Last night we had the opportunity to have dinner with our adult children and grandchildren before a theater event. We had made reservations for our party of 8. On our way into town, we received a phone call to confirm, and we were told "our table was ready." Nice way to start our family evening. Upon our arrival, we were greeted warmly and taken to a beautifully set table. The pizza was a huge hit. We learned about "real" pizza, and ordered 4 of them. Each was unique and delicious in its own way. The highlight of the evening was when all 3 grandsons were invited to the pizza bar to watch their dessert pizza be prepared. They came back to the table with samples of dough, rolling it like the chefs were doing. We all agreed we had a "fabulous" family evening. The entire menu looks outstanding & I went with a group of friends & we were able to get a verity of different dishes, loved them all! The one thing that we all agreed on was the Pizza. Spectacular. I am still thinking about this meal after returning to my hotel room. Spectacular seems overwrought, but it is the only word that I can come back to. This restaurant was an afterthought. We were looking for dinner yesterday actually and ignored this because we thought it was too expensive. Italian places often have "that" taste which isn't unique from any other Italian place. Tonight, however, our first plan didn't pan out and I sorta had a taste for pasta so we decided to give it a shot. Thankfully we did! The server was fantastic to start with. He had a great knowledge of the menu and even though the appetizer that we requested was 'sold out' he had a recommendation to follow it, which turned out to be excellent. It was, by the way, the Stuffed Jerusalem Artichoke. Highly recommend it. Additionally, he sold me on the special of the day which was lobster ravioli. Trust me, I know what you're thinking - it's the same frozen lobster ravioli that every Italian place serves. No way. There were big chunks of fresh lobster. The pasta was clearly fresh made. The sauce was exquisite. Nothing bad to say. Not a bit. I can't even say that there wasn't enough, it was a perfectly sized entree! My husband chose off the menu and had a pasta dish with the wild boar. I did not recognize the pasta, but it was amazing. I went with my husband and one year old at around 10:00 pm for dinner after a long day of sightseeing. Not only did they make us feel welcome, they made us feel taken care of. From helping us stow the stroller to adoring our daughter, from the host to the manager, these people were fantastic at customer service. This was a trendy place that did not make a family with a child feel distasteful, and try to seat us by the kitchen, as has happened to us a few times now. The food was excellent. I had A' Zupp e Cozze Fort' - mussels sauteed in olive oil, garlic and finished with fresh pressed chili oil; a side of sauteed broccoli rabe (a bit too bitter); and Pappardelle con Ragu' di Cinghiale - braised wild boar and fresh pasta (done *perfectly*). The atmosphere was dark and pleasant. Acoustics were good. Pretty rustic, with a ton of little alcoves and nooks for intimate dining for two or a large party. The only drawback was that there isn't a diaper changing station. But the elevator (much nicer for a baby in a stroller than stairs) more than makes up for it! Wonderful! read more

When I see that a place like Mast is "Zagat Rated" it tells me that Zagat just completely sucks. Where do I start on how bad this place is? My wife and I popped in there at 6:40 on a Saturday evening as we needed a quick bite before heading to the Shubert for the John Prine show at 8pm. The upstairs restaurant was busy so we headed downstairs to sit at the bar and order a quick bite. The bartender was horrible at service. He was yelling over our heads to the bus boys and servers since he needed supplies. He gave more attention to the two people who came in AFTER us and served them their drinks first. Once we told him we were kind of in a rush he put all our food in at once (my suggestion) and then proceeded to ignore us until I told him we needed the check. Now for the food. Atrocious. I have an issue with modern restaurants. They put so much salt on their food I'm going to stroke out by the time I'm 50. This place is no different. Ordered a salad that was basically inedible as the "chef" had tossed about 3lbs of salt on top of it. I could feel the salt crunching in my mouth as I ate it. Does an arugula salad with shaved parmesan cheese on top and a salty dressing really need salt on top?? Nope. Our entrees were no better. My wifes pasta dish was bland and my dish with broccoli rabe and sausage was pretty tasteless and watery. Again, they over salted the rabe and the sausage was in huge chunks and tasted terrible. I guess if you're a tourist this counts as good Boston food but if you really want a good Italian meal pay for the Uber into Cambridge and go to Giuila. read more

I'm giving it 3 stars for the ambiance & the near oil/vinegar shakers on the table. I was very excited to eat here, but left disappointed. I chose the Chitarrine cacio e pepe. It was too tough and completely flavorless, which is surprising because it has ground peppercorn, parmigano reggiano and pecorino romano. I had to put a lot of salt and pepper on it for flavor. I didn't want to say anything because my boss took us there and she got the same thing as me. At the end, she said she was pretty disappointed with hers, too. It looked pretty though! read more

Review based SOLELY on hostess and seating (not on food and not on cocktails). This place came highly recommended by friends. Friend and I had reservations, but the greating/waiting area is awkward and tiny, and the hostess was not around when we got there. The hostess was also not the nicest person and looked confused and overwhelmed. Maybe she is new there. But the seating experience was way below expectation, to the extend that the waiter was doing the hostess's job. We originally had a reservation for 4, but it ended up being just two of us. We asked if we could be seated at a two people table, we were told its reserved. Thus, we were seated at a four people table that was pulled a few inches apart and eventually another two people were seated extremely close. The table was also right by a door that was very drafty. We very a bit dissappointed in these first 10 minutes of service and left to a different restaurant. I will try this place again sometime, in hopes of getting beyond a rude hostess. read more

I was pleasantly delighted with the food but the service was a little slow. My husband and I split a pizza and a pasta. After the pasta was delivered to the table, the waiter came over to tell us the pizza guy lost the order so we needed to order the pizza again. The pizza came out after we had already finished the pasta. We weren't too upset about it as we were spitting anyway, but the pizza still came really late. That said, though, I thought the food was pretty good! We got the gnochetti with boar meat ragu and the Mast pizza. The pizza had a lot of ricotta on it (perfect for me but my husband wasn't a huge fan). We both loved the prosciutto on it though! And the gnochetti's ragu sauce was delicious. I had never had gnochetti before and it's not really what I was expecting. I thought it would just be small gnocchi but it was more like a miniature shell pasta. Still good though. I hosted a private cocktail party here a few weeks ago and it was fantastic. We had the private space in the "basement". Our group ended up around 50 and everyone LOVED MAST'. It was put together relatively last minute and our event coordinator, Leah, was instrumental in making the night a success. She was detail oriented from the get-go. Also present the night of, Leah ensured that her staff were on the ball. And they were too - they did a phenomenal job in making sure that food was constantly coming out hot and fresh. The pizza was great. People also loved the arancini and lamb skewers. This particular group can drink and towards the end of the party, servers walked the floor with waters. I can't say that my glass was ever empty from arrival on (maybe not a good thing, I was perhaps a little ill the next morning). We had such a great time! I wouldn't hesitate at all to host another party with MAST'. Our CMO declared it one of the best functions the company has held (and she's quite discerning, a.k.a. picky). read more

MAST' was recommended by the concierge at the Omni Parker House where we were staying around the corner. On a Sunday night, it was completely empty minus four people at the bar. For the few people in the restaurant the service was a bit lackluster, but not completely oblivious. I had pizza, which was okay. I have had a lot of original Neapolitan pizza, so that wasn't the issue with it. White I ordered one of the recommended pizza, I was a bit taken back by the no substitutions for the pizzas. There was one pizza that looked interested, but I refuse to eat olives and that comment on the menu put me off. My husband had the cannelloni, while the sauce was delicious, the meat was a bit grainy. I greatly enjoyed my tiramisus, but my husband's lava cake was a bit over baked so the center was solid and thus not "lava-y". read more

This is the best Italian I've ever had. I mean that. My husband and I are on a trip in Boston, and we went to MAST' because the hotel restaurant (Parker House Restaurant) was closed on Sundays. And I have to say this- the best, absolutely the best choice we made for meals during this trip. The atmosphere is very casual, which was nice (meaning you didn't have to get dressed up- a plus!)- but the food made it feel like we were at a 5-star restaurant. We were originally going to get the Fiori di Zucca appetizer, though unfortunately they were out; the Stuffed Jerusalem Artichoke was a fantastic substitute for this. The stuffed artichoke- stuffed with goat cheese, wrapped in a fine prosciutto- came out deliciously. Even the bread they delivered with the meal was amazing. My husband had some lobster pasta that was on special (though that didn't stop me from getting a taste!), but I had the Pappardelle con ragu di Cinghiale- wild boar ragout over pasta. The meat was succulent, the pasta was thick and hearty, and the dish certainly filled me up. I don't know how they seasoned the boar, but it was tasty, the meat was tender, and I had no problem devouring the dish- though it didn't leave much room for dessert. The portions? Filling and delicious. The service? Great- they didn't let my martini glass get empty before offering me another. The price is definitely higher here than your neighborhood Italian joint (and I think the three dollar signs on yelp is right- this is something that you need to be ready to spend for), but I don't regret spending what we did for the food. Not for an instant. This is the best, hands down, Italian restaurant I have been to. I love MAST', and I'm recommending it to ANYONE that I know that comes to Boston! My regret is that I didn't come to this restaurant sooner- the pizzas looked filling and they had a great variety. I came here on Friday with a group of friends. The wines is reasonably priced which is always a plus! All the pasta is made in house and was pretty good. The aranicini are pretty small a d probably not worth it, but the burrata was very creamy and delicious! my friends got pizza and loved them! The only weird thing was we called and asked how long the wait was and were told 20 minutes, we the looked on open table and were able to get and immediate reservation. The atmosphere at Mast' is great! From the moment you walk in and see the huge pizza oven standing front and center. It's a clean and spacious space and I notice some new detail each time I go. Even the ceiling in the restroom is beautiful. The food is great. The first time I went we ordered a table full of pizza and I got to try a good portion of the pizza menu. They were all simply delicious. I have too say the prosciutto was my favorite but I'm still dying to try the wild mushroom. So I will be back! The second time I tried a pasta dish which was also very good but the star here is the pizza. They also have great apps. I recommend the calamari. They had an app to pay and we decided to do that because our waiter was inattentive and as we were leaving they thought we didn't pay. Wagyu my a**. Ordered the wagyu burger and it was so dry that I HAD to keep drinking water to get it down (was starving). Waygu is fatty and that's why it's so expensive - and RARELY GROUND INTO HAMBURGERS- i.e. I should have known. This burger was gross and dry. There should have been SOME grease or fat on the burger.....NOPE. Also the citrus for the drinks was rotting in the container. My drink was VERY strong, I was not prepared for it to have such a bite, not intolerable, but WOW. Our server was very slow in getting our drink orders throughout the night though, and more then once we had to ask another employee if they had seen her or could help us with our drinks. It was shocking that drinks, from ordering to receiving was taking about 20 minutes. We ordered a plethora of appetizers and pizzas to share, the food was amazing and I loved the rustic feel and taste of the pizza. The Marinara pizza was so good, and a great option for me since I am unable to have the mozzarella used. It is a good place, not AMAZING, but worth trying out. read more

The menu looks amazing on paper and again has potential but whoever is expediting in the kitchen needs to take more pride in their work. We ordered a smoked meat and cheese board. When it came out it just had meat. When we asked about the cheese, they literally just have us a huge block of cheese. That's just lazy. I agree it's a new restaurant that has to work out the kinks. While we overlooked service issues, the food fell flat. If you can't take pride in your food and execute it well, you will not succeed. Found on Yelp and read some reviews and decided to try Mast with some friends. The front of house was essentially missing and someone in street clothes starting talking to us which was confusing. Apparently he was a manager, at least an employee, and contributed to getting us seated. While confusing, they were friendly and didn't have any issues. The service was not spectacular by any means. He wasn't particularly friendly and, not his fault, he wasn't around often because he had tables both upstairs and downstairs. Everything else aside, the reason for the title is that I tried to order a simple 'spaghetti and meatballs' since the restaurant is listed as Italian (I understand it may not be considered that traditional of a meal) and I was told I had to stick to the menu which shocked me. They could combine an appetizer meatballs with some noodles and red sauce but it would be more expensive so I passed. My dish was alright, nothing special. I don't plan on returning unless with a group that wants to go. read more

Moving on... I order Chix parm as my dinner... portion was fine but the "homemade" pasta was gummy and chewy, the Chix was flavorless and under seasoned. I am just kicking myself because I was in the North End and decided to try Mast because it was around the corner from my hotel... I called earlier in the morning to ask if they had dollar oysters on Monday (as written on Eater) and the owner and kitchen confirmed that they did. We got there for dinner and they said no to dollar oysters even when I had called ahead. The restaurant was then understaffed, it took about 3 hours to finish dinner because drinks didn't appear for 30 minutes, our boxed up food was forgotten about after the owner took it... the table next to us had to order their drinks 3 times with two different waitresses. Later when we asked to split the bill, the waitress said no she couldn't do it. The cherry on top was that everyone apologized profusely when we were leaving (they were apologizing to every table because the service was so terrible) yet nothing comped so we ended up paying over $100 for average food and terrible service. read more

Very good service. We went there for dinner and were seated right away. I got a Caesar salad and a margarita pizza. The food arrived incredibly quickly and it was delicious. It's a small restaurant with big atmosphere and the food is amazing. Homemade pasta and sauce dishes, awesome pizza. Eddie the bartender makes a mean drink. We had two of his specialities, Pistachio Martini and Nutella Martini! The staff was amazing friendly and the customer service was good, you have to consider the fact that everyone is short handed with staff right now and with that understanding and the right frame of mind that this is not an instant gratification restaurant you will have a wonder experience. This was a bizarre and unfortunate dining experience. My friend and I both ordered the parppardelle with mushrooms, but what arrived was a linguine bolognese. We objected, saying this isn't what we ordered, and asked to see the menu again to clarify that what we ordered was indeed parppardelle with mushrooms. We were very nice about it, but she just said, "Oh this is what you ordered, see there's mushrooms in the sauce." There were no mushrooms, and it was a red bolognese sauce, with meat (I'm a vegetarian). Instead of apologizing and taking the food away, or bringing us a menu so we can clarify, the waitress left the food on the table and walked away NEVER TO RETURN. Eventually a different waiter came, but it was a LONG wait, with us wondering if we were going to have to eat what we were given or if we would ever get a chance to get the right order. Finally, the right order was brought by yet a different person, but no one ever came back to check on us or see if we wanted more drinks. Finally we got one comped 2nd drink (but only for one of us who had the mistaken meal, oddly). The original waitress finally came back and barely spoke to us, handing us the bill. When we tried to question her, she seemed upset and said we were angry at her so she couldn't be our waitress anymore (we never acted angry, just confused). She said that the manager or owner was making her pay for the mistaken meals and that's why she couldn't comp us anything else because she'd have to pay for it! If true, this is an appalling practice. Also appalling is the lack of apology and the fact that she left and never came back! So bizarre and disturbing. read more

Overall, a good experience for the most part. My diavolo pizza was excellent as were most of the pizzas others at my table ordered. The service was great and the patio was lovely on a summer evening. More points for having Lunch as their Maine Beer Co. draft beer. There was one major problem with a pizza with eggplant: the eggplant had a awful taste. My southern Italian friend (an expert on eggplant!) and another Italian both couldn't eat it because of the taste. One described the eggplant as having a "fermented" taste. The server gladly took it back and had another (different) pizza made very quickly. I was disappointed with my Aperol spritz. It was the most watered down one I have ever had anywhere and for a trendy cocktail bar price. It wasn't just mine that was weak either. I guess since spritzes are all the rage now, they aren't all going be excellent. Maybe it's because the drink is from northern Italy and Mast is a southern Italian place. :-) My biggest complaint was the inconsistency in food and drink quality. (I had been warned about this well before this visit.) Also I was expecting high prices being downtown Boston and all that, but I went for pizza, not a gourmet meal. I hate to say that the hassle of going into the city just wasn't worth the money I spent, even though I really wanted to love the place as much as I did the first time soon after it opened. 5 stars for pizza, 1 star for steak, 1 star for credit card fraud, 2 stars total. This place was recommended by my work colleague who visited us from Italy for 6 months in 2015. He explored restaurants in the city and this is the only place he found which serves a real Italian pizza. We ate pizza there a few times and it was delicious! The last time we went there, we ordered steak but we didn't like it at all! The meat was oily and tough with greasy onion rings on the side. The check was $77.04, and we left $10 tip. A few days later, we discovered that our credit card was charged $92.04, meaning they charged extra $5! Seriously? If 13% tip is not enough for you, why don't you try serving better food instead of making fraudulent credit card transactions? SUMMARY: Their pizza is fantastic. The steak was bad. The paper thin crust was soggy and all 3 different pizzas we ordered, funghi, margherita and quattro formaggi were bland. We ate them because we were very hungry by the time we got them. The service was not great either. The place was maybe half full but we didn't see our server for several minutes when we got there. We only saw her 3 times the entire time and wasn't all that helpful then.
