The ultimate comfort food. I love Marugame Udon! The best thing about this location is that there are rarely lines. I think the longest I've waited was maybe 15min. Other locations, especially their Hawaii one usually has super long lines. My go-to is the classic beef udon. I add an egg. I always say yes to the scallions. I used to get the udon just like that until I discovered their spice bomb. That was a game changer. Japanese food has never been spicy to me no matter where I go but this spice bomb has a niceeeeeee kick. It's flavorful and spicy. I also like to add ginger and togarashi. The other thing I always order is their calamansi drink. Soooo refreshing and delicious. They also have a section for tempura. I've tried a couple here but I'm usually pretty full off of my bowl so can only eat 1-2 pieces. The tempura mushrooms are really good and I'll eat any sweet potato or kabocha. We were so excited to come here when we found out it had opened! The first time we tried this was in Oahu and we were in love! Despite being in SoCal and having it at three different locations, I am super happy this location is closer! The food is excellent. We had the tonkotsu (with fireball) and nikutama. The tonkotsu was delicious, the broth was neither light nor thick but the tempura did make it thicker than the base. ADD the tempura though. The fireball was not that spicy to me. There was a little kick to it but it was enjoyable in the broth! I recommend it if you was a little spice. The nikutama is one of the favorites. We got that last time we were in Hawaii! We also ordered the matcha latte which I probably wouldn't get again. It just didn't wow me, and I drink matcha almost every day. Although, $5 for a 12 ounce isn't that bad. I would definitely get the calamansi-aide again. It was light and refreshing with our udon bowl! We also ordered a few tempuras. They were ok and overly priced. The had chicken in the squid area, and we purchased it thinking it was squid. We were super disappointed. Chipotle meets .. Udon? Marugame udon is one of those .. order your noodles, pick your extras off on the side, then pay like you do at chipotle. Quick and efficient. The udon itself is .. fine. Nice, bouncy, chew. Cooked al dente, but. I thought lacked a bit of salt in the noodle because it tasted very plain to me. The broth was also ... fine. It's clean, but didn't have much depth to it so everything felt just a tad shallow. Tempura was just okay, nothing super flaky and the dipping sauces seemed like it came out of a jar that you get from Mitsuwa or local Japanese stores. Overall, it's a decent place if you're craving udon and don't want to venture into downtown LA, but Marugame Monzo is definitely a couple classes higher than Marugame Udon. read more

The place is relatively clean, except for the tray return area where there is quite a bit of food debris splashed around the area. The line tends to build up because of the bottleneck around the udon ordering area. I had to repeat my order four times for the staff to hear correctly, probably because it was so loud. Otherwise, things move relatively quickly. The BK udon option is pretty good for those preferring a flavorful udon that, at the same time, isn't too heavy. This place is not worth it.... First of all, the noodles are precooked and left out for an extended period of time. By the time they cook the noodles, the noodles are overcooked and soggy. The quality of the soup and beef is so salty and comparable to frozen food quality. Lastly, the service was not very good. The girl serving us seemed uninterested. When we were paying at the cash register, she was on her phone the entire time and handed us the receipt while STILL looking at her phone. Her eyes were glued to her phone the ENTIRE time she was at the register. Overall, for $30 this place was very disappointing. Love that there's now a location in the 626 so that I can get Marugame whenever I crave it :) When you arrive, you order your udon with one of the employees (they also have rice bowls but I have personally never tried them). Once it's prepared, you move down the line to their tempura station, and add those items to you order if you wish. Their Nikutama udon is my go-to and is therefore my recommendation if you are visiting for the first time. I love the flavor and their generous portions of beef and noodles. This is probably going to sound controversial but...I just don't get the hype. For years I had observed the Disneyland-esque lines of tourists at the Waikiki location and while curious, never felt the draw to line up for udon when there were so many other food choices to try while on vacation in Hawaii. So when Marugame Udon finally opened at location in the SGV, I was excited to visit and not have to use up a vacation meal to try it. The restaurant is more fast-casual style with a small menu done cafeteria style where you order your hand crafted Sanuki-style udon in the beginning, move down a line and choose from various tempura items at the end. The menu offers a few different broth choices such as Nikutama, Tan-tan, Tonkotsu, Curry and Dash (traditional). I went with the Nikutama which comes with sweet beef and soft boiled egg and tried a couple of tempura. You can also get it Sanuki-style where they add tempura flakes on top of your udon. Do note that while the initial bowl you get is decently priced at $12.75, it does start to add up once you add any tempura as each piece starts at $2.25 and goes up from there. I enjoyed the bouncy texture of the handmade udon but beyond that, everything is just okay. The broth is tasty but also kind of salty and the batter for the tempura was soggy and nothing like the light, crispy batter you typically expect in any Japanese restaurant. Also, the added tempura flakes on top make for a nice initial crunch but gets soggy quickly, so then you're eating wet tempura flakes alongside your noodles. While it's not particularly off-putting, it also doesn't help make it better either. I'd come back only if I'm really craving handmade udon, am too lazy to drive to Little Tokyo and there's no long line. read more

This is a solid place if you're in the mood and craving some rich dashi umami-filled sauce on a nice warm bed of fresh udon noodles. I got the Nikutama which is essentially a sweet well-seasoned beef that is put onto a fresh handful of udon noodles, with a powerful dashi sauce that is rich and filled with umami. Personally, I really only go to visit this place once I'm craving it since I do think that the Nikutama is more on the heavier side, due to its rich umami flavor. I like to get my bowls the "Sanuki Way" which is basically adding all of their dry toppings to your bowl (scallion and tempura flakes. Sometimes when I'm craving some more kick with this bowl, I even opt to get the "Gekikara Fireball" for an additional $0.50 as it provides a nice subtle heat to your dish. The overall seating arrangement for this location is quite big and reminds me of a "food-court" vibe. This is because you wait in line, order your main entree, pick any appetizers you want to add (shrimp tempura, chicken tempura, chicken katsu, etc), pay at the cashier, find a table and get your own utensils/drinks, then return your dishes to the kitchen once you finish. For that reason, this place is pretty simplistic and delicious. They have employees coming in every few minutes to clean the tables, which is also really good!! read more

The line might be long, especially during lunch and dinner times, but the service has always been adequate. The employees there smile and greet me all the time. The restaurant is also usually clean. The food was near tasteless, the broth lacking flavor as well. The Matcha Green Tea Latte was good, but the one size you get is almost like a children's small size. The ambiance is between restaurant and fast food place. The restrooms were unkept. There was no toilet seating placements (needed to be restocked). I ordered the BK Udon bowl and they prepared it right away, definitely intrigued by this "fast food" noodle set-up they have going on. There were plenty of available seats inside but the place seemed a little dirty and the restroom was a disaster unfortunately, which is a huge turn-off. This store is located right outside the mall next to Cheesecake Factory. I've tried the one in Glendale but I think this place taste a lot better. The line moves pretty quick so there isn't a wait. They do leave the entrance open so heat travels into the store - which isn't smart considering this weather.
