I've ordered take out here plenty of times. I do hope they have dine in sometime. They are a standard sushi spot in my opinion. You can't go wrong with most of the items you order here. I've eaten sushi for every year for the past 8 years so I've grown to just eat the plain rolls/sashimi. Bento boxes I personally have not eaten their bento boxes. The most I've gotten was a piece of tempura from somebody else's bento box. It was a good piece of broccoli tempura. I've watched friends/coworkers eat their bento boxes and they seem to have enjoyed them. Sushi I love sushi!! The last roll I got was a All Hamachi roll since yellowtail is my favorite fish. Yellowtail is a fatty fish that always hits the spot for me. They have all tuna and salmon options for the roll also. I lean towards the more basic rolls as I'm being more health conscious. The more sauces you get, the unhealthier the food becomes. Go all out tho! Sushi is meant to be enjoyed. TLDR; If you order a bento box togo it will not come with a miso soup unless it was because we came 40 minutes before they closed. I understand if that's the case. Sushi is usually consistent here so try any of the rolls. read more

After seeing that this was "hot on Yelp" (based on bookmarks) I thought Id decide to check it out. I'm always looking for new places to try out. So we decided to head out here for our New Years Eve dinner. We had the Speedracer (spicy tuna with shrimp tempura) perfect amount of spiciness and was one of our favorites. We also ordered the caterpillar (avocado and unagi) this one had lot of avocado which was sliced thinly ad placed on the roll and looked like a caterpillar, though it needed some eyes (lol) I remembered reading about the 1000 Bolt and though we should try it out and we did. It was good and we wondered what the white ingredient was that was on top (I thought it was fish, husband thought it was scallop) we asked the waitress and she said it was scallop. It was lightly bbq'd and a nice sauce was drizzled on top. After 3 rolls we were both stuffed. Though, I was wondering if they served edamame (I didn't see it on the menu and typically every sushi joint Ive been to serves it to you when they bring you the drinks) I asked if they had and any and she brought me a small bowl of it. When we received the bill I noticed that they didn't charge for it. That was nice. They serve more than sushi. Bento boxes are on the menu as well as udon (thick noodle soup), veggie tempura (yum), katsu, chicken / beef teriyaki plates & salads. The place is small and the servers are very attentive, coming by every so often to check on everything. Food is fresh and tasted great. I was hoping to eat more but their rolls are nice sized and you'll get full fast. Prices are reasonable. Interior is nice and they have a big screen tv. A hometown staple for me! I moved away recently but whenever I'm back in town each week for work I always order my usual from here - Red Rock Canyon roll and a spicy salmon hand roll. My go-to order for over 10 years now. I've been to many sushi restaurants but nothing compares to my go-to from here. Service is fast and my food is always ready without delay. Maneki is a restaurant I only go to if I am really, really craving sushi and japanese food and there is nowhere else to go and Yokohama is closed. The hostess or waiter has horrible customer service. She basically ignored me standing in front of her and didn't even acknowledge me waiting. I had to call three times in order for my order to be taken over the phone, and the first time I called, there was a sheer ringing sound. I was disappointed since I came to the restaurant shortly after calling and saw it wasn't very busy. In fact, there were multiple workers, so it annoyed me that it took three calls for them to pick up the phone. I only ordered the takoyaki since I had a bad experience with the fish. The last time I ordered sushi, it tasted very old and rubbery. Takoyaki isn't so bad, I just wish there were more vegetables in it like maybe corn or something, and a little more seasoning and flakes. C'mon Yelpers! If you think this place is anywhere near good, you have not experiences Satomi's, which is the best. I was so excited to try Maneki since it is one of the few sushi places that does not close after lunch hours until dinner time. Biggest regret... First of all our waiter was incredibly lacking in all food service skills. He did not come to take our drink orders or food orders for an unreasonably long time. He did not check up on us. AND I caught him texting numerous times. Glad to see you are paying attention to the patrons. So let me break it down for you when it comes to the food... 1. Miso soup- disgusting. I did not even know a BAD miso soup could exist considering the simplicity of the item. 2. Edamame- tasted stale and old. GROSS 3. Maneki roll- I asked the waiter what the OMG sauce was to which he described it to be "a type of sauce" Seriously? This place is overpriced for the quality of food. Quantity for the combo meals will fill you up but I've experienced better at lower or similar price. The service is forgettable; you'll likely see one or two employees standing around instead of proactively servicing their customers (eg filling They really skimp on the complimentary edamame but I guess I shouldn't complain about something free (but other places load it up). They do have sake nights but overall, this place can exist and continue to exist because it's a great location for locals and regulars in Union City. We ordered the Takoyaki, Korean Chicken Ramen, Beef Sukiyaki, Chicken Teriyaki bento box with Gyozo and California roll. The Takoyaki was too much flour, less octopus. Probably not ordering that again. The Korean Chicken Ramen was spicy good. The Beef Sukiyaki was much better tasting sweet. Details in the email I sent to Maneki today: I sent an email today and response was polite but a lot like the response I received in the restaurant: I was writing to advise your Management staff of how disappointed I was on Saturday, approximately 6pm. I had just celebrated the 1stBirthday of my grandson in Hayward. I grew up in Union City, attended Alvarado and James Logan, graduated 1992. While I was in the area, we figured we would have a family dinner before heading home to Tracy where I now reside. Googled a few local sushi places in Union City. We chose yours. I had my 3 teenage children and one 19 year old son with me, party of 7 total. I was excited for them to see areas I once walked the streets home from Alvarado to home, etc. They were getting Boba drinks next door to you, so I went and asked for table for 7. 4 adults, 3 teenagers (14, 15 and 16) My children are not 5 or 7 year old kids, they are 3 tall boys and our daughter. When I saw the table setup in the right hand corner as soon as you walk in, there were 2 tables pushed together, 3 chairs on each side and one on the end, back turned to entrance and not very far from neighboring table. Plus a divider behind the chairs that were facing out the window. I just felt it was a "compact" setup. We're all here to have a nice dinner and I felt we'd be elbow to elbow. We all normally get a bento box plus sushi. Myself I'd get a beer or two. Like anybody, do not like to feel "squished" together for dinner, my boys are all close to 6ft. So I requested to be moved to the other side where there was a bench along the wall and then chairs on opposite end. I know to accommodate a bigger party, all that needs to be done is push a few of those together and since it was in a more open area, not in a corner boxed in, it'd have a roomier feel. I used to work at a restaurant I my 20's so I know that it's what Is done to ACCOMMODATE a bigger party. I understand your establishment is not a large restaurant and I would imagine every table served counts and matters. In todays time it's understandable. However I really did not think my request would be declined. Server was very kind mannered, said she'd have to check, went and spoke with a Manager/Owner I assumed, she returned back and said "I am sorry we cannot move you, as those tables are for our smaller parties of two and it's Saturday night and it'll be busy". I did not find that answer acceptable. We're HERE to eat now, we're hungry, our intent was to eat good. Our business should matter as well. With that I just told my family, let's go somewhere else. We left and ended up in Hayward. Establishment was about the same size. They were steady, tables had to be wiped still, but they ACCOMODATED user right away, had someone wipe down the tables and was ready in about 3 minutes. Ironically, they had the same exact bench/wall setup and chairs on opposite ends. Food and service was excellent. Our final bill was approximately $150. I was hoping to have been able to enjoy dinner at your establishment as sushi in Tracy is not as good as sushi in the bay and I am a fan of smaller businesses and keeping their door open. Pandemic was upsetting to so many smaller businesses, especially in the food industry. I was disappointed to a point where I had to leave and find somewhere where my family can enjoy, feel relaxed and enjoy their food and atmosphere But it just seemed like we did not matter, like we would be just patrons interrupting more business of other patrons. It is about the dollar bill, but the actual patrons need to matter as well, as we all have HARD EARNED money in our bank accounts, some just barely getting by, so we want to reap the rewards of hard work, as we teach our children. Life is a cycle, you give us good service, good food, we give gratuities/our business, and return to become repeat customers. That goes A LOT further then turning a quick two top table. I just was just truly bothered by this, so much so to bother getting us all in the car and go back on Google to find another establishment. Hopefully a different system is in place in your guys near future to avoid loss of a would be return customer when we are in the area, which is often as a lot of my family still live in Hayward, Union City and Fremont. Their reply: Dear customer I know who you are. I mean I was there. Sorry about it but we are small place and we have only 3 small tables(for 1 or 2 person). You know that right? I've been here multiple times and finally decided to write a review. My family and i ate dinner here againlast Friday night and it was busy, we got there around 630pm and so glad we beat the rush and was able to get seated right away. This restaurant is quite small and it's located in the same plaza as RiteAid and Seafood city, right next to a barbershop and Popeye's chicken. I have tried a lot of their sushi rolls and most are just mediocre.. The only 2 rolls that i really liked were the Punk Rock and Finding Nemo rolls. Punk Rock roll has unagi, crab, cream cheese, avocado and some crunchy tempura crumbs. The Finding Nemo roll has spicy tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber and tobiko. I like to eat my sushi with unagi sauce. Their salmon and unagi tastes good and pretty fresh but when i tried their rolls that had Tuna... i never ordered stuff with tuna again on their menu because it did not taste fresh at all and the texture felt so rubbery.. =/ My parents always order bento boxes which they said are just OK. My bf's mom tried their ramen which was also just average.. All in all, this place is not bad nor is it the greatest. read more

Found Maneki Sushi via Yelp. Good call Yelpers! Great service and good food throughout the entire time. Even a friendly farewell when we left. Had a Combo Tempura appetizer with shrimp. It was finished quickly Yum. Was also served a host other things I am usually charged for at other places Edamame and Miso soup cam with the meal. Also good. Both gone before the table was cleared. My Nigiri combo also also came with a small salad. Nice and tasty. So were the rest of the items in my combo. The California roll was excellent. Chef's choice sushi were both varied and large. It was really more like a large piece of Sashimi laid way over both end of the rice. No problem with getting enough fish on Maneki's sushi portions. Every piece was wonderful to the eye and the mouth. My daughter has a roll that I cannot remember. That roll evaporated from her plate in no time. Not a small roll either. I give Maneki Sushi three stars tonight because of very slow service. It was very busy when we got there at 5:10 pm, and there was only one person seating customers and taking orders. That same person was also on the phone most of the time taking call-in orders. There was also only one person making sushi at the sushi bar. I wondered why they were understaffed on a busy Sunday night. We waited more than 30 minutes for our food, and the person who was serving the food looked like a cook who was just asked to help give out food to the customers. He looked confused and did not know which food goes to which table. I tried their poke salad for the first time and liked it. Let me start by saying, i never give alot of bad reviews. Because i know how businesses sometimes get hectic although its not a reason to give bad service. With that, service here is really bad, for some reason servers are always in a hurry. In a hurry for what? I have no idea, but they always are. Either in a hurry in taking your order or taking plates in front of you that you still working on without asking. Been here a few times, with those few times. As a former Sushi chef, this place was subpar. Even got food poisoning. "Grilled" salmon dish was raw and cold. Sushi was decent but hyped up typical "new" joint in town. Overpriced definitely for the food. 20% service fee as well or credit card charges in cases. Also, was very awkward the GM or owner or whoever was sitting at the bar was exchanging wax pens with the sushi chef/server whoever he was because the guy at the bar kept going to the cash register and ordering host/chefs what to do. (Typical for some GMs to do this as I've known some to do this in former profession but nonetheless Very unprofessional and disgusting.) I'm always unfortunately craving Japanese food when its 3-4 pm and about 99.8% of restaurants are closed until 5:30 pm.. but that's not a problem here since they don't close in the middle of the day! My go-to here is a chicken teriyaki bento with tempura and cali roll. Before the change in owners, the bento boxes were piled high but now there isn't as much, but it still tastes the same (delicious) and still gets me really full! Maneki continues to be the only restaurant I will order bentos from. I really don't recommend the "crunchy calamari." The breading was too hard and it pretty much felt like eating spiked pieces of rubber. I couldn't take it anymore after 2 pieces. It felt like an assault in my mouth and I had to stop! The waitresses really looked like they didn't want to be there, but they were consistent with refilling water and tea. Been a while since I have been here; it has been a few years (at least I think) since the last time I was here. Not my favorite sushi resturant, although it is my buddy's favorite resturant. When we wanted to meet up and hangout, we decided to go here. This place is more like 3.5 stars - what it is currently rated - so to be nice, I always round up. Came here on a Tuesday night. This place was not packed at all; a few tables were taken but everyone was seated right away. Probably one of the best times to go here. I did notice that they no longer give complimentary edamame. My bud and I both ordered bento boxes. He ordered teriyaki chicken, gyoza and tempura. I ordered teriyaki chicken, nigri and sashimi. Both were solid boxes, fair priced and the portions were good. Although I would have liked to have more. O'sushi does give bigger portions to their bento boxes. The nigri is only two pieces, O'sushi if four. Sashimi is four pieces, O'sushi is six. The cuts were similar. The fish also tasted pretty fresh. Not the best fish I've ever had either. The chicken is very good and moist. Correct amount of sauce. They do use a different miso dressing for the salad which comes along with the bento box. I personally like a lot of seaweed in my miso soup, but that's ok. Overall this place has improved since the last time I was here. Still not my favorite sushi place to go to. But a decent choice for someone if they so please. I must go to Maneki at least once a week. I go there after work and typically I am starving and I have skipped lunch because I was so busy. I order a bento or a sushi combo, it depends on my level of hunger. I find Maneki to be pretty decent for the price. I have found the fish to be fresh but I do agree with some people that they need to get their fish to rice portions straight. However, I find the prices to be pretty good for the amount of food you get. As for the service, yes, it could use improvement. They are not attentive at all, you have to flag them down, they drop off the food and never check in. I mainly come here because it is open all-day & it is on the way to my university. I always get the Bumble Bee because the shrimp inside the roll is so big and the salmon on top is usually good. DO NOT get the Lion King. I kid you not, it was smothered with sauces and soaking in oils!!! and on top of that, the fish was so slimily (was not fully cooked). You know you've just experienced sushi overload when you come out of the restaurant smelling like fish and soy sauce. My cat must have thought a was a huge filet of salmon walking through the front door of my house. That would explain his insanely friendly welcome with endless face-licking and purring...ick. We only ordered 4 rolls, but the owners hooked it up with samples of poki salad, rolls, and plenty of appetizer dishes! (We're thinking this was because they knew we were trying to organize an unofficial mini event to try the happy hr menu, but they took it out at the last minute.) A HUGE gratitude to them for showering us with complimentary tastes from their impressive menu. What we ordered: 1) Maneki Roll (spicy tuna, cucumber, almond topped w/ tuna, mango, capers, & tobiko) - Super huge, but not as spicy as I expected it to be. Regardless, still my favorite of the evening. Loved the hint of sweetness from the mango. 2) 1000 Bolt (shrimp tempura & cucumber surrounding a mound of white tuna bits in special sauce) - Doesn't sound like a lot of ingredients, but it was surely the largest portioned dish on the table. If you want a bang for your buck, this is the way to go. 3) Forrest Gump - I honestly don't remember what was in this one, but I'd pass. 4) Lion King Roll (crab & avocado topped w/ baked salmon & special sauce) - A must have at any sushi joint I visit! This wasn't the best I've ever had, but still satisfying. I felt that there was a bit too much rice and too little crab meat. If it were better balanced, I would've fallen head over heels. What they gave us: 1) Poki Salad - Delish! Tons of tuna, salmon, hamachi, & tobiko blanketing the bed of cucumber & seaweed. Awesome flavor with a slight kick in the sauce. Quite a generous sized salad. 2) Not sure what they were called, but it was basically smoked salmon, squid, carrot, and capers rolled up in cucumber. As Kathy D. expressed, it's a very refreshing appetizer, but more suitable for the summer season rather than winter. 3) California Crunch roll - Rice overload! I honestly don't think I'd order this one off the regular menu. Not because it wasn't satisfying, but there's just so many other creative and intriguing rolls to taste. 4) Tuna stuffed jalapenos - Oh man these had a kick! Tremendous flavor, but the spiciness crept up on all of us after the last bite. I experienced a slight case of numb tongue even after downing my glass of water (but please do understand I'm a weakling when it comes to spicy foods). I especially loved the side of squid that accompanied this small dish. Overall, I was very impressed with their quality of service, affordable prices, and sinfully tasteful menu. I especially adored how the rolls were organized by the type of fish you like, rather than just being randomly listed. The only issue I expressed to the owner was that they should include a full description of the ingredients they use in each roll (only because some contained nuts and I know of a few patrons who are allergic to nuts). They assured us that this was already something they've worked on and will present the new menus soon. I hope that Maneki continues to grow and becomes the new "it" spot of Union City. I honestly see a lot of potential in this establishment and I only wish them the best in the upcoming new year. Being only a 5 minute walk away, this could be dangerous... Maneki Sushi - You have got to be kidding me!!! 7 pieces of edamame?? Understand it's free, but this place is going down my list! - Japanese Near Me - Union City, California

The food here is okay but I've had better sushi. The service is here is a hit or miss and when it's a miss.. I mean nonexistent. I've had their bento boxes here and they were alright. I think if I continue to come here, I'd order their Crunch California roll the most. That one is actually really good. I have tried their Hawaiian Roll but wasn't too fond of the pineapple in the middle. Nice presentation tho. I like the organization of their menu. "Tuna is my Type".... "Hamachi is so yami"..... Haha. It's kinda corney but cute. The sushi chef (possibly the owner) is really friendly. Always greets their customers when they come in. I think one thing I don't really like is their tight space. Not a real spacious restaurant. It does get busy. One time I did a phone order they said 35-40 min!! Baaah! Sucks if you're super hungry. Would I eat here again?? Yes. It's just one of those restaurants that's just around the corner .. And hey... It's sushi. read more

The POKI SALAD gets 5 stars from me. I tried this place a couple months ago with my girlies and we all ordered one as an appetizer. It is AMAZING what a couple roasted almond slivers can do to a sashimi salad. I believe the almonds were candied as well, I could be wrong though. The spicy ponzu sauce had just the right amount of heat, and the sliced cucumbers had a nice cooling contrast. We ordered a Sashimi Platter which we were pleasantly surprised with. They give you thick slices of beautifully cut sashimi. Yummo! read more
