Yeah I tried take out from this Sushi place courtesy of my friend Jeff, and I was pleasantly surprised. The sushi was pretty standard: everything was pretty good, and nothing was bad. Jeff got us bento boxes, and I was blown away by the value. You get so much food for a good price. My bento box came with Tempura, Nigiri, Sashimi, Salad, and a Sushi Roll. This place might be the best bang for your buck sushi place I've ever been to. My friend Jeff got the Chicken Teriyaki, and that looked like a good value as well. Cousin and I were craving some Japanese food and ended up ordering from here since it was so close from the house. I ordered a bento box that included gyoza, assorted tempura, salad, and my main entree was chicken teriyaki. My cousin ordered a spider roll with a miso soup. Although it states on their menu that the bento boxes includes a miso soup, they do not honor the offer for to-go orders. I don't mind that they made this change but they should at least update their menus both online and in store, so it can be clear for customers. The food itself was good! The chicken teriyaki was cooked well and well portioned, and the tempura was still crunchy. My cousin found the Spider Roll to be filling and enjoyable! Total cost for both the bento box and Spider Roll was $27 We called ahead of time, and order took a total of 20 minutes to complete. We chose the punk rock roll. And we also ordered the deep fried philly roll. Let's say it was all average... for the stuff I tried at least. They gave us 2 tuna sashimi 2 salmon sashimi, 1 ea of the salmon, tuna, scallop, and ebi (shrimp) nigiri. The salmon was good/average but not stringy like other places. The tuna wasn't as soft but not bad. The punk rock roll was definitely my favorite of them all. I would get it again. The deep fried philly roll was eh.. it had too much rice not enough salmon and cream cheese for me, the ratio was off. I want to try other rolls next time I come here. Or even the udon noodles. We got the bento box advertised on the website which was good but does not come with the soup like it advertises on the website. When I called to ask, the lady said that's only for "dine-in" option...there's no outdoor seating option and definitely no "dine-in" option either for obvious reasons right now. When I went inside to pick up the order, she had me sign a receipt but there's no clear division between pens that have already been used a sanitized versus unsanitized. As for the food, although the roll and the bento box was alright, the tempura was greasy. Some pieces tasted like they had been made earlier and left to cool down and heated again. There wasn't the usual light crispness of typical tempura that's fresh due to the type of batter that is used in tempura. This batter tasted greasy and a little tough in some areas. If I came back here I might just get the rolls and nix any tempura. If I came back here I'd also wear gloves to touch anything in here. But if you came here, also be aware of these things and don't believe everything you see on their website since they're not always as advertised and no post to clarify any changes due to the current pandemic. read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while now but I almost always forget that this plaza exists. We stopped by here for dinner a while back and the wait was insane. It wasn't that bad today but all of the tables were filled. Luckily, the line wasn't out the door into the cold. Waited the 15 minutes that they told me. Went next door for a fruit tea. Got home and the sushi was a bit lukewarm. Not the best sign. Maybe it was the rice but I feel like I prefer my sushi to be a bit cold rather than anything else. The portions are decent and while the fish was ok, not super fresh and cold. I wouldn't say that this is my favorite sushi place in the area. But it's not bad. We had an early dinner here on mother's day. We went here because our usual Japanese places do not open again until 5 pm or so and we did not want to wait for a table. There are several tables open so we were seated right away. 1. Bento box with chicken. I tried some of the chicken and they were dry. I didn't get to try to gyoza because my son like them. The Cali rolls were okay. 2. Bento box with beef. This was bad. The meat was tough like beef jerky. I only ate about a third of them. The tempura was average. The nigiri was edible. 3. Sashimi platter. Probably the best dish. The fish tasted fresh and were thick slices. We may try this place again but we will avoid the bento boxes. read more

Very disappointing ramen. The noodles were from a packaged dry noodle. For $18.95, I would've expected fresh ramen noodles. The bento box typically comes with a small portion of vegetables but there were no vegetables. Service was ok-asked for dressing on side for salad and they forgot. Maneki has been open for quite some time, and my wife and I have never really considered making the 4 minute drive down there to try them out just due to the fact that we were suckers for Satomi Sushi in Newark. We finally bit the bullet and was craving sushi however did not want to make the drive out to Newark so we settled for Maneki. We ordered 3 rolls that not only lacked flavor but wouldn't even stay together once picked up! Disappointed in the execution and taste. Massive sushi rolls!!! Usually I would love this, but the rolls were mostly rice so I was disappointed with that. We were debating if we should get the sushi boat or rolls and ended up just ordering rolls a la carte. In theme with massive rolls- the nigiri pieces had huge slabs of fish so maybe that's a better alternative. DINNER Sushi rolls- I can't speak for what rolls we got bc I didn't do the ordering but they were all of similar variation: tempura/flakes, imitation crab, cuts of tuna or salmon, sauce, and RICE. Nigiri plate- generous cuts Calamari- too chewy Soft shell crab- good The service was nice and accommodating to reservations for a large party. Visited this place since it was close to work. Above average sushi is my best description. I had the BMW roll and the yakatori. Do not get the yakatori. Maneki Sushi wavers between a 2 and 3 star in my book for the food, but service was quite attentive and I did enjoy one of the rolls. With a typically casual, slightly dimly-lit interior, the venue had a more intimate feel than I was expecting, and it seemed to be a popular joint for dates and friends' nights out. One thing I do want to mention is how similar many of the rolls on the menu seemed. I felt that a large portion boasted of shrimp tempura inside, which made ordering for variety difficult. I'm not sure if substitutions are allowed, but while I can see the feasibility of having so many similar rolls, it makes the fare somewhat one-dimensional. I've been coming here for at least 5 years and it's sad to see how Maneki fell off. My family used to get the bento lunch/dinner bowls and they were pretty generous for a reasonable price. And I was eating one of their Firecracker rolls on a weekly basis. The management changed a couple years ago and it's been downhill since. The quality of the fish has dropped, doesn't taste as fresh anymore, and whoever they have making the rolls doesn't have the ratio of fish to rice down. (Either a huge piece of fish with tiny rice or all rice and a sliver of fish.) Their bento bowls are SO much smaller than they used to be it's kind of ridiculous. I get that prices increase - but making the portions smaller on top of that is a no-no. To top it off, we called today for take-out and the person on the phone gave me attitude - didn't even let me finish my sentence when I just wanted my teriyaki sauce on the side. My brother and his wife raves about Maneki Sushi so, over Thanksgiving weekend, our entire family came here for lunch. This is one of the very few sushi places that they love in the Fremont/Union City area that is close to where they live. Location is easy to find. Big parking area. Service is excellent. The waiter was very attentive and checks on us frequently on how the food tastes, and if we need anything else (i.e. water, beverages, additional order, etc.) Hands down one of the best sushi place I've ever eaten! Their sushi rice is off the hook! Hard to describe but tastes so different and yummy compared to other places! The pieces are huge so it's definitely worth the $ you're paying for. We used to love Maneki but since it's new management it has not been the same. The rolls are still decent but the bento boxes aren't what they used to be. The portions of the salmon are a lot smaller and the chicken was too chewy. The chicken was a lot thinner before and more tasty. We also had to flag someone down every time we needed tea or anything for that matter and never got checked on. Since our last visit we've been looking for a new sushi spot. =( read more

This sushi restaurant is no competition for places like Satomi, Aniki's, and Mioki, which all carry better quality sushi, but for a price. Maneki has good quality sushi rolls and bento boxes for very decent prices. You can get a chicken teriyaki bento box dinner with gyoza and tempura for $11! This would probably cost $15+ at the other sushi spots in Fremont. The rolls here are also really good, but I would stay away from the sashimi. I ordered the chirashi bowl a couple nights ago and was so disappointed; the sashimi slices were so thin and small, and it didn't taste all that fresh. I've seen many restaurants come and go from this spot over the years. I'm so glad Maneki is it's newest resident and will hopefully be it's last! We've been in dire need of a good Japanese restaurant on this side of Union City and we finally have one. Their Poki Salad is a fave with almonds added for a nice twist in texture and taste. Their rolls are good as well and priced comparably to other Japanese restaurants in the area. The service is just as good. Another plus is their green tea ice cream. It's my favorite flavor of ice cream but different restaurants sometimes go wrong with their green tea when they carry the wrong brand. If you love green tea ice cream like I do, you'd know it's not green tea when its that soapy, melon tasting brand. Iww! Maneki definitely carries the good stuff! If you're looking for a decent sushi meal within the area, this is the place to go. Came in with a friend around late noon for Linner (or is it Dunch? Whatever lunch + dinner is). Entering, the ambiance was quiet. There was probably 1 or 2 other groups eating (and more on the way as we ate our meal). My friend and I was seated in the back by the cashier. Not to sound mean, but their service was terrible. No one came to refill our drinks or to check up on us to see if we were enjoying our meal. If you wanted their attention, you would need wave them down. The ambiance was mediocre. The decor consisted of mostly red and black. The lighting is kinda dim. When I first entered, the first thing that caught my attention was how the spacing of the place. There's enough moving space between aisles and such, but the table spacing felt cramped. They added small walls between each booth and I think their idea is to give each booth their own space, but it felt small and cramped. The menu offers a variety of rolls based on what kind of "fan" you are. Are you a fan of Unagi? What about salmon or veggies? They offer many different rolls under those categories. I ordered the Lion King Roll ($11,50) and a Red Rock Canyon ($12.95). Both rolls tasted average to me, nothing special but you can never go wrong with a Lion King Roll!
