Thanks to Yelp and my new Yelp friend for putting Mama Lu's on my radar -- as I would not have known about this restaurant on my own. Customer service is professional and friendly; the staff working the floor was always bustling about with set-up, clean-up, delivery, or assisting customers. Among the first things that impressed us was the actual glass glassware (yay, not plastic!) and large clear, plastic pitcher of water left at our table (we're big water drinkers especially with this cuisine!). I appreciate the visuals on the menu, with corresponding numbered item! We've enjoyed the food so much that we've returned 3 times within 1 week, wanting to experience something new. I had a late lunch here with family on a Sunday afternoon. It wasn't packed around 1:30pm and there were plenty of open tables available. The server was nice but when he brought out the water, he splashed it on the table and walked away. I had to call him over to wipe away the puddle so that was a weird interaction. They never came by to check on us or refill our water so the service was definitely lacking. We ordered the XLB, chili wontons, pan fried buns and a whole friend hen. The buns were not crispy but soggy. The XLB barely had any soup and flavor. I liked the chili wonton the best. It had the most flavor. My brother wanted the fried hen and it just tasted like bland fried chicken. It needed more seasoning or sauces. Overall, the food was underwhelming and not as good as the original location. I definitely prefer the other dumpling place in Tustin because they are more consistent with flavor and quality but there's always a long line. This location is located next to an Asian supermarket and a Meet Fresh. I am happy more Asian options are opening up in the area so I would come back to try the dim sum or other Chinese dishes on their expansive menu but I don't think I would come back for the dumplings. read more

If you're looking for consistently solid dumplings and quick service, this is the place. It's about time OC got a Mama Lu's. Parking: It's located in a private shopping plaza with tons of free parking. Xiao long bao (XLB): This is really they you should come here. Hot, juicy, and consistently well-made. There's no crazy flavors your choices are just pork or pork with crab roe. Pan-fried buns are also solid. Crispy bottom, soft top, and juicy pork filling. Wonton dumplings were just okay. The filling was good but the chili could have some more seasoning. Of note, if you've been to the original Mama Lu's location, this one does not offer peanuts and cucumbers while you are waiting. But I love that they leave a pitcher of water for you. The service here is quick. They hustle to get your food out and occasionally check up on you. But if you need something, I recommend you flag someone down. This is a good place to go for some comfort food or when you're craving some great dumplings. Both the Yang Chow Fried Rice and the House Special Chow Mein were tasty, with generous portions of shrimp and other meats. The juicy dumplings were served hot and definitely lived up to their name. The only thing keeping me from giving five stars were the Har Gow--though the shrimp filling was delicious, the wrappers were a tad too soft or sticky and fell off when trying to lift the dumplings out of the steam tray. Their original location is to die for, but this one seemed to lack flavor and the vibes inside are very empty and strange. the saving grace for me were their famous soup dumplings which were incredibly juicy and filled with rich and tender pork. However, the other less popular dishes we tried had no depth of flavor and seemed like something you could throw together at home. Additionally, our scallion pancakes were undercooked and had very little scallions. Overall, not the best experience. There was no wait time and we were seated promptly! Minimalistic interior with a touch of traditional Chinese decor. Our server was attentive and efficient! What we got: -Shanghai rice cake: we got this on a whim, and it was so good as one of our carb dishes! good mild flavor and just the right amount of salty and was one of my favorites! -Salt & pepper wings: this had a good crunch on the outside, while the inside of the chicken wings were moist. Can never go wrong with wings! -Beef wrap: a bit oily but I think beef wraps tend to be on the oiler side? somewhat dry with a milder flavor than I expected compared to the beef wraps I've had at other restaurants in the past -Honey walnut shrimp: shrimp was crispy on the outside while being soft on the inside. very standard and classic dish, one of my all time favorites! -Fish fillet with black bean: the fish was so tender and soft, as if it melted in my mouth. This is our go-to Cantonese place for Tustin/Irvine area. The servers are pretty attentive and they ofter to box your leftovers for you. Ample seating for small and larger groups. Easy parking. We usually come for the weekday lunch special which is full portioned size for dine-in. We usually ask for low salt (or soy sauce) and less sugar (Mongolian Beef). We typically bring about half the lunch home as leftovers. Last Saturday evening, we decided to do carry-out of the exactly same order and learned that you pay higher dinner time prices AND get smaller portions because the carryout containers are lunch portion size. The problem I had here was everything was super oily, their singapore vermelli was very oil, their shanghai chow mei also was very oily. Tried their potstickers, it was good but again way too oily. There is a lot of seating available inside & the dining room can accommodate several large parties. We liked the shu mai but didn't like the spare ribs - probably won't get dim sum next time. I love Mama Lu's. I was finally reacquainted with the beef roll ($12.99) and thank goodness because I've forgotten how good the one at Mama Lu's tastes. Because there are so many mid ones out there, I've stopped ordering them altogether. It's safe to report that the beef roll here is absolute fire. The wrap is thin, flakey, and had just the right amount of crisp. The beef is tender and not at all sinewy. I loved the sweet (er) dipping sauce that really melded the sweet and savory flavors. This was also my first time trying their non dumpling food items. Having been to the OG one in the 626, I was pleasantly surprised to see them expand to this location. I was initially worried about the quality since when places start expanding, sometimes quality dips. Fortunately my worries were put to rest because my normal dishes tasted the same! For those that don't know, Mama Lu's is known for their soup dumplings , so no surprise that it was just as flavorful as ever. The seaweed fish was also pretty tasty. What happened to their dumplings? Adding the aluminum trays to their xiao long bao is a travesty, it overcooks the bottom and makes it soggy, and the top is undercooked. I'd suggest this to people who are into americanised chinese food and want to bridge more into chinese takeout dishes. Obviously had to try their xlb as that was the hype and it was okay. Decent flavor and portion wise but thick skins. Not really artisanal. You can request for ginger which still taste fresh, again medium thick strips. Beef roll- less sauce than other chains and less oily. The meat can be a bit dry so I think I prefer more sauce/sweet profile. They do fry stuff really well Lunch special 15.99 salt and pepper squid. If I were to go back I'd probably recommend this. A bit oily, but they really shine in fried food. The portion is shareable and you also get a hot and sour soup. The chunks of squid per noticeably squid and bigger chunks rather than batter which I appreciate. Did need the jalapeño to cut through the fried, but the batter was crispy and light. Ordered xiao long bao and vegetable string beans. It's sad to leave 3 stars reviews for me since I had been a fan of mama Lus in their LA locations. Xiao long boa for some reasons are a bit greasy to me. I understand that in order to make xiao long bao juicy requires fat. Yet, it's a bit much for me. String beans: I had confirmed with them that there is no meat in the dish and I double checked the menu. This Mama Lu's location has been open in Orange County for two years now... and I finally got a chance to try it. I was excited not to have to make the drive to LA, but the food was underwhelming. This location is a casual dining location which connects to the Rivera Food Service, an Asian grocery store. There is also a Meet Fresh stand inside the Mama Lu's. We came on a Saturday at lunch time, and they were pretty busy but we were able to get seated right away. We ordered the beef chow mein, shrimp har gow, siu mai, orange chicken, beef wrap, fish fillet with vegetables, stir fried string bean with Chinese sausage, and walnut shrimp. The beef chow mein was average, although the noodles were a little dry and the ratio of noodles to beef was small. The beef itself was very good and tender, and was probably my favorite among the dishes. However, there was probably 3X the amount of beef to chow mein... so this is good if you love meat. The shrimp har gow was okay, but I would not order this again. The dough fell apart as soon as I picked it up with my chopsticks. Flavor was good. The siu mai was average although a little dry. The orange chicken was very good, not as good as Panda Express. However, the portion size was huge and you could really taste the orange flavor. It was very crispy. 4 stars. The fish filet with vegetables was very salty, although it was tender. The stir fry string beans were soggy and was packed with msg. The walnut shrimp was very crispy and tasty. I would have preferred a little more mayo, but I really enjoyed this dish- 4 stars. Service was lacking here as they were busy and there were only a few workers and they were busy bringing out food. Our waitress was nice, but she never came to check on us and we needed a refill on napkins. I'm not sure I would come back to this location. I think I would rather go to the Monterey Park (the best!) or the Pasadena location. We just went back to Mama Lu's for a birthday in the family. We brought our relatives with us, the ones who used to go to Sam Woo's way back when they were around. It was our tradition to have a meal there for birthdays. So we started Mama Lu's birthday meals this year after finding them. We called ahead of time to make reservations just in case it was packed due to a large party. We were seated as soon as we arrived. The staff as usual, was quick as well very friendly and attentive during our entire dining experience. Just like before, the restaurant was clean, well lit and inviting. It's quite cold inside, so make sure to bring sweaters or you'll be headed back to the car like we did. I forgot mine, or I should say I didn't have one since it's been so hot. I ended up ordering myself an oolong tea which helped me warm up until the food arrived. What we ordered this time around; #1 - juicy pork dumplings x 2. This never gets old. Paired with their chili oil and black vinegar, perfection. #56 - pork chop with spicy salt. Requested by my kids. This was devoured by everyone in our party. #49 - orange chicken, because this is a must have here #78 - string beans, another requested dish by my kids #84 - eggplant with garlic sauce. I love eggplant so I always order this #30 - beef chow fun. Those thick rice noodles and the beef are absolutely delicious together. #69 - scrambled egg and shrimp. The MIL ordered this. When I heard it, I was like...uh...weird. This was good though. The eggs are light and moist, the shrimp cooked perfectly and plump. #24 - house special chow mein #43 - hot and sour soup. It was so tasty, well flavored and full of the fixings that are normally in this type of soup that other restaurants are lacking or skimp on. X 2 Thai tea with refills I unfortunately wasn't able to take photos of the food. My little one had to go to the restroom right as they started bringing the food over to our table. I was literally rushing back so I could take pictures but by the time we returned to the table, the food had already been passed around and missing over half out of every plate. Darn. That's ok. I stopped by Mama Lu's Dumpling House in Tustin and was honestly blown away by how consistently delicious everything was. We ordered a big spread, and every single dish delivered. The Walnut Shrimp was perfectly crisp with a creamy glaze that wasn't overly sweet. The Juicy Pork Dumplings lived up to their name--super flavorful with the perfect soup-to-meat ratio. The Pork Chop with Spicy Salt had that ideal crunchy coating and just the right kick. I loved the Shanghai Rice Cake too; chewy, savory, and comforting. The Beef Wrap was one of my favorites of the night--flaky, warm, and filled with tender beef. The Seafood Fried Rice was loaded and tasted really fresh, not greasy at all. Their Siu Mai and Red Bean Pastry rounded out the meal perfectly. And if you like something a little different, the Salt & Pepper Bombay Duck Fish is a must-try--crispy, light, and super flavorful.
