NEW FAVE RESTAURANT ALERT! Not sure why it took me so long to get here, but now that I have tasted the pure deliciousness that is Mangiafoglie, I will go back as often as I can. After a short wait (we could have sat immediately at the counter in front of the wood fired pizza oven, but chose to wait for a table), we were seated by a very friendly server. The ambiance is beautiful - comfortable, clean, tastefully appointed. And the food! Oh my gosh the food. We started with a special appetizer, which was pâté and caviar on crusty bread - divine! Then we split the salchicha & pesto pizza with cherry tomatoes. It was a true flavor explosion! And the pizza crust is probably the best I've ever had. We also split the gnocchi with pine nuts which was tangy and inventive - I'm a gnocchi snob, and this was some fantastic gnocchi. Finally, we had the olive oil cake - unreal!!! Served warm, with hints of cardamom, with walnuts, blueberries, and creamy ice cream. And the red wine (an Italian import) was particularly crisp and refreshing, paired perfectly with the food. Oh, and did I mention this is all plant-based?!? Do NOT let this deter you if you're not vegan or vegetarian - I promise you won't notice or care. My meat-loving husband had ZERO complaints. Although I hesitate to recommend it too highly because I'm selfish and don't want to have to wait for a table, I nevertheless give it my highest recommendation! Our first visit here a month ago was fantastic. We had an incredible waiter who explained the menu in detail (even describing certain dishes as "mute" for milder flavors). We ordered the meatballs, and they were unforgettable steaming hot, perfectly textured, with sauce that was spot-on and hearty, brick-oven bread that was fluffy inside and toasted just right. We literally talked about it all the way home. We also tried a pasta dish, which wasn't really our style, but overall the experience was great. Fast forward to our second visit, and it was a complete 180. We called on the way since GPS said we'd arrive at 8:35 p.m. The person who answered assured us that wasn't too late. My daughter went in first and ordered the meatballs with extra bread, but the waitress greeted her with attitude, snapping that they close at 9. When I came in and asked about a pizza I'd seen in a review, I showed her a photo. She identified which one it was, and when I asked what vegan cheese they used, she cut me off sharply with, "We make our own." I asked what it was made of, and she snapped, "Coconut oil." As a vegan chef, I was already skeptical that's not even a proper cheese base. The tone alone should have been a red flag. When the meatballs arrived, they were lukewarm, not hot and fresh like before. The bread was even worse: all end pieces, stale, chewy, and tough, basically the throwaway scraps you'd give out at the end of the night. Nothing like the fluffy, toasted bread we had on our first visit. Then came the pizza. And tell me if I'm crazy, but the build was completely off: crust, sauce, meat, and then a thick layer of cheese on top. This wasn't a deep dish, so it made no sense, it just felt careless, like "throw something together and serve it." The final straw was when we were packing up the meatballs to reheat at home, and the waitress just grabbed the pizza off the table without asking. We had only each taken one bite, and she never asked if we wanted it wrapped up, if we were done, or if there was an issue. We thought maybe she was taking it to box it, but nope, it just disappeared. The diabolical part is it still showed up on the bill. I tried this Italian Vegan restaurant because I heard of the Truffle Capuccino on their menu and combined it with lunch time. First of all, for lunch they only have sandwiches. I found mine somewhat flavorless and the aubergine could have been more cooked to be more juicy. The Ruccola Salad was great. The Capuccino was well prepared just not my taste as the Truffle is already combined with syrup and i dont like my coffee beverages sweetened. Manta Della Carne Let me start by saying, this place will forever be my Spot. My wife & I wanted to try the newest Italian restaurant on 4th st. We'd passed this numerous times, and decided to try it. We got to the restaurant, and my wife stepped out of the car only to trip & fall on the high curb. This place is one of the nicest open air restaurants that I've been to. There were people sitting outside, saw her fall & simply watched us struggle. The owner & cashier came running to help. I was so thankful. They then brought out water & kept asking if she was ok. The crazy thing is, they were more upset than we were, and they didn't have to do anything. Mangia Foglie, you beauty! A 100% plant-based Italian restaurant -- YES PLEASE! Chef Paul (one of our beloved Ubuntu regulars ) and his wife poured their hearts into this beautiful and cozy spot, and it shows. Lambrusco to start (refreshing and happy-hour-perfect), warm olives with homemade ciabatta, and the most mind-blowing polpette -- I still can't believe they're meatless! Riley, our sweet server? Total star. Made me feel like a queen and ran that dining room like a boss. A small heads-up for new guests: the restaurant can be a little tricky to spot at first -- I almost walked into the Peruvian place next door before realizing this was the plant-based paradise I was looking for! Wasn't worth the price considering half of it was just tomatoes, no protein, no side of bread nothing-- just look at how the basil leaf alone takes up the plate. We had heard so much about Mangiafoglie and oh my god, it exceeded our expectations. The food is plate licking good!! Everything is made in house and from the scratch including their sauces. If you read their menu, everything is of high quality, for example their gnocchi is made from purple potatoes, not just the regular potatoes and their pizza base looked brownish than the regular whitish base, so I am assuming that it was not made up of refined flour. One of the best pizzas that we ever had in life. Highly recommend the "CAPRICCIOSA". The flavors were on spot. Very polite and friendly staff. They have high chair too. They have plates that are over 100 years old, if you look at the back of the plates, it kind of tells you a story leading up to your imagination. I thought it was so cool. This place has a nice, positive vibe. They were packed and it was just the mid-week today, not the weekend! We had to wait just a little bit before getting seated. You could expect a slight delay in the food arrival if they are jam-packed. But be assured that the food is not going to disappoint you at all. They work like a coffee shop in the morning hours. We had ordered a lot of things and absolutely loved their lemon cake, Focaccia and the Marzipan latte. Hence, we had to surely go back there for dinner. I was both super excited and just a tiny bit apprehensive to give this place a try. I was excited because I had been here a couple of times to enjoy my morning coffee and the employees are always so friendly, even asking if they could give my fur child a treat. Plus, they're a neighborhood business and living in the area, I find it important to support business owners who invest in our community. I was a little apprehensive because I find meat products to be important in creating a delicious dish. Well the food was really good. I ordered the mushroom risotto and was pleased with my selection. However, I did think that using an animal based broth, would have taken this dish to the next level. That being said, I will definitely go back, especially on a dinner date with one of my plant based friends. Such a great new addition to Long Beach! I have now been twice for dinner, and several times for the coffee and pastries (8 AM to 3 PM), and Dinner service (after 5:30 PM). I thoroughly enjoyed each visit! The pastries they have during coffee hours are simply delicious. So Italian authentic you wouldn't even know they're plant based! The food during dinner service was simply delicious! We had the Pizza Montanara (pan fried pizza), and the Caesar salad to start. Both are so unique, I had never tasted anything like it! The pizza's dough is sooo light and tasty before you know it it's gone! The romaine leaves in the Cesar salad are roasted, the dressing has a lovely tang thanks to all the capers, and the croutons are nicely roasted! We also had the Lasagna, and the Agnolotti pasta. Both dishes absolutely delicious! For dessert we took the Olive oil cake with vanilla ice cream and it was mind blowing! I can't recommend this place enough, and I can't wait to come back once they include oven pizzas to the menu. The service both times has been great.
