The drizzle was getting heavier and we'd walked about a mile and some change and decided to pop in for a quick snack. All I can tell you is that the number of offerings here was overwhelming. I tried so hard to be good. We ordered a smoked turkey sandwich served with cucumber, watercress, black pepper and mayo on pretzel bread. The dude behind the counter offered to heat the sandwich up but I didn't think my poor little heart and palate would have been able to take it. It was so delicious. My, oh my. Lovely little cafe bar on the ground floor where we had toasted panninis and drinks. I had a very tasty saprosata with aubergine, cheese and rocket. Dan had a veal Milanese which he also really liked. For me, the sandwiches are a big portion. Dan said they were average sized for him. Great value for the price. The cakes looked great, but sadly I was too full to try one today. We had an iced coffee and an OJ. Proper fresh orange juice full of bits. Super-rich desserts will tempt you as well, (I recommend the chocolate meringue cookies). However, you have to be very patient with the staff. Often, there might be 6 people behind the counter and only you and another customer in line, and STILL you will wait before anyone gets a clue to serve you. I normally went to bread and butter at 56th for lunch but this time decided to try Mangia. Food from buffet is not good at all. Had salmon and some salad. Salmon was under cooked and smelled raw wild rice was too hard and cheese was not fresh in the salad and they charge $6.50 per 1/2 lb which is way overpriced for the quality of food. I ordered Avocado Toast on Gluten Free Bread....When you order on seamless, it give you the option - upcharge of $1.00 to substiture with gluten free bread...Since i have a gluten allergy, i wrote in the comments - make sure its gluten free....when i received the order, it did not look like gluten free bread to me....so i called. Mangia isn't anything spectacular, but it's a solid lunch location if you're nearby. A girl friend of mine works around the corner on 5th; I was in town visiting and we decided to grab a quick lunch and catch up. I grazed past the self-serve salad/side dishes buffet and headed back towards the soups and sandwiches. The counter is a little awkward, and after I ordered I wasn't sure where to stand. My half turkey sandwich with cucumber, herb mayo and watercress on black bread hit the spot. It wasn't gigantic with stuffing falling out the back, although the bread was a little too firm for my taste. The broccoli puree soup with cheddar croutons really complemented the sandwich for a perfect combo. The soup is delicious and filling, but skip the "croutons" which are nothing more than tiny baguette slices that get all soggy in the soup. Not worth those extra calories. Total for a half of a sandwich, a medium cup of soup and a large Figi water was $12. Not bad for the city! Also, the eating area is quite cramped so I suggest taking it to go back to your office. The company that I work for has an account with this place. Occasionally, I'd order my lunch from here. I used to LOVE their white chocolate passion fruit cake. Then after a few months, it didn't taste the same. Like, maybe someone new was attempting to make it. It had become inedible. I used to like their salads. But, one day, I found what appeared to be a cockroach wing. I stopped ordering from them for about a year or so. But, my co-workers who'd continued to order from them had no bad experiences and they'd gotten an A grade with the NYS Dept. of Health, so I decided to give them another try. Our company uses Mangia before any other in the area when it comes to catering our office business lunches, breakfasts, etc. Which is very often, I might add. I haven't physically been here to eat, and by the price tag I know it's expensive, but I've had just about every sandwich they make, and their salads and sides are fresh and delicious. My favorite has been their tortellini pastas and the rosemary/bacon/cheese and potato side that they have. I could eat that for hours. Most of my experiences with Mangia are catered leftovers from corporate meetings: An assortment of cheeses (which are actually to die for), fruits (average), cookies (varies, some are insane, some taste like Pepperidge Farm), bagels (stale), scones (eh...better at Alice's Teacup), and pasta salads (really depends on the day - I've had gross unrecognizable ones and very tasty ones). I've also ordered the Salmon from Mangia a couple times (when it was Fish a la Minute) and while the preparation was good (sauce, sides, etc), the fish was a kinda funny and small cut and DRY. Easy peasy Chuck E Cheesey for phone ordering, they always get the order right, the packaging is good enough to simply unwrap/open and present, they're timely, the delivery personnel are nice and professional, LOVE the orecchiette pasta salad...just love them for catering! But, the other week, I had to go into the store proper. Love the way it's set up. Really nice, modern space. Did not like the ordering process. I am not a quite guy, but I had to repeat both of the orders I placed multiple times, and the one sandwich was made with the wrong meat (proper protein - incorrect type), even after the multiple explanations of the order. It also took forever to be made, and it was just a grilled wrap. At check out, I was with another person from the office. Her single order was put in a nice, presentable sturdy brown paper bag with a handle. It was quite obvious that we were together. But my orders, which I needed to be wrung up separately, were put in standard, thinner paper bags, no handles, and with less customer service than my co-worker received. At this price tag (you'll be hard pressed to get out of here with a filling meal for under $10)? Methinks not. The catering and quality of product are both strong enough to keep this at a solid 3-star review. Stopped in for a quick coffee and a bite and I was so so impressed with the level of service, attention to detail for the quality of the food and how beautiful the place was, especially for a takeout breakfast/lunch spot. Multiple staff greeted me politely while I made my way around, I was directed to the bathrooms even before it was clear I was going to buy something, and others made sure I found the way. I saw crusty pieces of baguettes being drizzled with olive oils, mounds of kale salad being brought out of the kitchen. My breakfast burrito was perfect. Chewy, griddled tortilla, scrambled egg/cheese still fluffy and light, with big pieces of bell peppers and onions falling out and warmed up just at the right temperature. So, I went in and ordered my lox bagel and continued the half mile walk to work. Had the bagel when I got to work and it was awful! I won't just call it awful without qualifying that statement - the bake itself was stale. It was hard and slightly chewy at the same time, you know that stale bread feel. The creme cheese looked slightly old, and the lox was just tasteless. How and when is lox ever tasteless? I also asked for extra capers, and instead received no capers at all. No wonder why it was such a well priced "value" lox bagel. And in top of that, everyone came across as just so cold and unwelcoming; I don't even recall the folks working there ever smiling even. I typically eat Mangia as catered, but I sometimes walk over to the brick-and-mortar to pick up some cubicle grub. They've got a large selection of lunch foods at numerous stations: made-to-order sandwiches, salads, and pizzas, hot/cold foods buffet bar (good roasted chicken), desserts, soups, hot entrees, pre-made sandwiches/wraps, etc. All the food is higher quality than your typical NY deli and the prices reflect it (e.g., sandwiches will run you $8-11). I usually head straight to the back where the made-to-order sandwich station is located. I've tried most of the sandwiches on the menu and my favorites are the Italian hero and French ham & aged cheddar. And pick up some of the desserts, especially these little chocolate brownie/cookie things which are pretty awesome. The space has a rustic, old-world, and kinda upscale feel to it. There is seating available in the front of space as well as on the second floor where there's a section where a waitstaff can serve you (I think, since I've never tried it).
