of the above. I have had better service and better food at a Greek diner. And this is not an isolated "they had a bad night" incident, as I know of a few other people who had horrible experiences there. Don't make our mistake. Avoid this pit of rudeness and bad, undercooked, salty food. read more

I'm shocked people had bad things to say about this place until I further investigated and saw all of the negative reviews were from men, OK now it all makes sense - The waiters and staff are all "off the boat" Italian men with thick luscious hair, lean bodies, and accents that will make any girl blush. The service is on the laid back side because it truly is run by Italians in a manner we aren't accustomed to, laid back. If you are in a rush to eat, don't dine here. If you want to have a relaxing love affair with food while sitting outdoors in a casual, intimate, romantic setting, this is your choice for dinner. CASH ONLY (another real Italian feature). Each table indoor and outdoor has a candle with paper wrapped around to give the area a nice glow, how clever! Bread is brought to the table, no butter, but there is amazing olive oil on the table (maybe even extra virgin). Feel free to pour the oil in a small plate, mix some pepper and grated cheese and dip the bread away. Asking for more bread isn't frowned upon, so fill up. You will also get a carafe of water so you don't have to look for the waiter every few minutes. Take a look at the specials being offered, try to get something on that list - it's a rule of thumb in these type of establishments. Who am I to break rules? I went with the Lasagna Bolognese and I would say it was easily in my top 10 favorite lasagnas in NYC. I also got the chance to taste another special, the Linguine with seafood. It arrives wrapped like a candy in tissue paper, do not try to remove the food to put it in a plate, it's a rustic place so do not be alarmed! The seafood was plentiful and fresh. The linguine was also cooked just right; al dente! For appetizers i suggest ordering a pizza (if you really don't mind a CARB overload) or Italian sausage with baked polenta cakes. While visiting NYC from Chicago, a friend recommended Malaparte, and it was perfect! Having just returned from Tuscany, I felt like I was back in Italy, in a quaint, European-feeling restaurant with incredibly friendly service. My friend and I shared the Artichoke Heart Salad, the Prosciutto & Arugula pizza, and a pasta special (Shrimp Linguine). All were fresh and flavorful. Wine, served in carafes similar to Italy, was reasonably priced and solid. The only negative is that Malaparte is cash only. A bonus is all the good-looking people...highly recommend for a leisurely, low-key night out. read more

The service here was HORRENDOUS. Went here w friends on my birthday and we called before we went and were told they had a table for six waiting for us. In actuality they did not, were probably just trying to get us there. After waiting 30 mins they finally give us a table outside next to where they place the GARBAGE and it smelled AWFUL. When we asked for a move they said it would take too long. All of us hungry, we just decided to suck it up and order. They brought out our appetizers THIRTY minutes apart. Then brought me a little tiramisu w a candle for my bday but put it on the bill!! When I complained to the manager about overall service he just shrugged his shoulders and said "it was a busy night" - didn't offer any kind of remuneration. This. Place. SUCKS. read more

I recently visited Malaparte for the fifth time since its opening, and I continue to be impressed and delighted by this place. All of the elements--food, service, environment--are perfect. The dimly lit restaurant is cozy and friendly, almost as if you're dining in a friend's kitchen on the Italian countryside. The wine and dinner menus offer a nice variety, yet are concise enough so that every selection is a good one, and no one dish is a forgotten "least favorite." And, the waiters are actually Italian. A nice, quaint Italian restaurant in the West Village with good mood lighting and ambiance. They were nice to accommodate our group of 15 people, and didn't once try to rush us out even when they had other people waiting for tables. Service was friendly and they were always coming around to provide us with refilled water jugs, in addition to offering refills on our drinks. The food was good. I ordered the lasagna and it was very tasty. A bit on the salty side, but you expect that to some degree from a lasagna full of meat, cheese, and sauce. I actually arrived late and ended up eating my lasagna after it was sitting on the table for about 30 minutes - even then it was good, so I would imagine it's even better when hot/warm. This restaurant was the best I've been to in a LONG time... Absolutely an amazing experience. The staff was so kind and very accommodating. REALLY friendly waiters and all very Italian. On top of that, the atmosphere was so lovely. One of the most cozy places I've ever been to. I went on a summer night so they had the whole front wall open but it was still dark and lit with candles everywhere. I can imagine it would be just as great if not better on a winter night. Lastly and possibly MOST importantly- the food was TO die for. And I have high food standards. The best thing I had all night was the seared tuna with avocado appetizer. I was speechless. Had a great meal here last night with my boyfriend and our families. It's a quaint, small place tucked away in the West Village. The ambiance is nice, service is great. The bar area is really small, though - so I wouldn't come here just for a drink. The food was really good: would highly recommend the mussels and the prosciutto pizza. 4 out of 6 people at our table had the Lasagna and everyone completely finished their dish! Dropped by one Sunday evening without reservations, and the host made space for us (we were able to promise to leave before 730 for a table they had reserved). I was actually looking for Malatesta, but it was much further than where we were. Malaparte was a great substitute, however. Loved the decor and atmosphere, very cozy and perfect for good friends catching up or romantic couples. The service was great - seemed to all be Italian men who can say everything oh-so-perfectly. Food was delicious, and I can definitely vouch for wonderful oysters. My artichoke lasagna was hearty but not to die for quite. But to top it all off, there was lambrusco!! So a happy belly. Delicious, affordable Italian food. We came here for a friend's last meal before leaving New York, and it was a great choice. They give you focaccia bread in your bread basket, which is one of my favorites! I had the garganelli with porcini. The garganelli was beautifully made, and covered with mushrooms. It wasn't all porcini, but I'm a huge fan of mushrooms anyway, so the addition of button mushrooms was welcome. The carbonara and lasagna, which I also had a few bites of, were also good choices. I split the pork chop, and it was very schnitzel-like. Tasty, but not what I was expecting. The table next to us ordered the cornish hen, which smelled super good! Wait-a-minute, we are in west West village right! It should be overpriced and packed with tourists and pretentious, and the taste at best boring. What a surprise! The pizza is an actual real decent one by ITALIAN standard and it's decently price too. The pasta is also made with skill and taste. The ambiance and service is European (nice but they won't go a mile out of their way for you). Nice cheap wine selection makes it easy. Can you find better? Well ... it's hard in fact I only know a few places and they are far (at best crossing a bridge, or multiply your bill by 5, at worst crossing an ocean or multiply by 10 or both). I came here while visiting New York, and my friend, who lives in the area, recommended we meet here. I'm so glad we did. I'm always a little hesitant with Italian food because it has the ability to be so generic. And while the menu was small and featured fairly common options, they were each spectacular. The staff, who spoke solely in Italian to one another, felt like family serving you. They offered us tastes of two different wines as we couldn't decide and then after going through a craft (a little over 3 full glasses, definitely the deal to do) they gave us each another glass for free. The Pinot they have available by glass was delicious! The server could even tell which was which just by looking at the color, it was wonderful. My friend got the lasagna and I got the pizza special. We shared both and it was truly a gift. The pasta had a homemade Bolognese sauce and large tube noodles. It was a pretty substantial portion as well. We couldn't even finish the pizza afterward. The pizza was a a thin crust mozzarella, lightly sauced. It had a salted prosciutto, softened potatoes and sea salt on top. Remarkable. I could eat it for the rest of my life and find new joys each time! They started us with focaccia bread, oil and balsamic vinegar. It was good but skip if you plan on ordering a couple things because it will fill you up and I wish I could have eaten more of my entrees! The food doesn't taste Italian. I ordered carrot soup as a starter. The only thing I enjoyed about it was the fact that was warm, otherwise it was spicy and tasteless. Do Italians even add curry in their soup?! I also got the avocado toast as a side dish. It was a bit heavy on the salt but it was better than the rest of the dishes... Then, I had the Spaghetti alla Chitarra as a primo piatto, which was on the daily menu. The sauce was bland with cheap canned tomatoes and mozzarella that was definitely NOT filante as Italians do it... The only Italian thing about the dessert menu was Tiramisu... Malaparte is NO Malatesta. Don't let the hostess trick you into going here instead of waiting in line at Malatesta. For background, Malaparte is the sister restaurant of Malatesta. Because Malatesta is overwhelmingly popular during dinner with long wait times, the hostesses here will recommend that guests on the wait list go to Malaparte instead, claiming that it's the same chef with more or less the same menu. Do not be fooled - Malaparte is FAR inferior. I fell for this trap one Saturday weekend after waiting in line at Malatesta for several minutes. We walked up the street to Malaparte and orderd the spaghetti a la carbonara, veggie lasagne, and lasagne bolognese. The carbonara was shockingly tasteless - totally bland and not creamy with bits of un-flavorful bacon scattered in. I mean, the dish is colorless and completely void of basic things like salt. The veggie lasagne was mediocre, also lacking in flavor but had a decent texture. The lasagne bolognese was the best. I have no complaints about that, but does it really have to take one dish out of three to be palatable? I was really disappointed here, especially since Malatesta is such a great restaurant. I will never step foot inside Malaparte again. read more

Oh, Malaparte. How you complete me. Full disclosure - I grew up and continue to live across the street from this restaurant. That being said, I wanted to hate it *so bad* when it first moved in, as it represented all the things that I hated (and couldn't control) about my ever changing neighborhood of birth. This spot used to house a really wonderfully homie middle-class (read: not shitty takeout) Chinese joint by the name of Baby Buddha; their $6.95 perfectly-earthy Boneless Stewed Chicken lunch special is but a vague memory now, which, come to think of it, might be one of my first memories, period.. alas, I digress. Anyway, after a couple years of passive-aggressive boycotting, I finally gave the place a try, and I'm so so so happy I did. This classy-yet-rustic Italian spot is the surprisingly well-priced, no-bullshit Italian joint I never knew I needed; now I eat here almost weekly. Some really excellent stuff on the menu here, be it brunch or dinner; I highly recommend the seared tuna / avocado appetizer, which comes plated in simple cubes with a few pieces of frisée and a lovely lemon-y sesame seed dressing. Simply put, it's all the flavors you come to expect from an Asian dish bearing these sort of ingredients, but with a distinctly Italian prep style and swagger that makes it kind of a unique sort of dish. This is one of those dishes that gets eaten slower and slower as you go on - it's simply too lovely not to savor. As far as pizza goes, GF and I love the white pie with Prosciutto and Arugula. It's a simple pie hovering only slightly larger in size (and obscenely higher in rating) when compared to a Domino's medium - really a perfect size to share with one or two people, depending on appetites. All the pastas our lovely, though our favorite is the Carbonara. The Tiramisu is incredibly sexy and upsetting, and I wouldn't recommend leaving without it if you've got even the tiniest bit of room left, stomach-wise. Some other things to note - The inside can get a little loud when full, it's CASH ONLY, and only open for dinner during the weekdays. Also, the waitstaff are phenomenally warm and impossibly European, and most of my female friends can't pass the place without remarking on the quality of the various waiters' accents / beards / manbuns. When it's nice out, their outdoor seating is nice enough for a simple espresso (yay weekend meetings!) and their Pizza is good enough to take out. No delivery though, I think. stopped in here for late dinner with my roommate. first impression was an overall rustic, charming, homey feel which i love! low lights with candles and wood everywhere, yes please. we started off with two glasses of red wine at $8 each (chianti for me, cab for him) and delicious complimentary bread. the bread basket was a mix of focaccia and french with a bottle of olive oil, that stayed on the table the entire meal. for starters we got the burrata with prosciutto & arugula. the creamy cheese paired excellently with the sharp tangy prosciutto. we then shared the pizza special along with the porcini rigatoni. the rigatoni was perfectly al dente tossed in a delicious light sauce. the pizza had crumbled sausage, arugula and a creamy cheese. not your standard mozzarella. the crust was light and crispy. we were so full that we had to pass on dessert, but the plates of tiramisu coming out from the kitchen looked so good. i must get when i come back! read more

Its gets busy in the evening! We got a table on Sat night at 6:30 without much wait but were told that the next reservation is at 7:30 so we would need to finish by then. So it wasn't exactly a sit down, relax and enjoy the dinner kind of experience. But....coming to the food, it was excellent! I had the Rigatoni with pesto and it was DELiCIOUS! The toasted almonds on top was a nice touch. The four stars are really for this dish. The bread they served in the beginning was fresh too. Good homey space for Italian in the West Village, and a sister restaurant to Malatesta just further up Washington St. Their claim to fame is the delicious home made pasta they use at both places and it doesn't disappoint. Spaghetti carbonara and garganelli with porcini were wonderful. Service was a bit odd because we visited on halloween, and the waiters were dressed up as various figures like Jesus and Gregorian monks and whatnot. But I think it is pretty casual in general. If you want to try a large number of things and feel full without breaking the bank, figure on one pasta per person and share an entree 2 to 3 ways. You'll be nice and full and be out $25 or less per person after tax/tip. read more

Mussels were a little fish-y. But the portion was big! -Di Porcini Tartufata - Truffle Mushroom Pizza - Get this if you love truffle and mushrooms. It was very good. -Di Rucola E prosciutto Di Parma - Prosciutto pizza - This was mediocre. My friend didn't even finish her's. Tucked away in the more quieter part of the West Village is Italian restaurant Malaparte. Welcoming and romantic, the sister restaurant to Malatesta Trattoria offers an underwhelming but reliable menu with great beer and wine options. The menu comes inspired by Rimini, Italy on the coast of the Adriatic Sea - the hometown to restauranteur and founder Emanuele Attala. My friend and I came here for authentic, classic Italian food and having been to the sister restaurant I knew Malaparte wouldn't disappoint. As we walked north on Washington Street, the streets were fairly quiet. The restaurant ended up being on the corner of Bethune Street with tables and chairs set up for the oddly mild December evening. Walking in past the bolded handwritten 'Cash Only - ATM Inside' signs and menus, we glanced around to wait for someone to seat us. We lucked out since no tables were available but we were able to sit and eat at the bar. The bar area felt like the rest of the restaurant - rather than the standard feeling of being segregated from everyone else. We were quickly offered water with bread, olive oil and salt. Our server behind the bar quickly and neatly set-up our place with paper place mats whilst consistently apologizing for "the reach". The woman who originally sat us passed by to check to see if everything was ok. We said yes but if a table opened up we would like to sit there. She straddled a pessimistic/apprehensive vibe while eventually saying that she'd look out for a table. Ultimately, we wound up switching to a table which was a smooth transition with three people moving our plates over just in time for our appetizer. We decided to eat light and still indulge so we opted for the Di Rucola E Agrumi, a salad with rucola, grapefruit, orange & mint. A part of me was reluctant to have something (anything) with mint in it but I wanted to try something new. The salad had a lightly sweet dressing with thinly glazed orange peels with just a hint of mint that was not the least bit overwhelming. Now the part where we indulged was splitting the Di Porcini Tartufata, one of their six slice pizzas with porcini mushrooms, mozzarella, truffle oil and grana (a famous cheese in Italy!). The pizza dough was not too thick or thin and each bite was tasty and sent your taste buds into pure happiness. Other appetizer options seemed only ok (standard mussels, soup of the day and seared tuna) and mains seemed more promising but pasta options appearing to be dry (one had no tomato base, another just pesto). However, from the looks of it each plate that passed us by looked like exceptional portions that promised fresh ingredients and satisfied tastebuds. We declined dessert - although that menu seemed appealing offering plates for everyone - and got the bill. My friend went to the restroom, giving me an opportunity to better observe my surroundings. The places was dimly lit with soft lighting and candles, allowing for a romantic, comforting atmosphere. Servers kept buzzing past and everyone around me was either laughing, eating or smiling after taking a bite of their food. I noticed mostly smaller parties were here and one birthday party, which I later learned got a reservation ahead of time only because there were 4+ people. (Otherwise, reservations are not taken allowing those people like my friend and I to have a chance to walk-in and sit down). Throughout the time we were eating until it was time to actually leave, the front of the venue became quite crowded. It was clear it wasn't because of the weather but people were anxious to snag a table and make sure Malaparte was where they were having dinner that night. . However, it didn't make the crowd any less annoying as it took several moments to physically get out the door. Meanwhile, the rest of the restaurant was still intimate and cozy with the hum of other conversations and laughter filled the air making you realize that music was not require to enjoy the evening. Wow I was expecting the same great food as Malatesta down the street, not so. We shared the grilled Calamari, it was way over cooked, rubbery. The portion was really small compared to Malatesta. I had the Lasagna Bolognese. It was ok, but they put tons of sauce on top and it tasted from a jar. My friend had Spaghetti & Clams, it was very bland. We just returned from a big birthday brunch there - we were a party of 20 including 6 kids below the age of 5. While it could have easily devolved into a chaotic and cringe-inducing situation, the waitstaff never lost their good attitude and were deft and attentive the entire time. Even more impressive, they were open to food substitutions and any other customization we requested - a rarity at any restaurant in the city when such a big party is involved. Thank goodness for Instagram because I would have never found this place otherwise. My hubs and I (along with my sister in law and her boyfriend) decided to try this place on one of the most hottest nights this summer and were blown away by the food. Everyone ordered a round of vino sans me Bc I'm on a hiatus. Proceeded to other the mussels and they certainly didn't disappoint. Red arrabiata sauce simmered over the perfectly sautéed mussels - every one of them was succulently opened and drenched in sauce and fresh tomato. The foccacia was on another level - so good: Rosemary, olive oil, and salt. Need I say more? Entrees consistent of all the pastas: rigatoni con porcini, lasagna (my entree), spaghetti with pest and spaghetti carbonara. AMAZE. The lasagna was so delicately made and oozed with cheese and beef. The pesto was so fresh and the pastas were all homemade. I can't wait to go back!!!! read more
