I wanted to love this place, I really did. While we were reviewing Italian places in Boston this one caught our eye so we decided to set a reservation and check it out. The place was busy, which we took to be a good sign. Any restaurant that's worth it will be busy on a Saturday evening. We waited our 10 minutes to be sat and were led into the basement which frankly, felt like a dungeon. At first, I hated being down there but eventually I warmed up to it and learned to enjoy it. The non-existent lighting gave to a more mellow ambiance and kept conversations lower throughout the basement seating area. At first this too annoyed me, as we were there to have a good time, but I adjusted. After being sat we waited, and waited for someone to take our order. By the time they arrived at our table we ordered drinks and dinner at the same time to try and make it easier on our server. Instead, he just seemed annoyed with our order. We tried to spin it as, "Hey man, we're all servers, we're trying to be helpful. We will be low maintenance just keep the drinks coming." He honestly couldn't have been bothered, which was unfortunate. The food is the only redeeming quality to this place. We split three dishes between the three of us girls and it was the perfect amount of food. All of the dishes were not only cooked to perfection but seasoned deliciously. After we received our food we again, didn't see our server for lengthy periods of time as our drinks went unfilled and empty plates sat ready to be taken. We definitely would have liked to beef up our bar tab, but our server simply didn't seem interested in our money. Fine by us, we grabbed our tabs at the next possible chance and went to a restaurant down the street to end our night. While on our way out we realized that we were the only table that had not received the bread and oils at the beginning of our meal as literally every other table around us had. I'm not sure what we did to our server, but it sure seemed like he wanted nothing to do with us, it was disappointing to say the least. Won't be back. read more

Went here for a friends bday party. We sat at the outside patio which I have mixed feelings about. It's nice to sit outside when the weather's nice but the view is either tall buildings or a back road where you can see ambulances riding through. The service was really great and the food was just okay. We told the waiter we were sharing and was interested in what was the best salad. We ordered the caprese salad which was good but sortof wished that he told us it wasn't shareable between 8 girls. The wild mushroom pizza was good, I would recommend that. We order two plates of pasta and it was not the best. Tasted undercooked. The highlight was Nutella pizza which was a great substitute for a birthday cake. Very delicious. Today I went to MAST' for lunch. I got their Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, which was delicious. It came with a basil leaf on top, and it had the perfect amount of sauce, basil, and mozzarella. Every table gets fresh warm bread upon ordering. The bread came with good quality olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette. The service was fast, and all of the staff were very friendly. They have a wood fired pizza oven, which both smelt good and had some amazing looking pizzas coming out of it. I didn't ask, but I think that they cook their bread in the pizza oven. If I were to go back, I would definitely get the pizza. The chairs and decorations makes it feel like a bar, but everyone was dressed professionally for Friday lunch. It is the heart of downtown and near the state house, so very convenient if you're in that area. read more

I really had high hopes but this is solely on the food and drink. Service was wonderful from walking in to walking out. I sat at the bar to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere. Ordered an espresso martini in which was not made the way the menu says. It was creamy and didn't have a full shot of vodka in it. I watched the bartender put 4 liquors in this and the espresso. No beans either. My food was flavorless. I ordered the short rib pasta. The sauce was gummy and bland. I had to ask for Parm to get some salt. The ribs did fall of the bone but also flavorless. We came to MAST' because of an Italian friend's recommendation, but I thought it was just alright. Scusa! My friend and I ordered the Scamorza appetizer and the Saporita pizza - items recommended by both the Italian friend and our server. The appetizer was delicious! The cheeeeeeese was super soft and gooey - great for spreading on the accompanying grilled bread. Plus the prosciutto was very generous and you really can't go wrong with the classic pairing. The dish also came with some grilled eggplants that were too thinly sliced and too oily for my taste, but I did appreciate the variety in textures + colors. The pizza was underwhelming though. I was expecting more from a place that smelled and looked so authentic, but the pizza was pretty bland and meagerly topped with sausages and broccoli rabe. There were a couple of slices with nothing but cheese on them! And the crust itself was little more than warmed bread. I personally appreciate a bit of a crunch and toast to my crust, but the crust here was surprisingly soft and disatisfying. I ended up with a plate full of crust because I couldn't bring myself to waste valuable stomach space eating it. A glass of wine and gnocchi entree ran about $30. They served complimentary sliced bread with a plate of balsamic and olive oil. Both the balsamic and olive oil tasted like it was good quality. The gnocchi were edible, but not something I would order again. They were hard and bland. I prefer it when they are more pillowy, and these were like hard little rocks . The sauce was very basic and I thought that It needed some additional seasoning. The dish had a good amount of melted mozzarella and fresh tomatoes. The ambiance was odd. I counted 8 employees and only 3 customers. While the service was good, you felt like the staff were watching you eat every bite. read more

I've been here before with friends and experienced it with crowds and in solitude and it's good for both! Come here for the authenticity if nothing else... During this visit, I had mussels which can be rubbery at other places but here the sauce combined with juicy scallops...delicious! For my main, I had an off menu pasta dish of bolognese that was perfecto! More than likely, the rest of the pasta dishes are delicious as I watched another diner enjoy his lasagna. I think our server was new, as he seemed confused when we ordered (struggled to identify the dish on his tablet, ordered the wrong wine). The food tasted very authentic and good. I ordered the Italian braised rib dish. I would suggest that if a dish is said to be a rib dish, have more than two ribs in it. Still, the pasta with it and sauce was very tasty. This place is great! Food is great, everyone was so nice to. I walked in like a drowned rat (not prepared for a rainy night) but everyone treated me with respect. Fabio (the "pizza" maker/oven handler) was very accommodating. (I asked for extra saucex2) and personable. The "pizza" came out so fast too - which was great because I was starving! The lady who welcomed people at the door way was also extremely friendly. I came in super annoyed that my full day interview didn't feed me all day, but I left happy and full. While visiting Boston and staying at the Kimpton Nine Zero hotel (which recommends this restaurant) I ate at the restaurant once and ordered take out once. Both times the food was very mediocre. The pasta was very good however the sauce was missing something. The pizza I ordered to be delivered was very cold and took a long time. The restaurant is next door! This might be the best panini I've ever had. It's slightly less than traditional in that instead of bread it's pizza dough, but it is the freshest and most delicious - moist, bouncy, and stayed dry on the outside despite the melty middle. Fresh basil, real parm, mozzarella, tomato sauce - it was superb and I will be visiting again. They really took a hit during covid and have only one server who runs around probably doing the work of 3-4 people. So there's a bit of a lag with food service. But they're friendly and super hardworking, and the price is right. $12.00 for an eggplant parm panini with fries. For comparison, Sam LaGrassa across the street charged $17.50 for a tuna sandwich. read more

Mast is the only restaurant in Boston certified by Vera Pizza Napoletana (aka VPN). What does this mean? It guarantees incredibly delicious pizza, made in a style exactly like you'd get in Naples. I've been to roughly 10 VPN certified restaurants, from British Columbia to New Zealand, and Mast's pizza is as extraordinary as the rest of of them. Now, if your conception of an ideal pizza is New York or Chicago style, then Mast may surprise you - BUT, please try it. This is what IMO the best pizza on the planet tastes like. read more

3.5 stars for tasty wood-fired Neapolitan pies and well-made craft cocktails. 4 stars for service, 3.5 cuisine, 3 value. Enjoyed our prosciutto pie with fresh ricotta, beautifully made - flavorful but not too heavy, with a perfectly chewy, airy crust. Calamari was lightly breaded, the cherry peppers added a nice kick. Cartoccio Napolitano - Neapolitan street food trio with panzarotti (potato croquette), scagliozzi (fried polenta), and zeppole (fried dough). Fried polenta was outstanding - some of the best I've ever had. Potato croquettes were decent, but didn't care for the fried dough, a bit bland. Nice ambiance upstairs, downstairs perfect for private parties. Love that the cocktail list features Negroni variations - my San Gennaro with rye was balanced and well-made.
