Located at the Promenade near Nordstrom on the second floor of the Santa Anita Mall. The line was very long when I got there, but it didn't take too long to place my order. Service was good, and I can hear them call out the order number even it was ready. I got the Sakura Foam Matcha Latte and Mont Blanc Softserve. The Sakura Foam Matcha Latte was very good, especially with the floral taste added. The Mont Blanc Softserve was fun to try for one time since it's so pricey and interesting to see with the spaghetti form. read more

Not sure why the reviews are lower than expected. The price is fair and though there was a line we didn't wait too long. The Mont Blanc matcha strawberry parfait was delicious- with matcha and vanilla swirl. The Mont Blanc part is definitely the most impressive part and the strawberry, mochi, and soft serve part along with the Mont Blanc created an amazing textural combination. I guess if people are looking to be wowed by the matcha it's not mind blowing but the Mont Blanc soft serve is a definite must get. read more

I've been here a few times and the staff are always friendly. I've never tried their drinks and only come for the strawberry daifuku. Such a yummy treat! Fresh strawberry with sweetened bean paste and covered with chewy Mochi. We have tried the chocolate strawberry mochi and it is a bit too sweet for my preference so we always stick to the traditional daifuku. Today we tried the cream brulee crepe and it was ok. It had the crunchy sugar on top, but the edges of the crepe were burnt and left a weird after taste when we ate it. The drinks looked good and maybe next time, I will give it a try.Oddly, I am not a matcha latte drinker but do love other products made with matcha. One downside is this spot has very limited seating and no trash cans within the area or in front of their shop so we had to carry our trash until we found one. read more

Decided to check this place out while in the mall. Heard about the viral "matcha spaghetti" so wanted to give it a try. Lines can get pretty long as it's still in their soft opening era but it goes by pretty fast. I decided to try their Mont Blanc and daifuku. 1. Mont Blanc- 7/10 I was expecting the spaghetti to also be matcha flavored but found out later that Mont Blanc is a chestnut, nutty cream which makes more sense. I did really like the subtle texture differences between the Mont Blanc and the soft serve itself. We got the matcha and Hokkaido milk swirl and that tasted really good. The matcha wasn't too bitter and it balanced out the sweetness of the Hokkaido milk. I wish the matcha was a bit more earthy but overall it was still good! I did enjoy the presentation of the staff pumping out the spaghetti; it was fun to watch! 2. Strawberry daifuku- 5/10 Mochi was not soft enough as parts of it were still hard. Strawberry was nice though and i liked the white bean mochi paste inside. Total came out to be almost $16 which is pretty expensive. I don't think it's worth it for that price, especially the strawberry daifuku. I'd rather get a similar mochi dessert at Tokyo Central again. read more

Was walking around the mall and came across this matcha shop. There was a line so I assumed it must be popular. A lot of people ordering their drinks and desserts so decided to give it a shot. Got a matcha latte no adjustments and matcha strawberry daifuku. Friends got their banana crepe and soft serve so I got try that. Matcha latte was okay, matcha felt a little old? It had the taste but also wasn't as prominent as other places. Failure was nice, strawberry was sweet! Not a lot of red bean but I wasn't upset about it. Banana crepe was fine, the matcha crepe base didn't really taste like matcha though. It was okay but nothing memorable. Their soft serve is probably my favorite of the things I tried. Matcha is sweet and strong and milk was a good classic. Overall okay matcha place. Would recommend their matcha softserve and daifuku for a quick sweet treat. read more

TLDR: Busy spot with quality matcha and drinks, good soft serve and crepe texture, but the custard needs work, not creamy at all. Expect long lines and a bit of a wait. Matcha REN is packed on a Friday night! It took about 15-20 minutes just to order and another 10-15 minutes to get our desserts. With only one register running, the line moves slowly, so some extra help during peak hours would make a big difference. The space has a clean, modern vibe that matches the matcha theme, but being at the mall and the crowd makes it a bit hectic. The matcha soft serve has a strong, authentic flavor, slightly bitter but clearly made with quality matcha. Next time I'd go for the matcha and milk swirl for a more balanced taste. The crème brûlée crepe has an amazing chewy texture with the rice flour, and adding strawberries was a nice touch. Unfortunately, the custard filling was gelatinous instead of creamy, which threw it off so I'd rate it 2.5/5. The strawberry dango looked cute but didn't seem worth the price. Overall, I'd skip the crepes until they modify their custard recipe and would come back to try their matcha drinks which looks like they I use ceremonial grade matcha. read more

Strawberry mochi -- so fresh and juicy (perhaps a little too sweet with the sugar inside, but still very good!) I've been wanting to try Matcha Ren for so long, so I was excited to see them open at The Shops at Santa Anita. A new matcha spot is always a welcome addition! They are located on the second floor above Din Tai Fung, turn left into the food court section and walk all the way down. I definitely didn't expect the line to be so long as it stretched all the way to Easweet. The wait was about 30 minutes before I got to order. Shoutout to the staff for being patient and professional despite how busy it's been. After ordering, they give you a number and call it when your items are ready. I ordered the Strawberry Mont Blanc Parfait and the Strawberry Daifuku. For the parfait, you can choose your soft serve base to be either matcha or a matcha-and-milk swirl. Honestly, the matcha Mont Blanc itself wasn't what I expected. The texture and taste were more like white bean paste, and I couldn't really taste any matcha. However, the soft serve was delicious! I'd recommend just getting the matcha soft serve if you're looking for a strong matcha flavor (and you'll save a few dollars too). The parfait also had cereal, a couple pieces of dango, and jellies inside. I really enjoyed the daifuku. It tasted fresh, not overly sweet, and the tartness of the strawberry paired nicely with the mochi and white bean paste. There was even a subtle floral note to the flavor, which I liked. Plus, they include a string with instructions to cut your mochi in half which is a cute and thoughtful touch. There isn't a designated seating area, as it's mostly takeout, but there are a few tables around the mall where you can sit and enjoy your sweets. read more

I loved Matcha Ren when it first opened in the Mitsuwa in Costa Mesa. I love mont blanc and matcha, and matcha mont blanc is truly a match made in heaven. I went to the Matcha Ren in Arts District as well. So when I found out that a Matcha Ren had opened up in the Arcadia mall, I knew I had to give it a try. It's a small stand near Din Tai Fung. There was a line on a Friday evening but the line moved quickly. The staff answered all the questions that were asked and the orders were served quickly. My wife and I ended up sharing a soft serve matcha mont blanc. As always, mont blanc is a chestnut cream, of course this one with matcha flavor. The chestnut cream was served on top of soft serve matcha ice cream. I like that the matcha ice cream was sweet but had a slight bitter after taste. I like when matcha has just a hint of bitterness to it. The mont blanc cream itself was quite good also. read more

Strawberry wrapped matcha Mochi: 5/5 The tartness of the fruit balances the sweetness of the mochi. I highly recommend. Strawberry match latte: 3/5 The matcha itself was good but the strawberry tasted really sweet and artificial Service: 1/5 I'm being generous. I suggest management reinvest in training and require employees to wear name tags. We waited a long time and observed many instances of unacceptable behavior from the staff the day after Christmas at about 1pm. Two people working and the girl in the front clearly did not want to be there. She would not acknowledge guests that came to the counter. She got orders wrong multiple times and never once apologized when guests had to wait for orders to remade. She gave out orders without utensils. No spoons for soft serve or multiple straws for one drink. When calling out numbers for pick up, you could not hear her unless you were standing in front of her so orders just sat with no pick up. I heard one man ask about his order since others after him got their orders. She told him the machine broke but never bothered to inform him and just let him wait for something that was not coming. All the guest were making eye contact and commenting on the bad service. I hope management makes adjustments. read more

This place took over the hainan chicken place next to din tai fung. I only got the mochi. They ran out of everything but the mochi with chocolate at 3 pm. They were making more but they said they are taking any out. I would not get the chocolate mochi with strawberry. The mochi was soft but it was mostly chocolate filling. The chocolate filling was tasteless and dry. It didn't taste like chocolate. The strawberry was disappointing beyond recognition. It was more white than red. I understand it is not strawberry season but if someone is paying 5 bucks for a small pastry, you would be selective of your ingredients. read more

Saw this place on social media and was excited to try when it opened. I went after the craze died down to avoid a long wait. The presentation looked exactly as it did on photos and social media. I preferred the matcha soft serve over the Hokkaido. Hokkaido was a bit too sweet for me. The Mont Blanc was good, nice and soft. Slight sweetness to it on its own. My son enjoyed it; couldn't keep him away. Haha. I think for my next visit, I will stick to just to matcha soft serve because I think I just liked that the best for my own preference. read more

Cool new little matcha spot at the mall. There was a huge line at 3 Cats so tried this spot out as their line was shorter. The line went through quickly and their service was great. The barrista was trying to encourage me to try their matcha bean paste on ice cream, what they specialize in but was craving a more fruity drink. The other is more dessert and sweet. I also tried their blueberry matcha but did not take pictures. Like the strawberry more, other blueberry matcha drinks have more natural blue berry instead of jam like syrup at this place. Their strawberry mochi was super good, might try the chocolate one next time. The drinks were good but a little over sweet but they also serve you less drink if you ask for less ice. Maybe that is why my drink tasted rich. Might try more drinks too and choco mochi but not in a super rush. read more

Always looking for a new matcha spot nearby and this one just opened in the Santa Anita mall just passed Noodle Street as you walk out towards the outside of the Nordstrom exit. They had a short line but the drinks and desserts were being pumped out really quickly. You get to see them whisk the matcha, make the lattes, and swirl the matcha noodle looking desserts just behind a glass window. My family tried out a few items, the matcha soft serve with rice cakes, the blueberry matcha latte, and the strawberry matcha latte. All of the drinks were good, not overly sweet, although a little grainy with a clear umami grassy flavor but it was good. I also tried a daifuku for the first time and the fresh strawberry wrapped in mochi and bean paste was surprisingly good. The ripe strawberry was definitely the best part. Overall it's a nice place for a matcha, but it's not as smooth as I'd prefer. read more

I was hunting for matcha drinks/desserts while I was in town and happened across Matcha Ren so we made the drive to try it out. It's located near Din Tai Fung and has a small storefront. It took awhile for my order to be prepared. It seems pretty inefficient since the guy taking orders was also responsible for whisking the matcha. However, he was receiving a lot of questions and orders that he had to keep stopping. There were other workers in the back of Matcha Ren who were preparing the base of the drinks/desserts but they kept piling up one by one. We shared a matcha mont blanc since it seemed like an interesting choice and a matcha ice cream float. The "noodley" part of the matcha mont blanc was SO sweet I winced and I'm certain I made a weird face. I dug around it to eat the soft serve underneath afterwards. The matcha ice cream float was decent but there was so much ice. Overall, I came in with high expectations but it was a slight letdown. First time visiting this new place, a small stand on the 2nd floor between Nordstrom & the promenade. It reminded me of Japan, you can see them making everything by hand. We enjoyed the strawberry daifuku (strawberry wrapped in mochi) it even came with a string & directions explaining how to cut it in half. We also enjoyed the matcha & milk swirl soft serve. Both were super delicious. It does take time to make each item so there is a little wait, just need to be patient. Can't wait to return to try more items on the menu. Matcha Ren is having a viral moment lately so the lines can get pretty long especially on the weekends. We ordered the matcha ice cream and the strawberry matcha daifuku. They were okay. Even if the line wasn't long I probably won't be ordering this again since you can get items similar to these elsewhere. read more

Pricy and deceptive! I stopped by Matcha Ren after wandering around the mall to burn off my dinner. It's my first time trying them out, but didn't opt for their matcha stuff since it was night and I value my sleep. Ended up getting the hojicha latte instead. Hojicha is decent here, but they didn't ask to adjust for sweetness levels. My drink was good, but it was a splurge. They offer dairy replacements, but keep in mind that they don't tell you how much they charge. Oat milk was a 1$ upcharge, so I ended up paying 8$ for a 16 oz cup before tip. I know times are tough and COL has gone up, but yeesh. Would be nice to see how much they charge for the other milk replacements. Not returning. read more

Went on a Thursday around 4 PM. There was no line, but about four other people were waiting for their orders. I was excited to check this place out since I've been wanting to try the Costa Mesa location but never got the chance. We ordered a blueberry matcha and a mango matcha. Unfortunately, the service was very slow, it took about 20 minutes to get our drinks. At one point, there were three people working on a single drink, which didn't make much sense. Both matcha's were extremely watered down and barely tasted like their respective fruits. Not worth trying. read more

I typically avoid leaving negative reviews because I don't want to harm a business, but I felt it might be helpful for this location to receive feedback from my experience. I ordered a matcha latte, but unfortunately, the matcha tasted very chalky and was not enjoyable. I politely asked if I could receive a refund, and the employee assisting me made a genuine effort to help, though she was unable to process it on the register. She then asked her manager for assistance. Unfortunately, my interaction with the manager or colleague was disappointing. He came across as dismissive and told me that a refund could not be issued unless something was "wrong" with the drink. I showed him that I had only taken one sip and explained that the taste was unpleasant, but I did not feel that my concerns were taken seriously. The interaction left me feeling uncomfortable and unheard. I believe there is an opportunity for improvement in customer service at this location so that future customers feel better supported and leave with a more positive experience. read more

Tried the strawberry matcha and mochi! The matcha is strong and it's pretty yummy! I liked the matcha cream mochi more than the strawberry cream. If you actually are a real matcha drinker I would ignore the bad reviews and come here! The matcha flavor is there and so is the banana cream it's not too sweet and you taste the matcha. read more

My first time trying this place. It was a Saturday evening, and this place had a huge line. The person that took our order was polite and friendly. I was disappointed when I went to order the strawberry daifuku, which they ran out. I ordered the strawberry Mont Blanc parfait. It was delicious. I got the milk soft serve. I was surprised that it had mochi and jelly included. This dessert was perfect and not too sweet. read more

Apparently those were the older slices that they were trying to get rid of. They were clearly smaller and, judging by how they were being pushed, probably not the freshest either. Since I was basically being forced to buy something I didn't want, I said I didn't want anything. She just said "okay" and moved on to help the rest of my family. At that point I told my family we were leaving and heading to Bloomfield Creamery in Altadena instead. The employee had every opportunity to use a little common sense and simply give me the slice I asked for. I work hard for my money, and if I'm paying premium prices, I expect to choose what I'm buying. Instead, they lost Madre family of customers for good.
