I heard that sometimes they sell out and close the shop early, but thankfully they still had bagels and gold standard baguettes ($6) left. We got there around 1:30 on a Friday afternoon. Service was friendly and welcoming. There were only a few people in line, also there to pick up baguettes. Glad we were able to snag one before they were gone! I also got an everything bagel and a cinnamon raisin bagel ($2.95/each). The bagels were a bit pricey for the size. Inside, you'll see sheet pans of baked goods being made fresh! I think all the sweet pastry was gone by the time we got there. Sadly, we didn't see any biscottis, spumoni or rainbow cookies. When we got home, we sliced up half of the baguette and toasted in the oven. It had a nice sourdough flavor (not too sour). Best eaten that day! After a few days, it can get hard. But if you can't finish it all, it makes great croutons for salad! That's what we did. It was crispy and very yummy! The bagels were also good and had a nice chew. Though the size of the bagel isn't quite like the ones you'd see in New York. But the texture was close! He hand rolls hundreds of organic, naturally leavened sourdough bagels and sets up shop Saturday mornings at 9AM until he runs out - which doesn't take long. There's a small, devoted cult of bagel people in this city who line up for what they swear is the best bagel in san francisco. You can't get a bagel sandwich here. It's not that kind of place. It's more like the neighborhood baker showing up with a basket of something special for the community. The bagels are naturally leavened and sourdough-based, so they're crustier, chewier, and more rustic than NY bagels. It's a different philosophy. The cream cheeses are made in house, and some of them are unique - like the horseradish and shallot -with freshly grated horseradish, minced shallot, and parsely - I loved this one. But my favorite thing to get here is called a Dog Log. It's an beef hot dog...wrapped in a bagel. Hell yeah! The one's a "pumperknickel everything bagel, wrapped around all all beef hot dog." There's a lovely parklet outfront where you can eat your bagels amongst dog walkers and coffee drinkers, but most people get a dozen to go, with cream cheese and lox on the side. Alex started selling Chickendog Bagels out of Pizzahacker during the pandemic before moving to Avedano's in Bernal. It's not a big business. And he's not really growing the enterprise. Alex just wants to make high quality bagels, surf, read, and balance his life. Yet every time I post a bagel review, somebody in the comments says "Chicken dog bagels are the best".

The cinnamon bun here was also one of the better ones I have had in a very long time so that was a nice treat. Lots of other great looking pastries, sandwiches, cookies, etc, so will have to come back try some other things. It's a small unassuming place from the outside but easy enough to find. Parking on Cortland I find can be a little difficult at times but usually I can find a spot on one of the side roads fairly easily during the day. WIll definitely be back.
