This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and so many friends recommended Massawa. The atmosphere is beautiful during dinner time; candles and dark wood adorn the restaurant. My friend and I shared beef sambusas and the shrimp tebsi to fit within our budget. After being served water, it took over 30 minutes for our appetizer to arrive (on a weeknight). The main plates come with injera (a sourdough flatbread) to eat it with, which was an interesting spongy texture and paired well with the more flavorful lentils, tomatoes, and shrimp. I love everything about Massawa. Their wooden QR codes menus are really cute. I want one just because. I had the Massawa mule which was great in flavor, but also strong in alcohol content. Their salmon tebsi is so delicious. Soft and flavorful, plus the two sides, collard greens and spiced brown lentils were amazing along with the fresh injera. Do not get utensils, just eat it authentically with the injera and you'll get the true culture and taste out of the food. I came here twice before deciding to write this review. The first time was okay, nothing spectacular and I ordered the same dish twice. The service leaves MUCH to be desired. The second time I came here, I was with a group of friends. One of my friends is a rather muscular man and he enjoys wearing tight fitting shirts. The waitress at some point during our time here, thought it was okay to massage his arms and feel his muscles. He was highly uncomfortable and offended by this. Additionally, the waitress messed up our order and brought my friend and myself the wrong dish. She also spilled water on my friend and splashed the table. I ordered the vegetable platter with a substitute of one of the vegetable dishes with the red lentils. I did not receive the substitution and in fact was given the standard vegetarian plate. The food itself was okay, not the best Ethiopian or the worst I've ever had. We were given ample injera, which was much appreciated. Massawa is good! Really good! I have tried the Vegan Sampler ($23) and the Salmon Tebsi ($24). I wouldn't recommend the Vegan Sampler but then again I probably just picked the wrong selections for my palette. BUT The Salmon Tebsi was by far my favorite. Very flavorful! It was a fair portion of Salmon for the price. The Salmon meal was accompanied by 2 vegetarian/vegan sides. You are typically able to chose which sides you'd like, However, because I'm not well-versed in Ethiopian cuisine, I entrusted the waiter with any and all of my selections. Which was the right choice because they were good! Each side brought a completely new and complementary dimension to the meal. I like to think that I have a pretty diverse palette but I couldn't identify a single ingredient lol! I enjoyed the gastronomic adventure. Oh and let me not forget about the Injera bread. You get A LOT of it. It's wonderfully spongey porous bread that soaks up all of the food. If you're following, then you may have already realized that between the protein, various sides and lots of Injera bread, the overall portions are pretty huge. Which means leftovers! Lastly, the prices for most dishes are in the mid-$20s but again the portions are huge and the ingredients used to cook Ethiopian food are specialized, imported and down-right expensive which justify the price. Tuesday, December 14, 2021 around 5:30ish, party of 2. We were warmly greeted, had our covid vaxx info and id checked, then were lead to a cozy table for 2. The menu and payment was done by scanning a TOAST icon on the table. We ordered ordered: Chicken Sambusas, very fresh, crispy, and tasty. We ordered 2 entrees ( lamb and chicken) which each comes with 2 veggie( double collards, red lentils, and cabbage) options on a shared platter. Meats were flavorful and tender. Collards were perfect as far as taste, texture, and presentation. Red lentils were tender with some texture to them...pack with flavor. Cabbage was nice...it just needed one more spice to bring out the flavor because the texture was perfect. We needed a few more rolls of injera which was made available for us. The amount of food was way more than we expected which explains the container of leftovers I brought home. Water, extra napkins, and wet wipes were supplied without having to ask. Staff and service was wonderful, courteous, friendly, and informative. We will definitely make this a place to revisit soon. read more

This place has been on my list of need-to-try for awhile and I'm so glad I did! A friend and I shared their vegan sampler for 2, which had a nice array of veggies and plenty of injera (the Ethiopian sour fermented flatbread). The flavors were fantastic but it left a bit to be desired in quantity (I'm unsure if we were missing a component) for the price of $22 each. My first experience dining at a Ethiopian/ Eritrean restaurant did not disappoint . The entire staff was very friendly and helpful. Inside was neat and tidy with a moderate amount of indoor seating, full bar, and ample covered outdoor seating for warmer months. The menu could be accessed using a QR code and you could pay the bill directly from the website in which the menu was on...pretty cool ! As a quick lunch break I enjoyed two chicken sambusas which could be made spicy or mild, I chose the mild option. Not sure the name of the sauces served on the side but I preferred the red as it was slightly sweeter and provided a perfect tang to pair with the Sambusa as I dunked it in. For my main meal I ordered Salmon Tebsi with a side of potato stew and collard greens. As the plate was put in front of me I realized they did not provide untensils and figured it was traditional to eat with your hands. I swiftly looked around and picked up how to enjoy this cuisine. Using bread they provide the object is to dip and or grab the contents and enjoy it as what I'd like to call a mini burrito. It was very exciting enjoying new cuisine and would love to come back to try more items on the menu. The food was delicious! With an African American background collard greens is almost seen as holy , so when I saw it as a side at the restaurant I was very apprehensive, but to my surprise it was cooked perfectly. pretty good! i ordered the shiro, which came with a side of alecha (potato stew), and injera -- as recommended by many folks online. i asked for chili sauce on the side since alecha is not very spicy in general but i WAS in the mood for something hearty. i think it got the job done for the most part! in terms of service, things were okay. they expect you to order online through a website that they have barcoded on the little wooden cubes on the tables, which was interesting. very contemporary choice. the waiting staff was also not very attentive until the end of our meal. additionally, i noticed some lipstick stains (not from us) on one of the glasses that the waiters were pouring water into (i noticed a bit too late unfortunately). it kind of grossed me out knowing that they didn't bother washing the glass well enough to remove lipstick from previous customers and made me have doubts about the restaurant's cleanliness. i do, however, want to hope this is an uncommon occurrence... the ambience is nice. the restaurant interior is very beautiful and it has a lot of cultural Ethiopian charm (mesob!!). i was a bit displeased with the dim lighting (i just like being able to see my food) but maybe they do this to set a certain mood? idk. they also have candles on the tables which is cute for sure. i think, although the taste of the food was good, i am a bit disappointed. it was far too expensive for the portion size. it was a little bit unreasonable. i don't think i will visit again but it was nice trying this place out. read more

Also had mixed sambusa-- lentil one was better but by far the most flavorful thing I had was the red sauce and pink vinegar that came on the side of those. I'm not sure if it's just an off time or what but this meal was definitely very disappointing and lacking. For reference this was a DoorDash delivery and the distance that it traveled was 5minutes. I was certainly looking forward to come here because it has been awhile since the last time I have had African cuisine. I actually cannot remember what exactly I had but I do remember it was tasty and delicious. I was pretty full and satisfied after my meal. The lunch special runs until 4pm so definitely try it if you get a chance! The service was not so great. I came a little after 1pm and I think my server must had a long day already. She looked tired and ujn-enthused. I was kind of hoping she would stick around and introduce the menu to me. Instead, she just gave me the menu and left. Luckily my friends have been here before so they were able to give me some instructions to understand the menu but they don't know everything either. That was disappointing but totally understandable since some days just don't go as well as others. I would give this place 3 stars based on my own experience here.
