Omg did I just finish that burrito? Holy cow. Sometimes my eating abilities scare me. I got the wet carne asada burrito (green sauce) and every bite was AMAZING and to think that it was just $5 makes it taste that much better. Mmmm! Growing up in San Jose, La Costa has always been one of my go-to spots for Mexican food. Every time I go here, there is always a line and it is always so lively. I always order the tacos, burritos and/or cocktails here. I never order anything else, maybe because I ordered the quesadilla once and I didn't like it. However, I've noticed that their cocktail isn't consistent. One time I ordered it, they had raw shrimp. Another time, they will have cooked shrimp. Whatever, they're both good to me. Also, I'm not a burrito person. But, I really like their burritos! In their super burritos, I like how they use pieces of avocado. Mmmmm. They do also have their own hot sauce, but I prefer the tapatio. You can never go wrong with tapatio... Their service is quick! Their food is good and inexpensive! My first experience at this place was really great! There was no line, and the employee was really nice taking our orders. Service was super quick, but then again, there was no line. However, a line grew as I was eating with my boyfriend, but the wait was still reasonable! The food itself was really good! 4.5 stars! I came here around 2pm and there were a handful of people already eating. There were 5 people waiting for their food before I got to order. I ordered a carne asada burrito ($3.75) and a coke ($1.00) which was pretty cheap (paid $5.19 total). My brother had the same thing except he got a super burrito. I didn't know they had super burritos since the menu only had Burritos with size indication. He paid 50 cents more, and I just assumed there was more meat since our burritos looked the same size. I bit into my burrito and wasn't disappointed! The meat and everything else all complemented very nicely. I even added some Tapatio hot sauce. BTW, Tapatio hot sauce (bottles on almost every table) wasn't hot to me so try it! For a burrito that's almost the same size as the average super burrito and under $4, I thought it was a very good deal. The seating was limited and outside. The area was surrounded by a tent-like structure so dress appropriately (weather might be cold depending on when you go). I was at communication hill and craving tacos. I looked up on Yelp and this place came up 2 miles away. This place is in the middle of a parking in a strip mall. Very unassuming but delicious tacos! They have only outside seating. You order and pay at the counter, get your number and grab a table as you wait for the order. I didn't see a tip jar nor an option to add tip in the bill which is kinda sad because for the food they serve, they'd be tipped very well. The order came in within 5mins or ordering. With all the coronavirus scare, it was good to see that they had a huge sanitizer dispenser at the counter. The outside seating made it a bit chilly. The hot tacos with a little hot sauce helped with dealing with the cold. My friend and I got 5 tacos among us. We tried carnitas, Al Pastor, Carne asada, cabeza and buche. Ordered them with everything which was chopped onion, salsa, cilantro, caramelized onions and side of radish slices and piece of lime. The pastor was ok, not the best I've had. Carne asada was a different beast altogether. Tender meat, deliciously flavored, this was my favorite. Liked their cabeza and buche as well. They have a restroom at the back, so don't hesitate to ask for the keys of you need to tinker. Good place to grab tacos if you're close to Communication hill. Since they're known for their seafood, I'll try their shrimp tacos next time. Most importantly they're cash only place. Came here last night for some tacos after the gym and I'm so happy I did! Apple maps will guide you wrong and the sign says la costa on it. I ended up turning into a KFC but it's just across the street from it. It's kind of set up like a drive-in and has only outdoor seating. I thought they had seafood tacos but they don't so I just got chicken tacos with sour cream. Make sure to bring cash because this place does not take credit cards! For us, 6 tacos came out to about $13! We got our food pretty quickly and they even threw in a free horchata which was really nice. It was honestly soooo good. They warm the tortilla as well so it gives you a little bit of crunch. I really liked the salsa they added to the taco and the chicken was seasoned very well. All the ingredients are just perfectly combined together even though I have a bunch of other Mexican restaurants or stood closer to me. My friend and I were craving some Mexican food and found this affordable spot! The venue is a little store in the middle of a parking lot. It's surrounded by little trees, creating a very lively and somewhat excluded atmosphere. There is plenty of parking and seating located around the venue. If there is a line, the wait will go by quick and you'll have your food within minutes. (This is based on my past experiences with this place, so please don't hold me liable if the wait time is longer) But most cases, the max time you'll be waiting won't exceed 30 minutes! I ordered the Burrito Mojado (wet burrito) with Al Pastor (marinated pork cooked on a vertical rotisserie). I was very satisfied with the burrito!! For $6, the burrito was a decent size and the sauce that enveloped the burrito was very rich and cheesy, which was to my liking! However, I'm sure their regular burritos are just as good! Al pastor is my go-to option for meat now, but they have a large variety of meats to satisfy every customer. Likewise, there is also a vegetarian option, which was definitely a plus! A variety of sauces can be found scattered around the venue and I believe napkins are available on the tables! However, you would have to ask the workers for utensils. At times, it can also get very windy because the whole venue is virtually outdoor and very close to the road. But this won't ruin your experience because the food is delicious and affordable! Where's the tongue! I recently had a double-meat burrito that had mostly carnitas (roast pork) and barely any lengua (tongue). The carnitas was dry and lacked some flavor. The minority pieces of lengua however were tender and juicy. Burritos here are huge, heavy, and only $3.75. They're so heavy, I thought they put a brick in my bag. The intimidating weight comes from tons of meat, sour cream, salsa, beans, and rice...all wrapped in a hefty tortilla. I'm not a big fan of sour cream and beans, so my burrito had more meat than usual. I ordered the asada (grilled steak) burrito during my first visit, and I wasn't impressed with how it was marinated. I was looking for a more grilled flavor. I prefer the tacos more than burritos here. Their meaty tacos are a buck and a quarter, scolding hot and messy...just the way I like em. I had a taco de cabeza (head of cow), which was a little salty for my taste buds. If you order this, expect to have your hands bathed with cow head innards and lime, and drinking some cool horchata to help equalize the saltiness and piquancy of the salsa, onions and cilantro. I should've ordered a taco de lengua on my recent visit...to get more tongue action. I always see a line of people at this location, and it goes fairly quick. I love La Costa's Alum Rock location, but I don't get a chance to go too often since it's so far. I figured why not settle for their Monterey location? The carne asada tacos are cheap but do not compensate on quality. Onions, cilantro, and a spicy salsa with carne asada on a small corn tortilla are just so tasty! I must warn you, their salsa has a slight kick to it. Make sure you can handle a little bit of spicy or else you won't like it. I suggest ordering four tacos if you're trying to make a meal of it. The shrimp ceviche tostada is cheap so you don't get as much shrimp as you get salsa. It's still a nice thing to order on a hot day. The ceviche is very refreshing with a zesty taste. The ceviche is chunky and fresh but nothing out of the ordinary. don't expect it to fill you up. I love coming here, the service is great and very accommodating. I've been coming to La Costa for many years, and it's always been a solid choice to satisfy my taco cravings. I usually order around 4-5 tacos (mix & match) and one of the ceviches. The meats are always well cooked and packed with good flavor. The tortillas are on the smaller side, but they hold their shape, and they also don't become soggy which is awesome! I wish they would serve tripas as one of their meat options because it is my favorite type of meat, but unfortunately, it's not on their menu. They also seemed to be out of lengua for the longest time, but I'm glad it's finally back.
